- aszymczyk, on 05/08/2008, -9/+267They better hope apple doesn't come out with a 3G/GPS ready iPhone next month...
- braineater2448, on 05/08/2008, -7/+162Since INSTINCT LACKS Wi-Fi COMPLETELY, that's as good as its gonna get. I'll go with the iPhone.
- daGUY, on 05/08/2008, -3/+118On the one hand, you do have to give Sprint credit for actually having the guts to put their phone directly up against an iPhone, without fudging the UI or anything like that (as far as I can tell). On the other hand, it has the side effect of making the iPhone look much better by comparison - a larger, brighter screen, smoother interface, etc.
I'm guessing that they target 3G and GPS features because those are the only things they can use to make the iPhone look bad, but it's a hollow victory in that the Sprint phone won't even be out until June - precisely when the iPhone will gain 3G and GPS. Brilliant! - amawg9, on 05/08/2008, -5/+110Does Sprint realize that they are spending $100 mil to promote the iPhone? It looks a lot better sitting next to their phone.
- agsinger, on 05/08/2008, -8/+94except their device isnt nearly as elegant as the iphone - i'd love to see how it holds up to scratches or the insane amount of detail and awesome user interface put into the iphone
seems like they cloned it (but not as well) and added 3g...great - thedragon4453, on 05/08/2008, -3/+88Meh, I don't think its much gonna matter. Its not the instinct was the first 3g phone. I mean, millions have already chosen the 3g-less iphone even when there are plenty of phones with 3g.
Pay attention cell phone execs: Stop trying to beat the iPhone on features. There are plenty of "kitchen sink" phones that include every conceivable feature. But people choose the iPhone because of the experience. Just about everything on the iPhone is painfully easy, and its an elegant device. Start looking at the whole device and user experience rather than a spec sheet. - JlmAWP, on 05/08/2008, -4/+70"Starting May 9th, Sprint will begin a massive, $100 marketing campaign aimed straight at the iPhone's nether regions."
Sponsoring a little-league baseball team? - DaffyDuck, on 05/08/2008, -12/+70That looks like fun. Let me try.
1: Hello, I'm an iPhone.
2: And I'm an instinct.
1: I have a real OS and a large number of excellent 3rd party apps, including Spore, Epocrates, Palm emulation, Sling Player, etc. on the way.
2: ... - psykiv, on 05/08/2008, -5/+54I LOLed at "Somewhere in this ginourmous circle"
- SgtAl, on 05/08/2008, -3/+47I bet 9 of 10 people would still choose the iPhone, it's just a better looking device.
- ronnsprocket, on 05/08/2008, -9/+45the music on the first video makes me feel like i was watching the fat kid (or asthmatic) finish the mile in 7th grade gym class.
- fowleryo, on 05/08/2008, -7/+40even with that comparison photo, i'd probably choose the iphone over the.. i don't even know what it's called, actually.
- elvis699, on 05/08/2008, -3/+34looks good, but a year after the iphone has come out? with version 2 so close i wouldn't be sure at all about it being an 'iPhone killer'
*throws up at my own cliche* - JlmAWP, on 05/08/2008, -5/+36This comment sponsored by Sprint.
"Sprint. We didn't even come close." - inactive, on 05/08/2008, -4/+34That thing looks like a clunky piece of ***** sitting next to an iPhone, what the hell was sprint thinking showing them side by side?
- inactive, on 05/08/2008, -1/+29Good luck with that.
- tcardone05, on 05/08/2008, -3/+30Typical Giz:
UPDATE: Sprint wrote us to clarify that prior to what we'd heard earlier (from an unofficial source within the company), these spots will only be seen online. The major televised marketing campaign will begin in June and Sprint does "not have a final total" for the device's marketing budget.
Ya know, you coulda asked before you posted this. - asiarock, on 05/08/2008, -1/+27Wow, the first thing I noticed was just how much bigger the screen on the iPhone was when they were side by side. I've got to admit that the (first) commercial is pretty funny, but at the end of the day, the instinct phone just looks like a poor imitation of the real thing.
- ModernGeek, on 05/08/2008, -2/+28Extinct on arrival. Second Gen iPhone is probably going run circles around it before it even has a chance.
- inactive, on 05/08/2008, -3/+28It is a made up figure. The true amount is $1.75 GAZILLION!
- TheRealToma, on 05/08/2008, -3/+26I see what you did with the title. To be fair, its (Instinct) is a good phone and looks like it does the job. But seriously, its a clone. Why bother? Make something new and creative and stop trying to copy stuff. The iphone killer will probably look nothing like the iphone.
- zenbiont, on 05/08/2008, -1/+21What sort of douchebag needs a phone to figure out what cross street they're at? I love when people like this find themselves away from technology and in need of some ***** common sense.
- Whaines, on 05/08/2008, -1/+21They only fail I see is just above me.
- Chirp08, on 05/08/2008, -0/+20but ours goes to 11
- rgaino, on 05/08/2008, -1/+20Give me a million dollars and I will make a better video for you Sprint.
