- MBHoy, on 10/10/2007, -2/+26Hm, I wonder how long that desk will stay free of clutter? Whenever I get mine looking half that good, it always seems to clutter itself back up within a week.
- Jhorra, on 10/10/2007, -9/+31That computer would price for around $4,000. For that much money it had better make other computers around it curl up in a fetal position and cry by what it can do.
- spdorsey, on 10/10/2007, -3/+21But your Dell does not run OS X. It's that simple.
I work at Intel. We were using Macs long before the Intel switch. When the CEO (then Craig Barrett) would see our work stations, he would get all bent out of shape because we were using Motorola processors, and not Intel's. Our reply was "When OS X runs on Intel PCs, we'll start using them. It's not about the hardware, it's about the efficiency of the OS." Fortunately, our wish came true.
I stand by that comment - the Mac OS makes all the difference for me. I work in video editing, motion graphics, and graphic design. OS X is a necessity. We have a Maya workstation that runs XP 64-bit, and it's ok, but I still prefer OS X for all my creative needs. - colincornaby, on 10/10/2007, -3/+21Isn't the 2.66 ghz Mac Pro $2500? And he says he ordered it stock.
Why do all the PC guys always act like every Mac must cost $4000? - Cybrwolf, on 10/10/2007, -2/+18Hey, at least it is original content (photos and text) so cut the guy/gal a break, and let them make some money!
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -6/+18It does!
- shinelikeitdoes, on 10/10/2007, -3/+15call me a fanboy or whatever but the fact is, i was completely anti mac like a lot of the people on here until about 4 months ago when i purchased an iMac out of curiousity (mostly exploring alternatives to the nightmare that is Vista). the iMac was such a pleasant surprise that i wound up selling it to my work and using that money towards a mac pro.
first off, even the imac with its out of the box 1gb of ram, easily outperformed any windows machine i have run with 4gb of ram. apple has the advantage of a new and optimized operating system that doesnt have to deal with layers upon layers of crap made to handle older apps the way windows does.
with my mac pro, i immediately upgraded to 5gb of ram...and its nice to know i have an os that can actually utilize ALL of it..efficiently.
there are little habits you get into with windows that, while they are not a big deal, when you switch over and realize you no longer have to do them its so ...liberating. my mac pro is the first machine i have ever used that i felt merited the term "workstation". when i sit down at it, i know i can get things done and focus only on the task at hand (and not the task manager).
i'm not a gamer, i'm a designer. but this thing eats up and spits out anything i can throw at it in photoshop, and like the reviewer, i have, at times, accidentally had apps like final cut pro or aperture running in the background...and never knew the difference. these babies perform.
the standard graphics card is not the greatest in the world, but the one game i do play from time to time (WoW - and yes i know its not a game for graphic benchmarks) runs flawlessly and looks perfect on 22in monitors. everything else i need for real world applications runs perfectly.
im sure bootcamp works well, but i am waiting for leopard before i give it a try (and a game that merits any reason to want to go back to windows) - spyraled, on 10/10/2007, -0/+11The beauty behind it lies in actually using the computer and installing a hard drive yourself. It's so ridiculously simple that you're left wondering why other companies haven't done it this way in the past. It's not just like installing a hard drive in any other computer I've used.
- dgblackout, on 10/10/2007, -2/+13stock dual 512 chips, then a 2gb ram upgrade on 2 1gb sticks, 3gb total, matched pairs.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -4/+15I want one, but it definitely has to be the fresh model. That model is over a year old. Just think of what the next one will contain. Very good review.
- Slovenian6474, on 10/10/2007, -1/+11Or cleaned up for the shot. That's what I'd do.
- superkendall, on 10/10/2007, -1/+10We do care about media related tasks - the cards Apple ships with are more than sufficient for editing and viewing even 1080p video. Heck, even the Mini with inegrated graphics can view 1080p.
It's only gamers that care about the ultra top of the line 1FPS increase video cards. - inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+9A little research would have answered that question... 2 pairs, 8 slots capable of 16Gb of RAM Max.
- Glenn, on 10/10/2007, -3/+11I completely agree. Well overdue for updates. Probably will be an all 8 core line soon with new graphic options.
