http://www.ilounge.com/index.php/ipod/review/sega- ... - powerbook86, on 12/19/2007, -1/+26Direct link to the YouTube video of the game in action: http://youtube.com/watch?v=8xLFDgq9sP0
The game runs fine, just lags a tiny bit when music changes. The game also is rather large at 62 MB. But the controls aren't too bad, still an iPod game pad would rock.- PicklePower, on 12/19/2007, -0/+1462 MB?! If I remember right a Sonic 1 Genesis ROM was less that 5 MB. What in the world would make it so big?
- Shorties, on 12/19/2007, -0/+8the game isnt a rom its refitted to run on the iPod
- mmockett, on 12/19/2007, -1/+16They used bitmaps instead of Jpegs! Silly billys!
- TylerL82, on 12/19/2007, -1/+8It looks like the music was redone in a non-MIDIesque format, based on the pauses in the YouTube video above.
- Shorties, on 12/19/2007, -1/+3I don't know why everyone is digging you down I think your right, the iPod probably doesn't support Midi, so they just used prerecorded music instead.
- Cyber_Akuma, on 12/19/2007, -0/+1That would explain the two pauses I saw, when Sonic gets the invincibility and when he clears the level, both of which would trigger a music change.
Since the gameplay video was soundless I didn't realize it.
- schoate09, on 12/19/2007, -2/+1The fact that it's recompiled to run on the iPod's much more advanced hardware and software configuration.
- polywaffle, on 12/19/2007, -0/+1so much more advanced that its 62mb? You gotta be ***** me. Its likely the music as mentioned above or just lazy programming.
- appleseed1234, on 12/19/2007, -0/+1It's the music, I went through the game files myself to see what was the deal is, and nearly every piece of music is around 5 MB in mp4 format looping for about 10 minutes. It seems like they had some issues implementing MIDI, or the unfortunate but more likely explanation is, like most recent Sonic games, they just rushed it.
Anyways, I'd love to see if the music could be replaced, maybe with some Sonic and Knuckles tunes :)- Cyber_Akuma, on 12/19/2007, -0/+1Wait a minute, looping for about 10 minutes?
Why would it need to be that long? I am pretty sure most to all the Sonic music was much shorter than that, coulden't they have just made the MP4 do through one iteration then looped that? Sounds like a waste of space to me...
.... unless they were too lazy to code it to loop since IIRC if you hit 10 minutes on a level you died from time over, its been a while since I played the game...- Shorties, on 12/22/2007, -0/+1every time a new song plays the iPod pauses for a sec, I bet that was to avoid the pauses.
- Cyber_Akuma, on 12/19/2007, -0/+1Wait a minute, looping for about 10 minutes?
- Cyber_Akuma, on 12/19/2007, -0/+1While it is a cool thing to see the flagship Sega Gensis title oficially ported to the iPod, those controls look terrible from what I saw in the two videos.
Granted, the way the iPod's controls are designed is not something that makes most videogames that require constant directional input as well as a button easy, but using a button on the center of the "dpad" as well having to choose between touching or clicking a directional button to perform different things, its just a mess.
I noticed in the gameplay video he had trouble switching directions or had a delayed reaction from stopping from going in a certain direction (he kept pushing against walls and overshooting targets).
- PicklePower, on 12/19/2007, -0/+1462 MB?! If I remember right a Sonic 1 Genesis ROM was less that 5 MB. What in the world would make it so big?
- SmackMyMac, on 12/19/2007, -8/+4Hell, I'd buy it just to listen to the game music.
- MillionsLivio, on 12/19/2007, -1/+1Download the songs off a fan website, convert to .mp3, done.
- MrM1yagi, on 12/19/2007, -2/+24Hold A, Up, Down, Left, Right *chime*
Ahh I miss the good old days.- whiskeyclone, on 12/19/2007, -0/+2Actually it was Up, Down, Left, Right A+Start
also Up,C,Down,C,Left,C,Right,C A+C+Start was debug mode which was awesome fun.- Tycal, on 12/22/2007, -0/+2True nostalgia

- sv650touring, on 12/19/2007, -0/+2I believe I just goatsed. I can send you some pics of that if you'd like.
