- KillerX, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11Different products that do different things.
iTV used to see media from your computer on your tv.
Slingbox is used to view media from your tv, dvr, cable on your computer anywhere thru the internet.
:p - coit, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10I guess Mac360 must've run out of ideas, so they wrote this.
The iTV hooks to your TV, and shows things from your computer. The Slingbox hooks to your video source (Cable, TiVo, etc.) and shows things on your computer.
How in the world could anyone things these two things are even remotely in the same market segment? - lilzaphod, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10Unless ITV does true plac-shifting, it won't be as valuable to me as my slingbox.
Slingbox looks like crap in the house, but it looks great 2000M away in my hotel room.
I see the two technologies as simillar but much different for useage. - CarbonEclectic, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10Accessing iTV remotely like a slingbox, would be a pretty sweet deal. This kind of functionality would pair very well with .mac accounts.
- Singee15, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6"Mac users have long wanted to stream video from Macs to TVs and Apple’s pre-announcement of “iTV” means the dream will come true.
The dream is here with Slingbox. Will Apple’s iTV be this good? "
slingbox sends to computer (or handheld)
iTV sends to TV
iTV != slingbox - timdietrich, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4That's why Jobs mentioned it is only an internal codename for now to be changed at release.
- punx45, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4the slingbox is in production and available in stores. the iTV was a sneak peak. it has not been officially announced and there is no official feature list yet. it is futile to compare the two now. and in other news, neither one records (as of now), so whatever.
- bentl1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3The iTV isn't a competitor for the Slingbox. And after reading the article, I wonder what the purpose is, as variations of this have existed for years for the PC. Apple's just too late and even Steve's reality distortion field won't save it. The Sling has tons of hacks for all kinds of devices and I wouldn't be surprised if there was a IR hack for Sage TV or Beyond TV that would allow video streaming from a computer. As far as iTV goes, I carry an iPod, so why would I want streaming audio from my computer? Since I found there is so little software for my Mac, I assume this is the only thing they can think of to help us stream using Apple's stuff. But why would we want to? I was one of the first Slingbox owners and I use it daily to stream video/audio from my satellite receiver and run my ReplayTV. It really is the ultimate remote media device. Watching a satellite pay-per-view fight live from Vegas piped into my Tokyo hotel room and being able send a Battlestar episode my friend missed, directly to his ReplayTV in a different state, at the same time, is amazing. I can also stream/watch my photos stored on the ReplayTV as easily as I can sitting at the computer ..... even while at a coffeehouse in London. ...... So what again is the purpose of the iTV?
- sybersnake, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5exactly, they're exact opposites of each other. Mac360 just dropped a few points in my opinion.
- Graeleight, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2http://duggmirror.com/apple/Slingbox_may_be_the_reason_Apple_Pre_Announced_iTV/
For those (like me) for whom the automatic redirect doesn't work. - QBranch, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Cliff, are you trying to turn this place into MacWhispers or what?
- chesterton, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Slingbox is not something I have any need for. Depending on what iTV can do and if I can get it to stream Divx video to my TV, then this will quickly become a must-have for me and my household. The main thing that has kept me from purchasing the AirPort Express is because it is audio-only and has to be controlled from the computer. If iTV allows me to browse the content on my Mac and stream it down, I will be so there.
- archer75, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I sure hope that itv and steam other content than what is purchased through apples store. I want to stream all of my video and photos in all formats.
- jkr06, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The writer of this article is an idiot.
- evansls, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2iTV wireless streams downloaded media content from your computer onto your local TV set. Slingbox wireless streams your TV content to either your computer on the network or to a remote computer/smart phone.
Now, if iTV can stream downloaded media content to another computer outside your network/smart phone that would be just as cool, too. But, out of the box, I think there's a clear difference between the two products. - nofxjunkee, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1let's hope we don't get a flashback of the Wii announcment and get something lame like the WiiTV or Wiivo. :-p
(i'm completely joking, apple has more sense than that) - skellener, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The real boon that iTV brings is IPTV type shows to your television! You'll be able to see Diggnation, TikiBarTV, etc all right on your TV with complete ease of use by way of Front Row! Forget downloadable DRM'd iTunes content. That's what Hollywood and Apple want you to use iTV for. Bogus! But iTV will finally even the playing ground for video podcasters - whoops, video NETCASTERS out there. Netcasts will have the same status as ABC, NBC, CBS, Fox etc. on the TV! Users can watch free netcast shows as simply as that episode of "My Name Is Earl" they recorded the night before on their TiVo. Yes, much of this can be done now by geeks, but this will bring the ease of use experience to the masses!
- nofxjunkee, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"I see the two technologies as simillar but much different for useage."
MUCH different. I don't have cable TV or a DVR. I don't need slingbox at all. When the iTV comes out I'll buy one in a heartbeat though, because it does exactly what I want.
