- lippyjka, on 10/11/2007, -2/+30I like how they labeled the quoted battery life as "imaginary battery life"
- danny951, on 10/11/2007, -3/+20Yes, and a few of the "Cons" they listed at the end of the article got me a bit, such as, "Both SO-DIMM slots occupied in default configuration" and "Meager software bundle". I guess me being all fanboyish and all, see, I would have listed a couple of Pros that went something like "2GB of RAM Standard", and "Excellent software bundle with iLife". I guess people are expecting to see a single 2GB RAM module (read: wasted costs and no dual channel memory standard), and Final Cut Studio shipping for free with all new Pro Mac purchases.
/rolls eyes. - gjscds, on 10/11/2007, -5/+20People can digg sweintraub down, but he's got a point. I've got a 17" Core Duo, and the thing is like a surfboard. It's just too damn big for easy transport. Really more of a desktop replacement than a laptop.

This review wasn't so bad, but I really hate reviews (like in pcmag/pcworld) where they pick the stupidest things to be comment about...
"Pro: Includes 90 Days Anti-Virus" (when they really should be recommending free ones like AVG instead of bloated trialware)
"Con: Doesn't come with a printer" (wtf... who cares... and the same magazine mentions later how crappy bundled printers are anyhow) - randomgeek, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6I don't get it. You're saying it's too big? You're essentially carrying around a 17" LCD monitor, there is only so small it can be made and still be 17 inches...
- gnomon, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5Better read up on your LCD panel technologies. 8 bits per sub-pixel (RGB). That's 24 bits, which is what you're used to (32 bit color is 24 bits + 8 bits alpha, not actually 32 bits)
- danny951, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5I believe the benefit is that in dual channel mode, the memory is essentially running at twice the clock speed, making it a 1.33GHz memory controller, which should keep the CPU / FSB happy. Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe this is how it works.
- Tippis, on 10/11/2007, -2/+7Oh, don't worry... They've already moved to HDCP-compliant graphics cards and to full-HD resolutions. Now, they just have to slap HDCP controls into Leopard, and they're good to go for rolling out BluRay support...
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -1/+6This review is a little whack. I just bought a 15" MBP 2 days ago and although it has 800Mhz front side bus speeds, it ships with 667Mhz memory. Apparently, the memory controller is limited to 667Mhz, so even with the faster ram, it'd be clocked-down, thus making this statement null
"If you focus merely on the clock speed, the difference between the Rev. B and Rev. C machines is truly miniscule. After all, we're talking about a 70MHz speed bump. However, the performance gains with the Rev. C MacBook Pro belie the modest megahertz burp, due in no small part to its 800MHz front-side bus."
I will, however, say that the LED Backlit screen on the 15" is really really bright and crisp. - rauz, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5It seems it's more up to Nvidia but I basically agree.
- Bootes, on 10/11/2007, -1/+6Personally I hate having ports on the back. A laptop is moved constantly, so things aren't left plugged in all the time. It's much more annoying to plug things into the back than the sides.
- timusca, on 10/11/2007, -3/+7I about choked on my cookie when I read that!
- thalassicus, on 10/11/2007, -1/+5I love my 1920x1200 sony screen and the lack of that resolution was the major factor preventing me from getting a mac to dual boot. Still, I don't understand why they hinge the lid the way they do which doesn't allow for any connections on the back of the machine. My sony has ethernet, usb and power all out of sight on the back of the machine (just the firewire is on the side when I need to use it) which looks so much more elegant to me. Apple is so focused on design, I don't get why they wouldn't like to minimize all that clutter.
Still, it looks like the thinnest, feature rich high end 17" so I'm probably gonna get it (and then blu-ray will probably be announced 36 days later). - c5kirk, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Have to agree... I think that having ports in the back looks better but I find having them on the side much more convenient.
- durangotang, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4I hope Apple resolves the Open GL issue with the new cards. Driver updates perhaps.
- c5kirk, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3mach1andy,
Don't forget... the memory is dual-channel (I believe) which means that it's actually still the FSB that is the limiting factor, not the memory speed. - zdiggler, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3Wow.. Com'on fan boys digg this story!
I guess the new ones are not that great on this review eh? - rickcarson, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Wow. Just wow. WoW is a BLIZZARD game.
BLIZZARD have faithfully supported Mac gaming for _years_. The original Diablo is Mac compatible. Diablo II is Mac compatible. Starcraft, Broodwars, Warcraft 3 and Frozen Throne...
all Mac compatible.
But wait. Get this. This is how awesome BLIZZARD are. When I switched from PC to Mac I didn't need to buy new 'Mac versions'... because they ship on the _same frickin' disk_ as the PC version.
How cool is that? From the Mac gamers point of view, BLIZZARD are the genuine glass of ice water in hell. :D - crimson117, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3Rats... I was hoping I could finally get a mac laptop for gaming. I'll wait until nVidia tweaks the drivers. I don't want to have to use bootcamp and winxp for playing WoW - if I'm going to pay for a mac, I want to use mac os whenever I alt-tab out of the game.
I mean... I'm sure this would be very capable for wow, especially the middle 15.4" model which I'd most likely get, but it's a downer that performance isn't quite up to speed. - danny951, on 10/11/2007, -4/+5Well, hopefully you won't be carrying it around with it wedged between your arm and ribcage. Most cases these days (though not all) typically have handles on them. So no, it's not like carrying around a surfboard. ;) Once you set it on a desk and begin working, that extra space is very nice to have, though I would guess most people who buy any 17" laptop don't take it with them very often. It truly is a desktop replacement, that can be taken with you from time to time.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1/yawn
- sweintraub, on 10/11/2007, -28/+28Has anyone ever used one of those 17"ers? It is like carrying around a surf board...and no Blue Ray or HD-DVD support? I can't wait for mine to get here!
- kethraal, on 10/11/2007, -2/+1" 8-bit LCD instead of the 6-bit garbage in previous MBP models. Let me know if/when they fix that."
8-bit would be 256 colours..... 6-bit would be 64 colours.
Somehow, I think the displays are a little better than that ;-) - timlopez, on 10/11/2007, -4/+2@sweintraub
I dare you to show me a surf board that can play HD-DVD or Blu-Ray.
/off topic - sparr, on 10/11/2007, -3/+0The only improvement I care about is an 8-bit LCD instead of the 6-bit garbage in previous MBP models. Let me know if/when they fix that.
- Topher06, on 10/11/2007, -9/+5I am dissapointed about the lack of an HDMI connector. Yes, you can easily do DVI to HDMI, but that carries no sound. Since Apple is all up on this multimedia computer kick, then why not offer a braindead connector to easily connect a MacBook to HDTV including sound.
Its almost like Apple purposely sabotages certain products to ensure sales of other products. A MacBook with HDMI would pretty much trump the AppleTV, so therefore they refuse to offer HDMI connectors on a MacBook.
BTW, anybody know which camp Apple supports? Blu-Ray or HD-DVD? Me thinks its the opposite of Microsoft, meaning Blu-ray. Being Apple, they will wait until one format ranks supreme, come out with a Mac that supports it, then claim they were responsible for the format succeeding. In any case, Apple doesn't seem to support any next-gen DVD format as they see fit not to offer it on any product. - bobcrotch, on 10/11/2007, -7/+3Yes there are reasons why I still love my G4 1.3 powerbook
- icon7, on 10/11/2007, -7/+2wonder if kevin rose will get one..
- netburnr, on 10/11/2007, -17/+8Damn good review!
I'm also waiting for mine, looks like its Leaving China now.... Damn Juniper Credit card got all screwed up and caused my laptop to not ship until like 3 days later :-(