- Cyber_Akuma, on 12/19/2007, -0/+2Wrong game, she appears in Sonic ADVANCE 2
- TheSnuffster, on 12/19/2007, -1/+2pics or it didnt happen
- Spamcan, on 12/19/2007, -3/+12Nice one SEGA! $5 well spent for anybody with an iPod and I hope Sonic 2 is going to follow soon.
- alefox, on 12/19/2007, -0/+6sonic 2 > sonic 1
- nullx42, on 12/19/2007, -0/+6sonic 2 > sonic 3
Sonic 2 + Sonic and knuckles > Any game of its kind.- Gir53457, on 12/19/2007, -1/+2Wrong! Sonic 3 + Sonic & Knuckles.
- nullx42, on 12/19/2007, -0/+6sonic 2 > sonic 3
- alefox, on 12/19/2007, -0/+6sonic 2 > sonic 1
- Kaehyu, on 12/19/2007, -8/+3Does it use the click wheel? It'd be great if it used the click wheel.
Just imagine, going through Green Hill Zone making Sonic spin by spinning the wheel.- lazersailer, on 12/19/2007, -0/+20as apposed to what? The iPod only has the click wheel.
- facelogic, on 12/19/2007, -0/+11No, it uses the big control pad on the back of an ipod.
/s
Kidding aside, I agree...that would be nice. I'm going to get it and check it out! - djsim, on 12/19/2007, -0/+1No, it uses the wheel's buttons, although you can touch certain points on the wheel to do alternate actions such as looking up. There are two different configurations depending on how many hands you want to play with.
- zongamin, on 12/19/2007, -0/+4it uses mind control. no good for you as you don't have one.
- AsSubtleAsABrik, on 12/19/2007, -2/+5sonic, he's the fastest thing alive..
wasn't that in the intro to the saturday morning cartoon? i can still hear the tune in my head.- FatherG, on 12/19/2007, -0/+2One of them. There were two sonic cartoons: one was a bit more goofy and had two "evil" robot animals working for Robotnik (Grounder was one, can't remember the chicken bots name). The other version, the one you're thinking off, had more of a post-apocalyptic and 'serious' feel to it.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PD2iEx3iV8I- sonicjosh, on 12/19/2007, -0/+1Scratch and Grounder were the names.
The goofy one was 'Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog', and the other, more serious one was just called 'Sonic the Hedgehog'
- sonicjosh, on 12/19/2007, -0/+1Scratch and Grounder were the names.
- chugger1992, on 12/19/2007, -0/+2in addition to FatherG's comment, here is the other show's intro.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HCcYBQ_f90Q- nullx42, on 12/19/2007, -0/+1This ones way better than that other stupid "DUUR SONIC IS COOL SO STAY IN SCHOOL" *****.
- Gir53457, on 12/19/2007, -1/+1umm...
- nullx42, on 12/19/2007, -0/+1This ones way better than that other stupid "DUUR SONIC IS COOL SO STAY IN SCHOOL" *****.
- ogore, on 12/19/2007, -0/+1.There's also the more recent sonic X which was also pretty serious but when translated to English lots of parts got censored
Heres the intro
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iBp8zYi0moU
I think it's the same universe as the sonic adventure games on Sega and Gamecube
- FatherG, on 12/19/2007, -0/+2One of them. There were two sonic cartoons: one was a bit more goofy and had two "evil" robot animals working for Robotnik (Grounder was one, can't remember the chicken bots name). The other version, the one you're thinking off, had more of a post-apocalyptic and 'serious' feel to it.
- goingtoalpha, on 12/19/2007, -2/+12Can you charge up his spin using the scroll-wheel? That would be badass.
- Cyber_Akuma, on 12/19/2007, -0/+2You coulden't do that in the original Sonic 1, spin-charging appeared in Sonic 2
- ItsMyWii, on 12/19/2007, -5/+2Do want!
- dawnraid101, on 12/19/2007, -7/+1has this arhh how should i say it, cracked yet?
