Sure, particularly if you're using a laptop. - roustk, on 10/12/2007, -3/+27This tool is useful and I was close post a new dig myself:
http://switchersblog.com/articles/2006/10/30/easy-get-more-disk-space-with-monolingual
But then I found that it was done already two months ago (1,749 diggs):
http://digg.com/software/Save_gigs_of_data_by_removing_unnecessary_language_files_from_your_mac - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -5/+28That reminds me of a joke:
Q: What do you call someone who speaks three languages?
A: Trilingual.
Q: What do you call someone who speaks two languages?
A: Bilingual.
Q: What do you call someone who speaks one language?
A: American. - val1984, on 10/12/2007, -5/+28Don't be surprised if your MacBook Pro is no longer able to run PPC apps after using MonoLingual.
I prefer Delocalize which doesn't delete Rosetta :

You can fit an awful lot of porn in 2.2 GB, so I'd say yes. - dmoney06, on 10/12/2007, -5/+19hammydude:
where the ***** is the sub in that? - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+12Actually there is a clear warning in the article about what to do and what not to do. It will only delete G3, G4 and G5 architectures if you tell it to. The default settings are safe.
- threepio, on 10/12/2007, -7/+15Filthy P'tahk!
- FHKE, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10In addition, you can save up to 2.4 GB if you kill those printers' drivers which are unnecessary to you.
- jjk5, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8And if you're doing a fresh install of OS X, I believe there's the option to not install these items in the first place.
- threepio, on 10/12/2007, -5/+11If you were any other man, I would kill you where you stand!
- ifthe21stcentu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Found it.
"/Library/Printers/"
... very simple. - MacParrot, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8digg UP for the Klingon. If for nothing else because it's amusing
- Raider007, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6i tell everyone to use monolingual, just to be careful on what check boxes you use...
also, delete all the files in the printer folder in your library, that'll save 2 gigs
and delete all the garageband loops and idvd/imovie templates out of your library too, that's another 4-8 gigs.
so everything listed above is 6-10 gigs of more space - m1ss1ontomars, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Serious damage...such as...? _If_ you follow instructions, you can save a lot of hard disk space with no risk. If you don't follow instructions, then you're just dumb.
- scooterfish, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3This is only an issue if you DON'T pay attention to the options. You do have to UNcheck the different PPC platforms.
I made this mistake the first time. Next time around I made sure to uncheck everything and place a check in the 64-bit platforms.... - MacParrot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Removing all the themes in iLife and loops from GarageBand also makes them non-functional. There are ways to move them to another drive (external for laptops of course), but that also slows down the programs affected. It also makes it difficult for upgrades later. If you're so tight for space that you need to move or delete stuff for 2 to 4 Gb, maybe you should get a bigger drive.

In Europe that would be German :) .. or french... - osbjmg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3"in a day of $0.10 gigabytes, is this really necessary?" - sure, but Apple also didn't charge me less than $8 for my disk.
- jvicinanza, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2How many time do you have to re-install Windows a month?
- Rageous, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I would never trust a program to externally do this. Pretty much since I started using Mac, I start every system with a fresh install of the OS, omitting the language packs and printer drivers. It saved me at least 3 gig as far back as Jaguar, and nearly 4 in Tiger.
- turbofan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2this is at least the fourth time Monolingual has been submitted to digg.. maybe people suffer from short term digg memory?
- trunkster, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5Being a Windows user, I am in a habit of reinstalling the operating system when I get a computer so I can install what I want onto the machine. Not an issue if you do that. (Yes I use both Windows and Mac)
- ifthe21stcentu, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4"However, you should not strip the System frameworks if you want to use Rosetta."
Well... SOMETHING isn't smart enough... - ThinkBox, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5Or you could just access the files and manually delete them..... like mentioned in the couple other digg front page articles on this topic.
- fak3r, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2One thing I've learned, never go with the default install. Even in OS X you have a chance to 'customize' before it kicks off the install (don't blink, you'll miss it) and I always take out all of the other lang packs, as well as the tons of printer drivers. Yes, I keep the one I need, but if I ever need more, I'll install them. 2Gig is not a surprise, I suspect it's even more when you consider the print drivers.
So, backup your stuff and reinstall...now! - negrospiritual, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I had *severe* problems on multiple macs after removing architectures. DO NOT REMOVE ARCHITECTURES. Save yourself a lot of hassle and only use the language removal feature.
- WhiplashVIII, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Got back 2.5GB with this, thanks!
- FHKE, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Sorry. It should be 2.1GB instead of 2.4GB. :P
Printer Drivers: 2.1GB
Localization: 1.0GB
The core part component of OS X(Essential System Software) is only 2.5GB!
A screenshot that I created few months ago (Tiger):
http://i11.tinypic.com/4hhrptj.jpg - iMatt711, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2i just skip languages during install, apart from the 2 gigs i can spare it saves the hour that i cant.

