" UPDATE: I got an email this afternoon from Patrice Gouttebel, Global Account Manager for SeeFile Software. She says, "I just wanted to let you know that we have several bundles with the Mac Mini, and the 1TB drive is external. We have no knowledge of the new specs of the Mac Mini that will be introduced at Macworld."
Whoever wrote this up knows nothing about the Mac Mini, first there's no way in ***** to cram a 3.5" drive into it and second the Mac Mini is a 5v system and uses 2.5" drives, like a laptop there's no 12v rail to run a 3.5" drive. - inactive, on 01/06/2009, -8/+21And its all yours for only $5,999 and your newborn child.
- inactive, on 01/06/2009, -0/+12* Sarcasm.
- sockpuppets, on 01/06/2009, -1/+13Take it, I can't afford to raise it in this economy anyway.
- risenphoenixkai, on 01/06/2009, -0/+11Not on a 2.5" drive, which is what the Mini has. Max is 500 GB.
- agarc, on 01/06/2009, -0/+9I cannot believe they didn't announce the new Mini. WTF is taking them so long? I was ready to buy it today. I'm extremely disappointed.
What a huge let down. :( - Chris_F, on 01/06/2009, -5/+14Yawn. Come and get me when Apple puts an up-to-date graphics card into one of their computers. Can't even get a 9800GTX much less a GTX280. Tired of seeing cards from 2 years ago in their specs.
- vaguilera, on 01/06/2009, -5/+13you can get 1tb on a single drive now...
- TheMachine1, on 01/06/2009, -2/+9Thats a lot porn or is the typical "hello world" application approaching 1 GB now?
- TheTallest, on 01/06/2009, -6/+12News Flash! Apple sells product with standard off the shelf hardware. Fanboys swoon
- McNash, on 01/05/2009, -1/+7Sounds like quite the little media center.
- benologist, on 01/06/2009, -0/+4Good work.... Gizmodo regurgitated Ars who regurgitated this:
http://seefile.com/news.html - zip22, on 01/06/2009, -0/+4I dugg you for the update, but if you read the article, you can see they were speculating that there would be two 2.5" hdds, not a 3.5".
- inactive, on 01/06/2009, -0/+4You mean like Microsoft's media center that actually "just works" ?!!
BTW- stuffing someone else's standard 3.5 hard drive in there? That is innovative how? - RetepNamenots, on 01/06/2009, -0/+4And as we've just found out, no new Mini. =(
- warpdesign, on 01/06/2009, -0/+3hmmm. Mac mini + Boxee = media PC? Depends on the price point...
- BrendanSheehan, on 01/06/2009, -1/+4I just burst saliva onto my display with an sharp uncontrollable laugh when I read that. It was most uncivilized.
- kovac9478, on 01/06/2009, -2/+5i hope this is cheap
- inactive, on 01/06/2009, -1/+3HA...
HA...HA
BUAHAHAAAAAHAHAHAAAAAA
HAAAAA
HAAAA
HAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAaaa.....!!! - FireLark, on 01/06/2009, -0/+2yep - I was looking to purchase one as well. Now we playing the waiting game...with a fancy new 17" loading screen, hazaah!
- anshuman, on 01/06/2009, -2/+4thanks and I hope they also install super low-price sticker too .
:) ....common...cant i think different? :D - sockpuppets, on 01/06/2009, -0/+2*Simulated Sarcasm
- digitalpencil, on 01/06/2009, -0/+2Minis currently start out at $599 but with 2 x 500GB 2.5" HDDs for $200 and 2GB RAM for $25.. you could theoretically have a 2.5GHZ C2D machine with 4GB RAM, 1TB storage and most likely, a 9400M for around $825..
Which, ain't that bad when you think about the form-factor of these machines and the comparative price of similar sized boxes.. in fact, it's a bit of a steal!
As long as you upgrade it yourself and don't pay the iTax that is ;)
edit: not to knock your comment btw.. it was pretty funny, just thinking realistically these are actually pretty aggressively priced boxes when you consider the tiny footprint.. - Balanced, on 01/06/2009, -0/+2Probably.
- hellgurl104, on 01/06/2009, -0/+2for some reason i don't think it'll happen... just don't. but if it does, i'll be the first in line ;) haha
- inactive, on 01/06/2009, -0/+2I think the great Mac mysticism is beginning to disappear at Digg. Is hell freezing over?