- JudgeMonkey, on 12/19/2007, -3/+2No, it hasn't cracked. How could it crack? If you mean has it been cracked then spend 5 bucks and while you are at it go stab yourself in the penis.
- ShinRaTDR, on 12/19/2007, -0/+1The firmware was cracked to allow playing iPod games a while ago, and it applies to all future games too.
- mmockett, on 12/19/2007, -5/+6Amazing.
I can't wait for Doom to come out on it...
Oh wait...
It did...
ages ago...
for free...
so nip that one in the bud.- spargett, on 12/19/2007, -0/+3Did they ever get the controls working on it?
- Gir53457, on 12/19/2007, -2/+1Nope, but still feel free to act like a pompous *****.
- spargett, on 12/22/2007, -0/+2Wtf are you talking about? It was a simple question.
- Gir53457, on 12/19/2007, -2/+1Nope, but still feel free to act like a pompous *****.
- Cyber_Akuma, on 12/19/2007, -0/+1In gaming terms, the touch-wheel is practically the equivelent of having a single thumbpad from a PS2/PS3/Xbox360 controller, except digital and in 4 directions.
How prey tell would you control doom with 4 directions and a single button in the MIDDLE of the equivelent of the dpad? Even the Atari2600 controller was better, at least that was 8 directions and the button was seperate from the directional controls.
- spargett, on 12/19/2007, -0/+3Did they ever get the controls working on it?
- cadethansen, on 12/19/2007, -7/+1Hey timusco. I see that you got one on the board! I love to geocache.keep digging.
- manmetropolis, on 12/19/2007, -5/+1Sega Genesis Meets Ipod
- matu4251, on 12/19/2007, -1/+2this looks more like the megadrive version
- matu4251, on 12/19/2007, -0/+2my bad.. I grew up in europe where genesis had a different name :) (got confused with the "master system")
- djsim, on 12/19/2007, -0/+4Now the iPod does what Nintendon't?
SEGA!- Cyber_Akuma, on 12/19/2007, -0/+1You mean like play MP3s? (Photo Channel 1.1)
- polywaffle, on 12/19/2007, -0/+1I really wish they'd port the genesis one instead.
- matu4251, on 12/19/2007, -1/+2this looks more like the megadrive version
- TheRealJMX, on 12/19/2007, -10/+4Big deal. I had this exact game on my cell phone almost a year ago.
- Disease, on 12/19/2007, -1/+6Your e-peen must be huge.
- SonicAD, on 12/19/2007, -0/+4Well I have it on my Genesis, Saturn, Gamecube, PS2, Wii, emulators on the Dreamcast and my PC, and soon enough Sega will probably put it out for the toaster oven. And I'll probably buy that too.
- Cyber_Akuma, on 12/19/2007, -0/+1Sonic 1 has been ported IIRC to the Sega Saturn, Gamecube, Wii, Xbox, PS2, Xbox360, GameBoy Advance, and I think the PS3 as well.
Its starting to become ported to almost as many systems as Street Fighter II...- sv650touring, on 12/19/2007, -0/+1...says Akuma to Sonic
- Cyber_Akuma, on 12/19/2007, -0/+1Sonic 1 has been ported IIRC to the Sega Saturn, Gamecube, Wii, Xbox, PS2, Xbox360, GameBoy Advance, and I think the PS3 as well.
- IndiShukla, on 12/19/2007, -8/+2so they make this instead of coming out with the dreamcast 2?
- SigmaDraconis, on 12/19/2007, -1/+2I honestly wouldn't want present-day Sega handling any Dreamcast, much less a Dreamcast 2.
- darkNiGHTS, on 12/19/2007, -0/+1When SEGA stopped producing the Dreamcast a little bit of them died inside.... especially Sonic Team.
- sv650touring, on 12/19/2007, -0/+1Yeah, Sega had a few development teams which *individually* would be considered world-class. These day's it's like they're just trying to be "good enough", but in their console days, they had more of a purpose.
- darkNiGHTS, on 12/19/2007, -0/+1When SEGA stopped producing the Dreamcast a little bit of them died inside.... especially Sonic Team.
