Rogers Is Confusing the Canadian Public Even More Now
canadianpress.google.com — Wow, what value!... Rogers' spokeswoman Liz Hamilton said consumers can decide what's best for them. Hamilton said consumers can pay $30 a month for a lower-use data plan to $100 for six gigabytes, which she noted is for heavy use such things as streaming video."They don't have to take the value.

Don't buy!! play the waiting game.- farfromsubtl, on 07/04/2008, -38/+1I'm still going to get in line for one. Sorry.
- MrCoke, on 07/04/2008, -0/+27thanks for failing us and being part of the problem Canadian wireless is so fubared
- wallryan, on 07/04/2008, -0/+21you, good sir, are a douche bag
- farfromsubtl, on 07/05/2008, -2/+1LOL! As if I am getting one in order to SPITE those who don't want me to buy one? Hilarious.
- Konstantino, on 07/04/2008, -3/+18Unfortunately, there are too many idiots here (in Canada) that will throw themselves into debt to get their hands on this.
- Jawsh91, on 07/05/2008, -1/+1...and who are they?
- PrincessSalami, on 07/05/2008, -2/+2Oh they exist Jawsh, they exist.... and they are terrible mindless consuming masses of them (kinda like apple zombies who dont know how big a megabyte is or how big the average email is). just watch, every 40+ year old that isnt in touch with technology will get one. Ive had so many people in that age range ask me about it and they truely are retarded.
God I hate my job...

- Fafnir43, on 07/04/2008, -0/+2Yay Simpsons reference!
- wallryan, on 07/04/2008, -1/+17***** i wish people would just wait to buy it. its people like "farfromsubtl" that ***** up the whole system
- starmanjones, on 07/05/2008, -0/+1> lower-use data plan to $100
>for six gigabytes, which she noted is
6 gigs is not high use. i routinely use upwards of a 100 gigs. these are bad numbers that are flying because the customers don't know what they use.- Giga, on 07/06/2008, -0/+06 gigs is pretty damn high usage for a cell phone...
- nogami, on 07/05/2008, -0/+1I could afford the rates they have now. But I'm smart enough not to. I'll happily stick with my HTC Kaiser until the lack of sales forces them to fix their plans.
I can't wait to see the heat when the early adopters start getting huge bills for data overages and the media rips Rogers a new one.
Shame really, all they had to do was match AT&T's plans and I would've been first in line. Oh well, Rogers' shareholders take the profit hit I suppose. - themastersb, on 07/05/2008, -1/+1I'm tired of the waiting game. Lets play Hungry Hungry Hippos.
- farfromsubtl, on 07/04/2008, -38/+1I'm still going to get in line for one. Sorry.
- brewno2k, on 07/03/2008, -0/+89Liz Hamilton should be fired.
- arobicha, on 07/05/2008, -0/+6The whole group at Rogers should be taken behind "the stupid barn" and put down. They can't supply a service worth a damn.
- ABadPerson, on 07/05/2008, -0/+6***** Rogers.
- DCJoeDogaswell, on 07/04/2008, -0/+54You almost have to admire the amount of balls it takes for a business model that needs to outright lie and/or confuse the very people they are trying to get to buy their product.
- jcaino, on 07/04/2008, -1/+9not to mention that their network sucks.
- evil-doer, on 07/05/2008, -1/+3their network is by far the best in canada. its the ONLY thing about them that DOESNT suck
- a1cd, on 07/04/2008, -0/+18When they introduced usage caps on their internet plans, you should have seen the BS they put out..
"Now you can only use 25gigs a month! This will help your internet experience improve!!" - ferkranus, on 07/04/2008, -6/+1"Both AT&T and Rogers are subsidizing some of the costs of the phone and are trying to recoup costs through the rates it charges consumers."
This is why they're charging these high rates. When they spend money, we spend money. They're just passing their expenses on to the customer like every business does. Economics!- Light11, on 07/05/2008, -0/+6its only a 200 dollar subsidization. thats $5.50 per month on 3 year contract. give me a break.
- ferkranus, on 07/06/2008, -0/+1Hey, it's far from ideal and probably borderline unethical (depending who you ask). But it's just the way our economic system is set up to work.
As consumers, we do have leverage...especially in large groups. But instead of exercising our right NOT to buy something - half of the people bitching will go and sign up with Rogers the day it's released anyway.
