- shiftt, on 10/12/2007, -7/+29that's probably true. With all people switching to Macs, and all the hot new products coming out soon (cell phone, iTV).....There's definitely potential for Apple to make 2007 their best year ever.
- Ireland, on 10/12/2007, -6/+21"Looking forward, 2007 is likely to be one of the most exciting new product years in Apple's history."
iPhone one agree with that! - orbanj, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12He also got himself out of an options backdating scandal.
- StarManta, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12"Interestingly enough, Mr. Dawkins himself uses a Mac..."
You don't have to believe in Intelligent Design to appreciate intelligent design. ;-) - wilhoitm, on 10/12/2007, -5/+16I bought my parents a Mac Mini for Christmans! :-)
- EGOvoruhk, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12What about the Pixar deal? Jobs became the largest shareholder in Disney stock at the beginning of the year. That seems like it should be on the list
- cplkai, on 10/12/2007, -4/+14"They always say it's going to be the best year ever, each year."
Well, as long as they keep progressing, I don't see a problem with that. - panique, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10I think he should be paid $2 this year then.
- Nar1117, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9In terms of the growth that Jobs has achieved for Apple Computer in the last 10 years? I think not. Microsoft may be a giant compared to Apple, but Gates can only wish he had as good a year as Jobs, relatively speaking of course.
- StarManta, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9I don't know what documentary or footage you're referring to, but there were a lot of points in time where Jobs would have been justifiably angry and bitter at the industry. When he started up, the industry was dominated by "Big Brother" IBM, and it's no secret Jobs wasn't fond of them. I'm sure getting kicked out of Apple made him a little pissy as well... I'm guessing what you saw was old footage of Jobs.
If you watch him now, his demeanor is somewhere between "god i love this industry" and "i'm glad no one in this industry is as smart as we are." More smug, proud, and passionate than hateful or angry.
(For better or for worse.) - spidoman, on 10/12/2007, -3/+11Well I just ordered a macbook, my first mac since my apple 2e. I look forward to learning os x again, and being able to dualboot as well. going to an intel chip I think was one of the smartest decisions they have made in recent history, right up there with the ipod and apple music store.
- Ireland, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10"They always say it's going to be the best year ever, each year."
Actually if I remember correctly, he not only didn't sat that last year, he said the transition to intel would take two years. - dimsum05, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7I'm actually very glad that Apple is getting the amount of attention it's been getting this year. If you just look of the amount of work and the amazing attention to detail they put into their products, its nothing short of amazing that that have not yet gotten the this amount of buzz. I hope the best for Steve and his crew in the upcoming year. You guy's deserve it!
(This coming from someone who has not owned a Mac... yet!) - countersoldat, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9No matter whether one doesn't like apple's products, it is pretty hard not to agree that Steve Jobs is a great CEO and has helped Apple innovate in a lot of different areas.
- manicdvln, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9Thank the employees of apple, not Steve Jobs.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8"Nah, I think Gates is still sitting happy. He's still got more money than Jobs has, it's just that Jobs has had a sudden increase because he's not making boring advertisements anymore."
He is sitting happy cause he has the money to buy all of the photocopiers in the world. The reason Bill Gates became the world richest man and not Jobs is because Jobs was to stubborn to let other PC's use his Operating system. The quote that comes to mind when trying to summarize this timeless story comes from Pirates of Silicon Valley where Jobs has found out Gates has been copying Apple
Steve Jobs: We're better than you are! We have better stuff.
Bill Gates: You don't get it, Steve. That doesn't matter! - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -5/+10Wow! Amazing! Golly gee!
Hey, how do you get to Cupertino? I'd like to go Congradfellate him. - cbreaker, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5I wouldn't say the Intel switch has been exactly seamless..
While PPC apps mostly run on Intel Macs without any special consideration, they do run quite slower. While fine for a Word Processor, it's not fine for much else. The thing that has helped the situation is that there's not all that many big apps for Mac, and these vendors have been good about creating universals. Not all of them free, not all of them forthcoming, though.
If you've got a lot of cash or don't mind pirating software, the Intel switch has been easier for you. - mabhatter, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Apple is surrounded by so much hype right now that Steve has to really careful that the media doesn't hype every little "brainstorm" idea he might mention. It's a tough position to be in as there's no place to go but DOWN for the slightest mistake.
