- pitbull67, on 01/06/2009, -2/+32ummmm.... it is tuesday right?
still 2.7 - eatrains, on 01/06/2009, -0/+26Skype still can't do multi-person video chats. Why's it taking so long to add that?
- erfonh, on 01/06/2009, -0/+22looks like it's in beta, here's the link:

- Zippo, on 01/06/2009, -1/+18Hot damn... good to see some good updates to Skype!
- SuperJimmyJimbo, on 01/06/2009, -1/+18whoa! what's iChat? :P
- virtualball, on 01/06/2009, -1/+16You mean Skype, right?
- ralphthemagi, on 01/06/2009, -3/+16The big difference is that Skype uses a P2P protocol, so you never have to worry about NAT and/or router problems. Doing anything over AIM/iChat requires a direct connection, which is often difficult with users who don't have a properly configured router/firewall, on a public hotspot, or are behind a double-NAT network, etc..
- jaymulder, on 01/06/2009, -3/+16That's what she said.
- caitlinwoodward, on 01/06/2009, -0/+8For those mentioning that iChat already does this: I use Adium, and open up Skype for voice/video chatting, and iChat for screen sharing; so the fact that Skype now supports screen sharing throws having to open iChat completely out of the picture.
On topic of the article, though, I just tried it out. Kind of neat that you can share just a selection of a screen (or a monitor). But the person watching -can't- interact, just watch, where in iChat both people can fully interact. Capabilities are a bit different on both. - dAbReAkA, on 01/06/2009, -0/+8time to update the linux version?
- sloppychris, on 01/07/2009, -0/+7Skyape hardy even works on Ubuntu 8.10. Lots of bitching has gone on at the official Skype forums about the linux version, to little avail.

The staff basically says, "We're working on something, but we can't tell you what it is, when it will be done, or any other details about it.".
I say lots more bitching is in order. - caitlinwoodward, on 01/07/2009, -0/+7Usually it's the other way around...
- pwr4, on 01/06/2009, -0/+6Skype DOES NOT allow you to remote control another computer, only to share your screen.
- Jeremyz0r, on 01/06/2009, -3/+9Isn't that a feature Net Meeting had back in 1998?
- Radan, on 01/07/2009, -0/+6iChat got a devilish video quality, it's a shame that no one on this freaking part of the earth uses AIM.
- mcnees287, on 01/06/2009, -0/+6cant you already do this with ichat?
not saying i dissaprove, hell anything to challenge the big ass phone companies is good. - KittySpark1es, on 01/06/2009, -0/+6Has anyone found any web cam program that gives a higher image quality + framerate than Skype? I've found that it's better than MSN, but I'm wondering if anything else out here is higher quality than Skype.
- jasonh1234, on 01/06/2009, -3/+8Allow me to remote control a Windows machine? Crosses Fingers. So much easier to get a client to install or upgrade Skype than install and configure LogMeIn Free with the added bonus of Voice capability.
- ethana2, on 01/06/2009, -0/+5Nothin' but problems, skype. I look forward to empathy replacing it for me.
Or heck, maybe we could use the Windows version in WINE.. - BrendanSheehan, on 01/06/2009, -5/+10The app Apple made that had screen sharing first, before iChat.
- blackjack75, on 01/07/2009, -0/+5Also I can hardly convince my PC friends to use anything but skype. I'd use iChat if didn't have to use it.. alone.
- fugazied, on 01/06/2009, -0/+4Thats a nice upgrade
- Baryn, on 01/07/2009, -0/+4He's in a fanboy trance. :P
- tbhurst, on 01/07/2009, -0/+4Thanks.
- xtremepado, on 01/07/2009, -0/+4People have to make a request to share your screen and you see everything they are doing. If they do anything you don't like you simply cut them off. And if you are seriously still using hotmail i strongly urge you to switch to gmail.
- sonicdeviant, on 01/07/2009, -0/+3I'll wait for the official release.
- BreatheRhetoric, on 01/07/2009, -0/+3Still not out. They didn't state which Tuesday....
- RobotBuddha, on 01/06/2009, -0/+3Same here. Sound stopped working for me a while back. I'd assumed a pulse issue, except that it was working fine with pulse before on my system.
