- noahhoward, on 10/12/2007, -3/+29You're limiting yourself to the present. More space = more possibilities.
- CapeKid, on 10/12/2007, -0/+23@PARAPA
Once video starts being moved onto mp3 players space becomes a necessity. I regularly fill up my 30GB Creative Zen because of all the video I have on there. - coldphoenix, on 10/12/2007, -0/+14It doesn't necessarily equate to MORE media, you can use that extra space for higher quality media files.
- fugeelama, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14@johntp
Considering the human body has about 7*10^27 atoms, you must have a small weiner. - zioxide, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11The 4G iPod supported both USB and firewire. They should have just kept it that way.
- baldr, on 10/12/2007, -13/+24@johntp
I'm pretty sure that could be done with less than 1 KB
No one wants that much music on their ipod. The only possible use of 120 GB is hours and hours of ipod porn. - djSyndrome, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10"Isn't increasing the size of the screen a bit contradictive of the "portable" media giant's mantra of smallest is best."
Who said anything about increasing the case size? A touchscreen interface can be used instead of making the whole unit bigger. And what do you know - Apple already has one in the bag with the iPhone. - mraustin1337, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8@coldphoenix2:
Walmart does not use high quality touch screens on their photo printing service.
Quality touch screens do not "tarnish" -- at least not quickly. - geminitojanus, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9The reason Firewire was originally included was to chain iPod users to Macs (all Macs of the time had Firewire ports). Nowadays, virtually no PCs ship with Firewire, but every single one of them has at least 2 USB2 ports. Firewire lost the general peripherals game, plain and simple, even if it is a superior protocol; It was always more expensive (the chips alone were probably the biggest motivating factor to drop Firewire).
So yeah, Apple's not bringing back Firewire any time soon (read: ever). Simple economic forces. - TroubleInMind, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10"640K of RAM should be enough for anybody"
- attributed to Bill Gates, 1981, subsequenly denied that he ever said that in 1996 - Dotcommer, on 10/12/2007, -6/+12Screw all that. I just want apple to bring back firewire support for their ipods. The stupidest thing I've ever seen them do to the ipod was remove firewire support. And no, USB is not faster than firewire. It is on paper, but its not in actual use.
- brstilson, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7@geminitojanus
The reason the original iPods were shipped with Firewire is because the USB specification was still at 1.1. Firewire was a much faster protocol (400 Mbit/s as opposed to 12 Mbit/s). Using the faster Firewire connection, users could load a 5 GB iPod with 1,000 songs in about 10 minutes. Have you ever synced 1000 songs to an iPod via USB 1.1? I have, and it takes hours. The use of firewire didn't lock the devices into Macs, the software did. They were only available for Mac until the Apple released the USB and Firewire compatible version for PC. By this time, USB had caught up and is now slightly faster (480 Mbit/s) than Firewire. - timfitz99, on 10/12/2007, -4/+10My 60 gb ipod is way too small... i have another 10 gigs of music that won't fit, and of course, no room for video. I'd definitely upgrade to a 120gb.
- 1021, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9why is no one complaining about flash drives not being in iPod's future. I know cost has a lot to do with it but I would buy a more expensive flash player any day as compared to an even more headache-prone 120 gb fork and platter job which constantly rattles tattles and hangs (due to it's size and use).
- Sneakydave, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6I have no idea why everyones saying no one will fill 120gb. My 80gb is filled entirely with tracks and I could happily fill a couple more of them. Even if you don't have enough mp3's I know an awful lot of people who could fill it with 4000 FLAC encoded tracks and be happy with that.
Give it a few years and people will be laughing at you lot. You can never have enough storage. - weijia, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Honestly, I could and would use that much space on an iPod. Lossless music for my audiophile ears and seamless videos ripped at ultra-high quality so it doesn't artifact like crazy during chase scenes, sounds like paradise.
- DEIx15x8, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Who said you had to buy it? It's not like Apple is suddenly going to go to a single 120 gb version ipod
- fartingbob, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5WSgeek, thats the most stupid thing ive heard on digg for at least 20 minutes. Companies as a whole like making money. They also generally stick to a few things they are good at.
Samsung are good at making high capacity drives. I dont think they are as good at music codecs and compression. And last time i checked, there isnt billions of dollars in that business plan.
120GB's is nice, really be entering the stage where any more is just for video, even the biggest audiophiles wouldnt be able to fill that much (and those people DONT use mp3 players as a general rule). And mobile video isnt as easy to get used to as music. - brstilson, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6@PARAPA
Your 60 GB iPod will not magically stop working if a better one comes out. If that were true, than it already would have with the release of the 80 GB iPod several months ago. I never understand this obsession people have to owning the latest and greatest. When you buy a computer, you expect it to be outdated within weeks. It doesn't mean that it won't still do what you need it to do, just that something better is out there. - mastercheif, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4USB 2.0 is NOT faster than Firewire. Get that out of your heads. USB will burst for a couble of seconds, but Firewire is pretty sustainable at 400mbps. The problem with Firewire is that it is too expenive, there wasn't much support, and it creates confusion. Also, Firewire vs USB 2.0 debate on an iPod is useless because the hard drives cant even get anywhere near 400mbps transfer speed anyway.
