- mortigon, on 10/10/2007, -24/+56Ooooo its all aluminumy
I still won't buy one (I'm going for most digg downs here) - rheaume, on 10/10/2007, -5/+31Digg down denied
- sarusa, on 10/10/2007, -7/+25I'm sorry, that glossy screen is in no way a step forward in ergonomics. It's too bad, too, because the other changes are very nice, but the glare is just awful. They couldn't have offered a matte option?
- FoxOrian, on 10/10/2007, -0/+16Its actually a glass border. [the whole surface is glass, really.]
The border conceals the magnets which hold the glass pane to the iMac.
Get a suction cup, you can remove the glass and service the iMac. Screws which hold the aluminum faceplate are also below the black border. - Koski, on 10/10/2007, -6/+20Isn't at least the ATi HD 2600 Pro better than the X1600 in the previous iMacs?
Either way, I'm so buying one when it gets bundled with Leopard. Boomshakalaka! - FoxOrian, on 10/10/2007, -4/+16I have the new 24" iMac. I'm a graphic designer and it isn't too bad. I had to use a professional pantone screen calibrator on the screen which makes it look perfect, but truth be told I'm impressed by the GPU inside it. I had a 2.16GHz 20" iMac before this new one, and the Radeon X1600 was pretty dull, it could run Half-Life 2 and that was about it. These new GPU's though, the HD2600XT, I think are pretty impressive for an all-in-one system. I can play Oblivion at 1680x1050 with the graphics set to "xbox 360 level" and get very smooth frame rates. My old iMac, which wasn't even really that old considering, couldn't even really open oblivion -- never mind play it.
I enjoy the black border around the screen, I find it makes the screen pop forward while the computer recedes, creating less of a distraction than the old thick jewel-like white cases did. The keyboard didn't take me any time at all to pick up on, probably due to the fact I used to own a MacBook for a whole year before upgrading to a MacBook Pro. But I enjoy the tactile responsiveness of the new keyboards -- I find I make less typos on average on that keyboard than before on the old apple keyboards. - rauz, on 10/10/2007, -2/+14Too confusing for you? 3.5 is half way between 3 and 4.
- InitialDMP5, on 10/10/2007, -1/+11he is referring to the OS X ablilty to run windows and run windows games using Direct X 10. He is saying that the Graphics card that comes with the iMac is at such a level that trying to run hardcore games like Crysis will not yield great results.
- quomen, on 10/10/2007, -6/+16That's for ubuntu fool.
- frankszabo, on 11/13/2007, -16/+26relax people - it's just a computer. get a life...
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+10black is less distracting to the eye. look at high end tv sets: all black.
- davidrools, on 10/10/2007, -5/+13I never understood putting the computer in the monitor. Most monitors are still good to use after you want to replace the computer. Plus you don't have as much choice when it comes to screen size and style, height adjustability, etc. Then you've got to use laptop components (memory, mobile CPU) to fit it in there (fortunately they didn't shrink the HDD down to mobile size). And ooh you can run dual displays just like a PC but, uhoh, they won't be at the same level unless you sit your second beauitful monitor on top of a stack of books or something. Lovely desktop.
All gripes aside, it is a pretty machine and perfectly suited to your basic desktop apps, but damn you pay a lot to do just that. - everfresh59, on 10/10/2007, -2/+10Wow... did you guys ever try to understand that Jobs isn't building his machines for gaming (yet). He's solely aiming his product at the new users who are considering the switch to OSX. I really don't think he cares about gamers....besides, do you really think he would have been able to stick a monster GPU into that thin enclosure.
A perfect example would be the MBP. If you have one, and Bootcamp Windows, have you guys noticed that the underclocking of the GPU isn't active in Windows. You can even feel the ridiculous amount of heat coming from the card when you do. Also, the screen flickers when the power supply isn't connected. - Ireland, on 10/10/2007, -1/+9I have a life, but when half of it spent on a computer, I don't want any oul' computer. I want quick, enjoyable, reliable system - which the iMac most certainly is. And it manages to look good too all the while.
- PeeCee, on 10/10/2007, -1/+8Single page, with pics:
http://www.appleinsider.com/print.php?id=3070 - infobhan, on 10/10/2007, -2/+8When you're using the computer, you can't see the glare (typing now on a glossy screen with plenty of lights overhead).
- infobhan, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6I would have thought the same thing. The glare generally looks bad in the store. That said, I've had a gloss plasma display for nearly a year and a glossy MacBook for longer than that, and have never noticed the glare while using either.
- nogami, on 10/10/2007, -4/+10I don't much care for the black plastic border around the screen - I'm curious why they went that route instead of just going solid metal all the way around (which would've been much nicer, imho).