- cheeseron, on 12/19/2007, -1/+1this would make more money
- SigmaDraconis, on 12/19/2007, -1/+2I honestly wouldn't want present-day Sega handling any Dreamcast, much less a Dreamcast 2.
- SigmaDraconis, on 12/19/2007, -2/+3Spring Yard Zone's theme is as infectiously catchy as ever.
- MikeonTV, on 12/19/2007, -7/+2is someone going to point me to where I can find this for free or do I have to search it myself?
- ronaldmonster, on 12/19/2007, -1/+1Digg may love homebrew but we're not about to help you pirate.
- MacParrot, on 12/19/2007, -1/+1I think it's http://www.apple.com/uracheapass
- dremspider, on 12/19/2007, -2/+6hmmm.. the ipod must not have blast processing... it seems laggy.
- neiltc13, on 12/19/2007, -4/+4Controls on this look AWFUL.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6fhKn9jRhrI- vade79, on 12/19/2007, -0/+1Feels fine, surprisingly...mainly cause there is only one action button(jump).
- Karmavs, on 12/19/2007, -0/+1The controls are fine -- he's using the bad scheme. Control scheme b is far better - The left and right, when clicked, jump too - and run when touched
- Takuro, on 12/19/2007, -2/+3When I heard "Sonic Game," I pictured some lame half-butted effort at making a fairly simple game that would hope to attract potential buyers under the iconic Sonic character.
But this is the full-blown original Sonic game that used to be on the Gensis? Awesomenesssss! I know there have been hacks to get roms running on iPods before, but it's nice to see some official old school games offered directly from Apple that don't require you to sacrifice the beautiful iPod GUI.
Now where's some Mario? - Maloney, on 12/19/2007, -8/+1where can i get this for not $5
- alefox, on 12/19/2007, -0/+8wii vc (it's $8 there)
- trendsettr, on 12/19/2007, -1/+2You can get rockbox and iboy and install a gameboy version on sonic the hedgehog... for free.
- wildcelt, on 12/19/2007, -0/+1Santa
- Cyber_Akuma, on 12/19/2007, -0/+1Wii VC, XBLA, Sonic Jam for the Saturn, the GBA port, or the Sonic/genesis Collections for GameCube/PS2/Xbox.
All of which will cost more than $5- smergs, on 12/19/2007, -0/+1Actually, the 400 points it cost on XBLA = $5.
- vade79, on 12/19/2007, -2/+1Fun game as always...but I'm confused how an old genesis game became 63meg. :/
- FatherG, on 12/19/2007, -1/+2The sound effects/music maybe? Can an ipod (any ipod) play midi?
- schoate09, on 12/19/2007, -4/+1Recompiled to run natively on a much more intricate control scheme which runs on a much more advanced hardware configuration, that runs a much more advanced software configuration.
- Cyber_Akuma, on 12/19/2007, -1/+2Please don't post if you have no idea how the product in question works, or computer code in general.
- Karmavs, on 12/19/2007, -1/+4It doesn't have hardware to play midi-style music. The music is in AAC format.
- BlaenkDenum, on 12/19/2007, -2/+1Seems pretty cool, but I've experienced that the games drain the iPod's battery like a bum on a sandwich.
- sdschramm, on 12/19/2007, -2/+2darn, I thought this was an "installer.app" game for the iPhone/iPod Touch!
Ahh....won't be long 'till someone makes a rip off version for the iPhone. - biggestsonicfan, on 12/19/2007, -2/+2Nice to see a portable version of the game that isn't the horrific Gameboy Advance port
- brian1127, on 12/19/2007, -2/+1They're even trying to promote their Sonic Mobile by giving away a Wii console and some Wii games:
http://tapatap.com/tapatap-userweb2/contest/showus ... - elcaminos, on 12/19/2007, -2/+4
When the hell is the Iphone going to get some goddamn games??- stalky14, on 12/19/2007, -1/+4When you install the GBA emulator on it.
- Cyber_Akuma, on 12/19/2007, -0/+1Actually, this would be a Genesis emulator, unless for some reason you would want to run the GBA port. (and I was not referring to Sonic Advance)
- modena, on 12/20/2007, -0/+1As far as old games like Sonic which were created for a controller with a decent number of buttons I think the IPhone would be even worse that using the click wheel. Anyone who tried playing something with the GB emulator on the IPhone knows how frustrating it is not to have any physical buttons.
