- wontstoptalking, on 07/26/2008, -8/+127“This is Steve Jobs. You think I’m an arrogant [expletive] who thinks he’s above the law, and I think you’re a slime bucket who gets most of his facts wrong.”
Dude, my dream of being called on the phone by Steve Jobs just flew away. - billjimbob, on 07/26/2008, -9/+86This is hilarious. The gizmodo "writer" coming here and flaming people (in replies) for disagreeing with his article. Oh, Gizmodo.
- inactive, on 07/26/2008, -12/+61Bravo for this article. Privacy is a right for everyone, from presidents to homeless people.
- billjimbob, on 07/26/2008, -41/+86I know it must hurt Gizmodo to think of their God as being mortal, but this is a terrible article. Comparing Steve Jobs to JFK and FDR? GTFO.
Look at what happened to Apple's stock last time Steve Jobs kept his health a secret, and then it turned out he had cancer:
http://apple20.blogs.fortune.cnn.com/2008/07/23/st ... (check stock graph half-way down the page)
Their stock dropped 10%, for no other reason other than the fact that people were unsure of his health. It got bumped up a bit the next day, but still finished down for the week. Sure, he has the "right" to keep his health private, but you better believe investors are interested in it, and rightfully so. - krkeegan, on 07/26/2008, -5/+35I agree the term "writer" should be used loosely here.
- yokozuka, on 07/26/2008, -28/+58Read the fraking article.
I'm not comparing him to FDR and JFK. I'm saying that if FDR and JFK—men of greater power and responsibility in very difficult times—DIDN'T DISCLOSE (and actually lied about) their medical info, WHY THE FRAK Steve Jobs—who is just a mere mortal president of a tech company that doesn't amount to a hill of beans in the great scheme things—has to disclose his medical info?
The answer is: he shouldn't.
It's our right not to do so. And it's recognized by the United Nations and in most civilized countries across the world. Not only that, but it's fiercely protected.
So screw the investors and Wall Street. - inactive, on 07/27/2008, -6/+33Good for Mr. Jobs.
Dugg for "it's not your business anyway."
More people need to tell the media where to get off. It's a refreshing change. - mikesown, on 07/27/2008, -5/+27I respect Steve a lot for having the balls to say what he did to the reporter. It sounds arrogant on the surface, but how would you feel if someone was saying "I think he has cancer. He's going to die and I'll lose all my money" about you? It would suck having to deal with that. Steve is trying his best to get all the people speculating about him off his back. It's not our right to gossip behind his back about his health problems. It's one thing to gossip about Apple products, but it crosses the line when you're gossiping about a Steve's personal life.
- javaroast, on 07/27/2008, -4/+24I read your responses and the only one who was out of line in the comment section was you! To top it off your come here and post your comment above and prove that you are completely out of line. You owe all the posters and apology for your bannings, for calling them retarded and for claiming that anyone who questioned your article had reading comprehension issues. Grow up, learn to take some criticism, or quit writing.
- ShellShock11, on 07/27/2008, -10/+30I've talked with people who've met him. Apparently he is a jerk, and it's truly his way or the highway. He has a horrible temper and marches around Apple barking at people to make sure things get done exactly as he wants them done.
No one's complaining though, as he's done a hell of a job bringing apple back from the graveyard (or at least the company has done really well under him, regardless of how much you think he has contributed). - inactive, on 07/27/2008, -5/+24Giz has always been a second-rate tech blog. I've never really felt compelled to read their stuff and wish Erica Sadun would leave TUAW and join them already so I can have all the ***** in one place ;)
- Typhoon2009, on 07/27/2008, -5/+23I really hate investors. Aren't speculators part of the reason oil's been so god damn expensive. And this too. "Steve? Do you have cancer?" "No, why?" "Eh, I don't wanna lose my money." *****...
- krkeegan, on 07/26/2008, -6/+23Jesus, since you apparently willing to have a conversation about it here, but you will not allow me to converse with you on your own site, here is what I said:
Post 1 ---------------
- Jobs needs to list 1 person who will take over, not 3
- It it not uncommon to have a succession plan in place
- Investor's have a right to know that there investment will be safe
- Steve has already taken serious risks with his health in the past
I then complained like many others over the use of analogy of FDR to Steve Jobs. Attacking the foundation of an analogy is not an uncommon way to disagree with a premise.
Finally, I said that your constant swooning over Apple prevents you from presenting the facts objectively.
---------------
Apparently this post was acceptable as I was not banned for it.
Post 2 --------------------
You ban those who disagree with you?!?!
Not only is that childish, but it goes against your privacy rights, U.N. spouting rant. You expect a right to privacy but you deny others a forum to disagree. Doesn't sound very democratic to me.
I am sadly surprised by you Gizmodo. When did you become such an intolerant environment?
------------------------
For this I was banned. I think my statement is valid. Why are you banning people who disagree with you?? Disagreement is what gives your site value. Why have comments that just mimic what you have said?
