- PenguinChaser, on 03/14/2009, -4/+46That's great and all, but what about copy and paste?
- TimDigg, on 03/14/2009, -4/+35Jim Cramer is that you?
- Wander2000, on 03/14/2009, -0/+31Just what customers have been asking for - more expensive software, I can't wait.
- BrendanSheehan, on 03/14/2009, -4/+23Premium section will be for apps costing $9.99 or more. Nothing more than a marketing thing.
- Awezing, on 03/14/2009, -1/+14Nothing's impossible to hack.
- rdas7, on 03/14/2009, -7/+19The story is half right. The so called "premium" App Store won't just be for apps that are priced higher. It will be for more elaborate apps for the 10" iPhone that will bridge the functionality between mobile and desktop. Rather than simple "widget"-type apps (as are the majority of iPhone applications, designed to be used while on the move), these apps will be more elaborate programs, and thus reside in their own storefront to distinguish them from iPhone/iPod touch apps, just as these apps are distinguished from desktop applications.
Apple understand that in order to own the tablet/netbook market, they cannot do it alone. By providing the hardware, and designing the software platform, and then handing it over to developers to grow (like they did to an extent with iPhone + AppStore), they will ensure iPhone OS to be the de facto standard for mobile development. Windows Mobile, Symbian and Android are going to have to do a lot of catching up.
In volleyball, this would be called a spike. - ironiridis, on 03/14/2009, -1/+11@MrViklund: What the hell is your problem? Did two of your friends die jailbreaking their iPhones or what?
- ninerskeet, on 03/14/2009, -0/+10I've played countless numbers of games on the iPhone. None of them so far deserve a price tag of more than $5. They better up the ante for the premium stuff.
- eldridgea, on 03/14/2009, -0/+9That'll be in the premier store.
- damntourists, on 03/14/2009, -0/+8if i'm paying more than $9.99 for one of these downloadable apps, it better do some amazing *****.
- andycr512, on 03/14/2009, -0/+8A lot of them are -worth- $10 which aren't that much, just because the price expectation is so low. Look at the Windows Mobile world, and you end up with trivial applications like Pocket Player, which is $20 and nowhere near worth that much, and applications like Kinoma, which is $30 and worth it but would be slaughtered at that price on the iPhone. The price expectation varies greatly from platform to platform.
- cowguin, on 03/14/2009, -0/+7I'm still waiting for: Annnnnnd your iphone is now Daft Punk.
- beerbarron, on 03/14/2009, -0/+6I love the concept of this, I dont mind spending money on an app that is polished, it would probably also mean that turn by turn GPS apps may start coming (wishful thinking)
- ofenza, on 03/14/2009, -0/+6And that is why they registered OS X without Mac. Mac OS X, iPhone OS X, "iTablet" OS X.
- mtdna, on 03/15/2009, -0/+5If it's like the rest of the App store, it'll be:
41% To-Do lists
63% Restaurant finders
30% Tip calculators
11% Sudoku puzzles
29% Foreign-language dictionaries
18% Dumb-ass Guitar Hero knock-offs.
...except really fancy.
Actually, I guess I could use a fancy Premium App to double-check those percentages I just listed... - sixthree, on 03/14/2009, -0/+5They've actually been asking for a method to weed out the thousands of crap apps. This is a good start.
- MrViklund, on 03/14/2009, -4/+9volleyball sux
- leemanuf, on 03/14/2009, -1/+5or they just could have made a search function which allowed you to see only apps over 10 bucks...but your way sounds easier!
- MtheoryX, on 03/14/2009, -1/+4I hear the Omnifocus iPhone app is worth it.
- LukeBeaumont, on 03/15/2009, -0/+3If you jailbreak there are now turn-by-turn GPS apps.
- Scottievm, on 03/14/2009, -1/+4Yes, there are.

... - HigherLogic, on 03/15/2009, -0/+2Yeah, the App Store could use a better interface. Always wanted to sort my results further (price, release date, reviews, etc.). It's a store after all, so it should have the basic features of an ecommerce store.
Edit: But the comment below yours makes sense now why they're doing this:
http://digg.com/apple/Rumor_iPhone_to_Get_a_Premiu ... - AmazingSteve, on 03/14/2009, -6/+8We think you should get kicked off the internet but we don't see that happening either sooo....
- Georgy, on 03/14/2009, -0/+2This is a great idea, i dont think games games created by EA or Ubisoft should be stuck along with iFart.
Besides with in the premium app store we can expect a basic level of quality.
And hopefully apple will loosen restrictions in the non premium app store - Acqua206, on 03/15/2009, -2/+4Oooh, thanks for your sample size of 6(include yourself). The thousands bitching about no copy and paste are irrelevant because your parents and bro don't use it.
I have a BB and I use it all the time, YO. - Elranzer, on 03/15/2009, -0/+1IamRich?
- colonelxc, on 03/14/2009, -0/+1Turn by turn GPS is the one app I would pay for.
- Murrabbit, on 03/15/2009, -0/+1Mmm oh yeah even more elitism in my iPhone? I can hardly wait! Finaly a reason to sneer at those paupers, those pretenders and wanabees who just buy the regular apps for their iPhone!
- 7aji, on 03/15/2009, -0/+1What phone do you have, and what program do you use for a quick retouch? (I'm being serious here)
- spookyttws, on 03/14/2009, -2/+3I will tell you right now that I will never pay more than $5 for an iPhone app. Granted I pirate most of those that cost money anyway through Intallous, but I have paid for a few that I really liked. There really needs to be a demo version for all the paid apps. I always feel weird dropping even a dollar on a iPhone app no matter how good the reviews, simply because I've been burned by so many ***** apps before.

