- Kaioshin, on 10/12/2007, -9/+29The article mentions the thing has two buttons twice. I can count four on mine.
The left one, the right one, pressing in the scroll wheel and that side-thing (squeezing the mouse).
So much for that review... If he couldn't notice that... - mateo60, on 10/12/2007, -6/+22I have the wired one. I really wanted to like it, but I hated it. It feels over-engineered. For my personal tastes, I find that Microsoft makes my favorite mice period.
- nofxjunkee, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14I recently bought a wired mighty mouse, and as a huge fan of my Logitech MX700, and Logitech in general, I can say that it's actually a decent mouse. I can see some not liking it, but once you get use to the scrollball it's hard to go back. Now if only it had decent thumb buttons like on the MX700 for back/forward... squeezing for a 4th button is ok, but not amazing.
- liuping, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11Why do some peoplpe keep saying it only has two buttons? Even ignoring the sqeeze buttons, there are three buttons on the mouse. left, right and the scroll ball. It works perfectly for me as a dash board toggle....
And it is super accurate for me, so I'm not sure what the reviewer was complaining about. - Giever, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11"When will Mac users fail to realize that they're blinded by their love for Apple?"
From what you just said, I have to assume that that is what they are currently experiencing now, do you mean, "When will Mac users realize that they're blinded by their love for Apple?" - BrianEnigma, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8All these comments about "why doesn't it have 5 buttons? 8 buttons? 20 buttons? A brazillion buttons? More buttons are better!" just seem silly to me. In the Windows world, I have used a 5 or 6 (I forget) button Logitech mouse and hated the experience. I programmed all sorts of useful actions into the buttons (back, forward, minimize, close, etc.) and always found it was easier to use the keyboard shortcuts like I had always been doing. What was worse was that occasionally I would accidentally hit a button on the mouse and perform an unintended action. If a coworker sat down to use my workstation for a bit, they would accidentally hit a button without fail. Every mouse's >3 buttons are in different places and do different things, causing an inconsistent and broken user experience. I eventually disabled all but the main three buttons.
In my experience, two buttons (plus scroll wheel/ball) is fine in Windows and OS X. Three buttons (plus scroll) is mandatory in Linux--gotta have that paste--and anything more than that increases the chances of erroneously hitting a button.
Currently, I am using the wired Mighty Mouse with Fedora Core and my only gripe is that it is far too easy to accidentally scroll when you're using the center button/ball to paste text. I have never bothered to program the squeeze button. It's just too awkward of a gesture. - kevinski, on 10/12/2007, -10/+17Apple mice are usually quite poor in terms of design. The fact that this is supposedly a two-button mouse is hilarious, considering the fact that - from what I've heard - it's not even possibly to press both buttons down down at once. Some mouse gestures in Opera, then, would be inaccessible. Furthermore, the scroll ball is a joke. It's far inferior to a scroll wheel, as scroll wheels can tilt, which actually acts as two more buttons. This is quite useful in first-person shooter in which there is a lean function, amongst other things. I absolutely cannot see how this mouse is worth $70. When will Mac users fail to realize that they're blinded by their love for Apple?
- harpdog, on 10/12/2007, -8/+14" I had an iMac with the wired version of that abomination."
The wireless mouse uses a completely different tracking system to the older wired version. They are not the same beast.
Within 5 Minutes of using this new mouse I was amazed. - plasticated, on 10/12/2007, -5/+11Terrible review awfully written.
- G5geek, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Dont hate me for sying this but this is not a "who likes which mouse better" story.
I personally use the wired version and i find it quite useful. I find it plenty erginomic and i never have a tracking problem. the only complaint i could have is that the ball is a little too easy to move. thats it. Who knows with WWDC coming up in 8 days somthing crazy might be announced. ( you know apple "oh, and there's just one more thing...") - Kizzard, on 10/12/2007, -13/+18It still:
1. only has two buttons.
2. Is not ergonomic
3. according to the article, doesn't seem to be particularly accurate even with the laser.
