- taylorhayward, on 10/12/2007, -2/+21How is "not-too-surprising" and also a "shocker"?
- filefly, on 10/12/2007, -6/+25Dugg for the words "Shocker of the year."
- Wenz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+15Actual TIME Magazine Gadget of the Year list for 2006
http://www.time.com/time/2006/goty/index2.html - merreborn, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8Note to all diggers: sarcasm is difficult to communicate in a headline.
And yes, koregaonpark attempted a sarcastic headline. - paulcooper, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8perhaps he meant 'sarcasm> Shock of the year: /sarcasm>
- bmicallef, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Yes the MacBook Pro and Nike iPod thingy do count as two items, but what you missed is that out of 8 separate articles Mac and/or iPod actually appear in 5 out of 8 of the gadgets listed ... to me this is the bigger tell of just how pervasive Apple's products have become ...
- rickcarson, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7Gee. I didn't realise the DS Lite cost $7.25

Heck, at that price, I'll take two!
Oh wait... how much do the games cost... - jovaani, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7Logitech has two items on the list as well!
- nfxmedia, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4It's amazing how Apple stories attract the "Apple haters". Do us all a favor and turn off Apple stories in your digg prefs.
As for the story; a laptop does qualify as a gadget. If you've never really used one, you don't have the right to knock them. - astrotrain, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2
Dugg for the negative vibes towards the Geek Squad - crilen007, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5Sponsored by Geek Squad? Oh noez.
- nfxmedia, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Fiddling with them in the Apple Store does not mean you've "used" them. Use them to get real work done and then voice your thoughts.
- rasterbator, on 10/12/2007, -4/+6One thing not mentioned is that users voted on the award. Time did not just give it out. A week ago, Nintendo DS had a 30% lead on the MacBook. But MDN posted a blog to encourage fanbois to go to TIME magazine. Then the MacBook and the DS were neck and neck. Just this morning, the DS was up 43% to 42%, and MDN posted a blog to go to the site and vote if you had not already done so. Apple closed the gap and passed the DS in the last minutes of voting.
Gaming the system at its finest. - rickcarson, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1What part of Nike + Ipod kit is only $29 do you not understand?
- Sedako, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4This is digg, a place where apple articles always make front page, regardless of content.
- Boondoggle, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Have you had a CAT scan lately?
- Boondoggle, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2An nowhere does it say that the product have to be "really anything new". In fact, none of the products are "really anything new". The selection is for the best gadgets for 2006, not for the best invention.
Of course one could argue that the ability to run XP at nearly full speed simultaneously with the OS X is at least "relatively new". - Bob042, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I wonder how much of the results could be attributed to the digg effect:
Final Results:
MacBook Pro 43%
DS Lite 42%
Nike Kit 8%
Logitech VX Revolution Mouse 2%
Sanyo HD1 Digital Media Camera 1%
Logitech Wireless DJ Music System 1%
Garmin StreetPilot c550 1%
Palm Treo 700w 1% - sjbdallas, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Thumbs up for the logitech stuff. I want both of them.
Could care less about the camera.
I sense that the guys at TIME might have all recieved free Treo's because given the choice between a blackberry pearl and treo, my treo has become a boat anchor. - scsikool, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I think they picked the gadgets prematurely. My choice for gadget of the year would be the HP iPAQ hw6920 phone with builtin GPS. Much cooler than the Treo.
http://digg.com/gadgets/Cingular_Rolls_Out_GPS_Navigator_Service - girlflesh, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0MacBook Pros weren't recalled, the batteries were and in a non-explodey fashion. That's Dell that recalled 4.1 million batteries due to explosions.
- JohnFrisco, on 10/12/2007, -10/+10Why is the MacBook Pro on the list? It's just a 2003 Powerbook with a new name and an Intel chip!
- rasterbator, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3Uh, I think you posted the wrong link, numbnuts.
;) - moolcool, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1ive used them at the apple store. macbooks are nothing special. wheres the inovation? a power plug?
- Coffeedemon, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2...and neither one is really anything new.
- rickcarson, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1They didn't really explain why the Logitech mouse was there.
Okay... so it has a scroll wheel. Wow. Exciting. - Saiing, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1The DS should have won this hands down. The pathetic rigging of the vote by MDN fanboys admirably demonstrates the pros and cons of 'net based voting.
On the one hand, it's fairly democratic and easy to get a large number of votes. On the other, you get one lot of over-zealous enthusiasts plugging a single product and it ruins the credability of the whole thing. Mind you, if I were a betting man, I'd already have my money on the Wii for next years champion gadget. - Boondoggle, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Post one.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2logitechs products are acutally gadgets
unlike a laptop - Boondoggle, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Ah, but you are self-congratulating. Very Impressed with your own little way of looking at things it would seem.
- SineNomen, on 10/12/2007, -6/+4Can a laptop even count as a gagdet?
- No13Baby, on 10/12/2007, -8/+6digg down
- Langues, on 10/12/2007, -8/+6Logitech was twice on the list too. Wheres their digg story?
- gnomon, on 10/12/2007, -6/+3And by owning an Apple product, you too are unbelievably awesome and everyone wants to know.
- carn, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1I'm pretty sure those are not the final results and voting is still going on.
- regeya, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1Silly you, Logitech isn't Apple, therefore we can't hates them, can we Prrrecious?
Well, Logitech has gone through their hated period, too.
/typed on a Logitech kbd, about to click Submit on a Logitech mouse
//Whoa, I could post like this on Fark
///YA RLY - emorphien, on 10/12/2007, -6/+2I don't get how the Nike thing is on there. At the same time, what puts the MacBook Pro on there? It's not anything new and cool at all, it's just a good update of an existing product essentially. Along the same lines... why exactly the Treo, or that particular Garmin.
I guess in other words, since i'm not a self congratulating mac-fanboy, and because I don't get so excited by electronics (unless they are truly unique or do something cool), I just don't think most of that list is worth a damn. I like electronics, but very little of what is on that list hits gadget of the year for me. - Boondoggle, on 10/12/2007, -5/+1Or else what?
- tthomas1529, on 10/12/2007, -5/+1apples, i hate apples. all peely and crunchy and stuff.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -5/+1what a joke article. reminds me of how computer shopper sold out.
- mikev, on 10/12/2007, -7/+2Shut up bitch, start replying to the right comment when you comment, or else.
- Tunguska, on 10/12/2007, -7/+2Wow! This slightly faster chip makes it easy to watch the movies on Quicktime that I've always had problems with. Thanks MacBook Pro!
- m00dy, on 10/12/2007, -7/+2shut up bitch, start complaining when you actually own one, and have used it
- NewChar, on 10/12/2007, -8/+1No pics?
- alexandreracine, on 10/12/2007, -11/+3Bury, because link, not going to the actual article.
- DanteDefiance, on 10/12/2007, -10/+2The list contains to Apple products, yet they're both getting whipped by a gaming system that cost quarter the price and uses older technology.
GAMERS UNITE! - Sandkat, on 10/12/2007, -12/+3Oh noes! Apple fanboys VS Nintendo fanboys! I think the universe might collapse.
- moolcool, on 10/12/2007, -12/+2how much did apple and logitech pay to get on this list? seriously the products on that weren't even that good. The macbook pro had recalls for petes sake! Why isnt there a laptop that dosent explode on the list.
- Tmoney645, on 10/12/2007, -15/+4Two in the pink and one in the stink?
