- CraigJ, on 10/12/2007, -7/+67A crapload of people paid $500 for the RAZR. Compared to that this is a bargain. I plan to buy 2.
- brstilson, on 10/12/2007, -12/+62screw the phone, I'd pay that much just for the mac-in-your-pocket features.
- jakebarnes, on 10/12/2007, -4/+51Why are you, misplacing commas?

So much anger... The path to the dark side you are on... (but without all of the cool powers)
More to the point chill out son. It's just a phone. People like what you don't, accept it. Or you'll grow up a lonely bastard. - devo6273, on 10/12/2007, -6/+27Yeah but by your logic, all stores would have to at least tear down their facades and rebuild every few years just to keep "in style." As long as Apple maintains itself in the public eye, people will go to their stores. And of course I'm sure their advertisements in the windows and such will change over time to match what is popular.
You know why Gateway stores didn't succeed? How many times have you ever heard someone say "oh I just can't wait till I can afford that gateway (insert product name here)" or "I wish my parents would buy me a new Gateway..."
If there is one thing Apple is good at, its marketing and creating hype for their products. iPod may not be the absolute best mp3 player out there, but go walk around a college campus and see how practically everyone has those telltale white earbuds. It's insane. - brstilson, on 10/12/2007, -2/+22"You know why Gateway stores didn't succeed?"
They failed because Gateway couldn't figure out the whole POINT of a brick-and-mortar store. When you go to an Apple store, you can pay them money and walk out with a computer. Gateway Country Stores were nothing more than very expensive (to Gateway) ordering kiosks, they were pointless overhead. Name one customer that is going to get dressed and drive out to a store to ORDER a computer, when they can just stay in their PJs and order the damn thing over the phone or on the internet.
THAT is why Gateway lost it's number one position. They added overhead at a huge expense (they actually built one of these stores from SCRATCH near where I live) and it was completely unnecessary. People want to go to stores and walk out with MERCHANDISE, not packing slips. - Culled, on 10/12/2007, -9/+28I have a hard time believing that Apple Stores were created just to roll out one product. I mean according to Wikipedia Apple confirmed that they would be building retail stores in May 2001. Six years seems like a really long time to be working on one phone.
- Mwongozi, on 10/12/2007, -4/+22MySpace is in fact blocked at Apple Stores, and is the only site with such a privilege.
- nayr, on 10/12/2007, -3/+19....
you realize that this is about the apple store, right? not some huge apple-microsoft flamewar?
On a slightly unrelated note, gates has over $70 billion. with a b. A big b. $4.1 is nothing; the lint in his pockets. - PathDaemon, on 10/12/2007, -1/+16Holy *****, there IS an Apple master plan!
- SyDIGG, on 10/12/2007, -0/+14They weren't built specifically for the iPhone but for a product like the iPhone where retail presence is crucial for the launch of such product.
- alteratti, on 10/12/2007, -5/+18@ brivapor
"who cares about a $500 phone"
you (subconciously) do, by taking the pains of writing a stupid comment about it. - xioner, on 10/12/2007, -2/+14Personally, I think that the Gateway stores failed because they were terrible.
I've only been in an Apple store once, but it seemed pretty nice.
On the other hand, I went to a gateway store several years ago, all set to buy a nice mid-range ($500-$800) computer, and they not only didn't have any in stock, but were rude and said it would take longer for them to get one in that it would have taken to order one from the website. They also claimed that several of the offers posted on the Gateway site (and advertised as in-store offers) did not apply, and instead tried to push us into buying a computer that cost twice as much.
So we went to BJ's and got a cheep HP. It died of motherboard failure about 3 years later, but it worked fine.
In those 3 years the Gateway stores failed (deservedly) and I managed to save enough to get a good Dell for my parents and an Apple for myself. - fuzzmeister, on 10/12/2007, -4/+16What Jobs is saying that Apple stores will function just like Verizon stores, Cingular stores, etc for the iPhone. Thousands of people walk buy Apple stores in malls every day, which is a great chance to pitch the iPhone. They can also get support in that same store.