- JasonHaley, on 03/15/2009, -0/+1"Apple understand that in order to own the tablet/netbook market, they cannot do it alone."
As a regular tablet user I can assure you that charging a premium on ***** that's been around for a decade isn't much of a selling point, especially because I know Jobs will get rid of something like when he got rid of the "right click" on the mouse and "stylus, sd cards, copy/paste" on iPhones. I want more ***** for less cash, not vice versa.
And lastly, if people woke up and tried an Ubuntu netbook they'd realize that there are 5000 free apps on it there that don't require you to "upgrade for a price." - 7aji, on 03/15/2009, -0/+1If a human made it, then a human can hack it.
- BlueCadenza, on 03/15/2009, -1/+2^ I have copy and paste (and cut!) and I use it extensively on my phone. Its just stupid not to have. Making excuses that it isn't needed or that Apple is taking care of us by not putting features we don't need is just bunk.
I mainly use my smart phone for business, and I need all the features I can have. In an emergency, I've had to make a remote desktop connection to help someone with their PC. You know how stupid it would be if I had to tell them "sorry my phone can't do that, and I don't have my laptop with me, go find someone else" Or I've had to quickly resize a few pictures and touch them up before sending them to a client who needed them quickly (yes I can do photo editing on my phone). I've had to draw a quick sketch and then print it out on the spot, all from my phone. Forgot my laptop? No problem I'll just hook it up to a projector and play the powerpoint presentation I emailed out. That's the idea behind a smartphone, it can be useful in any situation once it comes up.
Its retarded to have an expensive phone (while its 200 dollars on a plan, the actual cost of the phone without subsidies is closer to 600 dollars) and not have ALL the features that smartphones are capable of today. Especially if it wants to market itself as a smartphone. - kplayr, on 03/15/2009, -0/+0That would be full of fail for customers. Just put snow leopard on it and keep it open PLEASE!!!! but that's of course not Apple's M/O, they will lock it the hell down and make people pay 9.99 for cut and paste.
- BlueCadenza, on 03/15/2009, -0/+0^ I love how PDAs have had features since 2003 that people are still being amazed at. In 2004 I had a 4GB Ipaq 4150 that was an MP3, Online streaming, Movie player, SNES NES and GBA emulator, Book reader, Excel and Word editor, Web Browser, Outlook, Photo editor, brush paint simulator, and 3d game MACHINE. Oh and of course it had copy and paste. The coolest thing ever was being able to put the SD card from my Nikon and then resize the pictures and email them.
Most fanboys wouldn't know what to do with themselves if they had these features, and yet its 2009. Is it any surprise I bought a PDA phone and not an iPhone? - SDM187, on 03/18/2009, -1/+1What about the other 137% tho...?
- JasonHaley, on 03/15/2009, -2/+2Summary: If it ain't broke don't fix it
Long version:
People don't remember using copy/paste because it's almost become an involuntary action, and one that you don't really remember. But on my PDA I know copy/paste is used all the time because I have one app (it's for SMS messages) that doesn't accept copy/paste and it pisses me off everytime I need it. And I bet if you think of all the programs where you can't use copy/paste on your computer, like some pdf files, then you'll remember how frustrated you are when you DON'T have it. I also have a "right-click" on my pda and can't remember when using it, but I know that if it went missing it would drive me nuts.
By the way, the reason I can't buy an iPhone are because of two other reasons: 1) SD cards are the shiznit. If I can upgrade a 256mb pda to 8gb (or more) with just $20 that's amazing, especially for transferring 8Gb of songs, videos and photos in less than a second from my phone to my friend's computer. 2)Touch recognition is awesome but sometimes you DO need a stylus. - Spamcan, on 03/14/2009, -2/+1Fart apps aren't in the games section of the store anyway. The real question is what makes them think people are willing to spend that much on games for the platform when $10 is too expensive for most of the ***** they have on there? Will a premium section lead to franchise titles being sold for twice as much based on name alone? I think the only reason why the iPhone can compete at all is because the games are a fraction of the price of those for the DS or PSP, it has no other advantage over those platforms and plenty of disadvantages. I'm certainly not going to be forking over $20 for a GTA title or whatnot on a device that doesn't have buttons.
- HigherLogic, on 03/14/2009, -2/+1Yeah, but not all of them are priced at $10 because they have to compete with the sub-par apps that are going for 99 cents. I've purchased many apps and games that were under $10 and would have gladly paid more for them. I certainly welcome a premium store, it'll be nice not having to wade through all the ***** apps in there.
- inactive, on 03/14/2009, -6/+5A premium fart app would be funny.
- rdas7, on 03/14/2009, -3/+2Things says hello.
- HigherLogic, on 03/15/2009, -5/+2How much does the average person _really_ use copy and paste on a phone? I asked my parents, brothers (5 of them), and sister (who all have phones with copy and paste) if they ever use it and none of them do. When I had a Blackberry, I don't recall using it either. Obviously we're not everyone, but I don't think copy-and-paste is a "must have" feature in a phone. It's a convenience, sure, but definitely not a necessity. You can certainly get by without it.
I can only think of a couple times where I would have used it, and that's when I got a link in an email or text message that the iPhone didn't recognize the whole thing. But hey, maybe I'm missing the obvious reasons for why it's so important, so for those of you who MUST have this, what kind of things are you missing out on because you don't have it? - adammharvey, on 03/14/2009, -12/+8heres an answer for you, jailbreak your phone and get hClipboard.
- NeoTechni, on 03/14/2009, -7/+3Nope.
