Rogers Canada announces Iphone 3G plans...PURE RIPOFF!!
forums.macrumors.com — The base plan comes up to 92$...with only 400MB of data, and NO unlimited plan.
- 316 diggs

- brendanryder, on 06/27/2008, -1/+48this is complete *****, pardon my french. The iphone will not be a success with the plans. we are getting rapped. there is not a chance in hell i will pay that much for those crappy data plans. Notice how they emphasize the "Unlimited Incoming SMS".
The cheapest plan will cost you:
$60.00 - Price plan
$00.50 - 911 Access fee
$06.95 - System Access fee
$15.00 - Caller ID
$82.45 - Sub Total
$04.13 - GST (it's actually $4.1225, but we'll round up)
$10.73 - Total Taxes
$86.58 - Complete Monthly Total.
or 93.18 with PST.
Heres a link to the plans http://www.rogers.com/web/content/wireless-product ...
Send an email to Liz Hamilton, of Rogers Wireless,
elizabeth.hamilton@rci.rogers.com, or call her (416) 935-8710 and tell her how you feel.- drspacemonkey, on 06/27/2008, -9/+2You forgot how they also hide a note saying you get unlimited free wifi... at Rogers and Fido hotspots. Translation: forget using your wifi at home.
- imcquill, on 06/27/2008, -0/+9you can definitely use your own wifi at home. Or anywhere else you can get wifi. Rogers has nothing to do with that.
- samuel514, on 06/27/2008, -2/+1seriously ? forget using wifi at home !? can't be real...

**Bill C-555 is aiming to eliminate extraneous wireless costs like data overages and system access fees for Canadian consumers and enterprises in the hopes of increasing adoption and overall quality of life. Best part of all? He wants all Canadian mobiles to be unlocked.** - Sil369, on 06/28/2008, -0/+1Just curious, how much are Americans paying for the equivalent (150/300/600/800 min) ?
- HolyChimp, on 06/28/2008, -0/+1Not sure about the US, but in the UK it's £30 for 75 minutes and 150 texts (the new crappy tariff they added for the 3G iPhone), £35 for 600 minutes and 500 texts, £45 for 1200 minutes and 500 texts or £55 for 3000 minutes and 500 texts. All those plans incude unlimited free data, not to mention the fact that we don't use those minutes to receive calls, and caller ID has been free as standard on all mobiles for years. So for your base $90 tariff we could get 1200 minutes, 500 texts, unlimited data, unlimited thecloud.net wifi and caller ID. And all those prices include VAT, so what you see is what you pay.
There's also gunna be a pay as you go tariff, but no word on how much that's gunna be yet.

- QuarterSwede, on 06/27/2008, -2/+28Complete garbage. I really feel for you Canadians. There is no way I could even begin to afford that and even if I could it wouldn't be worth it.
- FXPooky, on 06/27/2008, -1/+27And to think I was actually planning on ditching Bell in the middle of a 3 year contract! To hell with that idea.
- leadx, on 06/27/2008, -1/+25Screw Rogers... I'm done...
Canceling everything I have with them and letting them know it's over the iphone rip-off! - davewelsh79, on 06/27/2008, -2/+21It's illegal to say the plan is $60/month when it is clearly $67.45/month. 911 fees and system access fees aren't some special cost. They go straight into the general coffers of Rogers. They give some ***** about being needed for system upgrades and stuff like that. Well then what does the $60 go to? List the price as $67.45 or DIAF.
- Sil369, on 06/28/2008, -2/+4Virgin Mobile in Canada = no BS fees.
- Rikkochet, on 06/28/2008, -0/+2Nor with Koodo or Solo.
But those are all on the Telus network, thus if you want to use a GSM phone, you're stuck with Rogers, of Rogers' pet company Fido. - uhhNo, on 08/06/2008, -0/+1Virgin Mobile pay as you go FTW (I pay ~$25/(3 months)) with caller id and all that stuff included. However, if you plan on using the phone for more than just texting and the odd 1 or 2 minute call once in a while you might want another plan.

- staxofmax, on 06/27/2008, -2/+3Sure, a Blackberry doesn't have the eye-candy that the iPhone has, but it has several advantages. Namely an actual physical keyboard, and the fact that it's email capabilities are practically untouchable.
Don't knock it till you've tried it.- threepio, on 06/28/2008, -0/+1I've got a blackberry and I would hand it over for an iPhone and take the $600 ETF without a thought...the browsing is ***** on it.
But I'll ENJOY that browsing so much more now knowing that it's not costing me a ***** penny on top of my plan and that I don't have to worry about some stupid 400mb limit. ***** YOU Rogers. I'm sticking with my BB on Telus until you get your ***** together.