- PrincessSalami, on 07/05/2008, -0/+1Welcome to the cellphone industry in Canada where you can pay $25 for 4 megabytes

***** Rogers.- Fafnir43, on 07/04/2008, -0/+11Whoa. $100 for six gigabytes a month is highway robbery, speaking as a UK citizen who is /used/ to getting ripped off on things like this. But fifty cents per megabyte - FIVE HUNDRED DOLLARS PER GIGABYTE - thereafter? That's just sick.

Thanks alot fellas!- Light11, on 07/05/2008, -0/+6me too they ***** something up.
- guitarchitect, on 07/05/2008, -0/+0you should know that nobody - NOBODY - takes internet petitions seriously. How easy is it to completely fabricate a digital list of names and email addresses? It's a hell of a lot harder to fake a huge variety of signatures, which is why if at all, real hand-written petitions are taken seriously.
- nogami, on 07/05/2008, -0/+1They don't care about petitions, but they DO care about sales. Just keep telling everyone you know to hold off and don't buy the phone. If they see sales tank for a few weeks, you better bet they'll be making adjustments.
If we Canucks roll over and decide to take their plans, we deserve exactly what we get... - jimv1983, on 07/05/2008, -0/+1I am from the USA and just looked at Rogers.com to see what you guys pay. The Rogers 400 minute plan is $110. I pay $40 for 450 minutes. It has no effect on me but i definitely wish you guys luck on getting that changed. (I also took into account the exchange rate.)
Also, the chick in the video is freaking hot!

- tedhead2k, on 07/04/2008, -1/+20Keep digging these articles, people... we can still stick it to Rogers yet if enough people leave the iPhone alone.
- Fafaflunkie, on 07/04/2008, -0/+4Talk about giving new meaning to the term "forbidden fruit!" Looks like Uncle Teddy is up to his old tricks again. I say if you want an iPhone that bad, wait a bit and see if Robbers will be a bit more reasonable with their data plans. But I doubt it.
- RobbieCrash, on 07/04/2008, -3/+32How is this confusing?
Pay less, get less. Pay more get more.
Where the ***** does the confusion come in?
Canadian data plans, especially those from Rogers aren't confusing, they're just outrageous.- tsnd, on 07/04/2008, -1/+8I agree, there is nothing confusing about it.
Just bend over and take it basically. - benologist, on 07/04/2008, -4/+4The confusion came when people realised the Apple and Rogers weren't on a charity mission to get everyone an iPhone.
- Fafnir43, on 07/05/2008, -1/+7I suspect I'm feeding the troll here, but... The problem is that it's /so/ extortionate when compared to the plans available in other countries (notably the US) that Rogers has essentially taken a product a lot of Canadians were excited about and ruined it beyond recognition. This generates vitriol. Film at eleven.
- benologist, on 07/05/2008, -1/+1It's not trolling, just a harsh reality. It's not only a new phone but also its debut in Canada. Apple and Rogers know that for a little while at least they can inflate the price however much they want because the demand is there.
- solistus, on 07/05/2008, -0/+1benologist: when a company creates a monopoly and then begins inflating prices to several times the going rate in nearby markets for no reason other than to cash in on said monopoly, that's what we call an abusive monopoly. Your comment treated this as no more than any other company out to make a profit, and in a sense it isn't, but the monopolistic nature of this company means there are no alternatives when Rogers refuses to offer an unlimited plan at any price point and offers an insufficient allotment of bandwidth for many iPhone users at the price most countries' unlimited options are set at.
- jwdav, on 07/05/2008, -0/+1The confusion comes from the fact that I don't think there are more than two Rogers customers that have the same plan. The basic published plans are in place in the hopes of ripping off the casual customer who doesn't know better.
Dig deeper, grind their CSR's and all kinds of charges fall by the wayside, and free features get added. They classify customers into tiers to determine service and pricing (behind the scenes of course) and there are all kinds of grandfathered plans and options that no longer exist - or may exist if you know who & how to ask.
They float the iPhone plans hoping to catch some easy fish with them, but behind the publicised plans, they have now back-peddled to allowing some users (depending upon many, many diverse and unpublished rules) to simply move their existing plan over to an iPhone, and buy Data a la carte. Of course, none of their CSR's really know who is eligible and who is not, or whether iPhone features like visual voicemail will work or not ...
