- Zero2aHero, on 10/11/2007, -3/+44I'm baffled by the "only" part of the title. $30 per month so one device can go online for an unlimited amount of time seems like a lot of money. It's not even that fast...
- lateralus, on 10/11/2007, -1/+35If this was the Verizon iPhone, I would expect nothing less than $49.99 with an insane list of restrictions...so all in all it doesn't sound too bad.
- dassin, on 10/11/2007, -1/+32I am a Cingular agent. Cingular currently offers unlimited data for regular phones and "Smartphones" (the only current phone in this category is the HTC / Cingular 3125) for $19.99. Blackberry Personal plans (Unlimited data w/ push for personal email, not business mail servers) is 29.99. All other PDS phones (8125, 8525, Blackjack, Treo models, etc) are 39.99. For any of these you can add 1500 messages for another $10 / month.
Unless they are introducing a new data plan JUST for the iPhone (which wouldn't really suprise me, given the sheer number of different plans already) this rumor sounds bogus. - wpong, on 10/11/2007, -2/+24dude. those are not semicolons -- those are colons. semicolons are the characters responsible for the lame winky IM smiley face.
ala ;) - jmacdonagh, on 10/11/2007, -2/+22That doesn't make sense. Unlimited data for most phones is $20 for Cingular. They also have an unlimited data plan for PDAs and Blackberry's at $40. I'm not sure if the PDA data version includes more features (such as push e-mail and other services), or if they require certain kinds of phones (smartphones) to have the $40 plan while the simpler phones require the $20 one.
- spankaccount, on 10/11/2007, -1/+20btw, it's not Cingular anymore. It's AT&T (the beast is back).
- Bklynadam, on 10/11/2007, -0/+18I have a "lending tree" ad. Would you rather see a hot t-shirt model or mortgage interest rates?
- kevinmotel, on 10/11/2007, -0/+18get a job
- rauz, on 10/11/2007, -8/+25Stop subscribing to the Apple category. Problem solved, now go away.
- t0ny, on 10/11/2007, -4/+19Ya, I'm paying around $30 for 3Mbit cable with unlimited.
- taintedzodiac, on 10/11/2007, -2/+16I hope your parents say no. The world needs more responsible parents who teach their children the proper way to spend their money.
If you're under 18, you don't need a phone that costs more than $99 or so, depending on your family's income. Every expensive piece of electronics you own should come from your own pocket after you get a job. - nreisan, on 10/11/2007, -1/+14what he means is EDGE is *****
3g and HSDPA is where its at. Unfortunatly we are going to have to wait for iphone v2 for that - jdoc, on 10/11/2007, -1/+13"ONLY" $30? This phone uses edge, a VERY OLD technology from about 8 years ago, it's like dialup.
I pay $15 for unlimited access on my treo smartphone with Sprint, sometimes i plug it into my laptop and push almost 1MBPS with it. It's pretty good, works everywhere. - diggleague, on 10/11/2007, -1/+12Yeah $20 would be nice, but at least they might not charge the $44.99 I was paying for my PDA connect Cingular dataplan before I canceled it.
- wpong, on 10/11/2007, -1/+12i like those. the girls are always cute.
- InsaneMachine, on 10/11/2007, -0/+11yeah, but Verizon can't do math
- panic, on 10/11/2007, -0/+8Why is the word "ONLY" in the title? Cingular's edge network I believe is $20 and you might as well be on dialup, I'm paying "only" $30 right now for the 3G network which is pretty quick, but its still Edge at least half the time. My friends have Sprint and it's really cheap.. or free.. or something.. I know they got it better than I do, and I think Sprint is using EVDO
Correct me if I'm wrong, I don't feel like researching anything I just said. - inactive, on 10/11/2007, -1/+9shhhh, But it's Apple so shut the hell up or the zealots will mod you down for your abundance of reasoning skills!
- unoriginal, on 10/11/2007, -3/+11What ads?

Yes, technically you can "trick" the system into putting you on a lower data rate for a higher end phone, but if your account gets audited (and yes, it does happen), you can get back-charged for it.
That is assuming you are still talking about unlimited data for an 8125. There are several limited options available starting at 19.99 for 5MB.
Also, I get my commission checks from AT&T / Cingular whether you believe I'm a rep or not ;) - inactive, on 10/11/2007, -1/+8You are right. thjey will shut up about how ridiculously overpriced the iPhone is. Instead, they will talk about how ridiculously overpriced all the plans that work WITH the iPhone are.
The deal between apple and Cingu8lar may not be for nothing, but it sure as ***** isn't to help the CUSTOMERS. - phmfthacim, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7haha "only?" are you kidding?
- youareretarded, on 10/11/2007, -9/+16I didn't realize you could travel around the country with your 3mb connection, untethered, without the need for a hot spot.
I guess you have some kind of special plan.
