- lgc90, on 10/11/2007, -4/+38Apple TV firmware update for YouTube playback is comming!
- colincornaby, on 10/11/2007, -5/+32"Q: Apple DRM is AAC -- transcoding, ripping, burning, etc. -- why not make Apple's DRM-free music MP3? [Applause]"
Is this guy an idiot? AAC is a common file format, Apple simply wraps their DRM around it. Apple applies no DRM when transcoding, ripping, or burning. And AAC is the basis for MP4 audio. Apple could supply songs in MP3, but why? AAC is the successor to MP3, not some Apple-fied audio format. - darkphan, on 10/11/2007, -3/+21I think one of the best parts of this Q&A was:
Mossberg: So the question: how many copies of iTunes are out there?
Jobs: Several times as many copies of iTunes out there. 300m or more.
Mossberg: Almost all are on Windows computers?
Jobs: Statistically yes.
Mossberg: Statistically? In reality? In this dimension? So that makes you an enormous Windows software developer.
Jobs: It's like giving a glass of ice water to somebody in hell! - Ninjab3ar, on 10/11/2007, -5/+23Yeah, thats nice, but I guess that means that the only thing on the AppleTV thats plays in 720p is the menu....
- bemmu, on 10/11/2007, -0/+16No video stream? And this is supposed to be "all things digital"?
- Antialias, on 10/11/2007, -3/+19wageslaven,
DRM is "digital rights management". What right are you being denied by having your name embedded in the song file. There is no legal activity that you can not do with these files. - netburnr, on 10/11/2007, -1/+16iTunes works flawlessly on my PC, but hey, to each his own vulgrin
- MacParrot, on 10/11/2007, -4/+19Quack, get over yourself and your Apple hatred. I've got a nano because I've refused so far to buy an iPod with video. The one thing holding me back has been screen size. 2.5-inches just doesn't cut it. Actually 3.5-inches isn't that much better, but it's about as good as Apple will probably do to avoid competing with the iPhone's capabilities.
Radio? I bought a digital audio player to get AWAY from that mindless dribble
Wireless? If it's like the Zune's then no thanks. That's not a slam on the Zune as it seems to be a pretty decent player, but without Mac support I'm not interested. If it allowed for a wifi connect for new content from iTunes (load up podcasts or new tunes with a direct connection to my iTunes account) then yeah, I'd like it. - danielwsmithee, on 10/11/2007, -0/+13Along with a 160 GB Apple TV.
- Akram, on 10/11/2007, -8/+21By the way, apple just announced a 160gb model of the Apple Tv...check out the press release on Apple.com
- darkamster07, on 10/11/2007, -1/+13Regardless of what you think of him, Steve Jobs really knows how to handle himself in front of a crowd, there couldn't be a better person to sell a product.
- gsnedders, on 10/11/2007, -0/+12Not only that, but AAC was developed as part of the MPEG2 standard as the successor to MP3. _It's meant to succeed MP3._
- mannymix03, on 10/11/2007, -3/+14so WWDC list is now at
1.iPhone
2. Leopard info/beta
3. New desktop?
4. New iPods - ryjohn, on 10/11/2007, -1/+12I think what he meant by making the best iPods ever, refered to the iPhone.
"[flashes the iPhone, puts it back away] Best iPod we've ever made, best phone we've ever made!" - ravi7791, on 10/11/2007, -4/+15Looks like new iPods after iPhone and a new desktop at WWDC!
"If you come to WWDC we're rolling out our new version of OSX -- massive investments in desktop"
"We're working on the best iPods that we've ever worked on... and they're AWESOME." - MacParrot, on 10/11/2007, -2/+12Watermarking is NOT DRM. You can take that file and play it on any device that can use the AAC format (and there are plenty that will besides the iPod). If you aren't uploading it to a bit torrent site, why would you care?
- tmedesign, on 10/11/2007, -1/+11"it's like giving a glass of ice water to somebody in hell."
