- powlol, on 10/10/2007, -10/+79well then... there's no iphone for me in the foreseeable future
- HerrEisenheim, on 10/10/2007, -1/+19How about an IM client? Sure, Meebo is a pretty decent AJAX client, but it's lacking. No sound, for one. You've also got to deal with a limit on your screen real estate due to having to have the Safari navigation bar(s).
- Singee15, on 10/10/2007, -3/+21No Tap Tap Revolution, no deal
- deadbaby, on 10/10/2007, -3/+21I applaud you for making that choice BEFORE buying it instead of after you've already got it. I'm sick of everyone whining over something that Apple has been completely unambiguous about from day one. If you want native third party apps, don't buy an iPhone.
- fuzzmeister, on 10/10/2007, -1/+15If there were a special "Apps" menu on the home screen for 3rd party apps, and there was a way to let them access, say, the camera, I think that would be much better. Still, nothing compared to real programs.
- Shootfast, on 10/10/2007, -1/+15They haven't started selling them in other countries yet, and now that these annoyances are surfacing, more people will be put off.
- Terc, on 10/10/2007, -0/+11Looks like I'll be sticking with the 1.0.2 firmware for the foreseeable future... unless, of course, the 1.1.1 firmware is hacked to allow third party apps.
- MarkMS, on 10/10/2007, -0/+9/me looks at his iPhone.
/me sheds a tear. :'-(
Why Apple, why? Just give me an honest-to-goodness answer and I'll stop complaining. - ripple123, on 10/10/2007, -4/+13Thats no SDK, thats a insult.
- Oakes, on 10/10/2007, -11/+19Would somebody please explain why being closed is so much of a dealbreaker? Which app do you so desperately need on the iPhone? It's not a general purpose computer. I can't think of any missing functionality that I couldn't satisfy with a web app.
- dcmjzero, on 10/10/2007, -2/+10missing apps:
remote desktop or vnc client
ssh client
flash
java
... to name a few - MavRevMatt, on 10/10/2007, -4/+12They won't do anything because fanboys like you will buy them no matter how *****.
- starkruzr, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7AJAX gives you no access to the hardware. No vibrate. No CoreGraphics, CoreAudio, CoreAnimation. Games of any real value. Network applications of any real value. Local file storage.
Your definitions are arbitrary. My jailbroken, 1.0.2 iPhone IS a general-purpose computer. - deadbaby, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7There are some handy apps (iFlickr, for instance) but yeah... they're really not a big loss to me. For anything more complex than checking my e-mail, listening to music or making a phone call I prefer to use a real computer.
- jsully, on 10/10/2007, -1/+7Lack of 3G maybe, but other than that I can't think of much.
- Identity4, on 10/10/2007, -1/+7Apple: "Web based blah blah brick blah"
WHHHYYYY????? :( - stinkypyper, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5At least support java -- not in the browser -- for ***** sakes! This sucks nuts. I love apple, but they pull a stupid stunt like this and piss me off.
"How we do it is important; that we all agree and do it the same way is what makes it beautiful" - Chris Pyper (Me) 2007 - beatomatic, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5The NES emulator! Most of the other 3rd party apps are junk, but it's nice to be able to play a little Mike Tyson's Punch out when I need to kill a little time.
- Yarnage, on 10/10/2007, -2/+7I would LOVE to know how a shortcut to a web page is all of a sudden _that_ much closer to a native application.
- kertong, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5Not to mention you can'tn background it to leave yourself online.
I have yet to come across a mobile IM client that lets you easily remain online without dropping messages, getting disconnected, or eating up all your battery in a matter of hours - except for the danger sidekick. If a cell phone is to be a true "communicator" in terms of voice and messaging, a lot of these companies need to take a lesson from danger's sidekick. I'm sure anybody who's owned a sidekick, then tried to do IM on another phone understands exactly what I mean. - sexycommando, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4SKYPE
- calgone, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5You'll crash AT&T for pete's sake!!!!!

i am a die-hard Apple Fan who used to live in California but now live in the UK. When the iphone came out I was about ready to buy a flight to NYC on a cheap airline, get the phone and unlock it but now that I have had a chance to see what they intend to release here in Europe and the heavy haded tactics they have been taking lately I have absolutely no desire to own the iPhone in it's current form. Maybe if they open it up to a full sdk , add 3g, and convince the carriers to have NORMAL rate plans and not hyper-inflated ones then I will take a look at it again... Sad really - sirbeta, on 10/10/2007, -3/+7Considering the price point, someone might see the iPhone as more of an investment akin to a smartphone. With all the bells and whistles one might expect to have available on a PDA. One of these bells and whistles is the ability to run third party and quite possibly some software specific to your company. Being locked just basically affirms that you can't have it your way. (cue burger king commercial theme)
- SlvrEagle23, on 10/10/2007, -2/+5"Our products are gaining popularity with trendy 20-somethings with expendable income...but at the same time, it's these same 20-somethings who grew up hacking their school computers to play music with BASIC! How are we supposed to become a dominant force of growing corporate censorship, control and evil while still appealing to a crowd that hates dominant forces of corporate censorship, control and evil? How on earth can we have our cake and eat it too?
