- Inspiron700m, on 06/27/2008, -3/+70How much is an iPhone 3G going to cost me over my mandatory 3 year contract?
Let’s say you choose the $60 plan as a bare minimum plus the $15/month voice value pack…
$199 iPhone 3G after taxes (in BC at least) = $224.87
$60 voice/data plan + $15 voice value pack + $6.95 SAF = 81.95 + GST/PST = $92.60/month
$92.60 x 36 months (3 year contract) = 3333.60 + $224.87 = $3558.47 over 3 years!
EPIC FAIL!!!
http://www.iphoneincanada.ca/iphone-rogers/rogers- ...- lartones, on 06/28/2008, -0/+20I was getting an iPhone right from the get go, but with a $100 plan i don't think i will get one anymore!
- Walker2323, on 06/28/2008, -0/+10I make very good money, I love tech, I've wanted an iPhone since day one, I got my wife an unlocked iPhone, and yet... I just can't bring myself to pay for this. I calculated my probable monthly bill and it's around $130. And i don't make that many calls. Give me a break. Rogers is taking advantage of their GSM monopoly in a big way. *****.
- jasonh1234, on 06/29/2008, -0/+2I'm almost thinking of printing that out on a huge sign and standing outside a Rogers store on the 11th.
- iloveiphone14, on 08/21/2008, -0/+0I just got an I-Phone last friday, i have a 20 dollar plan. 150 day time minutes unlimited after 8pm on weeknights, unlimited weekends and 1000 minutes rogers to rogers calling and i was able to upgrade to an 8gig iphone without getting a data plan plus it was an early upgrade since i just got a sony erickson 17 months ago for a 3 year term... the agent that was helping at rogers video said that i don't have to get the data plan... i guess it just depends on who ever employee you are dealing with because they get a commission for every sign-up they have.
- gfair, on 06/28/2008, -0/+25With fierce bidding on new cellular spectrum, Rogers is going to get the $%@! kicked out of them in less than a year when the next national, and possibly several regional, cell providers begin offering service.
Rogers rates + iPhone + Comcastic customer service = Chapter 11.- klassica, on 06/28/2008, -0/+13Dugg for the appropriate use of "Comcastic"
- kingcam, on 06/28/2008, -0/+2Sorry to cursh your dreams man,
No matter who wins the bidding war on the new spectrum, nothing will change. Either they start to play rough with the existing telcos and Roger's runs them into the ground then buys them a la Walmart or the new company comes to the conclusion that there is no reason to compete with Rogers in any serious way. - drunknmunky1, on 06/28/2008, -0/+1Rogers rates + iPhone + Comcastic customer service + GSM Monopoly = $$$
***** Rogers
- mal1964, on 06/28/2008, -2/+1Seize Your Moment!
- JeffHenderson, on 06/28/2008, -0/+23Blame the CRTC. They are the ones restricting competition. US companies like Verizon or AT&T would love to expand to Canada, and they would force Rogers to either lower their rates or go out of business.
Unfortunately, a wireless company that isn't Canadian owned cannot get a license in Canada.
Screwed by our own government again.- smacksaw, on 06/28/2008, -0/+2I dugg you up, however I would point out to you that Rogers Wireless previous name was Rogers AT&T. So AT&T was already there. When I had AT&T (US) I had unlimited roaming+LD when I was in Canada. It was the same plan they sold in Canada, the Digital One Rate.
- Invid, on 06/28/2008, -0/+3The only reason AT&T was in Canada at all was because they had a majority Canadian partner. The CRTC never should have approved the Fido purchase (Canada's only other GSM carrier). I am with Fido and their plans and service have steadily gone downhill since they were acquired. At least my plan (CityFIdo - unlimited local airtime, $45) was grandfathered.
Fido was purchased so that Rogers could kill the competitive pressure that was improving rate plans for all Canadians. My plan and the unlimited data for $50/month were the first things they killed after the acquisition.
I'm certain that were Fido still independent, they would have gotten the iPhone and we would have the competitive pricing that exists in the States. - kingcam, on 06/28/2008, -0/+4Nope, sorry, everyone would be saying that the CRTC is great if it would just do its ***** job. As someone else mentioned, the Rogers buyout of Fido should never have been allowed, it stands against the mandate of the CRTC.

I really, really, really miss Clearnet. - vemerge, on 06/28/2008, -0/+2I've used Sasktel and Shaw for my landline, internet and TV, and haven't had any issues.