- conman16x, on 10/12/2007, -5/+16@fluidity
So where has there been a big trend of people bragging about how many iPhones they're going to buy? I certainly haven't seen it. CraigJ was the first person I've ever seen say they were going to buy more than one and I'm pretty sure he was joking.
Quit trying so hard to find reasons to be mad at Apple fans. - sportz103, on 10/12/2007, -12/+22Oh please, like donating money to help save lives and improve the overall living experience for people in an underdeveloped needy country is even NEARLY as important as a cellular phone with a picture of an apple on it!
- cplkai, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9MP4 is a sort of container format. MP4 audio files (AAC), don't use the H.264 codec.
- iFungus, on 10/12/2007, -7/+15Investors take Steve Jobs seriously because he is the company. Without him, Apple would go down quickly.
- Vermifax, on 10/12/2007, -3/+11Don't hold your breath.
On second though, be my guest. - selectodude, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10MP4 is H.264.
For some reason, Apple refuses to call it MP4. - Refrag, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8I'm buying two Iphones. One will be for my wife. How can you people not get that people buying more than one Iphone won't be using all of them themselves?!
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9With a name like fufubag, maybe you aren't the best person to be pointing out what's gay or not. On second thought, maybe you are.

1) Some retards love the ***** out of the iPhone.
2) Everyone hates the PS3.
Therefore, the retards who love the ***** out the of iPhone hate the PS3.
QED, bitches. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6"said Jobs, looking resplendent in a black turtleneck and faded jeans."
his jeans are dark blue with no fading at all.. - Bleeblaow, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7Same retards who love the ***** out of the iPhone probably hate the PS3 for costing $600. Take pleasure in digging me down, hypocrites.
- gr8one, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Is that an iPhone in your pocket....
- ajb2015, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5I hate how he refers to it as "iphone" and not "the iphone." It isn't a ***** person.

How Digg Works: If you agree with and/or like a comment, digg it. If you disagree with and/or dislike a comment, bury it.
Stories about Apple products aren't segregated to only Apple fans. Anyone who wants to cant digg or bury any comment they want. There isn't some sort of Apple "fanboy" (or "fanboi" if you're Avril Lavigne) conspiracy where all the people who like Apple get together and make plans to bury certain comments. It just so happens that there are more people who tend to disagree with a lot of the anti-Apple comments than there are who agree.
If you feel differently then you can certainly digg those comments up. You have the power! - mgkwho, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3How were the stores conceived for this moment if the iPhone has only been an idea for two-and-a-half years or so, but Apple retail stores have been around for almost six?
-=|Mgkwho - vitaboy, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Ummm, it obviously escapes you, but Jobs wasn't making a literal point as much as he was making a philosophical one.
The whole point of creating the Apple Stores was to create a venue where Apple products could be viewed in a positive environment. When Apple announced the retail initiative, analysts and pundits up and down the chain were calling it a disaster even before the first brick had been laid. Never mind that Steve, as usual, saw that one could not get a positive Mac experience at the usual retail outlets and independent Mac retailers were a hit-and-miss affair.
The Apple Store have proven to be hugely successful beyond anyone's imagination, producing more revenue per square foot than even Tiffany's. It's highly doubtful the Mac and the iPod would be where they are today without the Apple Store because if anything, it forces other retailers to shape up to compete against them, or be left out of the sharing at the table. Best Buy and Walmart tried to ignore the iPod for a while by refusing to carry them, but that just sent even more customers to the Apple Stores. Eventually, both caved and embraced the iPod. Best Buy is now even experimenting with Macs.
So yes, this is why the Apple Store were created. All Jobs is saying that the iPhone launch will be looked upon as a seminal moment in tech and computer history, much as the Macintosh and iPod launches are looked upon today. Apple's iPhone strategy is entirely dependent on the existence of the Apple Store because otherwise, Apple would be at the mercy of Cingular/AT&T sales reps. So in a metaphorical sense, all things are converging to the June launch and the Apple Stores will enter a new phase in retail history.