These guys are six days away from launch and they are headless rats.
- tsnd, on 07/04/2008, -1/+8I agree, there is nothing confusing about it.
- papervolts, on 07/04/2008, -0/+39Bell just offered unlimited data for $10 on the Samsung Instinct. Telus just offered unlimited data for $30 on the HTC Touch Diamond. The closest Rogers offers to that hits four digits. I urge everyone not to buy an iPhone from Rogers until they lower their prices. Send the message to all your friends and family. Call Rogers and threaten to switch because of their ridiculous data prices.
Either Rogers get crippled or we get what we want.- n8to, on 07/05/2008, -5/+3But how do those phones compare? Do you actually get internet or just ***** WAP browsing? I get unlimited data on my Blackberry but whoop-dee-*****-do. I want an iPhone with real internet.

maybe go to crackberry.com or pinstack or just google and find some ways on how to fully use your blackberry, Personally I love my Curve.

- PhoneGuy, on 07/04/2008, -2/+9I currently pay $95 for UNLIMITED data on Telus for my HTC640. It looks like a blackberry, but runs windows mobile. It ain't cheap, but it is UNLIMITED data.
I know Windows Mobile isn't perfect, but I have a Podcatcher installed, as well as my Audible book player, the DIVX player and I have my Software IP telephone client installed. There is not much else I need from a phone - and I certainly don't need to be $^* in my a$$ by Rogers for an iPhone. I gotta say, I am more than happy with my HTC phone.- elfuego, on 07/04/2008, -0/+4You should call Telus and renegotiate... right now they offer $30/month unlimited data for all smartphones as long as your voice plan is $30 or greater.
- PhoneGuy, on 07/04/2008, -0/+5Unfortunately, mine is a business plan - and the consumer plans don't apply to me.
- elfuego, on 07/04/2008, -0/+5@ PhoneGuy
You'd be amazed at what can apply to you if you threaten to cancel your service and switch to Bell. - PrincessSalami, on 07/05/2008, -0/+1You'd be amazed that when its time renew your contract and you dialed *611 and complained to Telus that service is ***** you want an iphone etc. at how much they will throw at you for free...
basically ignore any price on any handset and then proceed to ask for it for free along with free caller id and voice-mail and text messaging for 3 years.... your likely to get all or most of that.
but... most people are too lazy and just go for the "free phones" and never think to ask for free features.
- pradaaddict, on 07/04/2008, -0/+9I have $15/mo for Unlimited Data on the HTC640. You are realllyyyy getting screwed on that deal. It's not even a good phone and has the battery life of a very well used first gen iPod.
- PhoneGuy, on 07/04/2008, -0/+3I should qualify this ... this is not a consumer plan ... it is a corporate plan ... and while yes I get screwed because it is a business plan ... I get reimbursed for it ... so it my company that really gets screwed, the my company will not let us use a consumer plan ... and I get some pretty decent North America voice and data roaming ...
- elfuego, on 07/04/2008, -0/+4You should call Telus and renegotiate... right now they offer $30/month unlimited data for all smartphones as long as your voice plan is $30 or greater.
- orenshk, on 07/04/2008, -1/+34FTA: "But it's only going to change if Canadians vote with their wallets."
Don't by this thing. Play the waiting game. Hey maybe by the time Rogers come to their senses there will be an iPhone 3.0 (no sarcasm) - elfuego, on 07/04/2008, -0/+18Okay, here's the thing about unlimited data vs. caps that "should" cover the vast majority of people.
"Should" is a very unattractive word whenever you're selling something. Would you buy a car if the salesman told you it "should" protect you in a crash? Would you hire a babysitter if she said she "should" be able to perform CPR when your kid needed it? Obviously I'm blowing up the argument to include life-or-death stakes when at the end of the day the iPhone complaints boil down to money, but it's concerning to hear that the plans available "should" cover us. If Rogers was so confident in that 100MB/month figure signifying average data use, why not offer unlimited data and just forbid tethering? After all, by offering 400MB/month you might encourage people to use more than otherwise, just because they have it. No, I think Rogers wants to encourage high usage and reap as much money as they can, which is their prerogative as a business.