Just boycott the iphone maybe if too few people buy them they will come to there senses.- PopcornDave, on 06/28/2008, -0/+1Or just dump your cell phone service for a few months. Get enough people to just give that up for a little while and you'll bring those bastards to their knees.
- rpgmaker, on 06/28/2008, -9/+1Or you could just buy another phone. Is not like you "have" to buy the iPhone, there are several really cool Nokia phones out there.
- mrBitch, on 06/28/2008, -0/+5You idiot, this is about Rogers' data plans. A Nokia phone on Rogers is still going to cost the same.
- brycehun, on 06/28/2008, -0/+1You are absolutely right. Edward Rogers and his ridiculously large corporation (the biggest in Canada) have been robbing consumers of their hard-earned dollars for entirely too long, but unfortunately there isn't much we can do, Bell is just as awful!
- Goblin, on 06/28/2008, -1/+2Nonsense there's nothing you can do. Rogers customers have made a decision that getting ripped off is preferable to not having a cellular service. If they instead said the rates are not worth it and didn't buy the company would either have to adjust to a level the market was happy with or go out of business. If they turn around and say "but I need a cell phone so I have to pay it" then the price is low enough that it's only worth bitching about, but not doing anything about.
If the customers will pay the rate, why would the company lower it?

- StayPuft21, on 06/27/2008, -4/+90Fail. Apple's customer base are notoriously scrupulous consumers. When you try and couple a great phone to a ass-raping data plan we know, Ted. Nice attempt to capitalize on our iPhone-lust; an attempt I can promise will fail to meet your financial expectations.
- ufia, on 06/28/2008, -25/+12Apple's customers are so scrupulous they buy a rectangular shaped $200 phone. A regular ergonomically shaped mobile phone at a quarter of the price is not good enough for you?
- tamuengineer, on 06/28/2008, -5/+5I think you under estimate the cult-like following of consumers of Apple products.
- revglenn, on 06/28/2008, -8/+7Did you really just refer to Apple's customers (as in the people who paid $600 for a phone, purchase new extremely overpriced ipods at least every 2 years when theirs breaks, and didn't die laughing when the MacBook Air was released) as notoriously scrupulous? really?
Are you sure you're not confusing "scrupulous" with "gullible"?- reformation, on 06/30/2008, -0/+1Since when are ipods over priced? Show me another 160gig player for £200?
- reformation, on 06/30/2008, -0/+1Since when are ipods over priced? Show me another 160gig player for £200?
- solistus, on 06/28/2008, -4/+3Does anyone else find it ironic that the "lolz Apple fans are cultists" commenters are far more cult-like in their consistency than actual Apple fans? revglenn, you do realise that the iPhone was only $600 for a few weeks and that most Apple customers don't give two ***** about the Air because it's not being marketed at consumers?
- solistus, on 06/29/2008, -0/+2Aaaand the anti-Apple cultists bury me with no explanation.
- tamuengineer, on 06/29/2008, -1/+2"The Air is not being marketed at consumers", if anything needs explanation it is that comment.
- solistus, on 06/29/2008, -0/+3What's to explain? The Air is a subnotebook. It's aimed at business customers, not general consumers. The MacBook, iPod, iPhone and iMac are Apple's current consumer-targeted apps. Count the number of Air commercials you see (excluding business-targeted advertising) compared to, say, iPod or iPhone commercials. It's the same reason Apple doesn't market products like the MacBook Pro or Mac Pro as aggressively as the iProducts. People who buy $2-3000 (sub)notebooks and octo-core workstations do their own research and/or look to business-targeted media. They had a lot of TV commercials on product debut to get the word out and generate media buzz, but not anymore. As I said, most Apple customers are not interested in the Air and Apple knows this. It's a niche product. People make fun of it because it's not suitable for most consumers, but that's not its purpose.

