- pinab, on 10/12/2007, -3/+22Disco DOES do disc images!
- landmonster, on 10/12/2007, -3/+16Rubbish article.
- miles01110, on 10/12/2007, -3/+13Oops, turns out I hadn't downloaded the right version. digg down....fast.
- drumnbass, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10Slightly off-topic - but does anyone know how to overburn CDs in OS X (or if it's even possible)?
- Jjcd7, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7I have a feeling that if it was an ad for Disco, it would have been mentioned in the end. It only mentioned Toast, then DiscBlaze if you want it cheaper, then Burn for free.
- rufo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6I haven't really had any problems with VLC's DVD playback... you do need to check the "Use DVD Menus" option in the open window but other then that, it's worked fine for me.
- uymai, on 10/12/2007, -4/+9that kind of felt like an ad for disco...considering its con was "UI does not fit in with OS X’s UI, eye candy can be distracting." and there happens to be a coupon code for macapper on the site....
- miles01110, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8Oh right, sorry- I hadn't downloaded the full release.
- bettaa, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7I don't get it; what happened to good old Disk Utility? I need no other program for burning CDs/DVDs.....
I agree with you, landmonster... - mikev, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6Quality over quantity. Please STFU.
- caesar0801, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5using Disco right now...
it's an ok app... but gotta say it's typical Mac to add such a useless feature like the smoke...
but heck... I love it! Completely useless... but apparently I'm easily impressed by this kind of
eyecandy ;-)
Wouldn't call this a real "list" as there are only 4 listed apps... Especially if you start your article with:
"There’s a plethora of burners for OS X, and more coming out each week" - LaughingMan11, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5I've been able to play DVDs on external DVD drives using the Apple software...
- jaycliche, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6Yeah mac os x vista edition...foolish spamman.
- craigly, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4iTunes 7 does it. Here's the link: http://www.macosxhints.com/article.php?story=20060914063621259
- ucg1, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Linux: I have many CD burning apps, but they all share the same back-end. And they're all free.
- rufo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I think you're just completely overlooking it because it's so basic... I know for a fact that both Apple's built-in tools (use Disk Utility) and Toast let you erase CD-RWs. Not sure about the others.
- Firehed, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Okay, that's at least the third time you've posted that link. Would you please stop your damn spamming? If you want it so much, go hack Toast apart and put smoke on it so the people who like Disco's simplicity and UI will shut up, mmmkay?
- devilsanthem, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Is there a burner that allows for equalizer settings that will take effect on the burnt songs like with Nero?
- cbreaker, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Disc Utility is a fantastic piece of software to be built into the operating system, but it has shortcomings. Namely, you can't create a standard ISO image out of a disc with it, and it won't mount a disc image to perfectly resemble an actually mounted physical disc.
- craigly, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Pardon the extra noise. I wasn't aware that I couldn't respond to myself. My 2nd comment above regarding iTunes 7 was saying that it will burn CD-Text when burning an audio CD. I was responding to my 1st comment where I asked if anyone knew of a CD burning application that would burn CD-Text. Here's the link again: http://www.macosxhints.com/article.php?story=20060914063621259
digg down my previous 2 comments if you so desire. - ausdigger, on 09/15/2009, -0/+1What do you guys reckon is the best (without toast) ?
Toast tends to make coasters in my intel imac :-( - miyamotofreak, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I love Toast. It has alot of cool stuff besides GUI. It's simple, powerful, and innovate. And cheap.
- MrMacMan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Sorry Firehed people just always comment about the damn smoke... and I don't think it is really all the damn impressive.
- rufo, on 10/12/2007, -5/+6Why the hell did you reply to yourself twice?
I smell karma-whorism... - SVPirate, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I don't call 99.99 bucks cheap. It's probably worth it, but it's not cheap.
- Dolomite, on 10/12/2007, -4/+5Its got the best graphics. And my opinion is not spam.
- ucg1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@MrSelfDestruct
I've had no problems burning all kinds of media using K3B in Linux.
What problems have you had with burning CD/DVD's in Linux? - cbreaker, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3That's funny, because: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=42727
It still applies to Tiger. (http://www.osxhax.com/archives/000074.html)
You can't play DVD Images, and I can't play discs (real or copied) on my External firewire DVD Drive. Apparently, SOME external drives MIGHT work. Most apparently do not. (They have to have some special "apple supported" ***** bit.)
Mod me down if you want to, but if anyone knows of an alternative to the Apple DVD Player, please post it. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"Its got the best graphics. And my opinion is not spam."
Any application can smoke in OSX, not to many applications burns Bluray discs right now. - schneb, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I have Toast and Burn. Toast makes coasters, Burn is awesome. Toast has a few extra tools I like, and is the only source of obtaining files off of my DVD Recorder's unformatted files, but I doubt I will upgrade.
- rufo, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4I've got to say, I really do like Disco. I agree that it doesn't do anything dramatically different then the other disc burning utilities out there, but I like the simple, minimalist UI - it feels easier to me to get in, burn a disc and get out then the other disc burning utilities that I've used.
