- belial, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Why is it hard to believe? Is it threatening your world view?
- Machine, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2It's USA Today folks. As long as the space is filled, the words don't need to make much sense.
- johnhummel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I have to agree: poorly researched.
A better article would have pointed out:
1. The transition from PPC to Intel might not go as well as planned, especially if the PPC emulator (I can't remember the name) isn't fast enough. If the major vendor support in the form of Adobe and Microsoft don't offer patches, there might not be enough of an incentive for people to go Intel until they do.
2. Even if the shift goes well, what about the possibility that people will start using a Wine for OS X, and developers decide to stop spending their time making Apple applications and just make Windows ones? Granted, this is an idea that I don't agree with, but the author could have raised it as a possibility for why Apple sales may be high initially, but have a "reverse halo" effect.
3. Microsoft's Xbox might make enough enrodes, and if MS gets smart and tries to make an iTunes like music/video store that works with the Xbox and some other MP3 partners, the iPod could lose some of its market share. (Granted, this provides that MS can get enough Xboxen into the stores for as many people to buy them as there are iPod users, but I'm just brainstorming here.)
Otherwise, there's not much that says that Apple will have a bad year. Even if computer sales fall through the basement, the iPod will prop them up for at least a year or so. Most of the buzz is that the Intel machines are fast enough to overcome PPC emulator issues, and Apple's made porting (at least if you use Xcode) easy enough.
I'd actually predict that while 2006 may be dangerous, Apple's got enough cash and products to whether the transition to Intel, and I predict they'll do better for it. If they continue to diversify and become something like a Sony (start with the iPod/Walkman, move into home entertainment) only with a controlled distribution channel, they could stand to become even larger.
Personally, I'm excited to try Intel based OS X just for the Wine possibility - I can run my favorite OS X apps like iMovie, keep running my Microsoft Office, keep the power of Unix which I use for development and security work - and, if Wine works, finally be able to fire up Half Life 2 or other PC games I've missed out on (like Silent Storm).
So, the author had a good chance to raise real issue, but I think he either didn't have a good enough imagination, or got sidetracked (like RSS? I mean, WTF does that have to do with Apple?).
Of course, that's just my opinion. I could be wrong. - randylovin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1No digg.
- iSEPIC, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Everyone falls eventually... I can guess the comments would be the opposite if it said "Bill Gates" - given the popularity of Apple and Linux lovers on here. (and I'm not saying if I am one of them or not :-) )
- firehydra2k, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This is an editorial. Who cares.
- TheFlyingMonkey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0i see what hes saying about the popularity wagon, but the products will still sell.
- el_jefe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Who Cares
- silentauthority, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0poorly written. i refuse to linger on it any longer.
- e3mw, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This article is just foolish. He states no evidence, just his gut feelings. Who gives a crap? Shut your hole you USA today grunt.
- BlueStarr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0edit- garner
- Bytor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0No diggs on this. These is just another random idiot (a la Dvorak) blathering something he hopes will be controversial enough to generate some buzz. Don't give him the hits.
- superal1394, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0bah. He fell of awhile ago, but caught back up and jumped on again.
- avocade, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Hope he won't break a leg. No pun intended.
- aronoff, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0USA today is quite possibly the worst newspaper on the planet.
- elpipetuanis, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I am not an apple fanboy but holy crap what is this guy thinking. With the Intel Macs and the utter domination over windows OS X will have in the coming years, i just don't see Jobs leaving the pedestal any time soon.
- wilf_brim, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The fact that so many people around here drop their pants and bend over whenever Jobs introduces anything at all leads me to believe that Apple has TONS of goodwill no matter what they do, I don't see Jobs crashing anytime soon.
- willywalloo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0THIS MAN ; is simply using that statement to draw attention to himself. It would be the equivalent of me Stating that the President is going to fall in 2006, then precede to talk about 'biker mice from mars.'
AGREED: [IDIOT] - but he's got smarts in that brain of his, just used in a malicious way. - Meowmix, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0@ firehydra2k: Agreed.
This is lame. >_< No digg - Brewno, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Belial: He makes no point. He has no arguement, no proof... the article seems to have no meaning.
He's saying Steve Jobs will "fall" because... well, because the author of the article says so.
What does a paragraph about RSS have anything to do with Steve Jobs "fall"?
What a poorly written article :/ - Singee15, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I love Hootie and the Blowfish!
- Raian, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I think this author should bet his job on his prediction.
- videolab, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0He cant be on the top of the world forever. Believe me I am an apple stock holder and wish to see nothing else but more greatness from apple in the coming year. But 2006 with the Intel transition and the iPod the way it is the only thing that could really kill them is if the music companies pulled their content from itunes.
- TidusX, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This article is proof as to why I don't read USA today much, any more. No valid backing, no critical thinking.
- Web_Weasel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Why are you reading USA Today for tech news? For that matter, any news?
- chingas, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This is actually a step up for Apple. Until a few years ago, most of these guys would predict Apple would not last another year-and I've been hearing that since '89!
- bonlebon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0no brainer here, ipods will stop selling, maybe not in 2006, profits will fall and another Judas within Apple will crucify Jobs... again.
