- pxa270, on 05/27/2008, -2/+51Don't digg this just because it has the hip MacBook Air in the title. This has just been on the frontpage without the stupid MBA spin:
http://digg.com/hardware/Samsung_Announces_New_256 ...
They're using standard notebook HDD form factors with a standard SATA interface, so it can go in almost _any_ current or future notebook. (But ironically not in the current MBA, which uses a PATA interface..) - inactive, on 05/27/2008, -1/+48Will cost more than the Macbook Air though.
- mojonandha, on 05/27/2008, -3/+40You can upgrade the Macbook Air to the 256GB SSD for another 9,999$. That must be fun.
- jeriqo, on 05/27/2008, -2/+24"Samsung intros 256GB SSD that may reach MacBook Air"
The MacBook Air is actually the only Apple laptop that can not use this drive, since it has PATA/zif connectors, to gain space. - Fullmoon, on 05/27/2008, -2/+17click click CLICK vooooooooo k-rrrrrrrrrr
- benologist, on 05/27/2008, -3/+16Wow... who would have thought the MacBook Air might in the future use bigger SSD drives!
- inactive, on 05/27/2008, -2/+14It's a sad day when when an Apple will cost more than a Honda...
- cgomez, on 05/27/2008, -0/+11Learn the difference between RAM (volatile memory) and NAND Flash (non-volatile memory).
- kkiran, on 05/27/2008, -2/+12To the tune of $2500 dollars in the current scenario for the SSD alone!
- jamesdew, on 05/27/2008, -0/+10well let's just give up then
- inactive, on 05/27/2008, -14/+23My wife will never find my multi-gigabyte collection of porn now!
That's right...I'm mobile you frigid bitch! - AgmLauncher, on 05/27/2008, -6/+15Anyone else not impressed with SSD performance? If you can read/write to RAM at over 5 GIGS/second, why is SSD measuring read/write speed in the MEGs?
I realize that SSD is faster than HDD (unless we're talking 15,000 RPM fiber channel scsi), but it should theoretically be TRASHING physical disk speeds, and it's not. - diablozx9, on 05/27/2008, -0/+7Why make these fancy Calculators when my slide rule and abacus
work just fine. - inactive, on 05/27/2008, -2/+9Size. More Reliable. Faster.
- inactive, on 05/27/2008, -2/+9Macbook pro too pls :)
- justz00t, on 05/27/2008, -0/+6That is the most painful noise known to man.
- mikephimikephi, on 05/27/2008, -1/+7Thats what she said.
Hiiii-yoooooo - stockjones, on 05/27/2008, -0/+5SSD will be huge when its common place. So much better than disc drives.
- HyperJack, on 05/27/2008, -1/+6Worse than a dial-up modem?
- init100, on 05/27/2008, -0/+4Or maybe people aren't buying them since they still have so low capacities?
- Dylson, on 05/27/2008, -0/+4How much? *cowers
- feliks2, on 05/27/2008, -0/+4That is no longer known to man, I think. Dial-up, I mean.
- init100, on 05/27/2008, -0/+3"I realize that SSD is faster than HDD (unless we're talking 15,000 RPM fiber channel scsi)"
SSDs are several orders of magnitude faster in seek times than even the 15K RPM FC disks, since they almost don't have any. Technically they shouldn't have any, since they have no physical read/write heads that have to be moved, but SSD manufacturers still usually specify 0.1ms as seek time. - Kelmon, on 05/27/2008, -1/+4The reliability point has yet to be proven, and that's one reason I'm not touching the technology yet. Sure, there's no moving parts, but I want to see how well one of these things lasts relative to magnetic media before I pay a premium.
- pxa270, on 05/27/2008, -0/+3Sure, but the current MBA only has the PATA connector, so you can forget about upgrading the current model down the line, unless you also replace the logic board. Using the dead end PATA in the current version was just stupid. But then again, MBA buyers should know that they're buying a mostly-disposable computer anyway.
- inactive, on 05/27/2008, -3/+6wait wait wait - always wait until this technology matures before adopting it in mainstream. i'd rather spend the same amount of money on gas as it is priced now, than a hard drive.