- cam0man, on 01/07/2009, -0/+2why bother? Grab an old xbox and just toss on XBMC, guaranteed to be 1000% better than anything else out there for media centers. Plus you can toss in a 1TB drive and build the whole system for probably $150.
Or just take an old PC and juice it up with some ram, decent video card, and you'll be doing HD video no problems. This thing looks like a waste of money and is pretty much a toy compared to any decent media center, I actually laughed when I read 'cheap server market'. - mrBitch, on 01/06/2009, -0/+2@kaaBOOM, of course the rumour is BS, just look up a few posts for judicar's post :
" UPDATE: I got an email this afternoon from Patrice Gouttebel, Global Account Manager for SeeFile Software. She says, "I just wanted to let you know that we have several bundles with the Mac Mini, and the 1TB drive is external. We have no knowledge of the new specs of the Mac Mini that will be introduced at Macworld."
Oh, and it looks like the Mac Mini will also have a Mick Mini model with a special "Mick" custom paint job :
http://bp2.blogger.com/_8ItFDPb3vv8/SFZ3m9uLm0I/AA ... - filovirus, on 01/06/2009, -1/+2I would love a bag of hurt to go with my mini, please Mr. Jobs, can I have more.
- kaaBOOM, on 01/06/2009, -1/+2Sounded reasonable until I got to the part about the build-to-order dual hard drive option. That would kind of defeat the purpose of a mini to have a big empty space for a second hard drive. So I say this rumor is BS. Maybe the Mac mini will get an upgrade, but this is not it.
- digitalpencil, on 01/06/2009, -0/+1they use 2.5" HDDs
- scoobycarolan, on 01/06/2009, -0/+1usual gizmodo garbage.
- avatarpalin, on 01/06/2009, -0/+1No it will live on, with the Newton and the Cube... they still have conventions for those...
- smallnshort247, on 01/06/2009, -0/+1I'd really like a brand new mac mini that also comes with a cheaper/small apple monitor, keyboard, and mouse... Because I don't think I could get the full "apple experience" still using my crappy dell crt monitor and keyboard..or..im probably just cheap
- darkciti2, on 01/08/2009, -0/+1Grrr.... I love my mini, but I've outgrown it. I have a CinemaDisplay, so I don't want an iMac, and I can't afford a Mac Pro.
Please, please just come out with "the Mac": Upgradeable video, raidable 3.5" storage, a couple of PCI-X slots (so I can upgrade to a 10GB ethernet card, or USB3.0 someday), dual FW800 and 8 USB ports and a price point around $1,000.
Is that too much to ask? If so, the Hackintoshes are looking more appealing by the day. - MajorOutage, on 01/06/2009, -3/+3"More evidence that the new Mac minis are at least partly geared toward the cheap server market:"
Only if your definition of "cheap" is "starting at $399 plus tax."
Makes me regret the Intel Atom 330 board I just got for $79 shipped....not... - induren, on 01/06/2009, -1/+1As a Mac fan, I unfortunately have a hunch that it will still be too expensive and not functional enough, just like our dear old mac mini.
- MajorOutage, on 01/06/2009, -3/+3Or build a comparable rig yourself for roughly half of that.
- inactive, on 01/07/2009, -1/+0Usual Apple garbage
- inactive, on 01/06/2009, -4/+3and no keyboard either. revolutionary!
- BrendanSheehan, on 01/06/2009, -3/+21 TB
- bluemist, on 01/06/2009, -3/+1Apple TV will die.
- pbrooks100, on 01/06/2009, -2/+0I got a dialog on my XP machine this morning asking me to update "Bonjour". Coincidence?
- itsLadam, on 01/06/2009, -2/+0"Plausible"
The mythbusters have finally slipped up and shown that they write gizmodo. - melamine, on 01/06/2009, -3/+1I want to buy it!
- Chris_F, on 01/06/2009, -5/+2What is worse, I bet it would be cheaper to configure the mini with a smaller drive on their website and then buy a 1TB drive for it someplace else. If not, I hope you have deep pockets.
- Trickybunny, on 01/06/2009, -12/+7Wow, 1TB?!?! Thats incredible!!!!
[sarcasim] - tnoy, on 01/06/2009, -9/+4Can someone please let me know why 1TB being available in the Mini is a big deal? Did the old one use a laptop drive?
1.5TB 3.5" drives are readily available now, so why not one of those? - jakem1, on 01/06/2009, -9/+2Except that it lacks any decent media center software.