However, at the end of the day, caps and penalties make customers nervous. Nervous that they'll go over, nervous that they'll get reamed on overage. That nervousness is why people won't buy one unless they've got more money than brains. Unlimited data, even if you aren't a heavy user, gives you that peace of mind, and that's what people are happy to pay for when unlimited data plans are made available. You won't find many people who are thrilled about the iPhone now that it's gimped in terms of how much you can use it without having to worry. Personally, I'm grabbing a Blackberry on Bell or Telus... $30/month unlimited data is fine by me.- diggity_dank, on 07/05/2008, -0/+2We are playing a game of chicken with Rogers at this point. Rogers poisoned the well by charging so much for data over the last few years that people are VERY scared to use data at all on phone. And now they wonder why everyone is up in arms? They have basically painted themselves into a corner where they HAVE to give unlimited data for people to actually buy and use the next generation of phones. Or maybe they plan on selling nothing but RAZRs and Walkman phones for the rest of eternity.
- astericks, on 07/04/2008, -0/+17I have actually already made my decision a while back....NOT BUYING!
- chubbybubba, on 07/04/2008, -7/+1If you don't like rogers then don't buy their plan! All this sissy ass whining has got to stop. Bandwidth cost money and if a company wants to have you pay for it's use then you do or you don't. It's your own Damn Choice. If you can't afford to have an Iphone, then don't buy one. All your whining just makes me want to vomit in aluminum foil and eat it. (Oh, and while I'm at it... its called Ham not bacon.)
- Fafnir43, on 07/05/2008, -1/+4In Canada, their plan is the only available. And while bandwidth costs money, other companies seem to be able offer unlimited bandwidth at far, far, far lower prices. This is the problem. You *****.
- chubbybubba, on 07/05/2008, -1/+1Then don't buy the effin I phone dumb ass. They have a right to charge whatever they want. Get over it.
- diggity_dank, on 07/05/2008, -0/+1That is what we are DOING: trying to make sure everyone knows how ***** these plans are so they don't get tricked into signing up 'cause the phone is glossy. You get it?
- Fafnir43, on 07/05/2008, -1/+4In Canada, their plan is the only available. And while bandwidth costs money, other companies seem to be able offer unlimited bandwidth at far, far, far lower prices. This is the problem. You *****.
- longzero, on 07/04/2008, -0/+14I don't see which part is confusing. It's crystal clear. Rogers is saying "Don't buy the iPhone, a Blackberry is cheaper."
While stores with iPhones around the world will be swamped on July 11th, Rogers Store and Apple Stores will be empty in Canada.- ZimbuTheMonkey, on 07/04/2008, -1/+3While I agree with the sentiment, and I really hope that your prediction is correct, I'm afraid that the likelihood is that the iPhone will sell like hotcakes despite the ***** plans.
- MartinSaulnier, on 07/05/2008, -0/+0I've never seen the apple store empty in my life...ever. In fact there's more ppl in the Apple Store then there is in the whole Shopping centre. People will buy this because even though they complain... there is still lots of rich people who will buy this crap... ***** Apple, ***** Rogers.
- diggity_dank, on 07/05/2008, -0/+2They aren't going to sell iPhones at Apple stores in Canada (I think Apple is washing its hands of this whole mess). And I think people are actually underestimating the backlash. A lot of people will buy, but I'm guess about 1/10th the number that Rogers was origionally anticipating. Just a huntch.
- gregory533185, on 07/04/2008, -0/+5Till Liz that I said shut the ***** up.
- Coolspot420, on 07/04/2008, -1/+15When the iPhone was first announced, there were a LOT of mac fans who said that like all Apple products, iPhone was going to change the whole game.
The sad truth is that the iPhone hasn't changed anything. You STILL get raped on data plans, you still have to agree to long contracts, and you still only have 1 choice of a carrier. Its too bad because the iPhone is certainly a nice device, its just a shame you have to put up with ***** carriers to get it.- longzero, on 07/04/2008, -0/+0We can only hope that the change in price will come soon.
- bernardo202, on 07/04/2008, -5/+0For the iphone 3G on rogers, plans starting at $60 for voice and data isn't bad. hell, I just moved to calgary from saskatoon, where it's $60 just for voice plans with a few features! I currently have a 2G iphone that I've used for months but just hooked up up on data, and it's working like a dream (since Rogers just added the network support for apple products a week ago).
