- inactive, on 12/26/2008, -1/+47I had a PPC Mac for years and I would still be using it (it still works!) for my primary machine if Apple hadn't switched to Intel. Now there is a new crop of apps and games that only work on Intel Macs, so you sorta have to upgrade, at least to a Mac with an Intel processor.
- LANjackal, on 12/26/2008, -8/+48Buy a new one, duh. How else does Apple make money? It never ceases to amaze me how many Apple fans rush out to get the latest product when the one they already own works just fine.
- Mushrif, on 12/26/2008, -7/+35I`d prefer to buy a new one ;)
- Floyder, on 12/27/2008, -13/+36Macs are like Scientology; every time you pay more money to upgrade, you get one more step closer to God.
- hafniOum, on 12/26/2008, -1/+20My personnal advice if you presently use a PPC machine buy a new one if you need it. If you are presently working with an Intel machine upgrading is a matter of what is your current spec and use you made on your system.
- sanderton, on 12/26/2008, -3/+22I have a Mac Mini, so I don't think upgrading is much of an option.
- EllimistX, on 12/27/2008, -0/+18@Ieathamburgers: I think your problem is that you bought a Mac Mini for gaming in the first place.
- inactive, on 12/27/2008, -4/+21Woah woah woah. I can upgrade my mac?
- j0hnc0ry, on 12/26/2008, -0/+14You can upgrade hard drive, ram, and processors on Intel Mac Minis.
- mdmcgee, on 12/27/2008, -2/+15changturkey :
Ubuntu, Fedora et. al. are derived from Minix not Unix.
Solaris, Irix, Novell Unixware, and Mac OSX are Unix.
Linux is "Unix like" but it is not Unix.
dirkdiggler1337 :
You have to wonder about the mentality of a person that wanders into a Mac thread and
spouts "Get Linux". Truly, do you think that by doing so you will win over some
convert? More than likely you will be dismissed as the sad troll you are.
Personally, I like my Unix (Solaris, MacOSX), Linux is great if you like it, fine.
In the end though it's an "Operating System (OS)" and it's ok for people to have their
own preferences and choice in the matter. Why should you or anyone else feel the need
to foist your preferences off on anyone else? (Which is what you are trying to do here)
You are not your OS, you are not your bowl cancer, you are the same decaying binary matter
as everything else etc... - roadtripper, on 12/27/2008, -2/+15You should buy a new one. Or maybe two. And you should also quit bugging me about that whole 'copy/paste' thing with the iPhone.
- S. Jobs - doctordbx, on 12/27/2008, -4/+17No, it's one of those trick articles, like Ron Paul for president and iPhone for gaming.
- Sonan, on 12/26/2008, -8/+20Upgrade a mac? They're becoming more like PCs every day! I always thought the beauty of macs was that they were more like appliances. When it gets old and out of date, you replace it with the latest model. I think that's part of what gives them their perceived stability, since you couldn't stray too far from the tried and tested configurations provided by Apple.
- ajb2015, on 12/27/2008, -9/+20if i didn't like just using my computer, i'd get linux. and don't talk to me about ubuntu, its a ***** pain in the ass. the day i can install a linux os and use it like i use my tv, i'll reconsider.
- sjps220, on 12/27/2008, -2/+13I don't agree with Jwoulf either, but come on. Shoddy quality and cheap imitation grade garbage? Give me a break. Just admit that you've been brainwashed.
I have nothing against macs, but the hardware is basically the same. Any of these arguments like "the hardware lasts longer!" or "pcs are shoddy quality and cheap imitation grade garbage" just show how SOME of the mac followers are complete dumb asses. - zydeco, on 12/27/2008, -0/+8How to Upgrade a Mac:
http://trunks.fireball20xl.com/*****/comic/comics/ ... - JoelJ, on 12/27/2008, -0/+8I'm not a Mac user, nor have I ever owned a mac. But I just want to say:
I'm sick of PC fanboys.
I'm sick of Linux fanboys.
I'm sick of Mac fanboys. - onlines, on 12/27/2008, -1/+9No, mac/mac. Unless you have bootcamp, then it's mac/win.
- Rikkochet, on 12/27/2008, -1/+9Doorstop? It's about the best media center hardware in the world.
I'm dreading my big media center PC case more and more every day. If I could run all my movies off a box no bigger than a router I'd be tickled.
Just because a computer is an aging or inappropriate desktop machine doesn't mean you can't do something awesome with it. - Wilddigi, on 12/27/2008, -0/+7I use my Dell for a doorstop
- sjps220, on 12/27/2008, -1/+8Just for the sake of comparison, I still run a low end xp laptop bought 6 years ago just before college. I put in an extra 512 mb stick of ddr this year to take the grand total memory up to 768mb. It actually runs quite well and boots really quickly. Some mac fans like to argue that the macs just last longer, and I like to bring this up. I'm sure there are examples out there of people using older computers for much longer, but this was a cheapo laptop which is what I love about it.
- dudefaceguyman, on 12/26/2008, -4/+11I'm getting a 2+1GB memory kit for my nearly 2 year old (now updated to 10.5) Macbook and eventually I plan to upgrade the hardrive as well.. I see myself pushing this thing an additional 2-3 years before I ever consider upgrading. :)
Nice thing about Macs is the incredible resell value too. Check a G4 iBook or Powerbook on ebay, those suckers still fetch a few hundred bucks. So there's no hurry in selling my laptop like I had with standard PC laptops before they became virtually worthless after a year or two. - Vermifax, on 12/27/2008, -2/+9Except people who upgrade Macs.
- inactive, on 12/27/2008, -1/+8No, it's like owning a Focus that just looks like and costs as much as a Ferrari.