- Rapter09, on 06/28/2008, -0/+13Guess what happens when you run out of minutes? No incoming calls.
- yabos, on 06/28/2008, -0/+6Because it's ***** Rogers and it even counts against your minutes when you're checking your voice mail. Now with visual voice mail it probably won't just to see who left messages but when you call in to listen to it you get ***** over by Rogers for that too.
- HolyChimp, on 06/28/2008, -2/+2@Rapter09: What I mean is 'Who the ***** pays for incoming calls?' Only time I've ever had to pay to receive a call was when I was abroad and had to pay the roaming charge.
@yabos: I'm fairly sure the visual voicemail uses data though, so maybe it'll uses your data allowance :D - yabos, on 06/28/2008, -0/+4Yeah it does use data and of course that will likely count against your data limit even though it's internal data and costs Rogers next to nothing. Still, we get screwed just answering the phone. If you get some tellemarketer calling you, you get your minutes lost for taking that call.
- snugglebear, on 06/28/2008, -0/+1HolyChimp, in canada it takes off our minutes when we receive a call. We can pay 10+ bucks a month for unlimited incoming calls but by default it uses your minutes AND the persons calling minutes when you get a call.
I never understood that one. Landlines its normal but cell phones they just ***** you.
- lc31c, on 07/01/2008, -0/+0Damn Robbers Wireless! =D

Dear *Rogers Exec*,
Today your company (Rogers Communications) released the details of its proposed rate scheme for the Apple iPhone. Given my general love for Apple products, I have patiently waited for the iPhone to makes its way to Canada. Disappointingly, the announcement made today has dashed both the limelight and my wish of owning an iPhone.
The most painful factor of the plans announced today is a disregard in providing a fair and reasonable service in concert with cost. The most notable element of these new plans is the stinging choice between 400Mb and 2Gb of data on the network. These quotas are better than in past, but they remain the worst in the fleet of international iPhone mobile carriers. No other mobile carrier worldwide has offered a single plan below the 1Gb threshold, with a significant majority opting to provide users with unlimited service.
I and my family have long used Rogers as our wireless service provider. I was seriously considering purchasing an iPhone come July 11th. However, the service options you have raised has in one fellow swoop dashed the wish I had for purchasing an iPhone on your network. Beyond this, it has raised a powerful realization for me as a consumer of your services. If these plans reflect how you would like me to view you as a mobile service provider, then I wonder why, I and my family should continue to pay an growing part of our hard earned income for your mobile services.
Sincerely,- Giga, on 06/28/2008, -2/+0"No other mobile carrier worldwide has offered a single plan below the 1Gb threshold, with a significant majority opting to provide users with unlimited service."
Funny that, Vodafone in NZ offers 200MB. And that is actually intended to be used as a replacement to ADSL, not just for phone use. The phone specific plans range from 0MB to 15MB. - silverliner, on 06/28/2008, -0/+3One dignified letter such as yours would go ten times further than the juvenile contempt the 10,000 responses that site is hoping to get.
- SonicRift, on 06/28/2008, -0/+1What is a fellow swoop? I hope you proofread this before sending...
- SteveHiggs, on 06/28/2008, -0/+2it's a common term; maybe it's a Canadian thing? we all use it up here lol.

Jon. - PopcornDave, on 06/28/2008, -0/+2If you really want to let them know how you feel, cancel your contract or don't use their service. If that means you're without a cell phone, go to a pre-paid if that's an option.
Once they see the money flow dry up, they'll listen.
I know it's not completely conceivable to get a huge amount of people to just dump their cell phone because for some reason they're like electronic heroin, but it's the only way you're going to hit them where it hurts.- teh_techie, on 06/28/2008, -0/+2Canceling your contract doesn't hit em where it hurts. It hits you! You have to pay to leave the contract, which means they are getting your money - and not providing you with service.
Better idea = ride out the rest of your contract, using every possible minute, and text message (costing them the most per your plan), then never renew again.

I understand that there is little or no competition in Canada and that the CRTC does not regulate your business but that is no excuse for treating you customers like you own personal PIGGY bank.
My wife is a current Rogers wireless customer and my family subscribes to over $200 per month worth of other Rogers products (Internet, Cable TV, Digital TV). I was defiantly planning on purchasing an iPhone come July 11th. and coming back to the Rogers family however, the service options you have raised has in one fell swoop dashed the wish I had for purchasing an iPhone on your network. Clarkeness- larathydo, on 06/28/2008, -1/+9Hehe you read my mind. I think this is absolutely stupid and I've already emailed diggnationfans@gmail.com asking this.
Everyone should do the same and ask them to cover it on Diggnation. We need to spread the word! No longer should we let big companies like Rogers push us Canadian consumers around. We've put up for it until now - when they got a chance to overcharge consumers for the iPhone they obviously leaped on the opportunity to roll around in money!- Iznogoth, on 06/28/2008, -0/+4I've emailed to...