Until these 2 products do start providing similar functionality I don't see them as competition at all. One goes from TV -> computer, and the other goes the other way.
[edit: killerx beat me to the punch below this post] - brianb722, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1How can you take any site seriously that writes the following garbage:
"Make no mistake. Apple’s Mac and OS X are better digital hub devices than Windows Media PCs. With Front Row improving with each version, and a streaming media solution on the way, Apple is on course to own the living room."
Hey we haven't used it and it's a long way from release, but I know it's going to be the best EVAR!!! How are they on course to own the living room? If the iTV is Mac-only, even if every Mac owner used one their market share would still be incredibly low.
Do Apple fanboys (I consider myself an Apple fan not a fanboy) not want any illusion of legitimate journalism or analysis? - AceTracer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1What the hell does iTV have to do with Slingbox? They're not at all alike.
- skellener, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1What I meant is that the Netcasts would receive the same status in the living room. You could watch DIGGNation just as easily as watching something on Cable or Satellite.
- sybersnake, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3exactly, they're opposites. Mac360 just dropped a few points in my mind.
- shaunrhussey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0While, I can agree that it was a defensive move looking forward. I have to also believe that, at this point, when the introduction of movies available for download on itunes was made, that to increase the number of downloads as well as the confidence factor, Apple had to announce something that would allow for people to realize, right now, what they could do with their downloaded movies in the near future. I had already made up my mind before the event that I would not download movies. Why? I didn't have a way to pipe it to my TV (Off the subject: does anyone remember how oddly Steve jobs was talking about "Big screen flat tv"-like they were terms he just heard?). Needless to say after seeing what is in store for me with the iTV I went ahead and downloaded a few.
So in short, yes defensive. More so marketing. - AstroPHX, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1In most cases, I agree that Apple's uncanny industrial design abilities win customers just by sheer "sexiness." In this case, however, I don't think people will buy the Apple product *unless* it offers functionality over form.
In this arena, I would compare it (the iTV) to wireless hub/routers. I.e., is the AirPort better looking than the comparable Linksys/Netgear/DLink product? Hell yes. Is it worth paying the premium to get no extra functionality? I think not.
Nothing that sits under my TV is worth looking at. As a matter of fact, that's the whole point: I don't want to see it. If however, iTV were a HAVA, TiVo, and "media hub" all rolled into one, then it would be worth looking at.
The DirecTV/Tivo integration is a killer app: I can record 2 High-Def channels simultaneously. It however lacks in its ability to store movies and music that I own. HAVA rocks over the Slingbox in that it can multicast, but fails in that it requires some odd IP setups. And none of the above are so simple that my mother-in-law can install.
THE product doesn't yet exist, and - IMHO - the iTV is not going to fill that void. - subcomandante, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1How hard would it be to implement something like this for the Wii? Not very hard I imagine. With the wireless network card, and all the outputs, it's just a matter of having the right software.
- NsinU8, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0@Brian
You are an idiot. iTV is for PC as well as mac. Jobs said that when he announced iTV. The article simply stated that the author thought Macs were better digital hub devices & with Front Row it is a nice start to winning the living room. - punx45, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0with the absolutely outrageous budgets that the major networks operate with, i really dont think netcasts will share the same status as network programming. what they will do, however, is deliver the final death blow to community access television, which is what I predicted with the advent of the video ipod. which kinda sucks because I work at one said access studio. oh well.
- shaunrhussey, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0I don't think it's just a ipod for tv system...I think you'll be able to stream stuff from YouTube. Apple has been in talks with google about incorporating what was thought to be just google video, now after the youtube purchase it could be much more.
I really think that there are a few tricks up the itv's uh...er..sleeve. So who knows if recording capabilities will be available... Apple is not going to let all the cats out of the bag until it's out and available on the Apple web site. - Javamancer, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Does anyone else see the blatant copyright issues with the name of this thing?
http://www.itv.com/ - brianb722, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1The Xbox 360 already does pretty much everything the iTV hopes to do.
- taintparty, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0You're going to have tons of idiots calling this "Apple's Tivo." When, in fact, it's just a TV iPod (only shows stuff you already have or have bought). They won't understand what it does until they get it home and figure out that it's just like the PVR that the cable company offers for $5/month, but without the critical "R" function. I see a lot of confusion over why anyone would bother buying this thing. I think the worst idea was calling it iTV, that name just screams PVR, when there is no actual TV involved. At least it will be made by Chinese slaves!
- jrbrewin, on 10/12/2007, -6/+2"stop your plans with others, do business with Apple"
exactly. The other companies have technologies in place right now, that work, are affordable, and that people are using. Apple, as always, has a hell of a lot of work to do to catch up - and as usual will probably come out with an elegant design, that lacks seriously in a number of major ways - but people will use it because design counts over content / functionality for some people. - Singee15, on 10/12/2007, -7/+2http://www.duggmirror.com
