- Lane, on 01/19/2008, -3/+108"authorized replacements for US $129. The mail-in repair process normally takes 5 business days"
Can I mail it in a manila envelope? - PixelD, on 01/19/2008, -3/+57Yes...Yes you can. Be sure to mark 'FRAGILE' on it in giant red letters. Be sure to use only an 'Apple Certified Red Marker'.
- ferrariman60, on 01/19/2008, -16/+66If it's right under the damn cover, why not expose it so that it can be replaced by the user? Typical Apple BS. Anyone who's cool with this is either an apple fanboy or stupid.
- haxderek, on 01/19/2008, -31/+77Take that, everyone who bought a jump to conclusions mat!
- 3magine, on 01/19/2008, -30/+69it doesn't matter if it takes you 30 ***** seconds to do it. So long as they won't sell the batteries separately you will still have to either mail it in or haul your ass to a store to have it replaced. ***** gay to the max.
- wukillabee, on 01/19/2008, -18/+50burying this lame story only takes seconds
- masterc, on 01/19/2008, -3/+29And if you don't use the Apple Certified Red Marker you may void your warrenty, so be careful!
- krypt1k, on 01/19/2008, -9/+35If the replacement process is 'quite trivial' then why not make it user replaceable in the first place?
- ryan83189, on 01/19/2008, -7/+32yep it can be done in 10 minutes, but it would probably void the warranty.
- encrypter, on 01/19/2008, -2/+24"They cost just $99. We're really excited about this." - Steve Jobs
- fkr3, on 01/19/2008, -1/+22Umm, there's a whole world outside of domestic flights in the USA. Try crossing an ocean.
- captoftheworld, on 01/19/2008, -21/+41Still sucks.
sorry Apple - Tenlow, on 01/19/2008, -5/+24Of what country? It was >9 hours for my flight from the east coast of japan to the west coast of america. A little less for my flight from the east coast of america to the north coast of the netherlands. My flights from west to east in america usually last around 5 hours (sometimes more). Hell, seattle to LA is a 5 hour flight.
- nuclearpotato31, on 01/19/2008, -1/+20Oh yeah? Well the jerk store called, they're running outta you!
- fkr3, on 01/19/2008, -2/+20I caught 18 planes last year.... I don't even know how many different airlines I used but I had exactly 0 plugs in my seats for a laptop.
- diggless, on 01/19/2008, -1/+18I take extra batteries on every flight i go on. usually 4 batteries total.
where have you been stopped from taking batteries on a plane? - daizaru, on 01/19/2008, -1/+15Even the 80's don't want that one back.
- robroydude, on 01/19/2008, -0/+13You "have" to take any extra battery's with you on carry on - you can't put them in checked baggage anymore is the rule
- SouthsideIrish, on 01/19/2008, -4/+16How many websites sell iPod battery replacements. Give it sometime and I bet there will be a lot of companies doing it with 1 day service, and giving you a warranty too.
- inactive, on 01/19/2008, -2/+13...install it yourself and instantly void your warranty...
- Ajenthavoc, on 01/19/2008, -3/+14If my only concern was a dying battery after a year of heavy use, I wouldn't mind the idea of having to take it to an apple store to replace it or just doing it on my free time. The issue is that I like to carry around a spare battery during travels or during long days at school. I don't want to spend 5 minutes with a screw driver replacing batteries in between lectures or while I'm in an airplane. It was very short sighted and, frankly, ignorant of them. I'm sure they could have found a way to make a replaceable battery from the get-go.
- nunofgs, on 01/19/2008, -1/+12And if there's no Apple Stores in your country?
- xtc46, on 01/19/2008, -1/+12Ill take manilla envelope over ron paul any day.
- gypsi, on 01/19/2008, -5/+16"to the max"? the 80s called, it wants its slang back
- Chompy, on 01/19/2008, -2/+11Ludicrous. Yes, because Apple doesn't sell another extremely popular product that also doesn't have a user-replaceable battery. The very idea is preposterous!
- Chompy, on 01/19/2008, -2/+11Spoken like someone who has flown across the US maybe once. Look, it's great that winds/weather/ATC favored you when your parents took you to Disneyland, but here in the real world you can very easily spend more than five hours on a plane in the United States. And I've got some more shocking news for you: you're not going to actually get five hours of normal use out of that laptop.