- JnOrris, on 06/28/2008, -0/+9yes we get charged for everything...
- blackjack75, on 06/28/2008, -0/+7What? Do you mean incoming calls are not free in Canada? Someone calls you to try to sell you ***** and YOU pay?
- snugglebear, on 06/28/2008, -0/+1Noone really calls cell phone numbers for that *****, they aren't public. But yeah, when someone calls us it comes out of our minutes AND theirs unless we pay for free incoming calls.
- arjie, on 06/28/2008, -0/+3Dude, they're free everywhere else in the world. I'm in India and the idea of having to pay to receive a call is scary. Heck, Virgin Mobile has this gimmicky scheme where you get more credit if you receive a call.
- defunctlife, on 06/28/2008, -0/+3Canada's network is quite different from all those around the world. I know pretty much everywhere else gets free incoming calls/text messages. In Canada you either pay for these or buy an unlimited incoming/text plan which is pretty *****. But we also have all inclusive home phone lines. We can make unlimited local calls for our plan, including mobile phones and talk for unlimited minutes as long as it's a local call. Even with pay phones, you can pop in 35 cents and should you have someone important enough to talk to for hours, you can call any local number including mobile phones and talk for an unlimited amount of time. I know in most countries like Australia, Germany etc you have to keep popping money in the phone when making most calls.
Also with alice.de internet in Germany, train reservations, airline companies you pay per minute (from 10-90 Euro cents a minute) for support. Should you have a problem and have to deal with most idiots that work at large firms they can take an hour to resolve, totally upping your monthly costs. In Canada you are provided 1-800 numbers or free mobile numbers to call that don't cost you anything, but still the service 90% of the time with the big telecoms in Canada is highly lacking with non skilled works and often out right assholes working the phones (that one is for you Telus). Even check on skype, a call to a Canadian land line or mobile number is the same price.
And yeah we pay up the ass for voice mail (to have it and to check it). Basically users are being double charged, both the caller and the receiver so the telecom company can make more money.
- HolyChimp, on 06/28/2008, -0/+22Christ... do you get charged for voicemail as well?
- pcote, on 06/27/2008, -8/+30How can Apple let that happen ?

Frankly, the Canadians deserve it for fostering anti-competitive practices. - HonoredMule, on 06/28/2008, -0/+12In case you haven't been paying attention to any of the Canadian issues that have been dugg over the past year, let me bring you up to speed. We Canadians have been fighting (kicking and screaming, in fact) about anti-competitive and the problems with our telecommunications industry for the past year. We're just getting completely ignored by ALL major players in our government, and getting ***** responses to our complaints which effectively declare that nothing is wrong and we should be happy with our ***** services.
- TSSaloic, on 07/11/2008, -0/+1Sonnybobiche, Apple has limited suply of the iPhone 3G to Rogers over this matter.

But yeah this is outrageous.. im wondering what to do.. I really wished for an iPhone..
That site is nice, except the thing about the "iPhone dream", sounds kinda lame and kills it a little bit.

- The_Ox, on 06/28/2008, -4/+14Apple could prevent Rogers from having the phone until Rogers got their act together.
- Galaxylander, on 06/28/2008, -9/+5You guys honestly think that Rogers would care if Apple didn't let them have the iPhone? All they'd do is beg another company to bring an 'iPhone killer' and market it as better.
- solistus, on 06/28/2008, -0/+5Yes, Ox, Apple could voluntarily exclude itself from the Canadian market and deny Canadians ANY chance to get an iPhone because Canada's monopolistic telecom offers ***** rate plans.
OR, they can suck it up, go through the only option they have (Rogers) and leave it to Canadians to fix the utterly broken state of their telecom industry. It's easy to say "Apple shouldn't let Rogers do this" but when the alternative to poor iPhone service is no iPhone service, it's not really clear what they'd be accomplishing by refusing to do business with Rogers.
- Sherman901, on 06/28/2008, -12/+12apple can't do anything about it...
- PhotoShap, on 06/27/2008, -19/+42I was gonna buy one, was counting down the days in fact. But since seeing Rogers rate sheet, well I'm just going to go back and buy another hacked original iPhone and use it with my Unlimited City Fido Plan.
I spend way too much with Rogers and hate that I'm treated like a Canadian. AKA taking it in the ass when Canadian telecom providers determine pricing.
Here's wishing the United States invades Canada already so we can have some competition or just subscribe to an American Telecom company with good rates!- freehunter, on 06/28/2008, -0/+4Better rates. There's no such thing as an American telco with good rates, not since Alltel got bought by Verizon. I'm still dreading having the change providers here in the near future.

