- Kakou, on 10/12/2007, -3/+33I've been to the Mac Store at my local mall and Apple doesn't have enough product of its own to fill that. What the hell would they fill that thing with? A Mac University? More of other people's products? Put an internet lounge in their. Oh, and a paint ball arena.
- bryan4, on 10/12/2007, -4/+31How the hell is this a special report??
- Y0tsuya, on 10/12/2007, -0/+24That's almost the size of Steve Job's ego.
- caliform, on 11/03/2007, -6/+26Damn, that would almost become a tourist attraction as a sort of 'temple'. Look at the astronomical size of that building...
- JavertHolmes, on 10/12/2007, -1/+16Apparently the second and third floors will be used for worship, with the basement used to store any naysayers who notice that the reality distortion field taking up the majority of the ground floor is powered by nothing more than a USB cable coming out of a PC.
- scott1, on 10/12/2007, -3/+18It's a temple dedicated to the Geek god Stetvius Jobus
- ozid, on 10/12/2007, -3/+17You could easily fit an entire store on one level of that, showcasing 5 of each of their products in it.
Why need 4 floors?
No doubt it will be awesome, though. - dpk87, on 10/12/2007, -2/+14I thought the whole point of flagship stores is that there is only one of them...
- anitab83, on 11/03/2007, -4/+15I'd wait in line to see that ... I'm not even a huge apple fan (although I got kinda jealous when I saw the 8 core macs, wow).
- colincsl, on 10/12/2007, -6/+17Does this remind anyone else of a heavily lit prison?
- Ireland, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12Didn't you notice the little bow on top?
- bryan4, on 10/12/2007, -3/+12I wouldn't know but I guess I'll take your word for it...
- brstilson, on 10/12/2007, -6/+13"Walmart is bigger."
Walmart's electronics department isn't. - bryan4, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10That has to be one of the geekiest comments in digg history.
- Urusai, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10Macs are so uber, every store is a flagship store.
- Szandor, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8Real smart comment there. You'll probably be having visitors soon.
- Szandor, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8Where's Mantatten?
- colincsl, on 10/12/2007, -7/+11Bryan, you've never seen a prison?
- Goosemaster, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5maybe it's in case one of their stores encounters an enemy store and like there will be this ultimate battle because it has the flag and maybe like the enemy will try to capture that flag and like win or something by out-mortgaging them or something while ipods and sony clies explode in the air, to the tune of the Smashing Pumpkin's "zero"
*giggles* - dan21328, on 10/12/2007, -4/+8@kakou
Maybe they don't have enough products to fill it, but have you ever been in the one on 5th Avenue? I was there this past Friday - twice - and every single computer in there was taken as well as 2/4 Apple TVs at both times in the day. People were using the kids computers because there weren't any others. The Genius Bar was filled and the lines were 5-6 customers long.
They may not have enough products, but boy do they have the customer base in a city like New York. Hell, after the iPhone and Leopard, the new store might not be big enough. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6huh, within literally 20 seconds walk of both the food network and google's manhattan offices. Now theyll have even more space to show exactly the same model laptop on as many surfaces as possible.
- airwalkery2k, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5I was hoping for something visually as stunning as the Pyramid. This store just looks so generic, despite its size.
- maiku00, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5its got nothing on the glass cube
- DEIx15x8, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Why doesn't Apple ever think different with the stores? They are all the same, a bunch of computers to try out. It's worth going to see one whenever I'm in NYC but why not use some of that space for something new. Why not create an Apple Cafe? They already have the open WiFi at the stores they just need to ad a sitting area and some apple food and drink items. Apple cake, apple cookies, apple tea, it can't be that hard to make an apple themed cafe. Microsoft was able to some how theme food for the 360 at the Japan Xbox 360 cafe.
- lucidmatt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3@Heembo:
Either you visited NYC once and had a bad experience, or you live here now and are just bitter. But "old" manhattan was rich with a combination of both the corporate and the privatley owned. It's not just price that serves as a draw to "mom and pop" shops, it's also familiarity, customer service, and supporting business in your own neighberhood. Incidentally, the "move if you don't like it" attitude is what has destroyed the character of most NYC neighberhoods and turned them into storefront's for expensive boutiques and restaurants. - illt, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3well, with that much space, i'd have a typical minimalistic apple store on the ground level, and a "realistic" showcase of apple in the home/on the go/ on the second floor. Like an ikea-esque mock room/s with apple in every part of your convenient lifestyle
- Szandor, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Especially drunk fools.
- sunimoto, on 10/12/2007, -1/+314th Street & 9th Avenue is not the most convenient location. It's in a "hip" neighborhood, but it's not that easy to get there. I wonder what they'll put there. Apple doesn't really have so many products; a warehouse, perhaps?
