- ileftfark, on 01/04/2009, -2/+48A fixed internal battery? Why does Apple hate its customers?
- risenphoenixkai, on 01/05/2009, -4/+30These unibody MacBook Pros suck. Glossy screen only, that terrible chiclet keyboard, all ports crammed together on one side, no more included display connector, shorter battery life than the old model, and now you'll get to send the whole computer back to Apple if the battery goes *****-up.
I'm glad I bought the last-gen model. - llsethj, on 01/04/2009, -6/+20Are you ***** kidding me? They take Macrumors information then rehash it as their own. "We are able to independently confirm. Holy BS batman.
- nightsweat, on 01/05/2009, -0/+11I've been clamoring for an internal battery forever. Thank god they listened to me. Now for the rest of my wishlist
Cassette Tape support
Coin-operated internet access
Taser-keys
Increased DRM
30 amp plug only
half-sized keyboard with a double-sized tilde and Enter key
Come on Apple, listen to your customers like me! - Elranzer, on 01/05/2009, -0/+11"My PC used to cough and splutter every time I tried to attempt anything half decent."
Then you're doing something wrong. - Khast, on 01/05/2009, -0/+11Nothing really wrong with the computers themselves, but I do see one big problem...the fixed internal battery. I've repaired laptops for the last 10 years, and that is usually the first part to fail. Normally to buy a new battery is between $85 and $150....but to have to actually send it in to be replaced professionally??? (That is a pure recipe for them to rape your wallet) That is a poor design to begin with. I can see it in the Macbook Air due to the size and space available...but a full sized laptop, give me a break!
- inactive, on 01/05/2009, -0/+11These comments are fantastic.
- dext3r, on 01/05/2009, -1/+11I read in the comments for another article that it might be a fixed internal battery that allows you to swap external batteries without needing to power down. Just a thought, because a laptop with a fixed main battery would suck donkey balls.
- e2superman, on 01/05/2009, -2/+11"I am Apple.... you are getting sleeeeeeeeeeeepy..... you likey internal batteryy.... shipp to meez to replace (and charge you). Go forth Apple Minions and defend your Apple Product against naysayers of the mainstream PC laptops with replaceable batteries.... "
- canadaboy, on 01/05/2009, -1/+10Built in Obsolescence.
With my PCs, after the battery dies (happens in about 4 to 5 years on most laptops) I can replace the battery. What - you say it's too underpowered to do anything? Well, drop Ubuntu on it and give it to a child, non-profit, or other good cause.
Now Apple says "not only must you pay more, we are going to ensure built in obsolescence through a fixed battery. What! You say that isn't green! Of course it's green. We reduce the number of those harmful batteries to one per computer." - scootra, on 01/05/2009, -3/+11Apple would never do that. They would have to make it a tad thicker and it wouldn't look as nice with all the ports on the side of it. Remember, aesthetics always trump functionality when it comes to Apple.
- dandonia, on 01/05/2009, -0/+8This might just be the reason I go with the 15". I have been waiting for the 17" refresh for ages now and I will be pissed about this fixed battery issue if true.
- Elranzer, on 01/05/2009, -0/+8And only at 8x the price.
- masterkenobi, on 01/05/2009, -2/+9HDMI dominates over consumer electronics...HDTV's, Receivers, Bluray players, gaming consoles, etc etc etc. If you're saying that ALL of that should convert over to DisplayPort just because your Macbook Pro has it?
FAT ***** CHANCE. - CoreyTamas, on 01/05/2009, -0/+7Wait... are you telling me that if you spend thousands on a PC it will retain its value forever?
Cause if that's true... I concede 100%. - SniperGX1, on 01/05/2009, -5/+12Display Port is better than HDMI. TV's and Receivers should switch from HDMI to Display Port, not the other way around. Display Port is way more future proof than HDMI.
- wastern, on 01/05/2009, -3/+9chicklet keyboard is good, I like it better then the keyboard on my old MBP, wish I could justify the cost to upgrade
I do prefer the matte screen though. Although the glass screen means you can actually clean it. With the matte screen you can dust it, but god help you if some ass hole touches it or something gets on it
I'm guessing battery life will improve with Snow Leopard, as well as the ability to switch graphics cards on the fly when needed.
And the unibody MacBooks we've seen so far are MUCH better in terms of user serviceability. I looked into changing my hard drive, waaay too involved. Apple won't even do it, they refereed me to a 3rd party when I asked them. The new ones have everything there when you pop off the bottom, really easy access. A much cleaner design and a great step forward. Don't condemn an unreleased product based on rumors that don't make sense based on the rest of the product line. The Air is not in the same class as the 17", logic dictates that it would be in line with the current 15" - Elranzer, on 01/05/2009, -0/+6Apple = Form
Lenovo = Function - masterkenobi, on 01/05/2009, -0/+6Another thing to add....having a bluray optical drive + HDMI out = guess what? You have a portable bluray player you can hook up to any HDTV!
- Muler36, on 01/05/2009, -0/+6how the ***** are you getting dugged down?! everything you wrote here is completely true.
- wastern, on 01/05/2009, -0/+6who the hell buys a Mac a week before MacWorld? No one.
And if they did for some reason they do have a return policy. Return the thing and get the new one. Problem solved - rebotfc, on 01/05/2009, -2/+7They already did that.