We have voicemail, caller id, and all the other stupid ***** that should already come with a plan. And you know how much we pay each for one month?
$75
You know what the kicker is?
We both have iPhones.

I'm sure with Rogers it will fall on deaf ears (or blind eyes?), but probably the smartest move to make- snugglebear, on 06/28/2008, -0/+2My father actually has been doing this for years. http://www.o2.co.uk/iphone/paymonthly- solistus, on 06/28/2008, -0/+1Those rates look pretty good - a little better than AT&T's here in the US, and a free iPhone with the higher plans, nice! Sidenote: why do they refer to their plans as tariffs? Doesn't 'tariff' refer to international trade taxes? You Brits are crazy :P
- Goblin, on 06/28/2008, -0/+3It should also be noted that there hasn't been an increase in the rates for the move to 3G.
I can't believe the UK is the one country NOT getting screwed by iPhone 3G, we're normally ripped off something shocking.

- pradaaddict, on 06/28/2008, -2/+23I was fully prepared to pay a $380 ETF with Telus just to purchase the iPhone 3G but now these plans are making me seriously re-think it. I was going to buy two of them, one for me and one for my spouse. There is no mention of family plans and there are horrible data caps when you consider MobileMe, Youtube, picture exchange or large email attachments.
There needs to be three options and family calling should be always unltd.
$60 ~ 250 minutes, 200 text, untld data, caller id, visual voicemail

- Giga, on 06/30/2008, -0/+0$20/month is still double the price what credential101 was asking for and you didn't mention unlimited texting being included in that price...
- Jo9100, on 06/28/2008, -2/+11Virgin Mobile Canada: 7$/month = unlimited internet.
In short, I was with Fido, and their ***** management/plans (including data) convinced me to go elsewhere where I would be more appreciated as a customer.- n8to, on 06/28/2008, -0/+8Unlimited internet? Maybe with some ***** WAP browser on your old motorola. But there is no way that you would be able to get unlimited data with an iPhone on Virgin.
- netxypher, on 06/28/2008, -0/+2$7/month != unlimited internet. $7/month == unlimited WAP. WAP = suck. Rogers and Fido also offer this for the same price. Also, Virgin is CDMA in Canada (Bell MVNO -- meaning they use their towers).
- Bots, on 06/28/2008, -0/+2that really doesn't mean *****. the thing is, your virgin mobile phone is probably ass-tastic for web surfing. This is why they can tell you that you can download as much as they want because they know people don't want to browse the internet on crappy mobile phones that aren't like the iphone. a device like the iphone will CHEW through data. If someone is watching youtube videos all day that's almost the same equivalent as someone on a desktop PC watching the same thing in terms of dataflow. Data costs rogers money hence why they are being stingy about it. I really did see this coming but I'm sad that its actually true. I can't see myself paying that much for the iphone.
- samuel514, on 06/29/2008, -0/+1It's WAP internet with regular cellphone, no smartphone, nothing comparable to the iPhone..
- n8to, on 06/28/2008, -0/+8Unlimited internet? Maybe with some ***** WAP browser on your old motorola. But there is no way that you would be able to get unlimited data with an iPhone on Virgin.
- themurph2099, on 06/28/2008, -3/+56You know the Roger's plan sucks. It really does. The only problem with this is that "***** you" is not a response that is going to be taken seriously. This should be done under something a little bit cleaner. Using the term "***** you" not only comes off as crass and immature, it also prevents any media outlets from helping you take up your cause or reporting on what you're trying to promote. Roger's needs to be forced into catching up with the rest of the world, but "***** you" isn't going to do it.