So yeah I am upset, maybe I shouldn't have called you childish, but I don't think my comments were "retarded" or "offensive". On the other hand, you attacking my intelligence by saying I have poor reading comprehension seems uncalled for.
Jesus, I have tried to explain my self to you in a civilized manner. Can you return the courtesy to me as well? - dragon76, on 07/27/2008, -2/+19Let's talk after you have cancer, go into remission and people are saying you look like you have cancer, *****. I've had cancer, gone into remission and the last thing you want is people constantly saying, "Are you sure you don't still have cancer?"
- rkettner, on 07/27/2008, -2/+18No it isn't. While I understand Shareholders may want this information... they have the CHOICE to be invested in a business that rests so heavily on a single individuals "brand". They can sell if they are truly worried... it doesn't remove his right to privacy.
- cheezintern, on 07/27/2008, -14/+30I have more respect for the guy, even though I still wouldn't touch a mac with a 10 foot pole.
- AWBoy666, on 07/27/2008, -7/+22Yokozuka-
Seriously......grow up. Responding like this to criticism is childish and pathetic. I read your blog religiously but won't after seeing your comment here. Grow some balls and take some criticism lying down. - cmical, on 07/26/2008, -7/+21yokozuka, I agree and disagree with you.
As an Apple shareholder, I respectfully disagree with you. Steve Jobs is the reason I have watched my investment rise over 30%. Should he have issues and not be able to run the company any longer, not give creative input or able to get the next iGadget out, my investment could potentially suffer.
As a human being, I believe that personal health related items are just that - personal.
So, in fairness, I'm not going to digg you. - peestandingup, on 07/27/2008, -4/+18Hey, yokozuka. Why don't you post this stuff on your own site & see what your readers think about it instead of coming here to digg to do it, you dickless turd.
- inactive, on 07/27/2008, -5/+19Ok seriously, if you Gizmodo guys wanna have some big drama moment, go do it on your own ***** site's comments. Digg's comments are usually bad enough.
- krkeegan, on 07/26/2008, -29/+42Wow Gizmodo has started to show its true colors.
Just as a warning to everyone they are banning those who disagree with the article. I was banned for suggesting that Steve needs to explain what his succession plan is. I think it is a logical argument. If you don't want to tell us about the health problems that you are CLEARLY having, then just tell us who will take over if you can no longer head Apple. Seems simple enough.
But, apparently Gizmodo doesn't like people disagreeing with them, or pointing out that they swoon all over Apple. So I was banned.
No surprise that they constantly fall short of http://www.Engadget.com in readership.
I am still amazed how childish Mr. Diaz has become though. - Qumahlin, on 07/27/2008, -0/+13I don't understand why ShellShock is being dugg down, for telling the truth. Steve Jobs is a controlling *****, but thats what works for him and it shows. People will still kill to work at Apple knowing they will be working for an ***** because that ***** certainly knows his ***** when it comes to design and marketing.
- ajforgue, on 07/27/2008, -2/+14I think you watch too much BSG.
- Falldog, on 07/27/2008, -16/+28Waaaaah. He shouldn't get pissed off at people speculating at his health after not being upfront about it in the beginning.
When you live out in the public, creating a mythical persona of yourself, people are going to ask questions. If you don't like it, tough *****.
As for the FDR and the JFK 'relation' that was another time and day. Look at happened with the Clinton sex scandal and someone's sexual activities has as much a right to privacy as their health. - chillypacman, on 07/27/2008, -8/+19Unlike JFK and FDR, Steve Jobs is the leader of a religion, so it makes sense for him to be deemed immortal.
- siszam, on 07/27/2008, -1/+11Wait till some of your employers start demanding to see your medical records because your health affects the company. Or maybe a potential employer will have to approve of your health history before they hire you. Either people are entitled to privacy or they aren't. It doesn't matter if they own the company or sweep the parking lot. Your health is your business. Period. If stockholders can't deal with ups and downs without dealing with decent boundaries then they need to pull their money out of the market.
- kidko, on 07/27/2008, -0/+10Dunno if you guys read it, but WIRED 16.04 ran an article about Jobs and Mac. The notable things that it said were that he was, generally, a guy you don't want to piss off. But it's an attitude like that that makes people _want_ to please him (since complements are so rare at Apple), and they turn out much better products this way.
And ShellShock's just saying it like it is. If you don't like it, don't bury him, just don't read it. - javaroast, on 07/27/2008, -1/+10The FDR and JFK argument makes the article look completely ridiculous. These were leaders over 60 and 40 years ago respectively. In more recent times we had full disclosure of skin cancer (Reagan) and Polyps (Bush). We also get to hear about the results for every Presidential physical. You can definitely make the argument that it's Steve's decision, because ultimately it is, but when you add the whole United Nations argument and a rebuttal here with caps and it tends to make your position look less than rational. But then again I should know better than to expect well written article from Gizmodo.
- inactive, on 07/27/2008, -1/+10I'm sorry, but you failed at an adult conversation when you started a sentence with "u" rather than "you".
