Steve Jobs Offers Early Lisa Adopters Store Credit
bbspot.com — Early adopters of the iPhone weren't the only ones receiving in-store credit from Steve Jobs. In an overlooked announcement, Jobs said that early adopters of the Apple Lisa would be receiving a $7000 in-store credit.

- Nossie, on 10/10/2007, -9/+4thats the reason why I thought the article might have a *tiny* bit of credibility ...
Other companies go for this scam all the time..
if you find this product cheaper anywhere else then we'll return it and give you double the difference...
OR
the whole If you are not completely satisfied with your product then return it and get your money back guaranteed!!
Its based off the fact if you buy a product and are not happy with it... how many people would consider taking it back rather than just binning it?
On the outside it looks like the company is looking after your interests while the reality of it is that they know 95% of their customers are too lazy to take advantage of it even if they could.
Even if this announcement was real.... ANYBODY that still has the box AND the receipt since the computer came out should get a bloody medal for hoarding nevermind a partial refund.
I truely believe Apple could get away with this and look great.... the 5 people that still have the required materials would get a whopping credit, and the x million people that didnt care/buy a Lisa or weren't born would consider Apple much higher on their 'friendly corporations' list.- Nossie, on 10/10/2007, -2/+1oooooh I'm being buried by the fan boys :P

- kdepa, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5Sadly, I have a relative who has done just that... He has a Macintosh SE, and has the receipt, box, and anything and everything relating to what he bought with it back in the 80s. He even had it set up "just in case" until he finally ran out of desk space last year.
- Bodhinature, on 10/10/2007, -8/+1They said Apple could be liable for up to 70,000 dollars in refunds. That means only 10 people bought an Apple Lisa!!!!

I think the joke is on the people that dug down dignon's comment: They probably dug him down because they _thought_ he didn't 'get it'.

Can we sort them out? - 6502programmer, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6I figured it was satire, based on the title, but wasn't sure. Quite honestly, that people didn't realize they were getting the shaft for being early adopters is surprising. From the $599 release price to the later revealed $280 estimated component cost, you would think that people realized there was massive markup. To get upset about something coming down in price after initial launch hype died down is something I'm unable to understand.
- bromac, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6They realized.
They just wanted to bitch and get free stuff anyways. People are petty and selfish.
- bromac, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6They realized.
- Firehed, on 10/10/2007, -3/+2I'd considered the possibility that Apple might actually pull a stunt like that as some sort of bizarre joke. Had they not ended the article with the stock was down on the announcement comment (it's up today, last I checked), I might have thought this had a shred of credibility.
- streak, on 10/10/2007, -4/+1In June, rumors abounded that buying the iPhone was soon going to be seen as a bad deal. Why all the surprise now? Get over it already. It's a great device.

- DivineLackey, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3An inevitable comment. Like calling every site a digg clone. I wonder why the election system isn't called a digg clone. It features voting and its a popularity contest. Digg owns voting or any similar system, and the onion owns sarcasm and satire. for those of you who want that lol. Who thinks digg needs a thumbs up, a thumbs down, and a sarcasm button to help people?

- xaxxon, on 10/10/2007, -3/+48do you even know what stock options are?
Perhaps you meant "stock"..- pauleric, on 10/10/2007, -2/+19Chicagospur seems to have a better idea what they mean than you do. I would definitely like to have the option to buy a bunch of Apple stock with $7000 at a stock price which was set 20 years ago.
- bravo1995, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6The question is, do you know what stock options are?
How much would that $7000 be worth if I exercised those options today?- harksaw, on 10/10/2007, -2/+3Stock options expire in less than 20 years.
- etjazz, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Apple traded between US5-9 in 1987, so best case scenario $7000 would have gotten you 1400 stocks in 1987 which today would be worth USD 192'000. However, I do believe there has been a couple of stock splits in the company's (1:2) history, so the actual amount should be even larger.
If you owned the stocks (not options), you would also had received some dividends a couple of times.
- xaxxon, on 10/10/2007, -3/+48do you even know what stock options are?
- roomforpanic, on 10/10/2007, -13/+7Instead of buying a Lisa, I'd like to have sunk 9K into Apple stock back then.