- RogueMountie, on 06/28/2008, -4/+17Given that this is an article about ROGERS, your statement is both ironic, and completely idiotic.
- sonnybobiche, on 06/28/2008, -2/+4It's called a MONOPOLY. Trust-busting and the like are essential to capitalism.
- jstephe, on 06/28/2008, -0/+0Actually there is no monopoly, there is however a group of companies selling a service that work together to set extremely high prices and have an un-written agreement to stick it to there customers for the good of there companies. This is exactly the same model used by the Gas companies and that is why all gas station prices go up and down in unison. This I believe is called collusion but in Canada and the US it is called good business.
- Yage2006, on 06/28/2008, -1/+14Dear asshead Canada is capitalist.
Did your daddy say we were communist WTF
- DesktopGeo, on 06/28/2008, -1/+13I find it funny that Sonnybobiche is lecturing Canadians about capitalism when America is also a land of limited and incompetant wireless service providers that create the illusion of choice while artificially inflating prices for their own benefit.
If you want to see real capitalism at work, you should be looking at the Japanese cell phone market.
I always find it funny how Americans talk about their 'freedoms' like the rest of the first world doesn't have them, when in fact, they often have fewer freedoms than those countries. It's such an effective and convincing nationalistic catchphrase, that your politicians have become so good at taking away so many of them. - jfsimard79, on 06/28/2008, -0/+5Well, although some of my fellow Canadians will be upset by what you said, I have to agree with you. If we had a real free market we would have dozens of cell phone companies all begging for your dollars, thus competing, thus lowering their prices. But of course not, we have pretty much Bell and Rogers.
- fyzix, on 06/28/2008, -1/+4Hey douchebag, guess what? It's the monopolistic iPhone agreement that caused this. Can you guess who came up with that agreement?
Please remove your head from your ass before posting.

- RedHerringHack, on 06/28/2008, -0/+5Yessiree, corporate rape that is. I went to the site thinking "eh, it can't be as bad as all that" and I have to admit that it turned my stomach. The only way to fight is with your money. Don't buy the god damned thing; not worth it anyway. I have a first gen and I am sick of waiting for apps for it and the battery life sucks. My company bought me a blackberry, and I have to admit that it actually does more.
- kingcam, on 06/28/2008, -0/+1Nope, oligopoly, only way to fight that is to start getting Ottawa and Queen's Park (if you are in Ontario) to start making Antitrust waves. Rogers/Bell/Telus are not stupid enough to keep exploiting their cartel like in the past if the government threatens to step in; they will lower rates just enough to make everyone happy and protect their Cabal.
You see, this is the problem with the CRTC, it was put in place to regulate the industry (a good idea considering the nature of this country and the high cost of building a network here) but it has never had the balls to step up and help consumers.

- Yage2006, on 06/28/2008, -0/+6Hope you get sick and then go broke from the bills.
Ever wonder why people in the government get free health care and you don't?
FYI rogers data plans have nothing to do with socialized medicine.
- kingcam, on 06/28/2008, -0/+1You know, your medicare cabal is far far worse than our telecommunications scam. I wish the government would just socialize telecommunications too, make it a not-for-profit Crown Corporation.

- Khast, on 06/28/2008, -4/+3Yeah right. With the lack of competition...and Rogers being the exclusive iPhone retailer...I don't think it would do any good.
Besides, why do you think Steve Jobs insists on these contracts? The phone is trendy, cool, a must have device....so the companies which sign these contracts can get idiots who want to look cool screwed into long term commitments.
Ah, the price of being cool. (Pocket PC + Motorola Razr is all I need to have everything the iPhone can do. Browse the internet via bluetooth connection, e-mail...oh wait, I can record movies...)- jstephe, on 06/28/2008, -0/+0Can anyone confirm that Rogers has an exclusive contract, we know that they are the first but I do not recall Steve or anyone saying that the new contracts were exclusive deals, could we see a competitor in the near future???
- medj, on 06/28/2008, -1/+13I was really looking forward to the iPhone...sigh
- Danzinger, on 06/28/2008, -0/+64Canada is pretty god damn ***** in terms if cellular plan rates. The only two reasonable exceptions are Koodo (just starting up) and PC Mobile, both of which are prepaid. Rogers sucks every first-time buyer in with a cool phone and a 3 year contract, and after that they don't stop ***** you in the ass until you realize that paying the $200 early cancellation fee is worth it. I've had so many friends with rogers get their phone and start happily downloading ringtones, going on the internet, etc only to find themselves with a $200 phone bill. Does rogers give a *****? No. They wanted that to happen. All of their promos offer something like "unlimited everything for the first 3 months!" sucking poor kids into an unhealthy routine and then screwing them over big time.
Rogers also doesn't offer a single per-second billing plan. Why? Because they know that it's actually fair for the customer. Pizza delivery fags like me make TONS and TONS of 5 second "hey I just got outside" calls and they're all rounded to 1 minute.
I will NEVER, EVER go back to rogers.
tl;dr: ***** YOU ROGERS, I HOPE YOU CHOKE ON A THOUSAND DICKS.- magixx2, on 06/28/2008, -0/+2The problem is that PC Mobile and Virgin are both CDMA only which really sucks as pretty much all the good phones that you have good features are GSM.
- n8to, on 06/28/2008, -0/+5hey Danzinger..... not to burst your bubble but Koodo is just a subsidiary of those other *****-for-brains, Telus. Check it out
- Caulfield, on 06/28/2008, -0/+10There are only 3 mobile companies in the entire country. Every brand you hear of (including PC Mobile = Bell, Koodo = Telus) is running on one of the big three's networks. And Rogers is the only GSM game in town. Our protectionist government has left us to rot here by approving the anti-competitive mergers of ClearNET and Fido. So rather than having foreign companies come in and clean these *****' clocks, we're stuck paying the highest rates in the industrialized world. All to protect monopolist Canadian companies who can't hack it in a competitive marketplace.
Thank you, Parliament Hill. Go ***** yourselves. - lowlevel, on 06/28/2008, -0/+9Actually, the fee to cancel a contract is now $400. And guess what, all those free phones they added to the family plans? You haev to pay $400 PER PHONE to cancel them. Robbers Wireless indeed.

