- BrendanSheehan, on 01/10/2009, -2/+30There's only one reason Apple would want to attend CES next year: they must have a big consumer product in the works that will be ready by around then. All signs would point to this if they are going to attend CES. Probably either iTunes enabled networked TV's, or a "revolutionary" consumer tablet device. They won't go to CES and demo iLife '10 that's for sure.

- mrfreeziexp, on 01/10/2009, -1/+15But I thought the reason they quit doing MacWorld was because they thought trade shows were no longer needed... I'm confused.
- goleopards1, on 01/10/2009, -1/+15the ole switch-a-roo
- renemartini, on 01/10/2009, -0/+9I used to work in trade shows. Honestly the organizers in those events would suck you so dry that you can breath out vapor. I am not surprised many companies are just doing their own events using their own resources since many trades require you to use their people, their materials and their food ($10 per quesadilla).
- insidius, on 01/10/2009, -0/+8Nobody cares what you would or would not welcome.
I would be happy if we could go a year without having to read another one of your terrible comments. - dfsjdkflasjk, on 01/10/2009, -2/+10From the bottom of my heart, thank you so much for posting "-jcr". I had no idea as to how I would distinguish who wrote that comment without three letters.
- Pliep, on 01/10/2009, -4/+9STOP the Apple rumors. Buried inaccurate.
- kinseyincanada, on 01/10/2009, -3/+8didnt hey drop Mac World because they didnt like trade shows?
- ChunkerMunker, on 01/10/2009, -0/+3Exactly.
They're not gonna attend unless they have something that'll blow everything else out.
I don't think its gonna be an Imac upgrade, a new Apple Tv.
They're planning something very, very big.
Of course.... if this thing is true.
And as far as the CES being dead?
Well, if the rumor is true..... not any more. - MtheoryX, on 01/10/2009, -0/+3I wish I could go a year without hearing you bitch about Apple stories.
Oh, I know...block the apple category and STFU. - KibibyteBrain, on 01/10/2009, -1/+4Well, Apple has been distancing itself from specializing in primary support for Pro Apps to a new direction in consumer apps. This is probably why they no longer felt NAB was worth it. And Macworld no longer makes sense because now Apple is becoming a mainstream company in the tech industry and so having its own "ecosystem" is not very valuable to distinguish it. In fact, the idea of a separate Mac ecosystem is probably now hurting Apple more than its helping it. They want to play nice with HP printers and Canon cameras and CES is a good place to make that clear.
- MtheoryX, on 01/10/2009, -0/+2They dropped Mac World because they no longer need a big circle jerk of existing mac users...they need fresh blood from a market that is predominantly non-mac users.
- MtheoryX, on 01/10/2009, -0/+2They don't necessarily even need a new "big consumer product."
I suspect that as the brand goes more mainstream, they want to get out from under the previous stigma of a closed ecosystem. Having a tradeshow called "macworld" doesn't help apple attract new non-mac users; it's basically just a circle jerk for existing users.
They could just as well take all their existing products and services and attend CES to appeal to a much larger consumer audience.
That said, ti would be exciting to some other new "big thing"...but i doubt anything as big as the iPhone was will come for a few years yet. - MtheoryX, on 01/10/2009, -0/+2Dude, didn't you hear?
Steve Jobs died during the Mac World keynote. So tragic. - kelchm, on 01/10/2009, -1/+3I'm going to go ahead and say there is no way in hell this is going to happen.
- blankoboy, on 01/10/2009, -1/+3And all the Apple gossip sites (macdailynews, appleinsider, macrumors, etc) will be wrong about everything that will be announced next year yet again.
/still extremely pissed about all the hoopla gossip swearing a new Mac Mini would be announced and then nothing...urgh! - karolisonline, on 01/10/2009, -0/+1Isn't CES microsoft territory? I mean Microsoft is like the boss in that trade show? it would be like microsoft going to macworld to announce... oh wait that has happened one time.. remember those old times than they introduced IE for mac.. little bastards..