- DaffyDuck, on 10/10/2007, -1/+9The commercials are geared for the consumer products. The Mac Pro would be considered a Pro product (obviously).
- Zippo, on 10/10/2007, -0/+8Using one as well right now (my work computer... it's not actually mine)... tis very, very nice.
I'll also note the thing is very, very quiet... - MacintoshSauce, on 10/10/2007, -0/+8I have a Mac Pro (2 X dual core 3.00 GHz) and I absolutely love it. It runs everything so nicely, and I cannot wait to install Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard on it when it is released to the public.
- Slovenian6474, on 10/10/2007, -1/+9From me, "one of those gamers out there": Looks pretty good. I see no reason why it shouldn't run games just fine (native or Bootcamped). Review was pretty nice too. It's nice to see Mac reviews that aren't all about comparing/bashing PCs.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -4/+11I'm an old Mac guy. I've seen them come and go. But I've had my G5 Pro for almost a year and it is more than sweet. Quiet, fast and cool. I'm a designer and there is nothing I can't do and do quickly. And to all you gamers out there, the games are coming, but you can always switch over using Bootcamp to XP or Vista.
- DaffyDuck, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6"For a price this would sell for, I could get a PC half as expensive and twice as in performance."
Proof please. - DaffyDuck, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6x = .5?
- DaffyDuck, on 10/10/2007, -1/+7Ramble- go ahead. Show us the parts list and prices.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -4/+10I just installed a Mac Pro 2x2.66 in my main edit suite. $2200 from Apple's web site. It smokes. 5 gigs RAM, 4 TB of eSATA storage, Blackmagic interface, 1080i HD for less than 5 grand, baby!
- DaffyDuck, on 10/10/2007, -2/+8Go ahead and show us a 2 Xeon dual core system for under a grand. I'm waiting.
- DaffyDuck, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6"You can buy a Dell Precision or an HP workstation that is more powerful, is more future proof and has more features for less that the MacPro, and are a better value."-
This is not true. Try adding 2 Quad core CPUs to a Precision and it will be more expensive even though they are not offering the 3GHz quad core...they have the 2.66GHz. That's a pretty big deal when you consider that Intel is likely to charge much more for a 3GHz quad core than a 2.66GHz. So the Mac Pro is both faster and cheaper in this case. As for HP, I'm not sure if they even sell dual quad core machines. - Glenn, on 10/10/2007, -7/+12Thanks Chris!
- Spuy767, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5I don't know, 6 months ago I got a 8x3.0 for 3500 with a student discount, it pretty much ***** smokes anything else I've ever used.
- danielwsmithee, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5They're around 20% for retail laptops. If you count everything desktops, corporate/government they are 3-5%
- Chris24, on 10/10/2007, -12/+17Great review Glenn!
Now I want a Mac Pro, even more. - takamalak, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5Your mom called. She wants to give up custody. I ALWAYS use condoms now.
- Shiftgood, on 10/10/2007, -10/+15nope. you cant. you suck. and thats a fact.
- rowlodge, on 10/10/2007, -3/+8ron paul front page everyday is the definition of creepy people digging.
- arkive, on 10/10/2007, -2/+6"you cannot understand that it's just horrible compared to a PC"
What's funny about that is that I'm a Windows network admin, and a Mac user. - MacParrot, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4You can build a quad-core Xeon workstation with all the same specs for $800? Any chance you could post links? Unless of course you don't know what you're talking about.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -1/+53-5%. Not 20.
- streak, on 10/10/2007, -3/+7"the hard drive installation process scared me, it looked a little more complex."
WTF? Upgrading the hard drives is dead easy. Silly "review". - manitoba98xp, on 10/10/2007, -0/+41) I assume you meant "Mac user", not "MAC user". When you say "MAC user", you are either shouting "MAC", or using the acronym for Media Access Control (as in MAC addresses).