- Alegoo92, on 10/10/2007, -6/+11Im surprised they don't have the built in Apple remote magnet holder
- greatblackowl, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5Large screen, large box?
- rssej, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5Main reason is to reduce clutter. I bought one for the home so that do have a nuch of wires in the back and its mch easier to hook stuff to the back of imac than a tower (which is typically under the desk.) It makes it a lot easier on my family. As for me, im hooked on my MBP, its has enough power to render in FCP and AE decently--granted it is no mac pro, but its a lot better than your average desktop on the market.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -5/+10*****. Glossy screens are the dumbest fad to hit computing since "pen computing". Actually, they may be worse.
When I'm using a computer, I want to see what's on the goddamned screen, not what's behind me. - gmprunner, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5I much prefer glossy as well. Matte screens, to me, now appear noticeably dull and flat. I've never had glare issues.
- monospaced, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5It comes with a digital audio out.
- johnnybluejeans, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6You want a whole number for this review? 3.5 / 5 = 7/10. Do you feel better now?
- kolywater, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5enough already. just stop.
- 35263526, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4How, exactly, would they do surround sound while keeping with their "all in one" design philosophy? 7.1 isn't just sticking seven speakers and a subwoofer anywhere; you need to place them at specific locations around the user for them to be worth using.
- macbookpromat, on 10/10/2007, -4/+8I'm honestly sick of Apple's tendency to under-power their computers in the GPU department. As we speak, the only computer they make that has an adequate GPU is the MacBook Pro. They really need to consider putting the 8800 GTX in the Mac Pro and putting a low end GPU in the MacBook and Mac Mini.
- musicbear, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5"...But while it represents two steps forward in terms of ergonomics and performance, pro users may find the iMac taking one step backward..."
The iMac is for home users. That big horking expensive Mac Pro tower that you hook a 30" Cinema Display to is for pro users. So yes. A pro user buying the iMac for pro work to replace their Mac Pro tower would be a step backward - either that or they're just a big ***** idiot. - Commodus, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5That's not entirely true. Would it be fair to ask everyone who works with images for a living to spend a minimum $2200 (before the display!) just to get serious work done? The iMac is a better value, and the first 24-inch was actually viable for some as a straightforward artist's PC.
- askegg, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5I was hoping they would add an e-sata connection for my external drives. Oh well, maybe next time?
- tdowling, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4with Boot Camp, you boot directly into Windows...no virtualization required.
- bailuff, on 10/10/2007, -3/+6You mean predecessor?
- Boondoggle, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3depends on your definition of "legit". Maybe yours isn't a universal standard, eh?
- zdiggler, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4Why don't you go buy a new monitor for it!
- NeoRicen, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3I've done benchmarks between this and the previous iMacs, in BootCamp it completley smokes the older ones in BF2 and CS:Source.
- DaffyDuck, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4The leaked photos were fakes didn't look like the real design. The keyboard was leaked, however, and Steve acknowledged it in his keynote.
- geoffstgermaine, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Ebay?
- doctorcaligari, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3The ATi HD2600 Pro is roughly equivalent to the nVidia 7600GT that was found in the old high end iMac 24". The x1600 and 7300 GT in the old iMacs are a couple of notches below the Radeon HD2400XT in the new low end iMac. The new $1199 iMac is an awesome deal compared to the old 20".

- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -2/+4Funny how even the legit criticisms are dugg down here.
- neuropsychguy, on 10/10/2007, -4/+6Some of us prefer the glossy screens. I don't mind matte but glossy is much better IMO.
- martin308, on 10/30/2007, -0/+2you mean 8600?
- DaffyDuck, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3That doesn't make sense.
- MacParrot, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Check the refurb section at the online Apple Store. They had some 24-inch models last gen for under $1500 a few days ago
http://store.apple.com/1-800-MY-APPLE/WebObjects/AppleStore - 35263526, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Or maybe he just thinks, like I do, that glossy screens tend to have nicer colour.
If there weren't advantages to glossy screens do you really think manufacturers like Apple would offer them? - inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2I don't get it... usually I just leave the cum in the sock.
- whiteyMcBrown, on 10/10/2007, -2/+4I totally understand why some people wouldn't want a glossy screen, but I have to say, as a designer, that I prefer the glossy screen (and went for it on my Macbook Pro)... it's true that it can reflect glare in non-optimal conditions, but if you're a designer, you should get something that will look the best when you CAN control conditions (which is most of the time, especially for a desktop). The colours are better than a matte screen. The contrast is better than a matte screen.
- hunchback, on 10/10/2007, -2/+4No but you can suck a few *****, that'll easily pay for a new Mac, bitch.
- octophobic, on 10/10/2007, -2/+4Why black? Why not an array of colors? Everything is so black and white with apple. :P