- enterneo, on 01/07/2009, -0/+3This is really annoying. Its been over an year since iChat had this feature, so is certainly doable. Not all of my family members use OS X, so have been waiting for the feature to pop up in Skype, but they certainly are ignorant.
- sq2shooter, on 01/07/2009, -0/+3You don't have to share your whole screen. I just tried it and it gives you the option to share a specific window. Actually works pretty well.
- gottadiggit, on 01/07/2009, -0/+3Just what I want is broadband access for $11.40 per hour. Hot damn!
- tbhurst, on 01/07/2009, -0/+3Yeah, I know. I suppose we still have a few hours left!
- real, on 01/07/2009, -0/+2someone tell leo to do the update after MBW
- DiScDuCe, on 01/06/2009, -0/+2So.... it looks like they are going to wait till the last second of the day to release this version. Still not available for download on the Skype site.
- ilgaz, on 01/08/2009, -0/+2I mean when it is compared to Windows and Linux (GTK especially). Apple must have changed couple of things in all these years. E.g. Developers love Objective C 2.x and started to ship 10.5.x only apps because of it. Remember who was involved in OpenStep. The usual suspects. So, perhaps current stuff (GNUStep, Cocoa) may have changed how things work/done?
Fring people could ship their very complex app in matter of months without any kind of official documentation (first version was jailbreak one). That should be a nice example. It took years for them to hit such features on Symbian S60/Windows Mobile even with the gigantic documentation both Nokia and MS provides.
Also if you look at Safari for Windows (itunes/qt are archaic), they could ship the exact same code to Windows in matter of months didn't they? - xtremepado, on 01/07/2009, -1/+3Today Tuesday?
- induren, on 01/06/2009, -0/+2Yey!
- egzeqtA, on 01/07/2009, -0/+2any screenshots presenting screen sharing?
- jpt62089, on 01/07/2009, -0/+2Hold your horses! I'm STILL waiting for Google Chrome!
- ilgaz, on 01/07/2009, -0/+2Normally it should be the case. Ask any developer how easy coding for OS X is. OS X has roots in NeXT which makes developers think about "what their app should do" rather than "how to make an app".
Of course mostly political and market reasons made us get used to "windows first and others later" scheme.
iPhone should be another proof too. Most Symbian S60 apps were ported in matter of months to iPhone thanks to object oriented model and easy to use frameworks which are already there.
ps: One should also thank to Trolltech Qt which makes such things possible in multi platform manner too. - enterneo, on 01/07/2009, -0/+1"You can share your screens with Skype for Windows and Skype for Linux users too, but you won’t be able to see theirs (yet) ;) " - still sweet, thanks
- starkraving, on 01/07/2009, -0/+1+1 here as well, Skype works for me but is extremely limited. I'd like them to update the client so that it also has the "Do More..." menu like I have in Windows, to launch 3rd party related apps like Yugma. If they're working on screen sharing for Mac, I seriously hope the update the other 2 versions as well, for consistency.
- pamuckraker, on 04/10/2009, -0/+1Skype is the type of product that doesn't jive with either Apple or AT&T's business plans of monopolization. Neither will talk about the alleged federal violations. For more information on this issue, here is an article to read: http://www.yourlawyer.com/topics/overview/Iphone-S ...
- ilgaz, on 01/07/2009, -0/+1Funny is, Fring third party app using their API but not certified became de facto standard to reach their network on both Symbian and iPhone.
Something tells me that they should be coding a real mobile (Symbian, iphone, advanced j2me) app first (not that current j2me joke) and add cosmetics to desktop later. - gjokkel, on 01/08/2009, -0/+1I am proud of being one of the few "certified" NeXT programmers. And yes, Objective-C was absolutely mind-blowing - in 1992. But to be honest its syntax looks and feels like Grandpa's old Chevy truck in these days. Unfortunately it is THE preferred dev environment for Macs and iPhone and apparently this is not going to change.
- Vazelos, on 01/07/2009, -0/+1I got it off Version Tracker
- MrKiTT3N, on 01/07/2009, -0/+1it just replaces your camera feed with your computer screen
- norz, on 01/29/2009, -0/+1"At the moment, screen sharing only works when sharing from a Mac-to-Mac or Mac-to-PC. We’re working hard on a PC-to-PC and PC-to-Mac version."
