- Aereo, on 10/29/2007, -1/+77I am your only hope.
- joeycerone, on 10/29/2007, -3/+62attention apple: add this and get rid of the damn fishtank, that one is lame.
- markdall, on 10/29/2007, -0/+48EXECUTE ORDER 66!
- meatmcguffin, on 10/29/2007, -0/+36You move out the way, it takes a picture and the you move back in frame
- virtualball, on 10/29/2007, -0/+36Was it on the Leopard betas? If so, can't someone extract the real one?
- ChromaVita, on 10/29/2007, -1/+36I like the fish tank one...
apple: add this, and add 7 more effects so there can just be another page, and you won't have to get rid of any. - brewno2k, on 10/29/2007, -0/+29It's awesome. Soon we'll be seeing more and more effects. I'm personally looking forward to that "water" (aka Hero) effect as seen in here:
http://img522.imageshack.us/img522/9758/heroqo8.jp ... - gorkish, on 10/29/2007, -0/+23Yeah its on video. It does what is called difference keying to isolate the foreground from the background. Foreground is anything that moves; background is anything that doesn't. Once you can more or less separate the two you can then apply filters to either. Doing it realtime on video is something of a trick, but on the mac these effects are composited in Quarts which means they are done mostly on the GPU. The difference key is probably still done on the CPU.
- inactive, on 10/29/2007, -4/+25It's only for Leopard. iChat for Tiger is teh sux compared to Leopard.
- r2builder, on 10/29/2007, -0/+21Did the photo effect make the final cut? - Using a photo of the Mona Lisa or Steve Balmer, and replacing their mouths?
- bob12321, on 10/29/2007, -1/+15From my understanding it will only work in Leopard as that it has a much updated iChat (I am not sure if the Tiger client got updated)
- Decimal, on 10/29/2007, -0/+10It's a filter for video chat, so the whole effect is completely dynamic. When you first activate the filter, iChat asks you to step out of the frame and it takes a snapshot. Then when you move back into the frame it can distinguish between the background and the person in the foreground. There are all sorts of clever compositing tricks that can be done with the two layers.
- maxshanly, on 10/31/2007, -1/+11Star Wars? Pffft. Looks more like he's leaping from life to life putting right what once went wrong.
- valadares, on 10/28/2007, -1/+10If they don't do it, people do it.
- monkeymad2, on 10/29/2007, -0/+8nope
- bitspace, on 10/29/2007, -0/+8Only in Leopard. The ability to apply effects in realtime in iChat AV is a feature of iChat in Leopard.
- arjie, on 10/28/2007, -1/+8I don't use a Mac, so can anyone tell me exactly how this works? Is it only for a single snapshot or does it somehow manage to do this for a video. If it's the latter then it's freaking crazy! Damn good!
- arjie, on 10/29/2007, -0/+7Thanks guys, it sounds totally awesome. I was wondering how it filled in the background :D Sounds like some heavy work though. Damn cool.
- tito184, on 10/29/2007, -0/+6Now I can finally be invisible like the Predator!
- ryanmm, on 10/29/2007, -1/+6I dont think a keynote is exactly considered advertising. If they had talked about it on their list of 300+ new features, then perhaps you would be correct.
Many developers taut features that never make it into a final product, which is probably more a case of unrealistic expectations than false advertising. If you look at some of the stuff Microsoft said when they talked about Vista you'll notice many features that didn't make it into the final product, or have only recently been added. - mikal, on 10/29/2007, -1/+6I had no idea what this was about, but this iChat/Leopard video cleared things up for me: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nTPz9G9MoNI
Seems pretty sweet. Hope to see these features in Ubuntu in, oh, six-seven years time :d - nick2, on 10/29/2007, -1/+5Someone NEEDS to make this effect.
- BlueStarr, on 10/29/2007, -1/+5Thank to the dev for his. :)
- skinrock, on 10/29/2007, -3/+7How is it going to know what's behind you...
I guess the same question applies for the Star Wars one... - atticus8, on 10/29/2007, -1/+4LAAAAAAAAME! I was going to do that Conan O'Brien segment for days. I was working on my Texan pronunciation of "stratedgery".
- Catgofire, on 10/29/2007, -0/+3Oh my god, now people are going to have to make TWO whole facebook albums of stupid pictures of them and their friends with all the wicked awesome effects.
- deadnoob, on 10/29/2007, -1/+4i tried doing the photobooth method but couldnt get it to work in tiger
- Kavok, on 10/28/2007, -0/+3Did you even read the article?
- msgyrd, on 10/29/2007, -0/+2Running iChat with the effects on my C2D Macbook eats about 30% of each core. I'd hope it's less on a computer that has a decent GPU. Either way, usually you don't usually need CPU power for other things while video chatting, so 30% doesn't really bother me (CPUs sit idle for most people most of the time anyways).
- krakelohm, on 10/29/2007, -0/+2well then it will not work. Anyway how often are you walking around using ichat? Seriously now.
- virtualball, on 10/29/2007, -1/+2Well, that's creepy. "Nicole" was wearing a v-neck cut version of "John" and Steve's wardrobe... :P
- nroth, on 10/28/2007, -0/+1its a folder not file....Click on your hard drive, then navigate to /Library/Compositions
- otomo, on 10/28/2007, -0/+1Yes, but that probably has copyright issues. As for me, I have a bona fide copy of leopard beta that I got legally so I have no qualms yoinking the other quartz files. The later hologram effect is a bit cooler than the original one demo'd.
I guess I will go buy my imac today to get the full retail version. - MacBandit, on 10/28/2007, -0/+1It's the video stream.
- inactive, on 10/31/2007, -0/+1Ah, nice Red Dwarf reference
- stoppedcode12, on 10/29/2007, -0/+1So what happens when you are on the move with the macbook/macbook pro?
- Wailord, on 10/29/2007, -1/+2I don't anyone is going to sue because they didn't get a hologram effect in their IM client...
- destructo66, on 10/29/2007, -0/+1NIce, Open the file in QuartzComposer (Install the Dev Tools). Then you can customize it as you wish.
QC is truly an amazing development environment - meatmcguffin, on 10/29/2007, -0/+1Parts of your face become transparent or the chosen effect is applied to portions of the background which can give some weird effects. You really need a stable surface with uniform lighting to make it worthwhile
- sambapati87, on 10/28/2007, -1/+2please, what else has linux had for ages? don't worry if its a crude, slow, user-unfriendly precursor. it was probably better, we just dont understaaand it.
- tracydanger, on 10/29/2007, -1/+2I hope there will be a website with a list of different plug-ins to use with iChat.
- yevkasem, on 10/30/2007, -1/+2wait, so the filter makes the guy translucent, and i can see objects on the shelves behind him. how does the camera see through him to know what's back there?
clearly, the author is actually translucent-blue in real life -- buried as inaccurate. - andrewdevlin, on 10/29/2007, -0/+1The easiest way to duplicate the hologram effect is to put an "H" on your forehead.
- msgyrd, on 10/28/2007, -1/+2Your troll-fu is weak and obvious.
- tucsonwc, on 10/29/2007, -0/+1should be in your home directory if you have 10.5 aka leopard installed.
- BlueStarr, on 10/29/2007, -1/+1lol
- davepascoe, on 10/28/2007, -1/+1very nice!
- EclipseMullet, on 10/29/2007, -1/+1Geeky
- ecbtln, on 10/29/2007, -0/+0i have the beta, but where are the quartz effects on the beta? I cant seem to find them anywher
- egarc, on 10/29/2007, -0/+0This question has been asked and answered.
