- Tunguska, on 10/11/2007, -1/+39I also find it alarming that these iPhones are 'solid gold'?
Where do all the wires and circuit boards go? - uberphildo, on 10/11/2007, -1/+29Just as I pointed out in the comments over at engadget, the words "karat" or "carat", which are used to describe the weight or amount of gold in an object such as a ring (or I suppose a phone...) are not present on either of the two "solid gold" auctions listed.
The word used to describe the phone is "KART", which, when looked up on wikipedia, refers to racing karts such as Mario Kart.
Just one of the many things that smells a little off about these auctions... - demonstro, on 10/11/2007, -0/+25I could buy one of these with my South African Lottery winnings.
- SteveMax, on 10/11/2007, -0/+22How would eBay survive if they did something to stop scams?
- drobati, on 10/11/2007, -0/+21Why doesn't ebay have a forum section under an item for people to discuss and warn others. I mean ***** like this is ***** ridiculous.
I know it has user feedback but I'm not going to feedback the guy if he can feedback me and ruin my reputation by saying Im the crazy one. - qber, on 10/11/2007, -0/+14Not to mention, 14 karat gold is only a little more than 50% gold, as pure gold is 24 karat.

You don't need to gold plate it.
Most apple fans think all apple's products are already solid gold/gold plated. Making actual solid gold/gold plated apple products would just confuse them. - svenjick, on 10/11/2007, -0/+11Auction has been removed from ebay...
- nixr, on 10/11/2007, -0/+8Because the iPhones aren't already expensive enough.........
- Uranium118, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7I hope they don't make it in pure gold, you'd be able to bend your iPhone like a piece of paper.
- EBFoxbat, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7Apple Store is down.... we should be able to buy these once it's back up.
- willitguy, on 10/11/2007, -3/+9I want one. Right after I buy a Diamond plated PS3 on onlyanidiotwouldbuythat.com
- btbridges, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6whatever. i'm totally happy with the elian gonzalez raft that i bought a few years ago.
- angusm, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6Back in the '80s, I remember seeing an article about a company that was taking a BBC Micro (a 6502-based 8-bit microcomputer with 32K of RAM) and building it into a solid gold case for a buyer from the United Arab Emirates.
I thought it was a stupid idea at the time, but now that I think of it that machine is probably worth only a bit less today than it was when he bought it. Whereas a standard BBC Micro, which used to sell for something like $800, is now pretty close to worthless.
Moral: gold plate _everything_ you buy, especially if the value of the basic item is likely to depreciate strongly after sale. Whether it's a toothbrush or a pet, you can maximize your investment by having it gold-plated. - unleashedlive, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5Actually it's 30 days from the beginning of the auction. Meaning he has to have it by June 11th......
- yensed, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5Wish there was a delete button... My bad.
- newworldodor, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4Only a moron would fall for this scam.. Look at the people selling them.
- rasty, on 10/11/2007, -1/+5"Solid gold iPhones for sale"
What, you mean the $599 one isn't already?!! - inactive, on 10/11/2007, -0/+31025??? If you notice the current high bidder has a rating of zero. looks like the seller had to make up an account to get the highest bid because he dosent have a ***** i-phone.
- stevenvh, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3I admit that I first read it as "Karat". But of course 14 carat is not "solid gold", that would be 24 carat.
You definitely don't want it in 24 carat gold: pure gold is soft, you can scratch it with your fingernail. And heavier and of course more costly than, e.g. 18 carat, which would be ideal.
So you don't want this iPod either: http://www.ipodhacks.com/article.php?sid=2202 - praveenmarkandu, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3lol. KNOX. am i the only one that gets it?....fort knox?... gold.nevermind
- john570, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Elian Gonzalez- That comment was so - NOT predictable.
- apltnhkymutt, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Is that third auction listed fake too? http://cgi.ebay.com/Pre-Sale-Brand-New-Apple-iPhone-8-GB-from-Cingular_W0QQitemZ150121663975QQihZ005QQcategoryZ64355QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem#ebayphotohosting
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Am I an idiot for trying to go to the site that you posted :(?
- nixem311, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3Quote:"naska: I sick of iPhone and marijuana posts."
then maybe you shouldn't be on Digg my friend.. lol - waterboy1628, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Hah, that guy made over $700. All he has to do is get an iPhone within 30 days of its release and ship it. Pretty good idea actuallly.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2Steve Jobs is selling himself on ebay.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1In all honesty, it wouldn't be hard to gold plate anything apple makes.
- juicymixx, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1excellent, now I have a birthday present for my solid gold dancers.
- BeerRules, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1They've already got a Gold iPod, but I don't think for one second that this is going to ship tomorrow. That's the real question when will the person receive the Solid Gold iPod if they bought it.
- boza111, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Maybe he was saving his positive feedback for a rainy day. Maybe he is desperate for money!
- TexanPsycho, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2If it's solid gold, where will all the hardware go?
- Amnesia10, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Actually I think that others like finding them and reporting to make sure that others are warned.
- GHOVO, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0OK...this thing is just oure of problems but still an altogether stupid idea....It may sell but it will have so many complaints.
- techsmack, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0I think it would work much like reseller rating, too many fakes boosting the company. Plus even if the person was reputable what would happen if he had one bad sale to the wrong person, who would then try to spam every auction he had. I think in a perfect world, this is a great idea... but we are in anything but a perfect world.
- Solkre, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0Toki can finnaly have that solid gold telephone he wanted!
- ericstir, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0yes, I agree with there being a couple problems, but other than that what a great idea. I mean, the more things we have coated in gold the better. I mean if it was socially acceptable, I would drape myself in gold.
- crossers, on 07/04/2008, -0/+0gold iphones? I hate gold! I think it's not good!

http://www.chasr.org/ - sloths, on 10/11/2007, -3/+2If it says "apple" the fanboyzealots will buy.
- john570, on 10/11/2007, -3/+2The damn thing isn't even out yet and it's only going to have 5GB storage capacity. PASS. Gold plated or not. I have a cell phone already.
- pixel_jockey, on 10/11/2007, -1/+0This has to be total bull$hit... it would weigh like 5lbs. you could never carry it in your pocket without dropping trou
- slapthemonkey, on 10/11/2007, -3/+1Is the auction still on?
- rento, on 10/11/2007, -5/+3I wonder if this version will play 50 cents p.i.m.p.
- NasKa, on 10/11/2007, -3/+1I sick of iPhone and marijuana posts.
- sleephood, on 10/11/2007, -4/+0I'm not usually one to play the 'decadence' card, but if this were legit, I would play it...
- CelebVoy, on 10/11/2007, -7/+2Faked...