/end sarcasm - EtherGnat, on 10/11/2007, -1/+7A lot of people are bagging on Verizon, but be careful of restrictions in at&t's "unlimited" data access plans too:
"Data Service sessions may be conducted only for the following purposes: (i) Internet browsing; (ii) email; and (iii) corporate intranet access"
PROHIBITED USES INCLUDE...USING SERVICES: (I) WITH SERVER DEVICES OR WITH HOST COMPUTER APPLICATIONS, INCLUDING, WITHOUT LIMITATION, WEB CAMERA POSTS OR BROADCASTS, CONTINUOUS JPEG FILE TRANSFERS, AUTOMATIC DATA FEEDS, TELEMETRY APPLICATIONS, PEER-TO-PEER (P2P) FILE SHARING, AUTOMATED FUNCTIONS OR ANY OTHER MACHINE-TO-MACHINE APPLICATIONS; (II) AS SUBSTITUTE OR BACKUP FOR PRIVATE LINES OR DEDICATED DATA CONNECTIONS; (III) FOR VOICE OVER IP; (IV) IN CONJUNCTION WITH WWAN OR OTHER APPLICATIONS OR DEVICES WHICH AGGREGATE USAGE FROM MULTIPLE SOURCES PRIOR TO TRANSMISSION; (V) USING THE SERVICES FOR ANY ACTIVITY THAT ADVERSELY AFFECTS THE ABILITY OF OTHER PEOPLE OR SYSTEMS TO USE EITHER THE SERVICES OR OTHER PARTIES' INTERNET-BASED RESOURCES INCLUDING, BUT NOT LIMITED TO EXCESSIVE CONSUMPTION OF NETWORK OR SYSTEM RESOURCES (WHETHER INTENTIONAL OR UNINTENTIONAL) AND "DENIAL OF SERVICE" (DOS) ATTACKS AGAINST ANOTHER NETWORK HOST OR INDIVIDUAL USER; OR (VI) INTERFERENCE WITH OR DISRUPTION OF OTHER NETWORK USERS, NETWORK SERVICES OR NETWORK EQUIPMENT. EXCEPT FOR CONTENT FORMATTED IN ACCORDANCE WITH CINGULAR’S CONTENT STANDARDS, UNLIMITED PLANS CANNOT BE USED FOR UPLOADING, DOWNLOADING OR STREAMING OF VIDEO CONTENT (E.G. MOVIES, TV), MUSIC OR GAMES. FURTHERMORE, UNLIMITED PLANS (EXCEPT FOR DATACONNECT AND BLACKBERRY TETHERED) CANNOT BE USED FOR ANY APPLICATIONS THAT TETHER THE DEVICE (THROUGH USE OF, INCLUDING WITHOUT LIMITATION, CONNECTION KITS, OTHER PHONE/PDA-TO-COMPUTER ACCESSORIES, BLUETOOTH® OR ANY OTHER WIRELESS TECHNOLOGY) TO LAPTOPS, PCS, OR OTHER EQUIPMENT FOR ANY PURPOSE. Service is not intended to provide full-time connections, and the Service may be discontinued...
...Cingular reserves the right to (i) limit throughput or amount of data transferred, deny Service and/or terminate Service, without notice, to anyone it believes is using the Service in any manner prohibited above or whose usage adversely impacts its network or service levels or hinders access to its network..."

I'm not saying anybody else has better terms, but make sure you know what you're getting yourself in for before you sign a two year contract. - AmusedToDeath, on 10/11/2007, -1/+7Although I agree with you guys, I think derek's comment reflects the major problem with the iPhone. It's clearly aimed at the average consumer rather than business users like most smartphones are. The problem is that *most* average consumers simply do not need a smartphone. That's why PDAs and smartphones have only ever managed to snag a small portion of the market - because most people don't really need one.
So it will be very hard for the average joe to walk into Best Buy and get a $500 phone, then sign up for a $60-$100/month plan on top of that, no matter how cool the damn thing is. When I first saw the iPhone I was set on getting one. But then I had time to think about how freaking expensive its total cost of ownership was. - totorototoro, on 10/11/2007, -2/+8why not both? :p
I can handle that. - inactive, on 10/11/2007, -8/+14Giving your the priviledge of paying $2500 to talk on a ***** phone for two years. Minimum.
Why pay $2500 to be accepted socially ? Just get some hookers with that money. - AceTracer, on 10/11/2007, -2/+7So on top of paying $600 for the phone, I have to pay 6 times as much as T-Mobile's data plan. I think I'll pass.
- LaSepultura, on 10/11/2007, -1/+6T-Mobile has the right idea for their Sidekick. I think it's only $20 for unlimited data.
Right now I use Nextel and their data is only $10 a month unlimited, but it's not that fast. Good for AIM.
I think $30 a month is only worth it for Verizon's data plan. - modafroman, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5Buried for another apple rumour. We won't know all the details until it is released, mk. So stop spreading rumours.
