- guytoronto, on 10/11/2007, -0/+22LOL! Downloaded music with the purchasers name encoded in it is going to push Linux over the top? Over course! That's all it takes!
So, your name is encoded in your files. What privacy concerns do you have? People might steal your music and find out your name? OH NOS!
Encoded Name ≠ DRM - Heilige, on 10/11/2007, -6/+28I don't think they expected the huge demand of people wanting to upgrade their tracks, 1 million people trying to get DRM-Free tracks all at the same time will grind ANY file download system to a screeching halt.
- MatthewBlack, on 10/11/2007, -3/+17The network does seem pretty busy. After the initial launch fever has died down I'm sure service as normal will resume
- guytoronto, on 10/11/2007, -2/+15"Am I the only one here who doesn't give two *****?"
I recommend more fiber in your diet then.
"Most of the music I enjoy will never even hit iTunes, with or without DRM."
Well, that's stupid, seeing how indie artists can get their music posted to iTunes relatively easily. - MasteRR, on 10/11/2007, -1/+11You better go remove your VIN number and license plates from your car, get rid of your social security number and drivers license number, and figure out how to use the internet without an IP address, then...
- MasteRR, on 10/11/2007, -0/+9@technopundit
It's watermarking, not DRM. You can still play the files anywhere that can play AAC, including on Linux and non-ipods (I tested both this morning :P )
The only reason it would mean anything is if you are sharing the files, which is dumb anyway. If you don't care about copyright enough to share it then why are you buying it in the first place. Go back to your torrents. - Zero2aHero, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6You haven't been looking for very hard.
For all of my indie (DRM free) needs I go to either emusic, amiestreet, or insound. Between those 3 sites I have found pretty much anything I've ever wanted to buy. Adding iTunes to the fray is exciting and will add even more variety. - zeptobyte, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6I still think they ought to call this new service iTunes, and the old, regular service iTunes Minus. I prefer the idea of paying less to get a DRM-riddled, lower-quality version and the regular price to get a high-quality version that I can do with what I like. Rather than paying regular for the damaged goods and extra for something that works as it ought to.
Same thing, it's just all in the view of it. Don't view $1.29 as more expensive. View $.99 as cheaper. - skim1420, on 10/11/2007, -4/+10Yeah I ran into problems, first with enabling the Plus and then multiple download errors while upgrading songs. I don't know if this is related, but about a week back the iTunes store also wouldn't let me purchase any movies - it kept saying that the movie's not available in the U.S.
- greenamp, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5Their servers are completely swamped, and have been since iTunes Plus went live. Been trying to buy a +album all day but previewing the songs is basically non existent. I guess everyone is upgrading their libraries to DRM free.
- MasteRR, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5All I can say is that they play perfect unmodified on both my Linux box and my iRiver (with Rockbox). Hooray for that!
- Zuhaib, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4Yeah it seems that way, i am getting a lot of Time Outs trying to download the remaining 11 tracks that it is switching to non-DRM. And the one track that is downloading at dial up speed. Ugg.
- leer317, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4I was able to get my hands on those two Spice Girls tracks that I wanted after a few delays... overall, slow, but not bad!
- neuropsychguy, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3The store was slow today but I didn't have any problems upgrading my songs or with program crashes on my Vista machine.
- Coopjust, on 10/11/2007, -5/+7Problems? I couldn't buy anything. I couldn't even change my preferences on iTunes; looks like the demand was more than Apple thought.
Hopefully (likely) Apple will have the traffic crunch resolved within a week or two. - Technopundit, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3Don't ask questions. Just accept.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1I had a similarly flawless experience upgrading 23 tracks on my Mac Mini. This was about 6pm Eastern time, maybe the rush was over by then.
- kevinway, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2I made a few purchases on it, to help show the labels that there's a market for DRM-free music.
Everything worked without problem. Here's to hoping it helps pave the way for more DRM-free music, because in all honesty, I'd prefer purchasing to piracy. It'd be easier for me. - jcdickerson, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1STILL waiting to get my last tracks for the Sinatra album I bought last night. Geez, Apple did NOT anticipate this much demand....
- nrbelex, on 10/11/2007, -2/+3It's not really a review. It's more of their flawed experience with this half-baked software. I can't upgrade my tracks either or switch into plus mode. Hopefully things will calm down soon and I can give it a try but its hard to write a review when the system is working yet...
- CSpencer, on 10/11/2007, -2/+3I'm surprised they didn't anticipate the traffic. I just purchased a whole album and every single song has failed to download. Not only are way more people downloading, but there also downloading files twice the size. Traffic will probably drop of drastically after today.
- meatwad64, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1i bought a whole album and it was the first album i've bought on itunes. I broke my copy of adore from the smashing pumpkins and was shocked that they had some tracks that were drm free. The only thing was it was 12.99 i'm not sure if its the price for drm free albums or because it had 16 tracks.
- Zero2aHero, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2I've had a $15 iTunes gift card that I've been holding for when they open the DRM free store. I've had some bizarre problems, but I did get what I wanted. I noticed that some of the artists I search for aren't coming up when I search for them, I have to browse through the store and pull them up by the genre they are in.
For anyone wanting to give the DRM free stuff a try, check out...
Keren Ann - Nolita
Camille - Le Fil
Some nice Sunday morning French pop. Camille is a bit more bizarre, but Keren Ann is lovely. - chrisgeleven, on 10/11/2007, -2/+3Upgrades went fine for me when I got home. I think they got most of the kinks worked out of the server (plus the number of people hitting the store probably dropped a little). Downloads were a little slower then normal, but not bad overall.
- Schda, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1I was having problems previewing tracks and trying to buy them, but for upgrades I only had two songs listed. One was an old Paul Robeson song, but the other was Good Vibrations by the Beach Boys.... not realizing I had any Beach Boys music I did a search on my library and apparently I did have Good Vibrations by Marky Mark and the Funky Bunch as a ripped MP3. So now I think I got a Beach Boys song for 30 cents so it's not all bad.
Hopefully it's cleared up by tonight and I can buy an album or two. - MacParrot, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1More than any other legal service I would suspect.
Don't like Apple or iTunes? Then don't use it. You would think that some posters on Digg would have a better use of their time. - spicycauldron, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0I think a surprising number of sites and news outlets are playing down this complete disaster. I've been trying ever since the launch of iTunes Plus to upgrade my tracks with the insane 'all or nothing' deal. I can't download. It can't even add the songs to my cart. There must be so many people trying to download gigabytes of upgraded DRM-free material. Then, to add insult, we find out our usernames and email addresses are encoded in the tracks meaning if they do, by some miracle, get online - and it can happen not deliberately but by, say, a sibling doing it or even a friend - then it not only means they accuse you of theft but your email address and username, which you probably use elsewhere as well, are 'out there' in the public arena. Nice one Apple. NOT.
- 06metzp, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1Thank you, ars technica, for clearing this up for me. This morning when I tried to find out info about iTunes plus, nothing worked. I thought this was Apple, and stuff was supposed to "just work." Let's get moving, Apple. People want their DRM-free music, and we don't want to wait for it.
I suppose I should clarify. People want /some/ of their music DRM-free. There are plenty of songs I hardly listen to anymore that I don't want to spend another $.30 on. When I finally found the "upgrade my library" button (it magically appeared on the iTunes plus page of the iTS after I had viewed it a few times and searched around other places), I wondered where the "upgrade this song" and "upgrade this album" buttons were. I'm sure I'm not the only one. - benmhall, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0I think complete disaster is a bit of an overstatement.
As of June 3rd, I was able to log in to the Canadian iTunes Store, upgrade my existing EMI purchases (only one album, unfortunately) and purchase the new Norah Jones album as a 256kb DRM-free album with no real delays. Yes, there may have been hiccups on the first day but that hardly constitutes a disaster.
It will be fantastic if Apple can get everyone else on board. Before now, I would look at any other MP3 store first, resort to iTunes last, and then have to burn to CD and re-rip because I mostly play files in Linux/on a non-Apple MP3 player. I can now skip all of that hassle and am able to listen to songs on my iRiver running Rockbox. AND, the songs sound fantastic.
This was a great move by Apple and I applaud EMI for being the first to hop on. I wasn't at all surprised to learn that Apple encodes your user info in the files. As has been suggested, this is fairly easy to remove if it bothers you, though I don't honestly know why it would.
Oh, and when I right-click on a iTunes Plus file I finally have the option to convert to MP3. So if the encoding of user information really bothers you, you could always do that.
iTunes Plus certainly is good for me. No DRM, higher quality than almost all existing stores (you can get FLAC files on Zunior for about the same cost as iTunes) and the ability to play on non-Apple hardware/software. Sounds fair to me.
If anything, that their servers had trouble keeping up to demand sounds encouraging to me. It serves as proof that there is a real demand out there for these restriction-free options. Assuming piracy doesn't hurt sales, there will finally be solid proof for the RIAA that people using DAPs and MP3s aren't all crooks and that making purchasing high-quality DRM-free tracks makes more sense than punishing good customers with broken CDs and bad DRM schemes. - JasonHilton, on 10/11/2007, -2/+2I can't even get the installer to launch in Vista. Something about VBScript not installed or disabled.
- Avalontor, on 10/11/2007, -7/+6actually it's none of your business what I do with my diggs, STFU
- JMaelstrom, on 10/11/2007, -4/+3Lol - my music is always DRM free - Don't buy from iTunes...
- Solistca, on 10/11/2007, -4/+1ah, who cares about windows users anyway.
they use windows for god's sake. - dcrainedigg, on 10/11/2007, -3/+0I;ve already performed the upgrade, and it did take a few minutes to restart the first time, but other than that it seemed to work fine. I'm actually very curious to see how this whole DRM-free thing turns out.