Now if Microsoft would just give a refund to all those people buying new machines that are saddled with Visturd, making them hideously slow when XP (or better yet Linux) works just fine. Of course, that's about as likely as a $7000 for a Lisa.- cbreaker, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4All you needed was the $ in Microsoft, and you could have gotten some major diggs, Mr. Anti-M$ D00d.

- iticu, on 10/10/2007, -6/+1Not really.
It's pretty simple. - iticu, on 10/10/2007, -6/+0Double post..
Digg down ^^ - xaxxon, on 10/10/2007, -2/+9while you're at it, explaining the joke and all, can you actually do the math for me and tell me that that means there were only 10 people who bought a Lisa?
- palehorse864, on 10/10/2007, -3/+2You get dugg up for correct math.
- bjs3171, on 10/10/2007, -5/+1that's why it would be a, uh, joke. get it? "ha ha, only 10 people bought that product."

- adrianmonk, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1Yes, I think xaxxon recognized it was a joke. It was obvious, and he was complaining about someone pointing out the obvious. Of course I could be wrong that xaxxon knew it was a joke, but if so I'm not sure why he used the phrase "explaining the joke".
- iticu, on 10/10/2007, -6/+1Not really.
- Funnyman22, on 10/10/2007, -6/+2LOL love it
- b04155, on 10/10/2007, -3/+3If this were true I'd bet someone would try to get more money from the interest that $7000 would accrue over the years.
- Firehed, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Holy hell, just did the math at that. You're talking almost fifteen grand in interest at 5% APY.
If only I were alive in 1983, had $10k at the time, and this were a real offer... oh well.

- anonym41414, on 10/10/2007, -2/+4By all means, let's limit Digg to stories about how the US is a dictatorship and fringe political candidate X is our only hope. Oh, and also the Council on Foreign Relations pulled off 9/11.
- Rustbelt, on 10/10/2007, -2/+1Man, what is it with people an these 9/11 conspiracies?
- zoom1928, on 10/10/2007, -2/+1Exactly! Fake news has no place here. It sucks that someone's bold-face lie makes the front-page. There is no store credit despite what some dishonest people claim.
- gareth805, on 10/10/2007, -5/+2Wot, no sense of humour. Let me guess you were on of those idiots standing in line for hours on end to get fleeced on an iphone...
- lucidapathy, on 10/10/2007, -16/+4Seriously... their satire writer needs some help. That was horribly written, and not really funny.
- macmonger, on 10/10/2007, -7/+1Love it... iPhone owners, show some restraint.
Did you run out and buy the first handheld cell phone too for $3,995.
http://www.retrobrick.com/moto8000.html - iNoles, on 10/10/2007, -12/+2LOL, who still uses Apple Lisa machines these days?
- sacherjj, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2According to the article: < = 10
- aywwts4, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1If you go to this website, You just used a lisa