Here's a store in SoHo: http://www.nycfoto.com/showPage.php?albumID=719
And this is the latest one in Midtown: http://www.nycfoto.com/showPage.php?albumID=1084 - troye, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2That is overkill.
- macdaddydwj, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3you'd have to be "special" to give a crap
- Szandor, on 10/12/2007, -2/+43 miles apart in Manhatten is not like 3 miles apart in Kansas.
And why does another Apple store bother you so much? Don't like it? Don't go in. Simple. - bpapa, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3It's just what's going on in Manhattan right now. Things are become more and more geared towards the rich, for living space and business space.
- Goombellaofgoom, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Don't you mean the whiteness?
- bsmeteronhigh, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Apple Guy#1: As you can see we have enough shelf space for over 10,000 software titles.
Apple Guy#2: So what do we put on all the shelves?
Apple Guy#1: Think!
Apple Guy#2: The new George Foreman iGrille! - dancenhance, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4They could really make a killing after the bars and clubs close down there. A fool and his money are easily parted!
- capran, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1...and still no Apple Store for Maine. Bah!
Also...it's May 1st and still no new Macs this year (other than the 8-core Pro, which is just a retreaded 2006 model.) - mdownienyc, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3FYI:
If anyone cares, I live around that area. These guys " brokers R.K. Futterman & Associates" manage & own many buildings in that area and are the same thugs that are raising rents on long time residents and on mom & pop shops so that they will be driven out and can move rich clients like Apple into the buildings.
Don't get me wrong, I am all for progression. But these guys raise rents like 15-20% year over year till they squeeze out all the middle class.
I like Apple, but its a shame that Apple is dealing with these brokers and their thug tactics.
There is alot more to this story, too long to write on this digg blog.
Sorry about the rant, but there is always more than meets the eye when you read articles like this one.
Just my 2 cents.
MD in NYC - BLACKEAGLE, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1so is this where all of u go to worship Steve the all mighty BlowJobs
- jimmiem, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Am I the only one thinking "how much space does it take to display the entire Apple product line?"
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Meh, you get to use google maps on the iPhone to find the exit. Worth it.
- gdgi, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4the most boring building ever...how is this news?
- bpapa, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1That is totally true, I thought the third Apple Store was supposed to be near Penn Station, which is an infinitely better location.
For this location you probably would take the ACE first, then walk over to ninth avenue. Not really a prime tourist area, I don't think. - UrbanVoyeur, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4On an island barely bigger than some western shopping malls we do not - I repeat DO NOT - need another Apple Store.
Or Starbucks.
As it is, the two existing Apple stores are less than 3 miles a part. Enough! - nkthen, on 02/27/2008, -0/+1http://www.totallink.info
- netsui, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2No turtleneck clones? Oh well, I suppose there are always the Apple Drones.
Buzz buzz buzz away lil' drones! - cwoolf34, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Could they be planning on carrying lots of products that tie into their own products?
Half a floor could be geared towards video production. Imagine like a B&H Photo, but without having to crawl through the store because it's aisles are so narrow. They could have interactive demos of how the Final Cut Suite is used in everything form broadcast to film. A small studio with a basic 3 camera setup. A control room tied into Apple's products. The same sort of thing for photography, music, etc. You see where I am going with this. That would be like a dream store for all the digital artists in the NYC area. I know SoHo is already aimed at this with their theater, but this could take it to a whole new level. Just a thought. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Get over it; it is A STORE. Not a natural wonder, nor a place where great things occur, just a store. A place that where all the great things in science, engineering, design occurred last month, last year, last decade, SOMEWHERE ELSE. By time you see it, it is old hat.
Being a fan, a fanboy, and adolescently impatient is nothing to be proud of.
When that old Apple stuff is bumping around your flat and is useless, because he helped obsolete it, rememeber he still has his building and your money. - mdownienyc, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Actually, don't respond to me. I don't want to hog the traffic on this blog. Lets just agree to disagree.
- bpapa, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1They could have all kinds of things there. The SOHO Apple Store has a frikkin theater inside.
- brstilson, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1"When that old Apple stuff is bumping around your flat and is useless, because he helped obsolete it, rememeber he still has his building and your money."
Yeah, how dare a computer company upgrade their products! Seriously, do you throw away your Dell or HP just because something better came out for the price? Do you literally take it off your desk and say "oooh woe is me! for something better has been released for the same price, my computer is now USELESS!!!!!!!!!!!" Computers don't magically stop working when something better comes out.
In actuality, people that own Macs tend to get much longer use out of them that your typical PC. Even the pre-2000 G3s and G4s are still good and can run the latest OS X. -