- vocalyouth, on 06/28/2008, -3/+6This rate seems high, but let it be known that many of us here in the US are not exactly pleased with who Apple has chosen as a wireless provider, either. I wish they would ditch these exclusive deals. They would make the carriers be more competitive with their plans and in the long run sell more phones, I would imagine.
- AnotherEdd, on 06/28/2008, -0/+38Rogers just gave the iphone a RIM job.. heh..

- RSterkenburg, on 06/28/2008, -1/+1There's only one wireless infastructure in Canada (well most of it anyway, we're pretty damn big) and all the major companies just pay to use it. ...but for some odd reason, there's no real competition. Everyone just gets bought out I guess.
- tilttv, on 06/28/2008, -0/+1Then don't charge so f*cking much for the plans!
- djdragon, on 06/28/2008, -2/+11Canad sucks for wireless.
Rogers is Fido and KooDo is Telus,
So that leaves only two providers, Rogers and Telus (Bell uses Telus towers). Even Virgin doesn't have a network, it's shared!
Wow what a choice- Kier, on 06/28/2008, -0/+2Bell and Telus share towers (Telus have a strong BC/Alberta presence, while Bell has lots of coverage further east). Homework, do it please :)
- thirdstage, on 06/28/2008, -0/+1Not only does Virgin not have their own network, all their wireless numbers are provided by Bell. Basically Bell/Telus and Rogers are in complete control of the wireless service. No wonder we pay so much for it.
- koogooshii, on 06/28/2008, -7/+15As a Rogers employee in accounts receivable I have to say pay your damned bills people! But seriously rogers will not be the only carrier of the iPhone, Vonage will be carrying it along with US carriers will be coming in as far as I've been told by rogers internal website, and for all of those with extreme hate, over 80% of rogers employees dont have rogers services because rogers sucks... hell they dont even offer ADSL anymore because of too many complaints....
- yabos, on 06/28/2008, -0/+7Huh? Vonage carrying the iPhone. You realize Vonage is VOIP right?
- samuel514, on 06/29/2008, -0/+2dude its just a Rogers employee... give him a break ;-)
- spyguy, on 06/28/2008, -0/+2I don't believe you at all. All full time Rogers employees get 50% off their cell phone fees. Why would you work for Rogers and not use your employee discount? Makes zero sense to me. I like working for Rogers and getting the discount.
- koogooshii, on 06/28/2008, -0/+1Well, at our call center most of us know how badly rogers ***** up, esp with switching accounts to ICM so much *****, but even before that, most people that i know dont want to deal with rogers crap, 50% is a deal but gotta weigh that against the million other problems, and maybe it wasnt vonage.... some company that starts with V though, virgin?
- sjps220, on 06/28/2008, -0/+2where's your 80% number coming from? I don't buy it at all. I think if anything, they'd have more because of their discount.
- thundros, on 06/28/2008, -0/+4Maybe Vodafone? It starts with a "V". Heck, any new competitor would be welcome.
- yabos, on 06/28/2008, -0/+7Huh? Vonage carrying the iPhone. You realize Vonage is VOIP right?
- lartones, on 06/28/2008, -0/+19I sure hope nobody gets the iPhone with these initial rates otherwise we'll all be screwed
- xero9, on 06/28/2008, -0/+9That's what I'm hoping, but you know people are still going to buy it :(
- jasonh1234, on 06/28/2008, -0/+5And so does Rogers.
- Infekted, on 06/28/2008, -0/+5sad but true!... tsk* tsk*
- xero9, on 06/28/2008, -0/+9That's what I'm hoping, but you know people are still going to buy it :(