- oddball, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4They play video now too.....
- djSyndrome, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I'm sure Apple's just smarting at your clever remark.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I can finally store my entire library...amen
- Hercules, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Dugg for the Jersey girls comment. Coming from a New Jerseyan :D
- mds76, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3The future is now! Soon every American home will integrate their television, phone and computer. You'll be able to visit the Louvre on one channel, or watch female wrestling on another. You can do your shopping at home, or play Mortal Kombat with a friend from Vietnam. There's no end to the possibilities!
- anonydigg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2FLAC on iPod? I don't think you can do that without another firmware. But Apple Lossless will do.
- noahhoward, on 10/12/2007, -1/+31021, from what I have seen recently, micro hard drives are a hell of a lot faster than flash drives.
- steven401, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Creative's line of MP3 players are nice but they're meant to be portable, 4.3" screen?
- smackhero, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2same as a psp. but how much does it cost? personally, i think a 4" screen is the minimum for a device meant for video playback.
- wenis, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3where can i put my order in for the 120 gb ipod?
i ran out of space on my 80 a week ago(all music deleted all the videos). - smackhero, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1they could use a slide-phone design to have the screen much bigger on the outside, and hide the button interface when not in use. although, personally, i think as a general-purpose portable entertainment device, the psp is far superior: sd card slot, wifi (stream video/music, web browsing, etc.), all the capabilities of a video ipod, and plays games from a variety of platforms.
i want my portable mp3 player to be as small and compact as possible--the first generation ipod nanos were perfect (aside from the lack of an sd memory slot). if i wanted a portable device that plays videos also, i'd just use my psp as it's got a much bigger screen, built in speakers, and a bunch of other entertainment features that the video ipod lacks--plus it's cheaper. - mitrovarr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@smackhero
Until SD cards grow in capacity, they're going to be pretty small in comparison to a micro hard drive. The biggest SDHC card you could find right now would be 8 gb, which is pretty small in comparison to the iPod's hard drive. Plus, an SD slot isn't that small - it'd be challenging to fit that inside. More likely you'd get a micro SD slot (which is what mp3 players that have expansion slots, like the Sansa, typically use), and those max out at 2gb right now.
Also, it's a little bit difficult for mp3 players to merge storage seamlessly - the Sansa, which has a MicroSD slot, is always having issues in the firmware with using them. Either videos don't work, or playlists, or it affects the player as a whole in some way, or whatever. It's buggy. I have no doubt it can be done, it's just not as trivial as it appears to be.
It might be more practical up the road when flash grows in capacity some more. - coldphoenix, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4I dont know about you, but every touch screen I've ever seen, always ends up getting tarnished (not good for video viewing purposes) from all the you know, touching.
- smackhero, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1microdrives don't provide much of a speed advantage over flash drives when it comes to mp3 or video playback. plus, if ipods had an sd slot like my psp, you wouldn't need to buy a whole new ipod to increase storage. it'd also be more convenient to be able to swap out sd cards rather than have to erase data on your ipod to make room for other media content.
- wush, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1it already is - 111 is the capacity in gibibytes
- zos13, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1120GB iPods is possible in the future, but probably not likely in the short term. All you have to do is see that there has been a 100GB drive out for a while and Apple is still using the 80GB in its top end model. I think they waited quite some time before moving up to 80GB from 60 as well. Possibly because of the higher cost when the new drives come out.
- mikeazorin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The ACTUAL reason there's no firewire support is because it requires a large chip in the iPod, and all the iPods now would have to fatten up to fit that chip in them. Apple could have researched making this chip smaller, but as was said previously, it's a dying format.
- noahhoward, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@ smackhero
That may be true, my experience was file transfer, and using them for mini servers. One thing I did notice was that micro hard drives are usually much cheaper than their flash based counterparts. Usually around $12 per GB for flash and only $1 per GB for a micro hard disk. - Topher06, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Still using a 30gb version, and having a hard time filling it. Not that I don't like music, but my music tends to have a half-life, and I eventually nuke it when I get tired of it. Pretty much got rid of the 80's, slowly but surely purging the 90's.
Anyways it doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out Apple will have a new version out with 120gb at some point, Apple has pretty much adopted the highest capacity availble for these small hard drives as they become available, Apple's just waiting to get some discount deal. Dugg down for being obvious, but I think we need a DUH category. - jnajera, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Nah, more like 111GB iPods. Can a GB by HDD manufactures actually be a Gigabyte in size.... some can dream.
- standsolid, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Answer?
Probably, eventually. - specialK16, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0C'mon people, I went from 5GB to 80GB of music in less than a year. Sure as hell space is needed.
- person425, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1It will be funny once all these neighboring algorithms (last.fm etc) get working nicely with wireless devices, making any storage space on a mobile device totally obsolete :-p Might kill a lot of bees though
- khag7, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1I'm a Pennsylvanian but I go to college with about 1/3rd of the people here being Jersey girls, so I can appreciate this. They're annoying as all hell.