So just grab yourselves a 2G iPhone on ebay (from someone who wants to upgrade to the 3G iphone) and get it with data on Rogers without the 3 year contract for about 70 bucks a month!- sdipaola, on 07/05/2008, -1/+0you only get 150 voice minutes for the $60 a month and a penalty of 35cent a minute over. I can bet you didn't have this on any older plan post 1980.

... at least WAIT it out .... how many ppl regret buying DVD players with NO secondary fille format support for $1200 when they first came out ?.. - IggyPop, on 07/04/2008, -0/+10***** Rogers.
- say2k, on 07/04/2008, -2/+0ok, I'm a rogers customer and I'm current being jail raped on my data plan for my curve... $15 for 1.5mb... which I barely use the data because I don't want to go over. Not to mention I pay up the ass to get nearly unlimited calling... about $80 for a bunch of minutes and a vm/call display/ txt plan that includes some ***** don't need... So with taxes and all that junk, I pay about $100-110 a month for my plan. I have this thought: Fido. Yes, they are Rogers, but they are offering the same plans as Rogers for the iphone, but their call times are charged by the second. So I'm thinking I could switch to fido, cut my minutes in half with the $75 iphone plan. With the tax, system access and the $20 vm/txt/cd/and early evenings, I'm paying the same I do now, but I'm getting way more data. A question, we are belly-aching about data rates, and yes, being out and about and being able to check in on my asian porn is important, but what about wifi? With free wifi in a bunch of coffee shops and the like, why not just switch to wifi mode when you can? Isn't that the beauty of the iPhone? Built in wifi?
- yarrrdie, on 07/04/2008, -0/+2Having to go to a Rogers/Fido hot spot and switch to a wifi connection, which will most likely require some form of html login beyond a simple network password, is incredibly inconvenient. Furthermore, it's not seamless. You want this device to function properly without constantly having to switch modes or consciously monitor your usage.
- opticrime, on 07/05/2008, -0/+1I'm in much the same boat (with the additional complication of a family plan but that's another story) -- getting raped for Berry data charges. But at least with the Blackberry, I control my data usage.
My understanding is that the iPhone switches between wifi and EDGE/HSUPA, opting for the latter if it thinks the wifi signal is too weak. It's a device designed for unlimited (or at least extremely high bitcap) data plans. I've also heard (cmiiw) that it automatically downloads file attachments in email (versus the Blackberry, which doesn't download them unless you choose to grab/view the attachment). So, if someone sends you a 5MB attachment you don't care to view on your handheld, the data usage for Blackberry is 0KB; for iPhone, 5MB.- jwdav, on 07/05/2008, -0/+1The original iPhone seems to download smaller attachments that are formats it can read with QuickLook (pictures, html, PDF etc.) It doesn't seem to download larger files and formats it cannot read.
The 3G model will be able to read more file formats, so I would guess that the main remaining filter would be file size. It's not constant for me, but seems to trigger around 150K or so.
- jwdav, on 07/05/2008, -0/+1The original iPhone seems to download smaller attachments that are formats it can read with QuickLook (pictures, html, PDF etc.) It doesn't seem to download larger files and formats it cannot read.
- PantsSupreme, on 07/04/2008, -1/+11What a horrible company. I hope you Canadians don't give them a dime!
- Mr_Lyle, on 07/04/2008, -0/+20I'll go on the record right now and say that with these plans, whoever buys the iphone when it comes out is a ***** idiot. And you know that even with these outrageous plans, people will still buy these ***** things. Even some of the people who've been bitching here on digg will end up passing by a Rogers store at some point, see the iphone on display and decide on the fly to buy it just so they can show it off to their friends and walk around all cool. Well ***** you assholes! You're the reason why we have such ***** cell phone rates in this country. If no one buys, they'll have no choice but to lower the prices. And I'm not only talking about iphone rates, I'm talking across the board.
Look at these Rogers *****. They're basically taunting us. 'We know our prices are ridiculous but who the ***** are you kidding? You know people are gonna pay anyway, so just shut the ***** up and give us your money'. Well you can go ***** yourselves you sons of bitches. Your entire company can come stand in line by my house and eat my ass. I won't even charge you as much as you charge for your ***** services.- RadioVibes, on 07/05/2008, -0/+4Now that my friend, is the honest truth!
- LiquidFusion, on 07/05/2008, -0/+3Now THAT is a post.
