- trotskyist, on 01/11/2008, -5/+33This would really be a pain in the ass for Starbucks customers who don't have iPhones. In essence, everyone with this app would be able to skip to the front of the line.
- sockpuppets, on 01/11/2008, -2/+29Which of these buttons calls your parent to come pick you up?
- pr0lixity, on 01/11/2008, -1/+25great. then people will be making apps for drinks on the "secret barista menu".
- pantone354, on 01/11/2008, -4/+27I have to admit, that's freaking pimp looking.
- Falldog, on 01/11/2008, -34/+53My god, this is such a ridiculously useless idea.
- sockpuppets, on 01/11/2008, -3/+20Don't forget to wear your black turtleneck!
- inactive, on 01/11/2008, -2/+17People really need an iPhone to order coffee?
- JoeyDeacon, on 01/11/2008, -2/+16 wouldn't be hard to order a coffee in Starbucks if they used a few normal conventions and didn't ask so many ***** questions.
"A......."
"Take away sir"
"A medium....."
"Take away sir?"
"A medium cappucino...."
"Take away sir?"
"Let me ***** finish and I'll tell you! A medium cappucino to ***** take away please"
"Grande?"
"What?
"Grande?"
"No I said medium please"
"Yes sir that is a grande"
"Err ok, do you know what grande means.....oh nevermind"
"Chocolate on that?"
"Arrgghh"
"Skinny or full milk?
"Argghh please I just want a medium cappucino to go, pelease take amy money and let me leave"
"Anything else with that sir"
"Bang............................................................................................................" - sockpuppets, on 01/11/2008, -1/+14You should have gotten the 16gb version.
- mrjoanofarc, on 01/11/2008, -3/+16You really need a Starbucks employee to design this... because some of it's a little awkward. "My Favorite" should be "Favorite(s)"; "Cream" should be "Whip"... and what about "Foam"? "Cream" would really be Half-and-Half for use in hot/iced coffees...
Also, about the 'avoiding the lines' thing-- don't you still have to stand in line for them to scan your iPhone's semacode? I'm not even sure Sbux scanners read semacode...
I know this is just a mock-up and it would be really polished before the final version, but these are all little details/problems that might slip through when they could be prevented. I work at Sbux. :x - trotskyist, on 01/11/2008, -1/+12lol, I didn't know Bill O'Reilly browsed digg
- bking, on 01/11/2008, -2/+13You're right. Keeping a middleman between you and the person making your drink is a time tested, wonderful concept. Data input is difficult, and should only be handled by professionals/baristas.
- aussieNickuss, on 01/11/2008, -0/+9The app would run on both.
- coheedcollapse, on 01/11/2008, -9/+17Yeah. My Trendy Hipster meter just exploded.
- moesker007, on 01/11/2008, -10/+18this is great, I would love if this is what it looked like/if it was actually implemented. Gorgeous
- amiches, on 01/11/2008, -2/+10Stop making ***** up.
- E3L1, on 01/11/2008, -0/+8yay! less people to have to interact with personally!
- orion9, on 01/11/2008, -0/+8now if steve jobs can negotiate a lower pricing at starbucks...i am sold.
- robmcm, on 01/11/2008, -0/+8Would be much better if you could send that on your way, then use the code to pick it up, having paid via you phone bill or over the net!
- wipis, on 01/11/2008, -0/+7I want to bring back the Automat. I think this guy could help.
- Drewjames, on 01/11/2008, -3/+10i would really love to see this concept perfected in the next few years. more than just Starbucks or even iPhones and iPod touches. i think this idea has huge potential with all kinds of markets.
- MacMasore, on 01/11/2008, -1/+8That Phil Lu is one hell of a designer!
- roboticelephant, on 01/11/2008, -9/+15I think since we already know that the iPhone blends, anyone who cuts ahead of me because of their stupid phone will get that sprinkled on top.
- s4m1k, on 01/11/2008, -6/+12Star bucks is *****, they totally exploit bean farmers in ethiopia, farmers make 50cents a day. Stop supporting corporations who use such low business practices , http://www.blackgoldmovie.com/
- rogerbly, on 01/11/2008, -0/+6That reminds me... back in 2001 NTT (Japan) was experimenting with using i-mode phones to buy things from vending machines and stores by displaying a bar code that was scanned at the point of sale and billed to your phone. Anyone know if that went into production?
- bking, on 01/11/2008, -0/+6I think the data from the actual order would be sent via Wifi. The semacode would only act as a personal identifier to "prove" that the user is there, and submit that order to the line.