I posted this in another story a while back.
The second the CRTC allows foreign telco's business in Canada, i'm switching to them. Its ***** clear the canadian telco's are gaming the system. Theres no other reasonable explanation for why the costs to gain the same service as americans, australians, AFRICANS, etc.... is so dramatically more expensive for us canadians.
The worst part is, realistically we should have lower rates then americans, as out infrastructure was built with tax dollars(not private companies putting them up, as is the case in America.) Instead though, because we have the greediest companies in any industry and country we pay dramatically more. No ones expecting people in Churchill,MB to get 3G/HSDPA access, yet all the major telco's use rural communities as the rational for why urban settings(where something like 85%+ canadians live. A higher percent then America) cant have unlimited/fast access.
***** outrageous. - zman14321, on 06/28/2008, -1/+13I'm sick of these telecommunication companies. I wish we as an internet entity could create our own 'Freedom ISP' and 'Freedom Wireless' with donated money, no bandwidth caps, no ridiculous charges, no *****. It's a dream.
- Redge, on 06/28/2008, -0/+2Yeah, some kind of "mesh networking" or "mobile mesh". If the technology is efficient and good enough, that would destroy the Telcos!
- xero9, on 06/28/2008, -0/+16Wow, like someone else said.. I felt sick when I read this.
Co-worker of mine showed me a page on thestar.com about their pricing was like "no way man, it's gonna be $30 unlimited for personal use". Then I went to rogers.com and saw they posted official pricing..
All I have to say is, this move really makes me want to pack up and move to the US. AT&T offerings are WAY better.- ninethirty, on 06/28/2008, -0/+8Well, I feel your pain and all, but move to the US over a phone? You should re-align your priorities buddy, because they're way the ***** out of way.
- xero9, on 06/28/2008, -1/+3I donno man.. Verizon FiOS over Bell/Rogers + $30 unlimited on iPhone for $30? I mean I gotta find a new place to live anyway..
- christophocles, on 06/28/2008, -0/+3***** yeah dude, i totally understand. i would wanna move too. Im stuck with Time Warner where I live (they used to be pretty good, but lately they have crapified themselves) and Rogers sounds way worse. I kinda want to move to a certain part of town just so that I can get Verizon FIOS.
It'll be a couple years before I'm ready to move so hopefully FIOS will expand a bit more and I'll have more options as to where I can live. It may sound silly but technology infrastructure is a really big concern of mine. That's the main reason I wouldn't move out into a rural area (even though I'd prefer to be more isolated).
- sjps220, on 06/28/2008, -0/+2I think you'll find that cell service in most places is better than in Canada.
- ninethirty, on 06/28/2008, -0/+8Well, I feel your pain and all, but move to the US over a phone? You should re-align your priorities buddy, because they're way the ***** out of way.
- ahughes, on 06/28/2008, -0/+28and Rogers will say to you, "We are sorry you feel that way, thank you for your valuable feedback"
- xero9, on 06/28/2008, -0/+3You nailed it!
I would LOVE to have the chance to get together with my fellow pissed off Canadians, to sit down and talk this over with the guys making these decisions over at Rogers HQ. Just ask them face to face what the hell they were thinking. It makes me mad
- xero9, on 06/28/2008, -0/+3You nailed it!
- RogueMountie, on 06/28/2008, -0/+16I have been screwed over by Rogers Wireless. I have been screwed over by Rogers Video. I have been screwed over by Rogers Cable. This isn't a coincidence, it's a ***** business model. I am already boycotting Rogers, and have devoted my life to convincing others to do the same.
Death to Rogers!- BinaryFragger, on 06/28/2008, -0/+3Rogers = worst Canadian company
They frequently knock at my door at 8 or 9pm asking if I'm interested in Rogers cable and Internet, they disabled my DSL connection for nearly a month after they 'upgraded' my phone service to Rogers Digital Home Phone (after they assured me that my DSL will still work), and they have horrible customer service (you wait on hold for 15 minutes only to immediately be transferred). Do a Google search for 'Susan Drummond rogers' for a good read.