- Cylexis, on 05/08/2008, -2/+21sprint isn't stupid. the idea is to get people locked into sprint contracts *right before* the iphone goes 3g. not everyone reads up on this stuff and knows that the iphone is going 3g very soon (and might even be subsidized down to 200 bucks!?)
i feel sorry for the poor souls who fall for their plan =/. - screwy3333, on 05/08/2008, -0/+18this is going to be like the dreamcast vs playstation but without shenmue
- breezytrees, on 05/08/2008, -6/+24wtf $100 mill? where's the source for this figure??
- jemka, on 05/08/2008, -12/+29That looks fun. Let me try.
1: Hello, I'm like most people and use a phone only to call and text people.
2: ... - Tenoq, on 05/08/2008, -1/+16You don't look call talking on an iPhone, IMO. Too big. But it is the UI that sells.
- Xcel, on 05/08/2008, -3/+18The first one, alright I can deal with that. iPhone does have slow internet.
The second though... notice how after they both go to their maps, the iPhone user waits a few seconds for the maps to pop up on the Instinct before going ahead and pressing the location button on the iPhone. Not only that, you can continue zooming into the center of that "giant circle" and get a closer look into your location on the iPhone. - craftyguy, on 05/08/2008, -3/+17Wow, a whole $100?!
What are they thinking pouring THAT much money down the drain in the fight against the iPhone? The stockholders must be furious! - DteK, on 05/08/2008, -3/+16its like when your a kid and all your friends get nikes for the first day of school, but you get sykes.
They look similar, but they are just not the same. - mpeters13, on 05/08/2008, -0/+13Siigh... Isn't that the truth? I'm a cellphone junkie who switched from Sprint to AT&T. After having tons of PDAs with more functionality than the iPhone but less appeal... not to mention the added monotony of loading 8 applications to clone the iPhone interface and features... Well.. you find that it's easier to just buy the damned iPhone and deal with 2.5G and no GPS. The iPhone is so simple to use, that even without buttons, I can use the thing while driving. The UI responds consistently every time. There's rarely lag, and the only time I have to reboot the device is well.. never. (Different situation when jailbroken... but whatever.) I can browse just about anywhere with Safari (lag free!) with the exception of sites without flash... It's not just plain jain HTML like PIE... I can actually use scripted webpages without squinting or throwing the device across the room...
- fahrvergnuugen, on 05/08/2008, -2/+15They should have spent $100 million developing a better phone....
- fugazied, on 05/08/2008, -0/+13Yeah the differences between the UI is very noticable... The iphone just looks a lot easier to use, particularly with the keyboard and screen-size differences.
- RobotBuddha, on 05/08/2008, -1/+14That's what always gets me, and forced me to eventually break down and just buy an iphone. It's already been cloned a number of times over. Every single attempt has been shockingly inept. Giant glaring holes where features almost everyone would want should be.
- streak, on 05/08/2008, -6/+18Yeah, it just works... next month maybe... if you have a clear view of the sky and already synched up with 3 GPS satellites... and pay, what, $10/month extra?
- Majician, on 05/08/2008, -1/+13LAF! You would think that Sprint would GIVE AWAY some type of connectivity on a phone w/o you paying for it!?!?
- streak, on 05/08/2008, -2/+14In-stinked?
- streak, on 05/08/2008, -7/+18how do we know Sprint is committed to spending this much?
- Xcel, on 05/08/2008, -0/+11They are kicking themselves in the nuts by spending all that money..
- bigsteve, on 05/08/2008, -0/+11Last June called, it wants it's list of ***** iPhone grievances back. The SDK? Developer program push with 70/30 pricing? Hellooo? Software 2.0 will deliver Exchange/ActiveSync with push e-mail, calendar, and contact updating, Cisco VPN support, remote wipe, and more all without relying on RIM's service. Hardware 2.0 will deliver, who knows, 3G? GPS?
Get a clue. - inactive, on 05/08/2008, -0/+10I would do it for 50 bucks.
- ricksite, on 05/08/2008, -1/+11The iPhone has push email through Yahoo. You can also set it to check your other accounts every five minutes.
- gllopc, on 05/08/2008, -5/+15Most people used to say that they had no need for high-speed Internet and DVRs. Now they all freak out when their broadband goes down or TiVo breaks. I think smart phones, especially the iPhone, fall in that category.
- mpeters13, on 05/08/2008, -1/+11You forgot the part about resetting the blackberry every day because it locks up or falls into SOS. You've also forgotten about the loss of service for BIS and BES users when RIMs servers tank. Oh and what about the constant rebooting mid-phone call because the memory card isn't properly formatted?
Your blackberry supports an imaginary 64GB micro SD? WAOW. Can we trade blackberries? My Pearl 8120 isn't as cool as yours, I guess.
Annoyances aside, the new RIM 9000 looks kinda cool :p. - unionaire, on 05/08/2008, -1/+11doesn't matter, as pointed out in the linked article, it's not a bright idea to put your competitor's product, looking way cooler in design side by side with yours.
No matter how many functionalities you might offer to have, people will have doubt in how robust it works -- "you mean that UGLY ***** is better than my beloved iPhone??!!!!" - BIOHazard87, on 05/08/2008, -2/+11ROFL "HMMM... Somewhere in this GINORMUS circle....."