Considering a mouse is the most used peripheral on a modern computer, I think they still have a long way to go. - FluffyArmada, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6markormesher : I was *really* hoping that I would not live long enough to see the words "borg" and "genital" in the same sentence...
- CedanticPunt, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6*speculation*
Maybe they wanted to test the water and see how well it went before committing the time and money to producing a Bluetooth version? - saggygrandma, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7I think he is refering to it being a two button mouse just to seperate it from the standard apple single button mouse. but yeah i kinda agree
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7the wired version is very ergonomic, at least for me. it has a low-profile and i'm not bending my wrist to use it. it also feels really natural to use once you spend an hour or so with it. I can rest my wrist flat no problem. the scroll is really nice, but if you're heavy-handed you'll probably not like it. I broke the scroll on a first gen version, but comp usa replaced it and i haven't had a problem since. i haven't used an apple mouse since i started using their computers back in '97, but this one i like.
as far as tracking goes, i've never had a problem, but I also haven't spent more than $50 on a mouse, so i may be missing out - MioTheGreat, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7I love my MX518....Except the black logitech metal thingy is starting the wear off from all the use...It's half silver now.
- ChiKoo, on 10/12/2007, -6/+9I think I'll just stick with my Logitech MX518. It's the best mouse I've ever used.
- dcharti, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3jwk3114: Last I remember, Apple includes software for both Windows and Mac on a CD that comes with the Mighty Mouse. Did you check that yet?
- CedanticPunt, on 10/12/2007, -6/+9"Is not ergonomic"
I can only speak from personal experience, but my current Apple Bluetooth (non-mighty) mouse is far more ergonomic for my hands than Microsoft's Intelllimouse. But I do have large hands, which don't sit well with the bumps in the Intellimouse. I also find it too high, which causes pains in the tendons at my wrist. Something I don't get with the Apple mouse as it's much lower to the desk. But that's just me.
You've gotta find something that's comfortable for you, as everyone's hands are different.
On a similar note, I also find some of the buttons on the Intellimouse (such as the right side one) to be largely useless as you have to use the first knuckle of your little finger, which is practically impossible. More buttons != better, in my opinion. But then again, I tend to use the keyboard for most things anyway... - harpdog, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3The new wireless mighty mouse will work with 1 or 2 batteries so when using it with just 1 AA battery it feels not much heavier than a standard mouse. It also has not noticable lag for normal computer use. I am not a gamer so cannot say how well it performs under those conditions.
- markormesher, on 10/12/2007, -10/+13OK fellas, lets address one point. Those logitech mice look like something that the borg may use for a genital protection device. Don't get me wrong, on my desktop machine I use one, but only because my desktop doesn't have that certain look to it. When you get down to how Apple designs, they look for continuity of design, even with a silver MacBook Pro the Mighty Mouse looks damn hot. The operating system itself doesn't need 5-8 buttons, most of the functionality (at least the way I have it configured) is where i move the mouse (Bottom right corner: expose. Top Right: show desktop.) Honestly though? This guy didn't mention that it is a 5 button mouse, you can configure the two side squeezes seperatly, and pressing down on the scroll button brings up dashboard.
In all honesty, it was a bad review, too much of a cliff notes. And if I hadn't switched to a Mac about a month ago I would probably be with you on the bashing of the Mouse. Here's some advice to you, next time you buy a computer that you want to be fast, buy one of the new MacBook Pros, install Boot Camp and XP on it, runs faster than anything I've ever used. It also runs HL2 and Episode 1 at full graphical quality for 1 1/2 hours. And soon (I guarentee) you will become a Mac person too. - EvlD99, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Microsoft's line of wireless optical mice (Intellimouse and Intellimouse Explorer) will run off one or two batteries as well. After using one for years the only benefit of two batteries is that it will last longer (around 5-6 months).
- DevilsRejection, on 10/12/2007, -11/+13I had an iMac with the wired version of that abomination. Couldn't stand it after a few hours so I went back to my Logitech MX 1000 which has been a laser equipped mouse for longer than a year now.