- lukehh, on 07/04/2008, -1/+12The first two lines of this article DESTROY Rogers.
1. Apple iPhone in Canada is poisonously expensive for consumers
2. You'll get cheap rates on the iPhone if you don't buy one right away.
"The Canadian Press" just said FU to Rogers in a big way.
FTA:
'Apple's iPhone may have a poisonous bite for Canadian consumers who want the much-desired touchscreen phone when it finally goes on sale later this month.
Analysts said Wednesday that consumers will have to pay the voice and data rates set by Rogers Communications Inc. (TSX:RCI.B) if they want the high-end device unless early sales are slow.' - teamparadox, on 07/05/2008, -0/+3I know bandwidth costs money, more so on a cell network where the resources are far more finite then say on Comcast's network but there is no way it should cost $100 for 6 gigs of data. A more real figure would be...$60 for 6 gigs of data and im being very very nice allowing them to still make a large profit.
Hell a text msg which probably costs $0.0001 per msg costs $0.29 if you arent on a plan on most carriers. wtf is going on with providers on this side of the world? - newsboys, on 07/05/2008, -0/+7What I don't understand, why is Canada not outraged that over the past year or so, when both Rogers and Bell have put caps on their high speed internet (for home use - not phones), when they used to be unlimited. This has gone on with almost no protest whatsoever, but word of this happening in the States is causing so much outrage and is all over digg.
- RadioVibes, on 07/05/2008, -2/+2Cuz Canadians are stupid lazy pushovers. Simple as that. They are timid and scared to complain.
- Fiola, on 07/05/2008, -1/+4i hate to agree with you, but its true!
rogers has the worst bt throttling in north america, and we dont do ***** about it. They even block all encrypted traffic just so that you cant do the rc4 encryption that most bittorrent clients support now. Yes, ALL encrypted traffic, i get throttled trying to ssh into my school's linux server. Rogers should go ***** themselves. - PrincessSalami, on 07/05/2008, -0/+2WRONG! most people are stupid lazy pushovers...
They read the paper and watch the news and listen to the radio... they love all that garbage news pushed into their brains. And for most of them, their idea of getting news on the internet is msn, cnn and yahoo... In my opinion Social news is the best thing to come along in decades... especially after cnn and fox news's poison.
except I dont like the ammount of collusion that comes along to digg sometimes to "bury" or upmod certain stories to get to the front page... eg all the 'BARACK is the best human in the universe and theres no other choice, now lets all have his babies then watch more american idol or top model....... SUCH CONSTRUCTIVE ENTERTAINMENT!
BRAVO IDIOTS!
why cant we make more thrilling education and science shows?
Dimwits ***** is the answer.

- shawn1122, on 07/05/2008, -0/+1I don't know about everyone else, but the 60 gb upload/download cap that Rogers has does not really affect me too much. I hardly ever go over that amount. A couple years back I went over it by a GB or so and Rogers didn't do anything about it. So, it really hasn't been a problem for me. As for the bittorrent, I use the latest beta of uTorrent (1.8) and get 400 kb/s on some torrents. It isn't maxing out my connection or anything (which is supposedly 5mbps) but its fast enough for me.
http://forum.utorrent.com/viewtopic.php?id=31998- nmason, on 07/05/2008, -0/+0Rogers has ALWAYS had a cap on their cable internet. Ive been using it for the last 7 years or so. when i first got it it was 30gb/month, then 60, then 90, then 60 again. ive gone over many times and never got charged extra for it. Im not sporting a 10meg rogers connection, 95gb cap, plenty for me, and i download ALOT of movies and tv. The caps on the mobile data are just retardedly low, a 60$/month plan should gimme unlim voice and like 5gb. but noooo. thanks rogers, but ill be keeping my 6 year old Razr for the near future.
- RadioVibes, on 07/05/2008, -2/+2Cuz Canadians are stupid lazy pushovers. Simple as that. They are timid and scared to complain.
- Snoz, on 07/05/2008, -1/+4Rogers is more arrogant and pompous than a university professor.