A year from now, people are going to be talking to their SO on a cell phone at an Apple Store and say, "Hey, honey, I'm at the iPhone Store...." - nsjoker, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4I've owned several Macs in the past and enjoyed using them so I'm definitely not anti-Apple here, but the prospect of a $499/599 Apple cellular phone doesn't excite me when the Samsung BlackJack has much of its functionality sans random access voicemail and sans the Apple premium.
- vitaboy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Hey, it's good that Bill Gates is doing so much for charity these days. Of course, all that money he is now giving away came by smashing competitors illegally in the marketplace. Sorta like robbing a bank, then giving back 5% of the money you stole, and then being lauded for your compassion.
Still, a good deed is a good deed.
Of course, Gates' charity has nothing to do with the Apple Stores. Then again, I hope you're not trying to compensate psychologically for Microsoft's technical failures by pointing to Gates' charity as some kind of excuse. - MisterKen, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Steve's 'Reality Distortion Engine' is not working on me.
I seem to remember the hyperbole about 'getting Macs in front of people' and 'expanding our presence'.
Oh please...just to roll out the iPhone?...a product you said the company had no need for 18 months ago?
Pffft...I was born last week, not yesterday. - Bleeblaow, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"On a slightly unrelated note, gates has over $70 billion. with a b. A big b. $4.1 is nothing; the lint in his pockets."
Not like he has to donate *****. - TheCount, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Best retailer? I don't know if I'd go that far, last time I was in an Apple store to visit the Genius Bar, I couldn't even find a place to stand and wait without getting jostled as people passed. I can't even imagine the type of madness that will seize the place when they release the iPhone.
It was hard to even have a conversation with the person I was with, since everyone seemed like they were all up in your business. I sat at the Bar and had some guy breathing down my neck cause we were all crammed so close. - valkraider, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The AppleStore being so full you got jostled around is what signifies they are a good retailer.
The empty Gateway stores with no one in sight is what signified they were a bad retailer.
Retailers WANT their stores to be full - even if it makes it slightly inconvenient.
I will buy an iPhone version 2 - let them work out some kinks first, and put it on a network other than Singular.
And I remember lots of people, myself included, saying "Who the hell would ever pay $500 for an MP3 player?" when they announced the iPod. And look where that went... - vitaboy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2@Mwongozi,
MySpace is, in fact, not blocked at the Apple Store. I don't know where you get that idea because I see teenagers on MySpace all the time at the Apple Stores here in the Bay Area. - Vermifax, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2If it makes you feel any better, there are many boring phones from numerous manufacturers (foreign and domestic) that would most likely suit your consumer criteria.
I'm a Mac user and a Cingular customer, so...I'll be making a consumer choice in June that doesn't parallel yours.
Good luck with whatever you choose. - brstilson, on 10/12/2007, -4/+5", but instead of the employees not knowing anything they think they know everything, and they think they are better than you, when instead they live in the back of their pickup trucks."
No, that's just like Best Buy employees. - Leviss, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@vitaboy
its up to the individual store if they want to block it or not, they will if it becomes a problem, but if its not then why bother - karbonx, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2it's a nice phone, now that the new batteries are coming with them, but i still cant get over the fact that it doesn't have wi-fi and cingular doesn't have 3G in my area.
- mpancha, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Why anyone dugg this is beyond me... if you bothered to read the, and I hate to call it this, "article" you'd know that there was nothing of any importance stated in the article. Why digg drivvle like this?
- tuartboy, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4To the best of my knowledge, you actually have to know quite a bit to be a Genius for Apple. Pretty good testing and I know that all the ones I have run across are quite passionate users.
Say that about Best Buy... - TheReport, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4" Theri entire customer base are unemployed."
You're an idiot. How are you still alive, without anyone telling you to inhale and exhale? - sarahmaddelson, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0Ummm... My dog loves it :)
- PepeGSay, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3Apple has just wanted to believe that they aren't a 'consumer electronics' company for some reason. Now that their hit is a consumer electronic instead of a PC they have to do a bit of "reimagining."