NB: I don't hate apple, I love them, its just that I know that {almost} no rumour about an apple product will be true, we will know when it is announced by apple, and is up on their webpage. - Yarnage, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4You're right, Sprint is EVDO and they have the cheapest data plans out of any provider. That was one of the reasons I choose them :D
I can stream live video to my phone. It's pretty sweet. - Yarnage, on 10/11/2007, -1/+5Sorry, but your Math is wrong. The cheapest voice plan is $59.99 a month so it's more like $2,760 for the iPhone and 2 years of service with voice and data.
I pay less than that for my Palm 700wx with Sprint and I have unlimited data, unlimited SMS and I don't have the cheapest voice plan.
I hate AT&T - MacParrot, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4hdtvdust,
Saying there hasn't been a mass exodus to ATT for an iPhone is sorta immaterial since it hasn't been released yet. Maybe you can answer this; why would people switch to an iPhone BEFORE it's released? I have no idea how many (if any) people will switch once it's out and neither do you.
As far as no one caring, I've seen quite a few stories on Apple and the iPhone on mainstream media (not tech) channels. Even some outside the US which is strange since it won't be officially released overseas for awhile. Maybe you just have blinders on that doesn't allow you to see anything about Apple that isn't covered in your own bile.
FTR: I'm already a Cingular (ATT) customer and have no intention of getting an iPhone with the product specs as shown. I don't need it as a phone and it doesn't have enough storage for me to consider it for an iPod. See? It isn't that hard even for an Apple user to not want an Apple product. Maybe you should get out more. - BriSoFli, on 10/11/2007, -5/+9@hdtvdust: Yeah, because the only reason anyone would want an iPhone is so that they can fit in.
- 200iso, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4take a look at what we pay for data up here in Canada, then tell me how you feel about the $30/mo rate
$210/month gets you 500MB, with $5/MB overage charge.
http://www.shoprogers.com/business/wireless/plans_services/business_plans.asp?plan=dataservice&cat=2&typ=2 - Dominatus, on 10/11/2007, -1/+5I just got a blackberry. When I called Cingular to get data they said I could get unlimited data without SMS for 29.99 or unlimited data with 1500 SMS for 39.99
- gbarger, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4So, that sounds about right, $210 Canadian is about $25 American right. Sounds like you might have a deal there!
/end Canadian Bacon joke. - nogami, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Well, they certainly won't be doing that in Canada. Major carriers are charging $0.03 to $0.05 per KB here. No unlimited option even is available.
Thank goodness for WiFi being available almost everywhere that I can use on my phone. - Eddiecoaster, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3$30 for edge? i pay $15 for evdo and i have seen over 950kbps on that connection.
- jediorange, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4You're not very bright are you? So you paid a lot of money for a computer... and now they want you to pay for the internet? OMG!!! That's how they make their money. It's not on the phones - that's going to Apple.
- Lazrius, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3I don't think you guys are understanding me except for scipyo. I would be buying it with my own money that I earned from working a job, the thing is my parents don't want me to "waste my money." Thank you scipyo for pointing that out.
- UnclePunk, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4I have a Sprint Sero plan where each phone has unlimited data and picturemail, 500 anytime minutes, n/w start at 8pm and unlimited PCS to PCS. The whole thing costs ~$30 on a Treo 700P... and that's EVDO son. Not crappy EDGE.
- lasvegas, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4People that can afford to spend $600 for a phone will have no problem paying $99 ($59 voice+$30 data) per month to use it. $1,800 to have and use the iphone for a year. Will they require a data plan?
I use sprint and pay $45 per month for voice and unlimited data, phone was free. $540 vs $1800 is a huge difference. Would you rather have a pretty decent sprint phone plus a 42' HDTV or the iphone? - inactive, on 10/11/2007, -2/+5EDGE is much faster than dialup, but it has been out for a few years.
I am posting this over an EDGE connection, through my Nokia E62. It works just fine for surfing, and I can even watch my slingplayer over it (though the quality is low). Can play World of Warcraft just fine too.
Its no 3G, but its far from as bad as Dailup. - darkten, on 10/11/2007, -2/+5What is the value of live postage stamp sized video exactly, anyway? As much as Verizon, Sprint and Cingulatt brag about this, I'll be damned if I can see the BFD.
- etx313, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Yeah, it should be even less for crappy 2g service. And the functionality will be gimped anyways. You cannot use it as a bluetooth modem to connect to the internet like you can with a real smart phone.
- jediorange, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2That's how they make their money. Why don't you go ahead and invest millions of dollars in a wireless network, and pay people to maintain it, and then give away the service for free. Some people just really don't understand how the world works...
- p0tent1al, on 10/11/2007, -9/+11Ok, now I'm getting pissed off.
Please get rid of the snorg tees advertisements. - inactive, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3Notice how he said "allow me to buy an iPhone."
That doesn't mean his parents are going to buy him one.