- sd52339, on 07/05/2008, -2/+3the amount of whining over this being so much more expensive than blackberry or anything else is absurd. if you take the base plan of $60 they are charging $30 for voice and $30 for data. So for $30 you are getting 400mb of data while that same $30 gets you 300mb with a rogers blackberry for ANY application not just the "unlimited" browsing and email you get with bell and telus. speaking of bell and telus if you would like data for ANY application with your blackberry or windows mobile phone your options are $25 for 4mb, $40 for 8mb, $60 for 30mb and $100 for 1gb. as for the samsung instinct and the $10 unlimited "data" you are restricted to websites that are accessed only by the browser embedded on the phone, you do not have the full internet like you would on an iphone. keeping that in mind look at the LG VU on rogers, it is $20 cheaper and rogers offers the same unlimited "data" feature for $7. leave it to bell and telus to try and confuse and anger potential iphone customers leading up to the launch by advertising unlimited "data". funny how they make it seem so good yet they are also the only ones charging for INCOMING text messages next month! where's the negative press on that business decision?

then google opera mini. Problem solved unlimited data with a full featured browser.
However I do agree with the incomming text thing. My guess is Telus is tanking as reflected by its more expensive less feature rich addons... what used to cost 15 is now 20 and used to be unlimited texting but is now 250 msgs.
http://www.telusmobility.com/bc/wweb/how_bundle.sh ... - elfuego, on 07/05/2008, -0/+1If you're going to troll in favour of Rogers, at least have your facts straight. All the unlimited data plans offered by Bell and Telus that are trotted out in comparison to the iPhone (7-10/month for the Touch/Instinct, 30/month for everything else) are not restricted to specific apps or WAP access only... they're truly unlimited. Anything the phone can handle that uses data, you've got no restrictions on use (sms notwithstanding). Blackberries can do a little more, so they cost a little more. You can't tether, but I buy a phone plan for my phone, not for my laptop.
The only one doing any confusing here is you, by suggesting that Rogers' WAP-only offering for the same price is even remotely comparable when it isn't.
In all fairness, Safari on the iPhone kicks the ***** out of every other mobile browser offering, but that's just another reason why Rogers has botched this launch -- what good is mobile web access if you never want to use it for fear of going over?

- sdipaola, on 07/05/2008, -0/+6ALL - THE PRESS ARE MISSING ONE OF THE BIG ISSUES HERE.
It is not data minutes but voice minutes that they are killing you with. Yes the data minutes suck and what everyone seems to focus on but the voice minutes are:150 weekday voice minutes for the $60 a month and a penalty of 35cent a minute over. This is outrageous and unheard of post 1985. Remember it is a phone and after all the web stuff you will be using it as a phone - so can you really go back to 150 minutes a month?- Trublmakr, on 07/05/2008, -0/+1 If you want an iphone (or Blackberry/Windows mobile device etc.) to take advantage of whats cool about an iphone, then a reasonably priced unlimited data plan is absolutely necessary. Nobody wants to stress over how many kilobytes it will cost to download a new song or watch a TV episode from itunes. In my opinion, it's neither voice airtime minutes OR data rates that are the real problem,.. if Rogers is forced to dial back their greed-o-meters and provide lets say a $30/month unlimited data plan, just watch what happens to the roaming charges - they'll figure out a way to make up any revenue shortfall somehow. What we really need is a US carrier to blow into town, set up shop and demonstrate to the old boys club in Toronto what it means to actually give a ***** about your customers.
- pattherat, on 07/05/2008, -0/+2They're missing even more than that:
They are not mentioning the silly omission of things people want in order for Rogers to further pull money from the customer.
- no included caller ID, $15 minimum in a bundle to add it with other useless features
- 9PM evening calling start time, $20 to add the option to make it 6PM
Really, Rogers is bad on all levels. Even if you look at their voice only plans, they are still ridiculously overpriced.
Good times in Canada, yay...

- HumanRecalled, on 07/05/2008, -2/+2@Rogers also scoffs at criticism that it has a monopoly on the iPhone. The company has built its network on a technology that has made it the only carrier in Canada capable of running the phone. "That's no accident," Ms. Hamilton said. "It was a visionary move."
hahah really built ? ***** you Ted Rogers you bought what was already there and bought out Fido as well !! Ted Rogers never built ***** !! No't it's no accident but it's a fluke that Rogers happens to run GSM !!! SO thanx to Steve jobs lack of innovation ( with complaints before on the 1st Iphone ) he in turn once agin with this 2nd run never created a Duel network phone or hinted at even attempting a CMDA phone !