This is "unlimited data"
1 PDA smartphones (with TELUS mobile Email only) and BlackBerry® smartphones (with BlackBerry® Internet Service only).
2 Unlimited instant messaging available with Windows Live Messenger on PDA smartphones only and BlackBerry® Messenger on BlackBerry® smartphones only.
3 Web browsing and application usage not available on BlackBerry® smartphones and is charged at pay-per-use rate of $8/MB on PDA smartphones.

- samuel514, on 06/27/2008, -0/+9and the evening start at 9PM ... thats a joke! 150 minutes calculated by the minute isn't enough for a 60$/month plan
- bishonen, on 06/28/2008, -0/+2Unless you need to be outside major cities, go with Fido.
Pretty much everything is the same plan-wise.
Evenings start @ 7pm default (5pm with the $20 pack), and per sec billing.
I wouln't dare go through Rogers again. Just the customer service alone is sickening. It takes forever to talk to a person and half the time its the wrong department.
Fido has treated me right (with an occasional oops, given) and it's never hard to talk to a real person.- samuel514, on 06/29/2008, -0/+1Thanks for pointing that out, I'll be checking if they change their plans ..
- bishonen, on 06/28/2008, -0/+2Unless you need to be outside major cities, go with Fido.
- Arkanok, on 06/27/2008, -1/+6These plans are about as pleasing as the idea of looking at dog turds...
- nicolask7, on 06/27/2008, -1/+17what were you really expecting from Rogers ???
- Galaxylander, on 06/27/2008, -0/+5Disgusting.
- TnTBass, on 06/27/2008, -2/+5Sadly, unless a CDMA version of the iPhone comes out, Rogers has all wannabee iPhone users by the balls.
- pradaaddict, on 06/28/2008, -0/+4Telus is developing a GSM compatible network that will launch in Q4. They plan to launch it with the iPhone
- TnTBass, on 06/28/2008, -0/+3[citation needed]
Seriously? Are your ***** me? - pradaaddict, on 06/28/2008, -0/+1I'm not, but its far from official. Telus has been planning this for years because they realize the limits of the CDMA network, they can't offer Nokia phones and are at a disadvantage to Rogers when it comes to launching phones faster or in tandem with Rogers. They finally realized this when the RAZR launched 8 months after it did on Rogers.
But it costs millions to design and implement this system so its going to take time. - moosepile, on 06/28/2008, -0/+1I too have heard Telus is moving to GSM. But that's no small venture, so don't expect anything less than iPhone v4 from Telus.
And they'll probably STILL make the ***** SIM-less.

- stabbyh, on 06/27/2008, -0/+7E-mail Rogers and Apple. I know I've started bombarding them. Apparently it's done some good in the UK, where they started with bogus rates but switched to an unlimited. Voice your disgust.
This GSM (not to mention general wireless) monopoly in Canada is disgusting. Good job regulators.- MegaHz, on 06/28/2008, -0/+1http://agora.ic.gc.ca/AuctionGCLF/bidderRoundData. ...
the current wireless spectrum auction results updated as each round closes. The top listing for the alberta company is Shaw. - HolyChimp, on 06/28/2008, -0/+1Data has always been unlimited on the UK plan. They even removed the fair usage limit specifically for the iPhone. They did make the rates better though, basically knocking about £10 a month off of each tariff around January time.
- MegaHz, on 06/28/2008, -0/+1http://agora.ic.gc.ca/AuctionGCLF/bidderRoundData. ...
- staxofmax, on 06/27/2008, -1/+4Wow, and I thought that Verizon's rates were garbage....
- chrisk9, on 06/27/2008, -2/+11It's not just Rogers doing it. We Canadians are getting screwed by our wireless providers. One example is the charging for voicemail as an extra! As if you can use your cellphone without voicemail. A friend has a limit of around 5 messages in their voicemailbox. More like false advertising when all companies are promoting these base plans but thereafter adding on additional ridiculous fees.
- happycat, on 06/28/2008, -0/+0Virgin mobile throws in voice mail, caller ID, call forwarding, and NO SYSTEM ACCESS FEE, and NO CONTRACT (option) with their plans.
Yes, virgin is just another big bad corporation, but so far I find their terms and support outstanding-the support staff actually speak English without some thick almost incomprehensible accent! Isn't that amazing?
I wish people would look outside the Bell-Rogers-Telus triad because there are some alternatives out there and if enough people started switching to them then maybe the big3 might actually start caring about their customers.