- colincornaby, on 10/11/2007, -4/+14Microsoft definitely is trying to steal Apple's thunder though. I don't know how successful they'll be. Microsoft Surface is being marketed to businesses, but Apple markets to end consumers. And if you look at the demos Microsoft is doing, some stuff like the device syncing is not being promised for the version coming late this year. They use words like "in the future", and "eventually" to describe it, which makes sense considering no one has built devices that will talk to the Microsoft Surface, and the devices have to somehow give the table their physical location so that the table can map a wireless signal to a place on the surface of the table.
In other words, the full Microsoft Surface that Microsoft demoed has got to be at least another year or two off. Apple will announce products before their release sometimes, but Microsoft was demoing stuff that is still a long way from being available to consumers. It completely looks like they want to detract from what Apple's doing. - KSUdesigner, on 10/11/2007, -2/+11"When Apple announces a cool new product/tech it's available that day or soon after."
Right, so when was the iPhone announced? Guess you consider a 7 month wait to be "soon." Oh and then there's Leopard... - Loyaleagle, on 10/11/2007, -2/+10Live quote:
"People want to buy a lot of video... wouldn't it be great if you could see YouTube on your Apple TV... it's available as a free software upgrade available in a few weeks. Normally I wouldn't announce it early, but hey, it's D."
Yes, Youtube on AppleTV, it's confirmed! - nhinsch, on 10/11/2007, -2/+10Actually, he's right =]
http://www.apple.com/pr/library/2007/05/30appletv.html - mmzplanet, on 10/11/2007, -2/+10Not a WWDC.... I can see a special event with a keynote a month or so later. WWDC not the place for iPod. It will probably be all Leopard and new Macs.
- nfxmedia, on 10/11/2007, -4/+12@wageslaven
You are not restricted to it's use. That's the main point here. Watermarking is just a nonintrusive way to keep the pirates from pirating. It doesn't affect you if you aren't putting your music on P2P. So no, it's not DRM. - Antialias, on 10/11/2007, -2/+9iPhone & iPods make no sense for WWDC. I'de say 80-90% chance you won't see those in the keynote beyond a brief mention.
- superkendall, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6Put two and two together. Why have a 160GB AppleTV, without a source of HD video to aquire? Right now the Apple TV HD is just a cache, a 160GB drive implies more is to come.
- colincornaby, on 10/11/2007, -3/+9"I don't want to make you look like a total idiot but you do realize that Bill Gates was on The Today Show this morning and actually used a working unit with the host? Including wifi camera."
You mean with his wifi camera and his working unit? Gee. I can't see how Microsoft could have rigged their own gear to work correctly with their own product.
Until I can put my RAZR on a Microsoft Surface, and have the Microsoft surface track the location of my RAZR and pull pictures from it (yes, it has unlocked OBEX), I'm not impressed by the Microsoft Surface. It doesn't make any sense that the table can figure out where on the table you've placed your wireless device. Not unless Microsoft is somehow altering the devices they are using. - wastern, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6He said they were taking advantage of the 3G network with the iPhone. Up until now they've been quoting it as 2.5G. Hopefully it will in fact be 3G
- sockpuppets, on 10/11/2007, -2/+8Their smoke signals are blowing in my window. I can't see my latte.

- Antialias, on 10/11/2007, -5/+10Microsoft shows cool technology before it's really ready. The origami was supposed to be the end all be all of mobile devices, now everyone has pretty much forgotten about it. In another 3-4 years we might all be using devices like that, but they hyped it too early. Same with "surface". It's cool technology, and in 5-10 years we probably all will have tables, refrigerators, etc that have video surfaces with interactive objects. The technology just isn't there yet for them to announce it as a "finished" product.
When Apple announces a cool new product/tech it's available that day or soon after. With Microsoft it's usually "look what our products might do 2-3 years from now." - kris33, on 10/11/2007, -1/+6Read it again:
"Q: All indications appear that the iPhone is closed, we'd love to develop apps...
This is an important tradeoff between security and openness. We want both. We're working through a way... we'll find a way to let 3rd parties write apps and still preserve security on the iPhone. But until we find that way we can't compromise the security of the phone.