2) What's wrong with getting a desktop? For high-end needs, they are a necessity. I'm not aware of a Mac notebook (or a PC one for that matter) that has a 2 dual-core Woodcrest Xeons, 3 (or 5) gigabytes of RAM, a discrete graphics card, 750 GB of hard disk space, and still have a somewhat tolerable price. (Heck, you could even eliminate that last point!) While notebooks are often a better choice, please do not generalize and discount desktop computers altogether. - greatblackowl, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4That price doesn't include an apple display, which Jhorra probably included in his estimate.
- Jhorra, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5That doesn't mean you shouldn't add that to the price of the computer he is reviewing. He is reviewing a machine that has those components in it, so the total price has to be the total price of the machine, including the extra pieces.
- sirmo, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5I will always buy a Mac laptop. Apple laptops have the best software-hardware integration. but I just can't make myself make that same switch when it comes to desktop. There are too many reasons why PC hardware gives Apple a run for its money. When it comes to the OS, OS X is great but for work Linux is all I need and for gaming XP is still the best option.
- superkendall, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5If you'd bother reading replies to your post you'd see you were not accurate, how is being inaccurate honest? The odd math of the Dell fanboi, I guess.
- Slovenian6474, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5stfu. I think everyone is sick of hearing that _______ computers are better.
- MacParrot, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Some people actually do order all their upgrades from Apple. Shocked the hell out of me too. My chiropractor just replaced his Dual 1.8 G5 Mac Pro with a Quad Core Mac Pro outfitted with 4GB of RAM and four 500GB drives for his home recording studio. I was shocked by this as I would have done it for him for just the cost of the components (I owe him since he recently gave me a MOTU Traveler and a very high quality XLR microphone that he no longer needed for free). He of course has more than enough cash to do this and said that he didn't want to be bothered doing it himself.
- manitoba98xp, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Either or. All Apple computers come with OS X, and the number of people running OS X on beigebox PCs is negligible.
- ucg1, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3You have to be a complete dumbass to love editing the Windows registry and think that is an advantage. Use a UNIX or UNIX-like OS, like Linux, OS X or BSD, if you want to see what being able to "access the root settings" is like.
What's more open and accessible?
- An UNIX-based OS that has an open source kernel as well many of the various open source userland tools, with good documentation on the parts that are proprietary and closed (I'm talking about OS X here)
- A completely closed source OS that has a crappy user interface as well.
Next time you are using OS X, open up the terminal and have a look around. It's not as open as Linux or BSD, but much more so than Windows. - knightboat, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3"Somebody tell me why I'd need this?"
If it doesn't seem special to you, then it's not for you. That's cool. Don't sweat it and keep doing what you do with the computer of your choice. I don't see why you have to come in here just to crap out FUD about viruses and brainwashing and low fanbases. It comes off insecure and childish when all you're really trying to say is "I like PCs better." I promise you'll get along in life just fine without worrying about what systems other people use and whether or not they're drinking Jobs's Kool-Aid. - DaffyDuck, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3As for the 3GHz dual Quad core machine, you couldn't build one yourself if you wanted to right now. As for a 2 dual core 2.66 lets see...
Dual Core Woodcrest - $720
Dual Core Woodcrest - $720
Motherboard ~ $250
1GB Memory ~ $100
250GB Hard Drive ~ $70
Case/Power Supply ~ $200
Keyboard/mouse ~ $80
Wireless networking (b,g,n) ~ $120
Firewire ~ $40
Graphis Card ~ $70
Windows Vista ~ $130
= $2500 (same cost as Mac Pro) - jkoke, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Dude, either you're lying and trying to spread doubt about Macs, or there's something wrong with your system. I have the same system, except with the 2.66 procs, and I've seen a beachball maybe twice and both times it was a Firefox/Flash issue that was hanging the browser. Force quit and it was back to normal.
If you're really having a lot of beachballs and slowdowns, you need to get your system checked out. - macbookpromat, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3The only issue with your asking of all the graphics cards out there is that Intel Macs run EFI boot ROMs and the GPU's don't they're still running good old BIOS ROMs. You also need drivers for those cards and as far as I see it, ATI and N'Vidia aren't going to do it. But the idea of a Mac with one processor (Core 2 Duo of course) and standard non server RAM is something Apple should have thought of ages ago.
- MacParrot, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3And yet you can't figure out digg's reply system or spelling checker. Interesting.