- HolyChimp, on 12/27/2008, -0/+7First MacBook was still a Core Duo, just not a Core 2 Duo, whatever the difference. Only the Mini got the Core Solo. I know this because my Dual Core MacBook screwed up System Shock 2 and I had to set the affinity to only 1 core everytime I played it in Boot Camp.
- autobulb, on 12/27/2008, -1/+8I have nothing against Macs, but I don't really have a reason to use them so I don't. I thought this bit from the article was interesting:
"Many people are attached to their older Macs not just because they were an investment but also because, unlike PCs, Macs have a bit of character about them, so it's not quite as easy to treat them as mere commodities."
I'm confused about what 'character' Macs have that PCs don't? I was attached up to a certain point to all my PCs as well. I even get attached to PCs that I find on the street that I clean out/upgrade. In my opinion, Macs have less character because they're generally designed to be a static device. A PC can be upgraded to no end, until the computer you're using barely resembles the one you started out with. It's sort of something that you grow with over time. In my opinion a number of Mac users have this idea that Macs are something personal whereas PCs are just mass produced pieces of junk. They're both "mere commodities". I really have no intention of starting a stupid, pointless Mac vs. PC war but I'm curious as so why some/alot of Mac users have this view. - jer2eydevil88, on 12/27/2008, -1/+7Derived? I would say they are based on the same principals of Unix but not derived exactly... SCO on the other hand would like you to keep using that term.
- jschwan, on 12/27/2008, -1/+6 I recently bought a used 1.66 GHz Intel Core Duo Mac Mini on ebay for a couple hundred bucks, dropped in 2GBs of RAM and a 500 GB harddrive (yes you can upgrade them yourself, it's not that hard) and now have a sweet media server running 10.5.6, iTunes and AirFoil. I use it to store/play back all our HD home movies (iMovie) and Photos (iPhoto) as well. Not a bad investment for < $400 including software.
- bjstiktrix, on 12/26/2008, -0/+5I just did the same thing. I have a core duo black macbook that was the first one to come out (2 years or so). In the last 2 months I have replaced the original 80gb seagate hd (after cloning) with a 250gb model from newegg. I also upraded the previously upgraded 1gb of ram to the 2gb max. Both upgrades were super easy and only cost about $100 for an additional few years...
- thebloodvayne, on 12/27/2008, -1/+6That's the attitude! Go on, buy a new Mac every time yours goes technically obsolete. Do proceed.
- uppedbyhiggins, on 12/27/2008, -0/+5My Powerbook G4 1.25ghz with 2 gigs of RAM runs fine--flash games do not stutter. It's 5 years old.
It's the talk of the town.
...It's a small town. - inactive, on 12/27/2008, -2/+6Macs do run on Unix.
- Aeaus, on 12/27/2008, -0/+4The only mac that doesn't have a removable battery is the Macbook Air :/ Which is another niche computer at best.
- borez, on 12/27/2008, -0/+4http://www.macosxhints.com/article.php?story=20061 ...
- blorc, on 12/27/2008, -4/+8It never ceases to amaze me how many people care what other people do with their money.
- soopafly, on 12/27/2008, -2/+6You're probably one of those people that think that Mac's have no right click either right??
- cfuse, on 12/27/2008, -0/+4How 'bout neither?
- ericdano, on 12/27/2008, -0/+4Which you can upgrade to a Core 2 Duo......you know that right?
- bitweever, on 12/27/2008, -0/+4I dismantled my Powerbook last week, and pounded out all the dents. It looks good now that it's all back together. So, I guess I'm keeping it for a while :)
- vsujohn2, on 12/27/2008, -6/+10Cause you can get 2 of them that can do what 1 mac can do for the price of that 1 mac.
Digg me down, you'll only prove me right! haha - hiro, on 12/27/2008, -0/+4I think you should upgrade your "Porche" by fitting an "s" in the middle
- TMTurtle, on 12/27/2008, -7/+11Neither?
- Aeaus, on 12/27/2008, -1/+4My question to you is how many times have you had to reinstall XP? I remember on my last PC which I pretty much used for work purposes only I had to reinstall XP after two years when lots of strange issues started cropping up.
- specialbuddy1, on 12/27/2008, -3/+6You mean the 9 year old crappy Compaq PC that my dad leaves on almost everyday and it still works? Macs have the same innards as any other computer out there. What about those Nvidia cards that keep failing? It's not only on the PC end.
- Wilddigi, on 12/27/2008, -0/+3A MacPro can be updated with hard disks, memory and video cards
- hrpmike, on 12/27/2008, -1/+4For my stocks sake
- theblacknight, on 12/27/2008, -0/+3My 1GHz Ti Powerbook G4 (originally 512MB PC133 RAM) is about 6 years old now. So far, it has been cheaper to upgrade than to buy new. Over the last two years:
Power Supply (cord frayed) - $30
Hard Drive (last one was getting too many bad sectors, so I bought a 250GB one) - $80
RAM (one 256MB chip died, leaving me with 256MB) - free from
Motherboard Fan (too darn loud) - $20
Battery - $100
I'm waiting either for a catastrophic failure or the Core i7 in a Snow Leopard MacBook. Right now it's a bit slow, but as long as it works and costs less than $200 a year to keep running, it's not worth it to spend over $1000 on a computer I can't count on lasting more than 5 years. - specialbuddy1, on 12/27/2008, -0/+3So would you buy a car if you knew the engine overheated. Sounds like a smart way to spend your money.
- bigteebo, on 12/27/2008, -2/+5I thought to upgrade your mac was to buy a new one.