- slezzzter, on 01/10/2009, -1/+2I put up with it for a while... but now... blocked.
- IllBeBack, on 01/10/2009, -2/+3-jdouchecr
- TheCash, on 01/10/2009, -0/+1Thats a damn good idea... thats where everyone else in the tech industry will be, and it's stupid to split up the reporters and tech professionals between the two expo's.
- BZKyle, on 01/10/2009, -1/+2Wishing death on someone over OS wars?
Thats real low... - satcomer, on 01/10/2009, -0/+1That is bigger reason then all the stupid tech pundits are saying. Why is no tech pundit talking about this?
- MtheoryX, on 01/10/2009, -0/+1Tech pundits never think about finances and economics.
That's why they're shocked that there are still people out there with only one basic non-smart cell phone, dial up internet, and non-networked homes and entertainment centers. - Timbertron3000, on 01/10/2009, -0/+1what? Pam's dead?
- seanthebond, on 01/10/2009, -0/+1..This is a news site.. If you don't care about news, then don't type "www.digg.com" into your web browser, or don't look at the tech stuff.
- forbetaorworse, on 01/10/2009, -0/+1This would be awesome. Watching CES coverage this year I noticed that people seem to be comparing a lot of the new gadgets to things apple has already released. Whether they are better or not, they are as innovative as the rest of these companies and should start to join the club instead of diving deeper into the credibility killer that we call the "cult of mac"
- anshuman, on 01/10/2009, -1/+1well... this can be summed up in "Wishful thinking" .
- pulpjedi, on 01/10/2009, -2/+2BURIED. Anyone speculating on what Apple will do A YEAR FROM NOW needs to be slapped. Obviously somebody is trying to generate traffic, which is why I refuse to click through to the story. Besides... leaving MacWorld for CES would be adding insult to injury.
- MarkyBear, on 01/10/2009, -1/+1I think this is probably a smart move on their part. Now if they could just move CES to San Francisco... ;-)
- Branchex, on 01/10/2009, -4/+3Cnet on why this is not gonna happen: http://news.cnet.com/8301-13579_3-10138499-37.html
- inactive, on 01/10/2009, -5/+4even Apple are are sick of their over the top (retarded) fanbois
- NSResponder, on 01/10/2009, -4/+3San Francisco can't host a convention that big. Vegas and Chicago are pretty much the only choices.
-jcr - kinseyincanada, on 01/10/2009, -5/+3-sockpuppets
- NSResponder, on 01/10/2009, -5/+2They dropped Mac World for a couple of reasons. The main one is that it's not worth what it costs.
-jcr - DarkerMaster, on 01/10/2009, -5/+2That is of course if Jobs is still alive...
BWAH HA HA HA HAAAAAAA!!! - OmEgA286, on 01/10/2009, -8/+3ok.... i can die happy knowing this now.
/SARCASM - NSResponder, on 01/10/2009, -6/+1It doesn't have anything to do with distancing themselves from Pro Apps. That's a key market for Apple. They're not only investing in ProApps development, they're building a whole new underlying media layer around CoreVideo and QTKit to address the shortcomings of the legacy code in QuickTime.
-jcr - NSResponder, on 01/10/2009, -12/+1Dude, I don't know or care why it bugs you when I sign my posts, but get over yourself. It's four characters: go cope.
-jcr - inactive, on 01/10/2009, -14/+2Yay! More shiny, overpriced, underpowered gadgets in 2010 from Apple. I can't friggin' wait. How cool would it be if we could go from now until CES next year without hearing anything about Apple, Steve Jobs, etc? I, for one, would welcome that.
- NSResponder, on 01/10/2009, -19/+4Apple can get far more attention than the entire CES just by sending out invitations to a press event at the Apple campus. They can do that without spending seven figures on attending CES.
-jcr - NSResponder, on 01/10/2009, -20/+5Yeah, right.
Apple dropped MWSF, just like they dropped NAB and the rest of the trade shows they used to attend, because trade shows aren't cost-effective. This is just as true of CES as it is of any other show.