Now if by games you mean new games which have controls that work with the IPhone (such as Labyrinth or Crayon Physics) then yes, I agree. The GB emulator was a nice tech demo though.
- stalky14, on 12/19/2007, -1/+4When you install the GBA emulator on it.
- FinalDragoon06, on 12/19/2007, -2/+2When did the iPod get Blast Processing?!
It doesn't look too bad, seems to be running smoothly. Hopefully it is a better port than the Cell phone and GBA versions. - Flashman, on 12/19/2007, -4/+1That's so cool. I wish Apple would open the iPod up so the community could port more of these games.
- FHKE, on 12/19/2007, -3/+1For older iPod such as iPod photo and 1st gen. nano you can installed iPodLinux and put a GameGear emulators to run you favorite Sonic games! (works on 5th Gen iPod too)
http://ipodlinux.org/IGameGear - deadnoob, on 12/19/2007, -2/+1i never thought id say this, but the ipod games from the itunes store are actually getting pretty good. between phase (aka ipod hero) and sonic, they are actually getting some pretty cool games aside from the basics.
- supaflystud, on 12/19/2007, -5/+1This is a port of the exact same Sonic 1 from the Sega Game Gear...
....don't believe me? check the link>>>
http://youtube.com/watch?v=44M1rELUGq0- simonwright, on 12/19/2007, -0/+1Actually, it's a port of the Genesis/Mega Drive version. The Game Gear version was itself a modified port of the Master System release.
- Sharky35, on 12/19/2007, -2/+1The game is probably smaller than a single MP3?
- Karmavs, on 12/19/2007, -0/+1No - its way more than one MP3
- Cyber_Akuma, on 12/19/2007, -0/+1The game uses MP4 format audio for it's music, so its much larger, around 63 megs I believe...
- mosxs, on 12/19/2007, -3/+0Nice to see Apple is still shafting those of us who bought iPod games prior to the launch of the new iPods by not allowing us to use them or upgrade to the new point revisions so we can use them on our new iPods.
- DRFU, on 12/19/2007, -1/+1Does that mean you can listen to the entire Sonic 1 soundtrack on your iPod?
- BambinosKrib, on 12/19/2007, -1/+1Prays for an updated version of picodrive for the s60v3 platform for my future n82.
Sonic = my childhood memories. - psylent, on 12/19/2007, -3/+1***** Sonic. I just noticed Peggle is available for purchase!
- Cyber_Akuma, on 12/19/2007, -1/+1So, what was added?
I noticed two differences in the youtube video.
1. Instead of taking the easy way out of just having the main menu overlay over the Sonic logo they actually made the logo flip up then back down over the appearing menu.
2. The game seems to have loaded the first level, but then the player seemed to skip something and the game re-loaded the level for real, seems like it was a cutscene that the player skipped.
If these are new I am sure other extras must have been added as well.- powerbook86, on 02/11/2008, -0/+1The game did not re-load the level. Since the game was starting off as a new player it went into a tutorial of the game, showing you the first stage and showing you how to use the controls. I skipped through this on the video since I didn't think it was too important.
- theclaw1, on 12/19/2007, -1/+1The original Genesis/Megadrive version of Sonic the Hedgehog is in fact the most widely direct-ported or *legally* emulated game of all time.
While most people assume it would be Tetris, that isn't true. Just about every edition of Tetris until 1996 or so had different graphics, sounds, and gameplay mechanies. Even publisher and/or developer at times.- Cyber_Akuma, on 12/19/2007, -0/+1What about Street Fighter II?
- WaRdRivR, on 12/19/2007, -1/+1yes! something the 'touch' generation ipods don't have! this makes me happy!
- nkthen, on 02/27/2008, -0/+1I love this game...
http://www.nkthen.com
http://www.nkthen.biz - harushigi, on 03/25/2008, -0/+0That's so cool. I wish Apple would open the iPod up so the community could port more of these games. regards, http://directdownloadcenter.com