"I am in a habit of reinstalling the operating system when I get a computer so I can install what I want onto the machine"
He's not talking about repeated re-installs, he's talking about eliminating all the extra crap that comes on the PC when you buy it. Before OS X, I used to do that as well.
I've been a Mac user since the 80's. I have three Macs and an HP laptop. I've had the HP laptop since February of 2005 and I have had zero problems with and I have never had to reinstall Windows XP. Just FYI. - Sblader5, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3how many times has this been on the frontpage?
- miken32, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Something to note is that you have to do each tab separately. I went through and clicked the button while I was on the Architecture tab, only removing 330 MB. And I'm 'WTF is this 2.2 GB they're talking about?' Then I tried it again from the Languages tab, and it's going nuts as I speak wiping out hundreds of megs!
- samuelcotterall, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I bought a second hand MacMini G4 (40GB) and I spent hours trying to recover the hard disk space. It seems that the previous owner left a few GB of movies and kids games on the disk. Still, with all of these deleted I can't how much space OSX takes up.
I'll be giving this a shot tonight. - whereswaldo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Serious damage as in, you can prevent yourself from running any PowerPC Apps (ie Microsoft Office, Adobe Products) with the simple click of a button. No warnings besides a small FAQ on the website. BE SURE TO DESELECT EVERY ARCHITECTURE OPTION. I blew it away and now I have a days worth of restoring to do.
- OrangeTide, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1nuking the vendor supplied drivers (which are rather unstable on both PC and Mac) and opting for postscript printing to a real printer seems to work out well for me. I normally use Ethernet based printers (either through print sharing or using an actual print server) since it makes sense to share a printer when you have more than one computer.
The gimp-print drivers (which have been bundled with the last few version of OSX) are a lot smaller than the "standard" print drivers, and seem more stable. You could also just install CUPS using fink or darwinports. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This is a great app. It has been around for some time. 2.2gb is a stretch, but I saved over 1GB on my mac mini.
zforrester is off base with his warning, I have used it without any problems. - 303nate, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This is such a great piece of software! It saved about 2GB on my iBook. Thanks for bringing it to my attention!
- devindotcom, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Gee, I wonder how this poster managed to miss that? Doyeeee
- m1ss1ontomars, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Or...you could just use the de-localizing functions of Monolingual instead of using the universal binary stripping function.
- gunit99, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1You can also do this all by yourself when you install. Hit the "Customize" or "Custom install" (or something like that) button during the installation process, and you can elect not to install any of the foreign languages, printer drivers you don't want etc. I've been doing this for years...
- mentat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I saved about 5 GB on my iBook G4 by stripping out G4, G4(64), Intel, and Intel 64 binaries, in addition to the majority of the languages (I kept the ones I know my friends speak, because I know they have fun with the localizations, and of course, Klingon)
You're not going to save huge dramatic amounts on programs that are stock on Mac OS X, but once you start installing tons of stuff, you'll notice a difference. Again: be careful. As far as going with the Intel boxes, good luck, because you'll never quite know which binaries that program has. "It's kinda old, so maybe it only has G4 bins in it... or perhaps G3?" - Kanaka, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Old news but still useful. Be very careful when using this though or you could render you mac useless
- mentat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Likely reinstall and archive. That seems like the best option, except you'd also have to go in and clear out most of your applications too. If you had a PowerPC-Only App, and you obliterated the PPC bins out of it, you'll have to reinstall those too. All in all, it seems like it would be something of a mess.
- SVPirate, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1You Really ought to do what I always do when I get a new machine from Apple. I don't boot it up and go through the wlecome setup like your supposed to, I boot it from the Restore CD/DVD and wipe the disk, do a custom install of OS X and UNCHECK allthat crap so it never gets installed to start with (as well as the unecessary 'free' apps you get lumbered with). Worked a treat on my iMac G4.
OK granted this is something someone with years of bitter experience and with over 30 Mac OS X installs to his name would know, not necessarily someone new to the OS/platform, but it's safer than a third party util, even if it is well written. I've always been a bit weary of things like that.
Still it illustrates a point, so it gets a digg :o) - pixelpimp, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1So if I did nuke the PPC stuff on my Mac pro, what do I do to get it back, Reinstall and Archive?
- mentat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1As far as the BSD Subsystem, and the X11 system, install them when you need them. Your average user isn't going to be bothered with the Terminal, and it's unlikely they'd need X11 for anything other than GIMP or OpenOffice.
- porkstacker, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"Essentially what it does is remove all of the language packs that you will never use (Swahili anyone?)"
Actually, Kiswahili is my wife's native language. I think I will set her MacMini's language to Swahili one day just to see if she notices. - mentat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It's probably a lot of sub-system stuff. Wipe and install, you'll find you have more disk space free than you expect. I never keep the original data on my second hand hard disks.
- Knoxious, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3This tip was great when I used it a few months ago (the first time it appeared here). Cleared up quite a bit of space and didn't cause any problems with the OS at all.
Just be sure to have a back up before you start. If you read the thread from a few months ago it tells you some horror stories of deleting the "English" part of it. Really hard to get that back without a back up. -