- Herolint, on 01/05/2009, -1/+6I bought my 2006 MBP with the glossy screen and I really like it. It is much easier to clean than the matte screen and the colors look a little crisper; to me anyway.
- MrKiTT3N, on 01/05/2009, -1/+6Seriously.... macworld starts in hours. No patience?
- inactive, on 01/05/2009, -1/+6NO *****.
If this is true, we can only hope for sales so dismal that even the morons at Apple can't ignore the rebuke.
What's next? No FireWire? - inactive, on 01/05/2009, -1/+5A newer model of something doesn't make the previous version obsolete.
Also - if you do buy a mac you can be sure of a good resale value in a year or 2, unlike buying a PC. - masterkenobi, on 01/05/2009, -7/+11The Macbook Pro is getting a fixed battery? Wow....what they SHOULD add to the Macbook Pro:
Bluray optical drive
HDMI out
nVidia 9800M 512mb VRAM
more USB ports
memory card reader
2nd hard drive (not necessary, but nice to have for a RAID 0 or RAID 1 configuration) - 5hocker, on 01/04/2009, -5/+9I can independently confirm that AppleInsider is copying Macrumors posts
http://www.macrumors.com/2009/01/04/17-unibody-mac ... - inactive, on 01/05/2009, -0/+4Dammit. nVidia may have superior graphics, but Intel's core logic chipsets are far more reliable and less buggy than anyone else's. Too bad Apple didn't do what Lenovo does and use Intel core logic with an nVidia Quadro NVS card.
- drmsux, on 01/06/2009, -0/+4http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rationalization_(psyc ...
- rolf, on 01/05/2009, -0/+4Doesn't the 17" already have this? (I truly don't know).
My 3.5 year old 15" Powerbook (PPC) already had a 2-3 minute reserve battery for exactly what you are describing. - clyde2801, on 01/05/2009, -0/+4At least they're hopefully giving the Mini a reason to live. If they keep the same price points and give them the same internals as the macbook, there will be a reason to actually buy these damned things again.
- inactive, on 01/05/2009, -0/+4Sometimes I praise my employer, but I never praise them on an internet message site.
- inactive, on 01/05/2009, -0/+3Obsolescence isn't even the biggest issue. What about plain old functionality? What battery is going to last for a full coast-to-coast or international flight?
The sad part is that this rumor is actually believable, considering the monumental ignorance of Apple's design decisions on their portables. - ethana2, on 01/05/2009, -0/+3I'm hoping that battery we keep hearing about is a little reserve for hot swapping a real, full sized battery. That's really the only way that makes sense.
- vizeroth, on 01/06/2009, -0/+3Yeah, we all really want to pull 50GB down through our wireless connections rather than putting a disc in a drive.
- orb_nsc, on 01/05/2009, -0/+3You forgot sidecar expansions! It worked so well for the TI 99-4A and the PCjr, think what Apple could do with them!
- MattBD, on 01/05/2009, -0/+3How about support for Sega Genesis cartridges while they're at it?
- surfshaker, on 01/05/2009, -0/+3Please let them fix the screen hinge on those things so it does not flop closed under it's own weight when the display is not perpendicular to the earth. I took mine back and got a 15 inch because i like to watch "films" and browse in bed or the couch with the laptop propped on my knees or body and the screen fully open, and therefore a little bit off of vertical, causing the screen to flop closed. Checked a bunch of units in the store and all the 17s behaved that way.
I rigged up a rubber band thing to aide the screen to stay open, but finally traded it in for the 15 inch as it did not have this problem. - dandonia, on 01/05/2009, -0/+3"confirm that it will not share the same panel-covered battery layout as its 13- and 15-inch cousins!"
I think you misread the article. I am not saying the 15" won't go that way but probably not now. - wastern, on 01/05/2009, -0/+3I can't see that happening with all the battery trouble that has been seen recently. I'm on my 3rd battery for my MBP due to recalls and a power issue. not to mention it being a nice last resort to turn the thing off if there is an issue and holding down the power button doesn't work for whatever reason
- vawksel, on 01/06/2009, -0/+3Built in 9600 baud modem
68000 Processor for original Mac OS v1.0 software support (Software emulation just isn't good enough)
RCA UHF RF Channel 2 or 3 Modulator Video Connection (With Mono Sound) - lanismycousin, on 01/05/2009, -0/+2i wonder how much this replacement battery is going to be =)
- MtheoryX, on 01/05/2009, -1/+3Yeah, WTF already!
I'm already going to have to choose the MBP over the MB just to get FW, and now I can't even get that because of the ***** fixed batter.
Seriously, hackintosh, here I come. Apple, you had your chance and blew it.
Oh, and Steve Jobs doesn't HAVE cancer; he IS the cancer that is killing Apple.
/very disgruntled Mac user - rowlodge, on 01/05/2009, -0/+2must a custom built video card, most are twice as long as the mini.
- rmwimpee, on 01/04/2009, -5/+7Buried as rehashing Macrumors.com info
- Chirp08, on 01/05/2009, -0/+2You will never see Blu-ray in a mac, ever. They are pushing digital distribution via the iTunes store and iTV, and since they offer HD content already digitally including a blu-ray drive would be aiding the competition against themselves.
- masterkenobi, on 01/05/2009, -0/+2The 17" Macbook Pro is still sporting the 8600M. It's not asking a whole lot to upgrade that.