- exomni, on 10/10/2007, -10/+3"Sales figures from that year show that if all people who bought the computer claim the refund, Apple could be liable for almost $70,000."
lol - bjs3171, on 10/10/2007, -7/+32*****. at first i was like "ok very funny." then i looked and saw it wasn't the onion, so i was like "damn, i guess it's real." then i was like "damn, i'm an idiot."
- adrianmonk, on 10/10/2007, -2/+7I saw this pamphlet called "A Modest Proposal" written by some guy named Jonathan Swift, and since it wasn't in The Onion, I think it is real. Is that true? Is it real?
- OAKsider, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Damn, like, *****. "STFU." Then I was like cool.
- cdcdcd, on 10/10/2007, -3/+11ALMOST $70,000! That is great!
- Firehed, on 10/10/2007, -4/+1LOL!
- rmw132, on 10/10/2007, -10/+6iWhine 2007
- pepsiaddict, on 10/10/2007, -5/+13Time to start digging through the old Apple boxes in the basement... I guess it's good that I laminated my receipt. Who's laughing now?
P.S: BBSpot = great. - gruvsf, on 10/10/2007, -4/+3omg this was a great laugh in the morning!
- MLBudToo, on 10/10/2007, -2/+7Lisa: Look at the "wonders" of the computer age now.
Homer: Wonders Lisa? Or blunders?- bravo1995, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Implied, Lisa, or implode?
- Blacula, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0Mom, make him stop!
- bravo1995, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Implied, Lisa, or implode?
- BradMW, on 10/10/2007, -5/+8Incoming Digg needs a Satire section comment.
- sacherjj, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Then how would we weed out the morons?
- OAKsider, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Digg totally needs less people saying what Digg needs.
And a Picture section.- sacherjj, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Picture section or Digg didn't happen?
- cwcentral, on 10/10/2007, -14/+2in store credit!? why not just give me the money back period for buying a crappy lisa product.
Now my choices are more apple proprietary hardware--guess what? I'll need to spend about 1K in software to be back where's I'm at with a Lisa. Smooth move Jobs.- zongamin, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1go back to sleep
- insomniac8400, on 10/10/2007, -14/+2I guess it is pathetic Apple is still up to the same tricks and customers still stay loyal.
- frostieDude, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Yeah those idiots are sure idiots if they keep buying products they like from a company that keeps making cool stuff.
- lummox, on 10/10/2007, -7/+3Well, crap!! I've got the receipt, just not the box. Oh well...
- chandrab, on 10/10/2007, -9/+3No thanks Jobs....The Apple Lisa-1 in my basement is worth $15K as a collectors item. There are only about 20-30 left in the world.
- Rileyper, on 10/10/2007, -10/+4You get to keep it, there giving the store credit to you.
- Lumiras, on 10/10/2007, -5/+3I'll be honest, I thought this was an honest article up until I got about 2 paragraphs in
Good work, BBspot - cplater, on 10/10/2007, -4/+3Very Funny.
- HappyScrappy, on 10/10/2007, -11/+2Anyone who makes light of the iPhone price cut thing (as this does) likely doesn't understand what the base issue even is.
If your customers get angry it indicates they may have learned the lesson "don't buy anything until it has been out 3 months", which is a lesson you DON'T want them to learn.
The Lisa, having been out long enough that people got their value out of it (if that was even possible with the Lisa) isn't the same.- briggsb, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Um, I wrote the article and I understand the base issue. Just an FYI.
People who bought the Lisa in October probably didn't feel they got their value out of their $10k purchase when the Mac came out three months later at $7500 less.- frostieDude, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2You DO realize that the Lisa had a 10 MB hard drive built in and that the Mac did not. A 10 MB hard drive in 1983 cost like $9,000 just by itself.
I knew people who had lisas and also Macs (back in 83-85). They weren't complaining about "wasting money" on the price differential between the two.- briggsb, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2I think anyone who spent $10k on a Lisa and $3k on a Mac in 1983 probably wouldn't be complaining. That's about $27k in today's dollars. There's two reasons they wouldn't be complaining. I'll leave it as an exercise for the reader to figure them out.
- HappyScrappy, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2My grandfather didn't seem to mind that the Lisa he bought was outmoded. And it was a lot longer than 3 months between releases, the Mac came out a year later than the Lisa with a smaller screen, 1/8th the RAM and half the floppy drives (faster processor though!). At going rates, the RAM in the Lisa alone was worth well over $1K of the difference between the two!
- frostieDude, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2You DO realize that the Lisa had a 10 MB hard drive built in and that the Mac did not. A 10 MB hard drive in 1983 cost like $9,000 just by itself.
- Billions, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3I'm really, really glad you explained that, HappyScrappy. Really.
*fart noise*
- briggsb, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Um, I wrote the article and I understand the base issue. Just an FYI.
- Chordonblue, on 10/10/2007, -2/+11Ha! They should refund the money from everyone that bought an Apple III...