lmfao - Technopundit, on 10/11/2007, -7/+2Spice girls.

Say it's not soooo... They are so perfect and wonderful and puppies and unicorns...

I'd like to recommend a new employee.
His name is Milton... - Technopundit, on 10/11/2007, -7/+2Be patient. There's a sucker born every minute.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -9/+3Same, I hope the company fades into obscurity like Amiga.
- Technopundit, on 10/11/2007, -7/+1lemmings
- NerdcoreFalling, on 10/11/2007, -10/+3Am I the only one here who doesn't give two *****?
Really, unless iTunes releases its whole library without DRM, I still see no reason to pay attention to it. I support the artists and I still buy a CD or two every once and while, but its not the fans' fault that the artists are getting pennies from the $20+ (Canadian dollars) per CD, its the labels'. So don't pull that guilt trip on me.
Most of the music I enjoy will never even hit iTunes, with or without DRM. I have enough trouble finding torrents, let alone finding it at the local retailers. I'll be happy when independent artists can actually make a living and not tie their listeners to annoying systems of command and control. - Heilige, on 10/11/2007, -11/+3Uh, so who just dugg down ALL the posts below MatthewBlack???
- Heilige, on 10/11/2007, -13/+5PFFWAHAHAHAHAHA!!! HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!
- Technopundit, on 10/11/2007, -11/+2Like lemmings to the sea...
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -11/+2i love all the problems apple is having lmao
- edstate, on 10/11/2007, -13/+4It's still SLOW AS *****. Ever since 7.0... thanks Apple! ...You have a few thousand songs, and more than 10 smart playlists and you are boofoo'd. Yay. Please fix this, ya ***** douchebags.