- init100, on 05/27/2008, -0/+3"They're using standard notebook HDD form factors with a standard SATA interface, so it can go in almost _any_ current or future notebook."
Laptops are not the only users of 2.5" hard drives. The form factor is also common in blade servers. - jakem1, on 05/27/2008, -0/+3Samsung is Korean.
- inactive, on 05/27/2008, -0/+3People also buy macs for the names too.
You think anyone with common sense would throw there money away if they saw the abysmal mac specs and then the price?
Mac fanboys digg me down. - jakem1, on 05/27/2008, -0/+3Improved read speed, reduced power requirements, no moving parts to break.
- sinurgy, on 05/27/2008, -2/+5Buried the "MBA" one as spam, dugg up the article without the spin!
- LeonidasStokely, on 05/27/2008, -2/+5I was surprised to see this exact same article on the front page AGAIN after just a few days. I suppose some diggers have social lives an only Digg when there's work to be done.
- titlesaysitall, on 05/27/2008, -3/+5And you know what else is awesome too? Evidently, according to this article, PATA connectors will work with SATA connectors!
- ralphthemagi, on 05/27/2008, -5/+7The only way this will reach a MacBook Air is if it's heavily subsidized by Apple or Samsung, and I'm not sure why either company would do that.
On a different note though, it's pretty amazing we are already at 256GB in a 1.8" form factor. Just a matter of time now before SSDs completely replace HDDs. - i4ybrid, on 05/27/2008, -2/+4People don't design SSDs for the sole purpose of the putting them in the MacBook Air.
- jakem1, on 05/27/2008, -0/+2That's not a very good argument. As Samsung don't do much with processors or interfaces I think we can let them concentrate on SSDs while someone else works on the other things you find important. Also, SSDs do provide performance improvements over HDDs (especially notebook HDDs) so your argument is even more redundant.
- zedpudding, on 05/27/2008, -1/+3so the question is why do you think Apple's Air is so expensive when its actually cheaper than a comparable Sony and has a faster Intel processor?
- jakem1, on 05/27/2008, -0/+2Exactly!!! It always amazes me the way these sort of articles end up on Digg with an Apple spin. Chances are these will end up in another brand of laptop long before Apple decides to include them. It's not as if Apple were the first to use SSDs people.
- KMartSheriff, on 05/27/2008, -0/+2Or maybe people aren't buying them since they still cost $2,500?
- KMartSheriff, on 05/27/2008, -0/+2An EeePC? How about saving that money to buy something that can do more than surf the internet or run terminal?
- KMartSheriff, on 05/27/2008, -0/+1Both your comment and the parent comment contain vast amounts of fail.
- KMartSheriff, on 05/27/2008, -0/+1Just like with ALL technology, it will get faster. They'll come up with some way to increase speeds and call give it some fancy title like "SSD with Speed Max" or something. Just give it time, things will improve dramatically and you'll be satisfied. SSD's are the future (that and 64-bit OS's).
- KMartSheriff, on 05/27/2008, -0/+1I'm pretty sure they actually last a lot longer than your typical HDD. But it would be retarded to buy one of these things now as it stands anyway (at least until the price becomes reasonable).
- KMartSheriff, on 05/27/2008, -0/+1Seriously. Improvement is totally overrated. We should just stop improving things for like 5 years. My Pentium 4 is just fine. /sarcasm
- jonshipman, on 05/27/2008, -0/+1I remember a time when the cheapest Apple cost more than a Honda.
- Kazaki, on 05/28/2008, -0/+1...What? You just told me to "save my money" and get an EeePC "if you need a bit more power" in a topic that, when placed in context, contrasts against the MacBook Air.
It's already been established the MacBook Air is equal to the down-payment of a car, and it's definitely more powerful then the EeePC's Celeron and 512MB RAM.
I'm less inclined to yell at you and far more curious to understand where the hell this statement came from. - yugiohdan6, on 05/29/2008, -0/+1apple should put this in the ipod classic, a 256GB iPod (largest yet) that won't break when you drop it (constantly), jog, etc
- ozziek, on 02/23/2009, -0/+1Running one now in a Vaio SZ7 - amazing