...wait...I've got it! We'll give them JavaScript and brick their phones if they ask for better! Damn, I'm good!" - TejInLA, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4I disagree.
3rd party apps fill the gap. People can customize to their own likings. I really hate the lack of customizability on the iphone and not being able to create my own ringtones (not from songs, so I simply can't get them in any fashion).
Mind you, I do still like and use the phone. I'm just thinking about downgrading the firmware until apple releases something actually useable. (Didn't upgrade-- just got phone) - Glugory, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4@Oakes
That's not the point. ALL web apps are disabled if you don't have a net connection. ALL. That is utter horse *****. Even Windows Mobile allows 3rd party apps. Microsoft is less douche baggy in this area than Apple. Are you really still trying to defend them? - Glugory, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3You're an idiot if you really think that.
- dvandewalle, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3eeez, when are people going to realize that apps are coming, but maybe Apple is trying to work up to that, and make sure when they finally do open all of the floodgates they are ready for it. everybody starts complaining right off the bat, and doesn't remember that this is still relatively new territory for Apple, and they might want to walk before they run.
- Shootfast, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3*an
- ProvocateurCrow, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4Is this an article or product placement
- EmileVictor, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2I may be wrong, but if these are web based doesn't that mean that AT&T can charge you for using them? You still need to download them every time they're run. I find that disgusting.
Coupled with the fact that there are significant speed gains as well as expandability options attributed to 3rd party applications running straight from the phone. - turpenine, on 10/10/2007, -2/+4the rate plans here are $10 more than the comparable voice plans. The $10 covers the unlimited data and small text package. I guess you guys got boned... again.
- mrsteveman1, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3Or the fact that all applications are restricted to when you have an internet connection......
Hence when you have edge turned off, no apps work. - Refrag, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2No voice activated dialing. Hopefully that gets added in the next update. I'd also like to have caller announcements over wired or wireless headsets.
- spargett, on 10/10/2007, -3/+5*****, this.
*shakes head* - spargett, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3"pretty darn close to native"
- SlvrEagle23, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Here's the one reason the iPhone being a closed device is a dealbreaker for me: ActiveSync.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2The iPhone -IS- a general purpose computer. It's just that currently, it's like the PC's installed in a kiosk at the mall.
- CrackaTX, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2And I will be using firmware v1.0.2 for the foreseeable future.
- enzomedici, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Stop bitching about 3G already. *****' aaa, the iPhone has WiFI which blows 3G out of the water. 3G is already lame. My Verizon RAZR had 3G...big whoopity *****. It took forever just to load a text screen of a few bytes.
- TejInLA, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1All of the iphone plans are unlimited data, so AT&T won't charge for them. Unless they somehow convert them to text messages.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Most of you guys act like a bunch of 12 year olds. You just can't see the big picture, can you? Apple has an SDK, but they're only releasing it to companies that have apps they want on the iPhone. You might not have noticed, but Apple already has third party software on the iPhone: Google Maps and YouTube. By managing the development for the iPhone, Apple can ensure that only secure, quality apps run on the iPhone, thereby protecting the user experience. Future apps will also be released on iTunes, the same way Apple does with games on the iPod. That way, they can get a commission on every app for hosting it, which in turn, will secure iTune's popularity in the download market.
Apple does not support third party hacks because most of them exploit holes in the firmware. If they decided to support hacks now, they would have to support them forever and that would slow legitamate app development, without the added benefit of getting paid to do it. Think about Apple's stance from a business viewpoint before you try to condemn them. - sholt, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Well, they may be open to speculation about the exact timeline if Apple decides to do it, but the timeline is a moot point until apple announces they intend to do it.
The problem is that you cannot take the assumption that Apple will support native 3rd party apps as fact. - Oakes, on 10/10/2007, -2/+3Wow, so all the commotion is over geeky utilities that 99% of the population doesn't care about? Regarding flash and java, these would not be possible even if they opened up an API for developing iPhone apps. They are low-level runtimes.
- peterinjapan, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I love my apps, and don't want them taken away. But I also **LOVE** SummerBoard, having those themes, having the ability to scroll up and down like the iPhone should be able to do, being able to easily change my icons and background. I am *SO* bummed about these developments and don't plan on giving Apple *any* money for any reason until I feel satisfied on this. Seriously, can't they see how much Sony's bad handling of the PSP hacking killed all interest in that platform?
- bkemper, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2That's exactly why it isn't open. Do you really think that AT&T didn't think of VOIP when they were making out their contracts with Apple?
- znicket, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1In both the US and Europe the phones come with unlimited data plan. That means no extra cost to connect to open the programs. It may mean you need a little bit more time to open each program but they are secure and you can choose from thousands.
- Samji, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I'm going for the Neonode N2. If I get a fancy phone.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1If you didn't try to unlock the phone, you don't need to do anything other than hold down option and select restore in itunes. I kept 1.0.2 on there until it was confirmed that it could be reversed. 1.1.1 doesn't have much interesting in it. Safari seems more stable, but it's not worth losing everything else.