- inactive, on 07/27/2008, -2/+11"who is just a mere mortal president of a tech company"
As opposed the FDR and JFK who were IMMORTAL! - bizsumpark182, on 07/27/2008, -4/+13Personally I don't think Jobs needs to tell anyone about his health. Its none of our business whats going on in his personal life. Its personal for a reason. If you have something bad going on in your personal life you don't go out and tell every person around. Sure telling your wife, kids, etc would be a good thing to do. But, outside of those people I don't think it matters.
I also agree that if Steve does die, Apple will survive. Apple is more then just Steve. Its thousands of people. And I guarantee you that there are many things that are a part of Apple products that Steve himself didn't come up with. Sure, he may have had the final word on their implementation (then again maybe he gives someone else that power, who knows) but he does not come up with every idea that comes from Apple.
If you've noticed Bill Gates is no longer in charge of Microsoft and they are doing pretty well. Apple will not die, they will continue to grow, with Steve Jobs or without.
P.S. I'm sure I will get dugg down for this, but you know what, I don't care. We are just faceless people who think they have power because they can click a little symbol with our mice. - sdcarter, on 07/27/2008, -2/+10As an aside, it's really hard to take someone seriously when they say "frak." It's not as bad as using "netspeak" in normal conversation; but it's not far off.
As for your point about Jobs' disclosure, I think it's shiny. - bizsumpark182, on 07/27/2008, -0/+8If you read the article it doesn't say he had cancer. It was talking about how he had a major illness and kept it hidden and how things were still fine. How about you pay attention to what your reading.
- OpaqueMurdock, on 07/27/2008, -0/+8Friend, I hear you, but you have to be honest with yourself. Woz was the man behind the original Apple tech. Steve was always the man behind the business.
Also, Woz was not very involved in much tech after the first Apple personal computers... I don't believe he really had much to do with the mac or even the Lisa.
Woz is cooler and a better person to idolize in many ways, but he could not have done what Steve did. It was more than a "few lucky breaks" and it started way back when he first promoted Woz's design which otherwise would have likely had a total manufacturing run of one and sat on a shelf waiting for other smart but poor guys to visit so it could be dusted of and played around with. Imagine the conversation in that alternate "Jobs-less" reality... "Man Woz this was so cool back in the day! You could have made a fortune with it before AT&T installed Comp-u-kiosk on every street corner. Can you imagine a world where everyone had their OWN computer instead of leasing one from the phone company!?"
Every Woz in the world needs his Jobs. - bizsumpark182, on 07/27/2008, -1/+9If Steve Jobs dies the company is not going to do under. People are idiots for thinking that.
- jasmus, on 07/27/2008, -2/+9There has to be a line to draw though. Yes, report it if he's in danger of dying soon, but not if he's got a cold. If he has something that isn't life threatening, and is very treatable then I can't see an issue. Though if it is life threatening, then yes, tell us.

- UltraMegaFilms, on 07/27/2008, -0/+6Naw ***** that "takamalak." This isn't about politics. Don't change the subject.
- alk509, on 07/27/2008, -1/+7Wow, so in a single comment you managed to:
1. Suck Steve Jobs's dick;
2. turn a tech/gossip article thread into a statement against taxation; and
3. put down two of the most popular presidents in American history.
All that AND your username is "thecoolestguy."
Congratulations, sir, you've won the internet. - johnpaul191, on 07/27/2008, -1/+7Actually nothing happened to Clinton. He was impeached, but nothing came of it. He's as popular now as he ever was. The only people that cared were the Republicans and it's a safe bet that most of them just wanted to derail Congress from doing anything.
- sat0shi, on 07/27/2008, -0/+6I don't think anybody invests with the intention of losing money.

That is YOUR problem, not his, or our. Your risk on APPL stock would be lower if Steve Jobs was forced to disclose his health info, so you can sell everything as soon as you think he may be ill. I also think you could lower your risk by having a 24/7 video feed of what he does: if he is cheating on his wife, it may have an impact on his ability to print money for you, and you should sell.
Also, I am appealed that you could split the issue in tow halves: the "human side" and the "shareholder side", and then average your answer, as if those two "sides" were equally relevant. Is that the result of the "every issue has two sides mindset" that pervade in our society ? - darthchaosrspw, on 07/27/2008, -8/+12Freddie Mercury dodged the AIDS questions from the scum tabloid reporters until the day before he died when he told the press - through his publicist - that he did have AIDS. Maybe Jobs is "pulling a Freddie Mercury".
- johnpaul191, on 07/27/2008, -5/+9***** the stockholders. If you have no faith in Apple/Jobs, then sell the stock. You buy stock in a company because you have faith in them doing well. If you lose that faith, you get out. It's that simple, that's why the market is a risk.
Obviously Apple has a plan in case *something* happens to Jobs. One day he won't be running things, that's just a fact. Apple doesn't disclose every tactic and upcoming product release, why would they have to disclose physicals of top employees as well as their plans of succession. No other company does that.
I have a small amount of Apple stock and i have no worries. I would never consider asking for health profiles of the people running other companies i have stock in. That's insane. - ROFLance, on 07/27/2008, -1/+5