Just sayin'. - nicc, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Toast and iTunes (at least v7) will write CD-Text. you have check the check box for CD-Text writing.
- MrMacMan, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2You know... you can easily add the smoke effect to any application right here:
http://toxicsoftware.com/blog/second-hand-smoke/ - LaughingMan11, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Look up DragonBurn. It's a little bit older (not sure if there's an Intel version, but that definitely did overburning.
http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/7502 - SVPirate, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I use Disk Utility, Finder and iTunes. When I need anything else I'll buy Toast.
- MrMacMan, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Well Um... you can add the smoke effect to any application:
http://toxicsoftware.com/blog/second-hand-smoke/
So now that you can make any application smoke... does Disco's best 'feature' matter? - klawz, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=DiskUtility/10.5/en/duh6.html
Some people just love to be pampered with research results. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -4/+5Is anyone else seeing the pattern from this site?
Several times it has been on the homepage and every single article is absolutely terrible.
Buried this is spam - Michael Yurichenko is a CO FOUNDER of this site and stands to gain from this reaching the homepage. I suggest everyone else does the same. - craigly, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Hmmmn, not a single one of the reviewed products will write CD-Text to an audio disc. iTunes doesn't either, to the best of my knowledge. Does anyone know of *any* CD-burning application for Mac OS X that will write CD-Text?
- RyeBrye, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2The reason there are a ton of disc burning apps is because Apple has a disc burning framework that's easy for developers to slap a GUI on and call a "disk burning program"
If you care about the actual engine that is controlling your burn - you have two options. Toast, or the Apple disk burning framework. If your burner isn't supported by Apple - you can either run Toast, or nothing (unless you use PatchBurn). - klawz, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2disk utility can make a .cdr image, which you can rename to .iso (correct me if I"m wrong)
- cbreaker, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Ohh, I think Toast is a really nice piece of software. It's really easy to make an Audio CD, DVD with simple menus, burn images, mount images that Finder won't support directly - all in one very simple interface. It also mounts ISO's and other images as real discs, so software can't tell that it's an Image being loaded.
I like Toast. I could use a combination of different tools to do the same stuff, but I like the simplicity and single-solution approach of Toast. And really, the DVD creation tools are so easy - you can just drag some media files of almost any type over to the window, and click Burn. Obviously it takes a little while to transcode, but the MPEG encoder included with Toast seems fairly good. - klawz, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3tell us why, don't just spam us your opinion.
- judgeFire, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1hdiutil is a recent favorite of mine. Comes free with Mac OS X, runs from the command line (Terminal) and works great with Windows .iso files, too.
Here's a primer : http://www.macosxhints.com/article.php?story=20040921173351970 and here's the man page: http://developer.apple.com/documentation/Darwin/Reference/Manpages/man1/hdiutil.1.html - DanielNielsen, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Toast is far the best one, i love that app.
- cbreaker, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1That's classic. "This DVD Burner app is the best because it has the best graphics." For a game, I can see the logic. For such a utility app? Priceless.
- cbreaker, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1It seems that maybe 1 out of 10 DVD's play back, with menus, successfully with VLC. More often then not, something is very wrong with the way the disc is played; you can't fast forward or rewind, or chapters don't work, or the menus don't play correctly at all.
I guess your mileage may vary, but it's not a great DVD player. It's an awesome media player otherwise, though. I use it regularly. - Firehed, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I agree - the smoke is cool, but utterly pointless. I got Disco as part of the MacHeist bundle so I use it, but I've yet to have a need for anything that OS X's integrated disc burning offers. I don't see why Toast always gets such praise though... must be one of those long-tail things (80% of the people only need 20% of what it offers). Disco gives me drag-and-drop burning of both files and disc images with a pretty UI. Although I'll admit, being able to blow into the mic and have the smoke get blown away is the ultimate in useless show-off-ish UI novelty (not complaining - I need some entertainment while waiting for discs to burn!). For the rare occasion where I need to burn video that's not already in some sort of iso/cdr/dmg/other format (extremely), iDVD (which came with my Mac for free) handles it fine, and I think that's the only thing I might ever use that Disco doesn't offer that Toast does.
- JohnnyRad, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1this seems like a FLOG made by Roxio...
- robdazomba, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0@klawz, it's Mac users like you who give the rest a rep for being snotty. Thanks for the help but screw your attitude. I'm not a Mac user so I don't spend time searching Apple's site. Generally, CD burning is not a topic one needs to search online technotes to figure out. And anyway, I thought Macs were "more intuitive." I do have access to Macs and tried searching its help system for "CD-RW" and "erase CD" but nothing came up. Perhaps Apple needs to stop hiding things on their site and put the info in their help system.
@rufo: thank you both for a reasonable and helpful response. I did not know about Disk Utility. I'll look at that more closely later today. Much appreciated.
@schneb: I don't personally use the erase and re-write features of CD-RW, but I have work-related needs for it and would require that at home were I to buy a Mac. -