- baxtermaddux, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Jobafarians?
the pope already covered that one
"Dont worship technology"
im sure that one went in and out the ears of everyone on Digg
*leans over and says a litle prayer to my shrine of used ipod parts* - quiksliver, on 10/12/2007, -4/+7Maybe I'm missing something, but besides the ipod success and a few intel macs being shipped out, there was really new or exciting, and the iphone rumor is just that and theres always the chance its a steaming pile of crap
like baxter said,
"the pope already covered that one
"Dont worship technology"" - donkeydrop, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Best year ever - if you ignore the massive stock option fraud.
- AssProphet, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Why not not Apple's best year ever? I'm sure Steve would recognize the work of Apple's designers, sales team, and users.
- SuperMoonMan, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4"I'm sure Steve would recognize the work of Apple's designers, sales team, and users."
Ha. If I had water in my mouth, I would have just spit it out. - Naga10, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Ireland, you've possibly made my day with that pun just after midnight.
dugg up for sure. - dave1021, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2It really cracks me up to see all this Apple-polishing on a day when the big business story is Apple execs (and if I'm not mistaken, Technomessiah Steve falls into this category) are about to be indicted for falsifying financial documents.
I think my father used to call it "whistling past the graveyard"... - mabhatter, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4when is the last time anybody CARED about Microsoft's core products? sure they have some things like Xbox out there, but it's still a money looser... people use Microsoft now because they MUST.. not because they want to. Steve can still afford to be cool... Bill is rich, but tied to boring corporate cash... Bill will never get the media coverage for being Cool and having new toys like Steve does... and that's what Bill really wants... that's why he's stuck around for so long hoping to score a speck of the celibriety that Steve has.
- StarManta, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4"he said the transition to intel would take two years."
Steve Jobs has multiple definitions for "the transition", as we learned during "the transition" to OS X. There was the point when all Apple computers shipped with OS X standard; the point when they stopped including Classic mode; the point when the OS9 installed base was small enough that they felt developers could safely ignore it. I'm probably forgetting other times when he said "the transition is complete."
For the two-year figure, he's probably referring to the last definition: when the userbase on PowerPC's is small enough that most developers will be able to ignore them. - SpacedCowboy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Um, I run Neverwinter nights on an intel Mac, and it works just fine! Games tend to be the most demanding apps, and this one is being translated on-the-fly and still running at a high FPS - I can't tell the difference between the iMac and the old G5...
Simon - SonofMaug, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1You are mistaken, Steve Jobs has yet to be indicted, and has, so far, been cleared. If he did anyhting illegal or improper, he should pay the price, it's that simple. If he hasn't then life goes on.
- StarManta, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3If we're thanking any employees, those employees would (mostly) be the ones Jobs hired or brought with him from NeXT.
- SonofMaug, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Hey, jrbrewin:
"yeah, i'd love to have a smug, dull, slave-driving, crook and liar running my company."
We've got one running the country, why not running a company? - theheadguy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I own a Mac so don't get me confused with a forum troll... But there are real facts to consider when we talk about how the year went from a financial perspective for Apple.
http://biz.yahoo.com/ap/061227/apple_stock_options.html?.v=5
Forged documents make everything look good, until you are caught. - runningIDIOT, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1but Steve got some problems with stock / taxes / stuff I don't understand too! And Apple can face a big problems because of that...
- nobogeys217, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I kind of like the "hell freezes over" comment about bootcamp. I still think dual-booting is pointless. Then again I don't play that many games on a PC. I'm more of a console gamer.
- Refrag, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Arjay, he was already kicked out of Apple. That was right before he started Next.
- Ireland, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3"Interestingly enough, Mr. Dawkins himself uses a Mac"
And here am I thinking he was a complete idiot. - Niten, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Interestingly enough, Mr. Dawkins himself uses a Mac...
(I recall seeing him in some video or another, working on a paper on his PowerBook.) - samuelcotterall, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It's probably very un-techy of me to say this, but I don't really follow Apple's sales from a financial standpoint, but I use and love Apple products.
