- noneloud, on 10/12/2007, -4/+15Ireland: It's called a beta because it has bugs. It has a lot of bugs sometimes. This version wasn't even a beta: It was a leaked alpha, so it's your own fault if you use it and it messes something up.
I know Google watered down the whole aspect of Beta tests not being safe through it's over usage of the term, but you have Tobe suspicious of anything not available directly from the software manufacturer. This didn't even come from Skype's site (Because, they knew it would mess things up and that it wasn't ready for the public).
Software isn't easy to write, especially communications software that runs over Peer networks. It's like kicking a field goal; Sure, it looks easy enough, you see it done all the time. All you have to do is but it through those two little poles that are really far apart.....Now get a football and try it; I bet your results won't be what you expect. - computerdude33, on 10/12/2007, -4/+13It will set your screen saver to that picture of Bill Gates with a Mac in the background.
- tifoco, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9Wow. I was just about to intall it when I saw this story.
Whew.
Digg for saving my ass. - Kazaki, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9Yes, he is aware of that point. He actually brought it up and made it clear in his own statement before you did.
Quote: I know Google watered down the whole aspect of Beta tests... - sfacets, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8So how will this destroy my mac?
- templest, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8"It will destroy your contacts"
Cool, gives a whole new meaning to the phrase "life hack". - caldroun, on 10/12/2007, -5/+9Why would someone install something named Skype that wasn't downloaded off of the MAIN SITE! If a mac doesn't have a virus problems now...it soon will if everyone does stuff like that.
I went to the download site earlier to look, and I was like WTF is this? That is like someone saying, "Hey, I have a leaked copy of Safari, come and get it" - r3zonance, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3"Corrupts your Address Book contacts, for one."
Again, how exactly has that DESTROYED a Mac? - oOLiquidNightOo, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4> Corrupts your Address Book contacts, for one.
true. i just shot off a racy email to my wife. the problem is .. it went to my mom. - mark1372, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4I, for one, am glad I don't wear contacts. Phew...dodged a bullet there!
- JakeMcMahon, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3You're an idiot.
- joppefan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I have been using it on 2 macs and i know a couple other that uses it and NO problem, i dont know what all the fuzz is about.
- titlesaysitall, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3damn I must be lucky, nothing happened since I installed it this morning, no loss of contacts, or Address Book corruption.
- Midnightbrewer, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Just goes to show you why virii are so successful. You can make the most secure system in the world yet will never be able to program around greed and stupidity.
- jabba, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Creating a new non-admin user account is the best way to test it. No problems here, whatsoever, it's much improved over the 1.4 version
- aptget, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Yep, an operating system is only as secure as it's user.
If a teen has "asdf" protecting their MySpace, or an adult protecting their Bank info, no OS is going to protect them.
I think it's only a matter of time before malicious people start targetting illiterate people running Macs.
It won't be easy as infecting Windows computers because of passworded-installs, but it'll still be possible because they'll give permission to install it (instead of just clicking on Windows). - mpeters13, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I've been using this beta all day... how are people losing their contacts... this thing only crashes about as much of the normal one does... and that would basically be anytime i try and open audacity. not a troll... please share.
- Ireland, on 10/12/2007, -4/+4I have the old app. I trashed that buggy new one. Can I get my contacts back, or are they gone forever?
- jimbothegrey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0works good here.
- igraham09, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2i second... i just got home and was like "hmm, i wonder what that new beta of Skype is like"
thnx Digg! - kellylohman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Works fine for me. Not sure what all the fuss is about. The only real truth is that Skype for Mac absolutely stinks!
- Dan10, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The only people who are worried about using this Skype beta, are the people who have no confidence operating their machines. There are obviosly a few bugs with this, but works fine for me and surprise surprise......my contacts are still intact, and anyway if you don't back up your contacts in address book your a bloody idiot as that is the buggiest program on the mac. People please stop scare mongering, we have PC people for that.
- TDoggyDogg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0We've had these for years in Canada .. whats the big deal?
- voipdude, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Yeah, I am using the voicestick for the mac. Softphone works great, and they give you a free local phone number with free incoming calls.
- paulisnotdead, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Great timing I had downloaded it the other day and hadn't opened it yet
Digg rocks - sneeka2, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1@ireland: Toché!
Err... - aquadude, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1I have a friend who's been using the beta all day on his MBP. His stuff is still there.
- macman81, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Been using it for about 6 hours now... not one crash. It's more stable than the 1.4 public release.
Lots of missing features yet, but it's actually working, which is amazing enough heh.
Running on a G5 iMac after I deleted my Library files and created a new account w/in Skype 1.5 BETA. - tifoco, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2Really? Can I get a copy?
- kallgaier, on 10/12/2007, -3/+0So far, no one has mentioned which version is in question here. I am cruently running 1.5.0.17 beta. Are you talking about this one, or a 2.0 beta?
- zoltan, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1looks like a mac virus 8)
- 4NDr01D, on 10/12/2007, -3/+0mine already got erased when i sync'd my new celphone, funny how my back up on another hard drive didnt actually store any of the old data.
- vans12, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1I prefer to use voicestick on my mac, it is not buggy at all. you can download it at http://www.voicestick.com/
- frem001, on 10/12/2007, -10/+7omg you didn't backup? not even .mac?
- crocos, on 10/12/2007, -3/+0How about this for an idea: If you see a copy of skype on a peer-to-peer (or whatever) network, don't download it. That way you don't expose yourself to dodgy hacked versions, or (in this case) dodgy leaked alpha versions.
- bjtitus, on 10/12/2007, -6/+1Haven't had any problems yet. Don't have many contacts either, so it doesn't matter too much.
- robbyt, on 10/12/2007, -6/+1ok, here i go again...
if skype were OPEN SOURCE this wouldn't be an issue...
and here's why. Unstable versions of open source software are never hidden away like magic trinkets. In open source land, developers want the knowledgeable users to use unstable versions so that they can provide testing and feedback! Compare this to closed source land, you're lucky if you even get a ***** changelog with a new release, let alone convenient access to unstable/beta/testing software - Ireland, on 10/12/2007, -11/+6@mmilian.. ***** better not have!! That's the second dodgy beta I've got from Skype, I'm never using Skype beta's again! What the heck is keeping them anyway. Windows got their 2.0 like 500 years ago.
- t3hX, on 10/12/2007, -9/+3Inaccurate. How does damaging my address book destroy my mac?
Still, it's dangerous, nonetheless.
Well, duh, it's a beta. Of course there's something likely wrong with it, or it would have been released officially. - Ireland, on 10/12/2007, -12/+2@ noneloud. The word beta's overused these days, look at Google.