- bking, on 01/11/2008, -0/+6The line would be quicker than waiting for a handful of people to stumble through their orders. Everybody does it on the own time, on their iPhone, then they just walk up and zap the thing.
The biggest problem would be schematics. The line itself offers a buffer for the drinks to be made, while customers are corralled in one area. Without a 5+ minute line, all those people will be dispersed in the shiop, waiting for drinks to get made. This concept could lead to a lot of bitching ("my drink never takes this long") and space issues.
I like the idea a lot, but it would require a lot of adjustment from Starbucks. - mcdowalla, on 01/11/2008, -1/+5Would love to know how you can send the 'notes' items with a sema code ! lol
- SSUK, on 01/11/2008, -1/+5Just don't say it's a gimmick, the fanboys don't like it when you do...
- LastDitchHero, on 01/11/2008, -0/+4Mobile payment systems like this are really paving a way for the future but will it hurt our daily social interaction? People already treat cashiers like the scum of the Earth as it is. I think some people could spend a little less time chatting it up with their myspace sweeties and interacting with real life people in a line.
Glad I won't use this because I value talking to a human. Heck I wouldn't even need this at Starbucks because I am not a jerk to people like so many people I see in line. When the people see me they ask "the usual?" and it is usually done before I even pay for it. Heck sometimes they just let me have it cause I am patient with them always and tip well.
Don't let technology hurt your daily interaction with people. - macfanboi, on 01/11/2008, -0/+4Can't wait for the Apple Commercials. Can they be even more annoying than the Visa Commercials? Break Dancing iPhone owners ordering Venti Lattes.
- ThirdPrize, on 01/11/2008, -3/+7Yes, because saying "a grande latte please" is just like sooo hard.
- Faust06, on 01/11/2008, -8/+12Too bad that's a picture of an iPod Touch, not an iPhone
- unleashedlive, on 01/11/2008, -0/+4Some Starbucks locations print out stickers instead of calling out the drinks. This app would make sense there.
- BreakingBnj, on 01/11/2008, -0/+3It looks dark, evil, kind of scary, yet something it is something that will sell extremely good, thus raking in the cash.
Perfect for Starbucks and Apple. - inactive, on 01/11/2008, -1/+4I wouldn't mind this for the movie theater (both tickets and snacks). Fast Food would be a lot faster, too. Instead of telling a retarded girl what you want (and having her constantly look at the menu above her head for things you ordered that ARE NOT ON THAT MENU... Oh, and she's not new. I've gone 3-4 times over the past 2 months and every time I order she has to look at the value menu when I'm ordering off the dollar menu. It drives me insane!) and having her hunt and peck what your order is, you simply enter it yourself, swipe a card, and take your food.
- bkemper, on 01/11/2008, -1/+4If I paid by credit card to the iTunes Store, then i wouldn't have to stand in the ordering line at all. I could just walk in and pick up my coffee. It would make the ordering line move faster without me in it telling the person my order and giving them money and getting change.
- rumor, on 01/11/2008, -1/+4lol triumph.
- sonicularulus, on 01/11/2008, -1/+4if this really happens, we can start seeing starbucks to be the iphone owner headquarters.
- Kraemahz, on 01/11/2008, -2/+5No, no, no. See the 2D bar code in the image at the far left? It seems like the system is merely designed to facilitate ordering at the register. You'd scan your order instead of having the explain the minute complexities of it to the barista every time. Which he/she would have to then manually put on a cup for the person on bar anyway.
Man, now it doesn't seem useful at all. - inactive, on 01/11/2008, -0/+3Except it uses WiFi.
- inactive, on 01/11/2008, -1/+4To see what it might look like?
- Tyrghast, on 01/11/2008, -0/+3how ***** lazy are the fanboys getting nowadays?
- inactive, on 01/11/2008, -0/+3Or, hey, maybe you're actually meeting with someone and don't want to have to stop working to stand in line to order a ***** coffee?
- joeycerone, on 01/11/2008, -10/+13Beautiful. Now I'm off to starbucks!
- osbjmg, on 01/11/2008, -1/+3How long does it take to order coffee? What about the human element? Sounds rather silly...
- mercano, on 01/11/2008, -0/+2You forgot the "BREAKING: " bit at the beginning.
- Terrk, on 01/11/2008, -1/+3Zing!
- inactive, on 01/11/2008, -0/+2There's a difference between half and half and cream.
- Anditsonfire, on 01/11/2008, -0/+2I suggest you read The Undercover Economist by Tim Hartford. It covers this issue well.