- neocitron, on 01/19/2008, -11/+20This is good to know. Hopefully Apple will now actually sell the battery seperately on the online store.
- Chompy, on 01/19/2008, -4/+13Heh, some of you guys are like battered housewives. "He didn't mean it this time. He swears it will never happen again!". Apple is trying to ***** you with a non user-replaceable battery. You can dance around it all you want, but there is no reasonable reason not to make it easily replaceable. Period.
- inactive, on 01/19/2008, -1/+10Um simple, voids warranty if you touch it. Voids warranty if you buy anything else and install it that isnt from Apple = voids warranty. OSX is DRM, cant install it on anything but an Apple.
Everything from Apple is = buy from me me me and only me !! - gypsi, on 01/19/2008, -1/+10welcome to the internet, enjoy your stay
- antoni, on 01/19/2008, -10/+19Don't say sorry, Apple should be sorry. *****.
- inactive, on 01/19/2008, -0/+8"you can't take extra batteries on airlines anymore"
Since WHEN???!!! I do it all the time!! - ryan83189, on 01/19/2008, -0/+8Up your nose with a rubber hose Mr. "I don't like dated slang insults" !
- vonskippy, on 01/19/2008, -8/+16Requires a screwdriver - that eliminates around 95% of all Mac users from doing this procedure.
- gypsi, on 01/19/2008, -2/+10apparently the time-space continuum that is the postal service has been circumvented
- fkr3, on 01/19/2008, -4/+12"most international flights have places you can plug your laptop in"
Yeah... business class and upwards. - Verdanic, on 01/19/2008, -0/+8I hate it when 'Sources:' is used. If I write 'Sources' in the footnotes on my next essay I think problems will arise.
- edwartica, on 01/19/2008, -0/+8Because then they wouldn't have the hippest new toy!
- inactive, on 01/19/2008, -2/+10The 90s called, they want their lame comeback back.
- CAPITALLETTERS, on 01/19/2008, -1/+9Why should i have to go to an apple store to do something as simple as replacing a laptop battery?
- inactive, on 01/19/2008, -3/+10"For the guy who is always traveling and wants something small and compact to take everywhere,"
That guy usually needs an
1-ethernet port
2-DVD player/burner
3- A replaceable battery
4- something road worthy (sturdy not fragile)
5-something compatible with people he's visiting with ( 90+ of the market uses what?!?! (not OSX !) )
Your argument now? - clark24, on 01/19/2008, -2/+9Remember the episode of Saved by the Bell where Zack and Slater went to The Max and gave each other handjobs under the table? Man that one was funny.
- xtc46, on 01/19/2008, -3/+10considering the tiny form facor, it probably would have been difficult. The problem they would have run into would be more along the lines of people damaging the components while swapping the battery. That and the size of the battery (it takes up almost the entire back half of the computer)
- troye, on 01/19/2008, -1/+8not everyone lives near an Apple store. I'm in Florida, and the nearest one is 300 miles away.
- solarwind24, on 01/19/2008, -8/+15I am so buying a macbook air now. Batty concern: check. No optical drive: Linux can be installed without one easily and I bet some intelligent people can hack the macbook air USB drive, so, check. One USB port, get a USB hub, costs only a few dollars: check. $2000: damn :(
- CheeseburgerBro, on 01/19/2008, -1/+8Well, mostly just the Jewish ones, and some of the more compulsive Protestants...
Oh wait. Cir-cum-VENT-ed.
Sorry. - aussieNickuss, on 01/19/2008, -1/+8We have sets of MacBooks at work (a school), and had 4 batteries die last year. We could replace the batteries ourselves, but the actual process of getting the new batteries under warranty took a hell of a lot longer than five days.
- KRNpro, on 01/19/2008, -4/+10"Tha...tha... thats my re... red.. .stapler....... im going to burn this place down."
- inactive, on 01/19/2008, -3/+9True but then that adds bulk to your "skinny" computer. So why not just get a slighly thicker laptop that has all those features and more for cheaper?!
- inactive, on 01/19/2008, -6/+12No, it still sucks even before you take the price into account.