I blame APPLE period !! For creating a ***** phone that forces you to comply with ***** companys !

http://www.thestar.com/printArticle/285406 - moosepile, on 07/05/2008, -0/+3The problem is that Canadians won't "vote with their wallet" as the article, and many others suggest.
They will vote with passion, ignorance and desire and sign 3-year contracts.
Average Joe will not realise how the plans suck until it bites him. And then it's too late, he either upgrades his plan, or faces a nasty cancellation fee.
If you actually believe that everybody who signed the petition was planning to, and no longer will, buy an iPhone, that's 30,000-ish lost sales. A drop in the bucket.
Add a dose of realism, half of the signers still will buy one, and even more will not actually care, because they'll find a way for their employer to buy them.- diggity_dank, on 07/05/2008, -0/+1Have you been paying attention to the scale of this backlash? I guess not. This is unprecedented and it is not just about the iPhone, the iPhone is just the last straw. Canadians are polite people, but only for so long.
- doleboy, on 07/05/2008, -0/+2i wish this article was proof read. it's littered with typos and grammatical errors.
- grant1080, on 07/05/2008, -0/+3Unfortunately Canadians are going to buy with their hearts and pay the price. Rogers is the worst company I've ever dealt with.
- tacitblue, on 07/05/2008, -1/+1I've asked my company to buy me one. (yes they pay the monthly charges)
- outlaw686, on 07/05/2008, -0/+3People should leave rogers if they can and take a look at the other devices out there, it's the only way they'll learn
- wayneomac, on 07/05/2008, -0/+0I would like to just say that Rogers is a monopoly in Canada. I have switched because they are the worst company when it comes to customer service and rate plans. I went to Telus because they gave me an incentive to switch. I got unlimited data and a few other hardware gifts. Rogers needs to listen to customers before shareholders because if they do not they will loose both. I hope that with the new bandwidth auction there will be some GSM competition.
- AdmiralAcbar, on 07/05/2008, -0/+1And THIS, ladies and gentlemen, is why I do not own a cell phone.
- N00bicals4543, on 07/05/2008, -0/+1just wait until Globalive or Quebecor come into town next year with their HSPA networks and maybe wait for Telus and Bell's switch to HSPA next year too. then unlock the iphone and use it on their networks!
- Red1Delta, on 07/05/2008, -0/+0It always feels like we are mice running in a huge endless maze.
- Joomal, on 07/05/2008, -1/+1Unfortunately in business, I need to supply my guys with either blackberries or treos. The iPhone is just a toy. Either way, treos and blackberries cost just as much as the iphone, if not more for data usage.
Rogers will screw the businesses over and over and has been doing so for many years. If they lower prices on the home user market, businesses will be outraged and demand lower prices as well.
The iphone is a teen fad good for children... but if they can get the prices lowered, it will benefit businesses as well so I say go for it.- jwdav, on 07/05/2008, -0/+2How about we leave the "insert phone model here" is crap stuff alone for a few days and focus on something that may do all of us some good - spanking some Canadian TelCo's.
- Joomal, on 07/05/2008, -1/+1Well it is a toy. There is zero security on the iPhone, it breaks very easily, scratches like hell. If you were to give these to people in any serious business, emails would be stolen, data hijacked, and it would come back ruined in a matter of months.

- artfuldodga, on 07/05/2008, -0/+2The only way to get Rogers to lower rates sooner rather than later is to NOT buy the iPhone from them and wait things out. I have a feeling a lot of folks here are going to buy the phone and use one of rogers plans, which would be disappointing... but I have my fingers crossed consumers will do the right thing
- OpCzar, on 07/05/2008, -0/+3Rich/foolish folk logic: Wow, look at all these people refusing to buy the iPhone. Now, I'm sure attract attention when I get one.
- outsidethebox, on 07/05/2008, -1/+1Wow, my first story ever submitted on Digg and it made the front page. My nerd senses are tingling! Thanks all!
In other news. I'm just hoping that Rogers will tweak these plans with all this public and media backlash...but who am I kidding.- eastmanweb, on 07/07/2008, -0/+1At the end of the day, this issue has nothing to do with hope. If everyone in Canada refuses to purchase the iPhone for at least until after the end of the first fiscal quarter it's available, I can guarantee that Rogers will lower their prices. Companies always respond to the bottom line.