- pradaaddict, on 06/28/2008, -1/+3I was fully prepared to pay a $380 ETF with Telus just to purchase the iPhone 3G but now these plans are making me seriously re-think it. I was going to buy two of them, one for me and one for my spouse. There is no mention of family plans and there are horrible data caps when you consider MobileMe, Youtube, picture exchange or large email attachments.
There needs to be three options and family calling should be always unltd.
$60 ~ 250 minutes, 200 text, untld data, caller id, visual voicemail
$90 ~ 500 minutes, unltd text, unltd data, caller id, visual voicemail
$120 ~ 1000 minutes, unltd text, unltd data, caller id, visual voicemail (for executive clients) - invasi0n, on 06/28/2008, -1/+1Apple could have sold these phone the same way they sell other products.

- jakyll3010, on 06/28/2008, -1/+2I've been using iPhone on Rogers for about three months. When i first signed up the guy gave me three months umlimited data since I was coming over from Bell and they wanted to make me happy.
It ended up that I average 150MB a month on the iPhone... I received a $500.00 bill !!! But one quick call to rogers and it was reduced to $123.
The plans Rogers are offering, for Canada, are actually decent..... but no where near AT&T.
Rogers is killing CityTV, why not kill portable computer innovation while their at it? - Corrosionx, on 06/28/2008, -1/+2My friend has Rogers 3G wireless internet at home and it costs him 45$ , how do they get up to 92$ ???
- Yage2006, on 06/28/2008, -0/+1I feel bad for your friend why would he do that to himself?
It sucks unless you have no other alternative dsl/cable so on . - Corrosionx, on 06/29/2008, -0/+1Because he's an impressionable impulsive buyer who always calls me _after_ he bought something stupid.
But if I could get on that 3G wireless internet anywhere with a portable device, something like an iPhone, and not pay for any phone service and use only Skype or seomthing, I'd be pretty happy.

- Rikkochet, on 06/28/2008, -0/+2Not stupid people, businesses that require that service. It's highway robbery and they can get away with it because business requires data.
Sure, they'll rope in a bunch of kids with part time jobs who want something flashy, but they ultimately set their sights on the enterprise.

- RogueMountie, on 06/28/2008, -0/+6I have been screwed by Rogers Wireless. I have been screwed by Rogers Video. I have been screwed by Rogers Cable. That's not a coincidence, it's a ***** business model.
I have known people who work for Rogers' customer service. They tell me how they are trained to deal with the customers who eventually realise how they have been robbed.
I have already been boycotting Rogers for years, and I try to convince anyone else I can to do the same.
Death to Rogers! - hara001, on 06/28/2008, -0/+0I really hate canada for this. Everything here is more expensive than almost anywhere else, because there is no competition. Almost all government agencies responsible to regulate the market, play it safe so no company go bankrupt. In the US, if no one goes bankrupt, then it simply means the regulations are too tight.
We pay a price for it. This attitude is responsible for a 40% price increase on all goods.- kingcam, on 06/28/2008, -0/+1Actually, things have been getting much worse in the telcom sector percisly because the government is cutting back on regulations, now there is a power vacuum so the telecoms can basically do whatever the ***** they want. The CRTC was nessisary in the beginning otherwise no one in this country would have a phone outside of Toronto, face it we are too spread out. What the government should do is turn Bell back into a Crown corp., and force them to offer services to Canadians at cost.
Another thing that has ***** us over is that when the system access fee was put in place years ago it was actually used by the government to improve infrastructure, good idea right? Well apperently not, people complained and they stopped collecting, now it goes to Rogers/Bell/Telus and now they bitch that they do not have adequate infrastructure to support the growing need. - hara001, on 06/28/2008, -0/+0kingcam, the reason I want to leave is because people really believe the crap you say, and therefore I see very little hope of change. The cost are so expensive because, to protect the industry, the CRTC doesnt want to let in more competitors. They fear bankruptcy at all cost, because the canadian society has a fixation on the continuity of jobs. If someone looses its job it's seen as the worse possible thing that could happen to you, even if you find a new one in a month. The USA sees a lack of competition has the worse possible thing. Therefore, the US gets more job per capita and better products/services at a cheaper price. But the USA job turnover is higher, which now a day is sometime a good thing in itself.
If you want to start your own cellular company, you would ask the CRTC for permission. The CRTC will tell you that you can't because there is enough already and that they fear a company may go bankrupt if they let you in. In the US they will always let new competitors in and let the market decide if there is, or isn't enough competitors. This attitude gives the US cellular plan 80% cheaper than what we have here.
And please do not ever mention size again ever. Australia gets the same price as the US and its population density is even lower than Canada. The difference is that Australia's CRTC behaves the same as the USA does.
- kingcam, on 06/28/2008, -0/+1Actually, things have been getting much worse in the telcom sector percisly because the government is cutting back on regulations, now there is a power vacuum so the telecoms can basically do whatever the ***** they want. Most of the new data options are for any device, third party apps and tethering.
BIG change from the usual ways.