I think they have finally gotten to a stage where their product line is damn near perfect - hardware (iPods included) that everyone else in the space wants to be comparable to, software that is giving the Adobe's and DigiDesign a run for their money, and that "X Factor" which is a combination of great products, "cool" and a no nonsense approach to business.
The last two years have been great for Apple, and I really hope that this success continues into 2007 and beyond. - tribality, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Here are some good Steve Jobs quotes...
http://quotiki.com/person.aspx?au=2668 - applesuxLeo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1If Apple had to get rid of Steve Jobs because of this, it would have material implications for the company,'' said Rob Enderle, an analyst with research firm Enderle Group in San Jose, California. ``A lot of executives had to leave their posts over this and the market is anticipating that kind of problem. That's where the concern is.''
Apple stock tanks today for falsified documents...and the rein of the ipod is slipping away. And no , the ipod isn`t providing a "halo effect" for Apple in other areas :) - GoogleGuru, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Apple for life. Its great that Apple is doing well.
- jrbrewin, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1yeah, i'd love to have a smug, dull, slave-driving, crook and liar running my company.
- kernokerno, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1@eatporktoo
go suck billy balls - cbreaker, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1That much seems obvious - he's a smart guy that is very good at motivating people to make good products. However, it puts fear in me about Apple - when Jobs was fired Apple computer pretty much went to the ***** after stagnant sales and flopped products, so what happens when he eventually leaves Apple? Will Apple fall by the way-side again?
When you buy Apple, you're locked in. Let's accept that fact right now. It's not different with Microsoft, but that's besides the point. The fact is, if Apple tanks, so does the future of what you've invested in. Your skill set, for one.
I for one will wait to see what happens. As much as I think MacOS is a very fine operating system and well beyond Windows in nearly all areas, it's still very proprietary and I'm not willing to switch from one lock-in to another. If only Apple would open source it's OS.. and somehow make money doing it.. - there, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3"Jobs is too much of a liberal iconoclast to be taken seriously by the corporate world"
Huh?
The amount of money one has most certainly does not reflect on one's character. Need I bring up that wealthy elitist German corporate types strongly supported the Nazis? (Not to mention even some at GE, Kodak, DuPont, Shell Oil, Exxon, General Motors, Hearst, and Ford had dealings with the "Aryans" nearly to the point WW2 started). Being a successful businessman clearly doesn't reflect if one should be taken "seriously" as a human being.
While rightwing Randroid exploiters like Rupert Murdock use tax loopholes to funnel funds to offshore accounts to avoid paying taxes (which we end up picking up the slack for I might add), philanthropists like Gates and Buffet give away billions to people that are really suffering. There is also George Soros, Paul Allen, Eli Broad, Ron Burkle, David Geffen, George Lucas, Pierre Omidyar, Sumner Redstone, Steven Spielberg, Ted Turner, Oprah Winfrey, Jerry Yang, Mort Zuckerman, Jeff Bezos... and all of them put something back into the society. The list of wealthy liberals is pretty extensive and most certainly demonstrates that being a liberal is hardly a sign that someone is less competent at business.
I'd say it's more likely being rightwing is a signal that a person is probably elitist, racist, selfish, and very pro-violence. (there are exceptions like Michael Dell and Michael Bloomberg but not many others these days). A few key figures that I believe helped put GWB in office and supported the Iraq war.
Libertarian Rupert Murdock(Fox), Sheldon Adelson (casinos), Steve Wynn(casinos), Abigail Johnson(inherited Fidelity), Billy Joe McCombs(Clear Channel), Charles Schwab (Schwab), Walton family(inherited Walmart), Richard DeVos (Amway), T Boone Pickens (oil), Libertarians Charles and David Koch (oil), Philip Anschutz(Rail and oil). - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2"They always say it's going to be the best year ever, each year."
Yeah but last year they didnt unveil the iPhone {int endSarcasm;} - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Christmans are the men from Christ? The 12 apostles?
- Aggaman, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Possibly.
Apple has had a remarkable couple of years. They are making some of the best machines they have in years, and OS X is now at a pretty good stage.
I really have no idea of what they can do to make it better. It's a good time to be a mac user. -