I've used 3rd party apps... the more you add, the more your phone crashes. No one's perfect, and we'd sure like our phone not to crash once a day. If you can just be a little more patient with us I think everyone can get what they want."
He's completely right. Just look at Windows Mobile. Unstable as hell. He want to sort out stability issues before he opens it up, which he has promised to do. - colincornaby, on 10/11/2007, -3/+8"He's completely right. Just look at Windows Mobile. Unstable as hell. He want to sort out stability issues before he opens it up, which he has promised to do."
Look at OS X. OS X is stable, even with 3rd party apps. And the iPhone runs OS X. - superkendall, on 10/11/2007, -1/+6DRM includes Watermarking. It has to, otherwise you cannot know specifically who a file belongs to in order to Manage (the M in DRM) it properly.
Watermarking is not in any way a form of DRM. DRM is not tracking. DRM is about control, control over what you can do with media. Watermarking by itself places no limitations on what you can do with a file. Sharing a file too widely may have consequences, but watermarking does not stop you from doing so if you like. - Quix, on 10/11/2007, -1/+6If only they had named it MP4 (which they easily could have done), we wouldn't have to deal with all the AAC-related ignorance out there.
- meatmcguffin, on 10/11/2007, -1/+6"But I am very much honored that I'm so loved by the Apple community that you've created a poorly produced parody to bounce insults off of"
God, even when a single person makes a parody of you, you still blame the Apple community!
Well done, you've validated his existence. - totorototoro, on 10/11/2007, -6/+10...i now regret my hasty digging down of akram :(
- fkr3, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4Removing DRM doesn't in any way remove their ownership, licensing or copyright law. It just removes a mechanism to protect it.
- superkendall, on 10/11/2007, -1/+5He said they were taking advantage of faster networks - I'm not sure if he said 3G even if the transcript did. And as he said, WiFi is much faster than 3G...
3G is not yet widespread, EDGE is a good choice for coverage and WiFi is a good choice when you want speed.
I would have liked to see Mossberg ask if you could do YouTube on the iPhone in the browser. - Quix, on 10/11/2007, -1/+5"Now that EMI allows songs sold without DRM, will Microsoft allow us all to share music on the Zune without protections?" - superkendall
Not a chance. Just because EMI is allowing the sale of non-DRM'ed music doesn't mean they want to encourage you to freely share it with the world. You can bet sharing protection schemes, as currently on the Zune, will remain a given. - BozoTClown, on 10/11/2007, -7/+11@ravi7791: "We're working on the best iPods that we've ever worked on... and they're AWESOME."
Well, duh! What the hell did you expect him to say? "We're working on the worst iPods that we've ever worked on... and they're MEDIOCRE." ???? - totorototoro, on 10/11/2007, -4/+83rd party apps for iPhone? "we'll find a way to let 3rd parties write apps and still preserve security on the iPhone". Nice.
- nutcase, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4wake up people, I don't care if I install a 3rd party app and my phone crashes, that's my choice, my phone, my problem. I just don't like Steve holding me back on a phone that will cost 500-600 bucks, let me do with it what I want.
open that ***** up, remember OSX is just FreeBSD, and that aint that far from Linux, so let people make stuff for it.
He is just worried that people will game the network to their advantage. - wastern, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4well, if it is full Safari as was said and Safari comes with flash already installed....at least with Mac computers I would think it wouldn't be a problem. Flash is pretty heavily used now to not support it in something you are saying is the first device with "full internet"
- teamfun, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3is there no link to the video of this anywhere?
- Elranzer, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3^ But then the general public would think MP4 was some sort of "sequel format" and would start to await MP5s "any day now"...
- kris33, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3The quote from Gizmondo looks even more promising:
"This is a very important tradeoff between security and openness. We want both. We've got good ideas, and sometime later this year, we can open it up to 3rd party apps, and keep security."
WOHOOOOOOOO - nsjoker, on 10/11/2007, -5/+8@ Palm Foleo. Damn you tabbed browsing.
- Elranzer, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4I thought you were talking about the Mighty Mouse and its clitoresque scrolling ball...