Not my fault Apple can't use the latest technology, in a mouse that not only looks but feels amazing in my hand too. - Blueshrike, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I'm a PC owner who began using a Mac at work because all of us have them. We have the latest up to date stuff, so naturally I ordered the first Mighty Mouse when it came out, expecting a very cool apple refined experience.
After one week with the thing, it became mighty clear that a simple Microsoft scroll wheel mouse was much easier to use and control. Did you know you have to lift your left finger before you right click? Can't rest both and then lift one or the other. This is unacceptable. The wheel itself, while feeling ok, doesn't give me quick evenly spaced scrolls. And the side button needed entirely too much force to press in. I gave it to the administrative assistant and went back to my $29 mouse. A very surprisingly unrefined user experience IMO. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3this guy's review is infinitely better: http://paulstamatiou.com/2006/07/30/review-apple-wireless-mighty-mouse/
- soupisgoodfood, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2@CedanticPunt
I find the same thing. I really like the MS Intellimouse, but I've always found it too high. I like the Apple mouse much better for hight, but I don't like the squeezy sides and prefer 2 seperate buttons on the sides. I also find it's harder to keep the button down while dragging and repositioning the mouse, even though it does have the 2 small places to hold on to it. - vashmyvindows, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Does your el-cheapo mouse have 360 degree scrolling? Is it bluetooth? Can it work on one battery or two? Is the on/off switch a cover for the laser as well?
I don't like the Mighty Mouse, but you're just being ignorant. - jwk3114, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I have one and it works great. But the one thing that sucks is when I switch over to Wiindows running boot camp it does not work. Hopefully they will come out with a patch in the near future to remedy this problem.
- Ireland, on 10/12/2007, -6/+7@ markormesher, no not Borg. It looks more like a Romulan Warbird.
Behold the "Logitech Wirbird":
http://img83.imageshack.us/img83/5964/logitechwarbird72sq2.jpg - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I got to use that mouse in an Apple Store a week ago and it was really a good improvement. It's about time a mousewheel existed on a Mac mouse.
- rblinne, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I just got my new mouse here. The reviewer seems to give the impression that it is less accurate than a wired mouse. If the comparison is against the wired mighty mouse I found the bluetooth version more accurate and more responsive. Other than that it has all the same strenths and weaknesses of the wired mighty mouse including the inability to press left and right buttons simultaneously.
- tomoniki, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The biggest question on whether or not this mouse will be any good is the battery life, if the battery runs out each week there will be no point in using it regularly. Is there a suggested lifetime of batteries?
- norz, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1I use 4 buttons of a five buttons dell mouse. The fourth button is actived by the thumb, and is quite useful: under windows xp, I use it to minimize the active window, and I never hit it accidentally.
However the fifth button is too far to reach it easily with my thumb, so I never use it... :)
(http://www.dell.com/content/learnmore/learnmore.aspx?c=us&l=en&s=gen&~id=mice&~line=workstations&~lt=popup&~series=precn&ref=CFG) - bgeipel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I am a relatively new Mac user - got a Mac Mini at home and a 13" MacBook for portable use. I had the Apple Bluetooth mouse which worked fine for me, but I hated not having a real right mouse button. When the Bluetooth wireless mouse came out, I ran out and got one and I am generally very happy with it. The default configuration in the setup software does not activate the right mouse button, but that is a simple change. Mine is configured for left and right mouse buttons as per a normal mouse, the side squeze activates expose and pressing down on the scroll ball activates dashboard. The scroll wheel itself seems to work just fine.
I cannot comment on accuracy because I really do not do much Photo/Graphics editing - the accuracy is fine for my application. The Bluetooth startup is quick and I have had no problems with it as of yet.
The mouse is a bit small for my hands.
So, if you want a bluetooth mouse with right button and scroll wheel that has an Apple look it might work for you.
Barry - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2i actually use the squeeze (side) buttons for Dashboard. it took a while to get used to (i just stopped triggering it by accident recently), especially in Photoshop where i tend to get granular with my movements, but now i like having it accessible in this way. it won't replace my hot corners, but sometimes it's convenient.
i haven't had the problem with the scroll wheel/ball that a few people have mentioned though. - kevinmtu, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1edit...