I don't see how that is a good deal, considering all the other ***** I pay for, my bill tops out at $100 a month. I've been with Rogers for 10 years, but I'm considering switching to Telus. Sigh.
- bishonen, on 06/28/2008, -0/+1Agreed.
- MrSteamTank, on 06/28/2008, -0/+4Please do not complain to the company. Complain to your local MP. With monopolies in place Rogers could really care less about what you think. Seriously, what are you going to switch it for? Bell? They are in bed together since they raise prices at the nearly the exact same time. Make politicians aware of this and hopefully something on the legal front can make them scared enough to change their policies. Too many far poorer countries have far superior services to Canada at much lower rates. People should really protest about this abuse to the government.
You can´t vote with your wallet in an oligapoly. It just doesnt work because you have no real choice and no real competition. You have to vote democratically and get laws changed.- happycat, on 06/28/2008, -0/+0Of course you should complain to the company. Call up or email Rogers and especially Apple and voice your dissatisfaction with their plans. Bitch at Bell for their system-access fee ripoff charges. Phone up Telus and say their plans suck and demand better ones. If they get enough complaints then they might change their practices. The problem is that everyone complains to each other or in online forums, but rarely do they vocally direct their anger and dissatisfaction towards the cause. (eg. Rogers, Bell, Telus).
Or better yet, refuse to buy an Iphone until they offer better rates. Anyone who gets one at these rates deserves a punch in the nose for being so stupid. :O
Cancel your Rogers cable and give the ridiculous iphone prices as a reason and you are so sick of Rogers ripping you off. Heck, everyone says their is nothing on anyways so why not.
The point is not just complain, but direct your complaints in the right direction.
Does complaining to your MP ever do anything? I wrote to mine twice about the Canadian DMCA but didn't receive any reply, not even a caned one.

- icopro, on 06/28/2008, -0/+0So I call Rogers today to ask about having to sign a 3yr contract in order to even get the iPhone ($199, $299) and how existing customers (me) who are not elegible to get a upgrade would have to deal with that. In short the rep told me I would have to sign up for a second phone number and either pay the $400 ETF or switch to the $10/month plan and pay for two lines. In short there is nothing in place for existing customers who are not elegible for upgrades to get an iPhone. I then asked them if I broke the iPhone in front of the sales person would I have to get a 3rd line in order to buy a replacement for the phone I just broke since they aren't doing any buy out options? He said he couldn't help me at this time, and Rogers appreciates my business......
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
OPEN LETTER TO ROGERS:
In what could most likely be your most successful phone launch in your history, you should really think about your existing customers and how to keep them happy. To only half prepare for something as big as the iPhone release by only providing options for new customers and not your existing customers is not very good business. I have been a loyal customer for almost 15 years and you tell me I need to get a second line and a second 3 year contract in order to buy a piece of hardware?
I truly hope that you are preparing something for existing customers who may or may not be elegible for a upgrade and have just not updated your customer services reps with this news. If not I would recommend that you seriously reconsider your position with your existing customers and their path to getting a new iPhone.
I know this rant is sorta all over the place but I just got off the phone with the rep and I just couldn't believe what I was hearing..... - hartley, on 06/28/2008, -0/+1For 400mb data *with a per kb charge after, I assume*, I would demand to purchase an EDGE iphone. Why would I want to break my monthly limit even faster?
Reminds me of what Time Warner is trying out in Texas with the usage billing. - Tyrghast, on 06/28/2008, -0/+1I don't live in Canada, but phone plans in general are way overpriced. I pay by the minute, which for me is more cost-effective since I don't use my phone a great deal, usually short calls to work or simply confirming wherever it is I'm meeting someone at (my friends and I mostly communicate with ventrilo, and usually only call each other if someone is missing from whatever we're doing together).

Dear Ms Hamilton
I have just seen your proposed pricing scheme for the iPhone 3G. It is truly appalling and represents an abuse of your monopoly position within the market. These plans can not be considered high value by any independent analysis compared to the rest of the world. This represents a new low for Rogers relationship with ordinary customers. You need to simplify your tariff structure, include a reasonably priced unlimited data option (by all means subject it to a 'fair use' limit) and a reasonable number of minutes. By the way, evenings do not start at 9pm in my book ! I shall be sticking with my Blackberry until you see sense. You are going to lose thousands of sales if you fail to appreciate the strength of feeling on this issue.
regards
Dr Andrew Crean