- jk_baller23, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Did this guy just wake up? Steve Jobs may be even bigger this year with the release of the mactels. But then again, things might go sour too, but he will definitely not be falling anywhere anytime soon.
- abhibeckert, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I stopped reading when I got to the RSS bit... He's quoting a really good speech and making it sound like apple is bad because it isn't doing RSS or something?
Never mind that every page on apple.com that needs rss has it, and safari has enough basic rss support for the average user (Apple's not trying to compete with third party rss apps). - andy78, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'm sure there will come a time when Steve will indeed fall from public favor. But that will never happen as long as all of the other OS's suck so bad compared to OSX. I believe that in 2005 the world realized that Macs are superior computers (because of osx) , and until someone proves them wrong or provides a better alternative, the Apple/ Steve Jobs love will not falter... By the way, I can almost guarantee that the guy who wrote this story will have to go out and buy a few Ipod nanos for his wife and kids...
- caseysousa, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0this was an absolutely terrible article. what did it say that we didn't already know? no digg.
- fohat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+095% of this article has nothing to do with Apple or Steve Jobs. Kevin Maney, You are fired.
- Jathan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Apple computer is loaded with talented people, and they will continue to innovate. It's only just begun......
- felchdonkey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0His second "prediction":
Cell phone cameras will get better.
Wow, so he reads Gizmodo? Or maybe he's aware that the tech from Korea and Japan will trickle down here by then? None of that - he had to be told that by someone else, who makes imaging chips for phones.
Ok, here's my "prediction" - computers will be faster, hard drives will offer more space for less money, and some electronics may get smaller. I know, going out on a limb... - delta013, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0True the guy has no point, but what's sad is that if this article was about Bill Gates, you would all be cheering and clapping. You wouldn't care that he had no point. I find that far worse then this article.
- zyhlo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0the writer just doesn't know the easy way of life if he doesn't support apple . why put down someone who makes life so much easier . If apple licenses its OS out to other computer vendors , they will definitely soon be bigger than Microsoft . bill gates still earns at the end because of his share in apple but i think Steve jobs learned that money isn't important as his company is proving to be better than Microsoft . bill gates may earn all the money in the world but he will die with none of it & he will have nothing to take to his grave . If Steve dies , I'm sure there will be millions of supporters crying like mad
Steve jobs walks into a cell phone store & walks back out with nothing . his comments is that all the features for nothing & too difficult to use . You have to admire his way of thinking in making his OS so easy to use .
look at the ipod video with that amazing video codec , the amazing LCD screen . you have to appreciate things like that . Apple makes your life more simpler . Apple has everything you need & they are short of nothing .
Steven Jobs " The Internet will be the next big thing & change of lives "
Bill Gates " The Internet will slowly fade away "
These comments were made about 10 or more years back & look where the Internet has taken us .
1 more thing - apple will definitely bring out the creative side in you & make your life more interesting . - HoGiHung, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0...and if he falls, he will stand back up and be stronger. He has already exhibited how strong of a person he is. He fell mighty hard and came back. I'd even go out and say he saved Apple with his return.
Good luck to him, and Apple. I look forward to more exciting products from them and to the day I bury my last Windows based PC. (2 Macs vs. 3 Windows).
Ho.... - mmartin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Digg--- I love macs, but I'd write the article if I knew I would get these kind of responses.. What fun! =D
- Deuterium, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0As the responses to this piece clearly shows, there are enough clueless, elitist, lemmings to keep Job$ producing more of his cute toys for years to come. The rest of the world will shake their heads and ignore them as they have done for the last 25 years.
- flickr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This article is so bad.
- il0vemymac, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0You've got to be freaking kidding me... and this article was published? Was this guy on drugs? Sounds more like jealousy on someone's part than an article. Probably paid by Mr. Gates up in Readmond to write this one...
- billmarrs, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I can't wait... hate him!
- jmccorm, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0DEWEY DEFEATS TRUMAN!!!!
- chrisdoan, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0What the hell is this guy saying? He has nothing to base this on, except for the fact that he's a complete dumbass. No digg, this guy is a *****.
- MattHoult, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Well, the guy has studied well; another idiot making money from nowhere, getting famous from nowhere... Takes after his president no doubt.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Jobs' mishandling of the IBM relationship and IBM's subsequent dumping of Apple as a customer have put Jobs in a very precarious position.
The true impact of the Apple/Intel fiasco won't be felt for about another six months. - groverallnight, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0But Jobs is Jesus and Apple is God!
- manfesto, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0um, what?
Did this guy actually get paid to write this "article?" - Elxx, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0Funny stuff, all the Apple fanboys quickly going "NO! OUR GOD WILL LIVE! ALL HAIL JOBS!"
- BlueStarr, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0What a freaking imbecile. Someone please tell me that this fool doesn't collect a check for writing this drivel. Of course he knew that this title(troll bait) would gardner huge page hits but when you try and read that actual story, there isn't any! Belial, you don't find this ***** retarded? Where is the proof? The contention! Any ***** thing! Idiots!