- jflamm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I just got my wireless Mighty Mouse a couple days ago and am using it with my Macbook. If you turn the mouse off and back on again - it does not work and has to be repaired. On a rare occasion this does work. If the computer lid is shut and the mouse is turned off - again no luck. If the mouse is turned on and off a second time - this usually works albeit with a long delay. As a check, I paired my Sony VGP-BMS30 Bluetooth mouse and it pairs within a couple of seconds from any condition. Tracking is very good on both - and I cannot comment on battery life for the Apple yet. I installed the CD and have all software updates installed.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Hey!! I am still not convinced on buying it… need a better review I suppose… well what is the price for it… here they say its for $49… pretty expensive…
http://www.dealplumber.com/deal/dealtails?dealid=2195 - bmc2010, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0That wasn't a review which convinced me on whether or not as a consumer I should purchase the product.
- iDrinkKoolAid, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I own the wired Mighty Mouse and the one-button Apple Bluetooth mouse and cannot wait to sell both items on ebay to have the best of both worlds. I absolutely enjoy the vertical/horizontal action of the scroll ball. The original Apple Bluetooth mouse is highly reliable and doesn't lose connection like my brother's Kensington Bluetooth mouse does. To those who don't find the Mighty Mouse comfortable, try a mouse pad with a thick silicon palm/wrist rest. This may help. All of you who find a $69 mouse a ripoff, that is your right to say so. No one is forcing you to buy and use one. Some of us like to use nice looking things and are willing to pay for it.

another review
via comment left on the linked site - G5geek, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0actually it does work with boot camp/windows/parralells all you have to do is when you turn it on hold the right button. when a microsoft BT mouse it sends a signal telling it to connect by holding the right button it sort of duplicates this effect.
Hope that helps, although I am shure you have allready found the solution by now... - rjbme, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0So, if it runs on one battery AND two, why even bother using two? Why not just make it a one battery mouse?
- shirprice, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0It's a mouse, who cares what it looks like. Some things should be function before form. The Logitech and Microsoft mice both seem to follow that philosophy. I have an MX510 and like the fact that it feels natural in my hand, and that it has forward and back browse buttons. I wouldn't be without a scroll wheel anymore, and I don't see the advantage in a cordless mouse. (The cord helps keep my kids from running off with it.) I don't understand the people that get hung up on what Apple products look like, if I am buying a washing machine, I want to know which one performs the best, not which one wins a design award.
- GeogJIM, on 10/12/2007, -9/+7Oh yeah I love the way the Microsoft mouse I use flies that pointer to the lower left of the screen about once every 5 min, setting off my exposé. Why does everything coming from or in some way related to Windows make my work just that much harder. I have a wired version of the MM, that it doesn't do the aforementioned, gives the extra dimension of the squeeze buttons. Mostly, I forget I'm using it which is exacty where I want technology, forgotten but preforming.
- ummagummas08, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2To anyone thinking about purchasing a mighty mouse, who has a mac mini,
They ***** suck. They make this weird clicking noise even after you've installed the software and everything, or at least in my experience. - GameGod, on 10/12/2007, -5/+3Maybe my hand's just too big or molded into my Logitech MX700, but the Mighty Mouse that came with my iMac at work has to be the LEAST comfortable mouse I've ever used. I never knew there were that many different types of pain you can experience in your hand.
(I ended up just using a different mouse...)
Has anyone else found that the Mighty Mouse is horribly inergonomic? (unergonomic? lol)
The bluetooth version doesn't look any better... - harpdog, on 10/12/2007, -18/+15Have you actually used this mouse. I got one yesterday and it is better than any of the logitech mice I have ever used. It is more responsive and works on just about any surface i use it on. My wireless logitch mouse can't do that.
- benthere, on 10/12/2007, -5/+2@harpdog: I'm using my Logitech mouse on my couch to read this story right now. Works fine. I mostly only use it on my desk surface when I'm gaming or typing a lot.
