- HillerMylife, on 11/09/2008, -12/+142Or... you know... use a mouse? What sort of professional uses Photoshop exclusively with a trackpad?
- dig1x, on 11/09/2008, -40/+142Buried because it is worthless fanboy blathering.
Jesus, "I’m still worried. Because it makes photos look so darn good, I only want people to see my photos on a glossy MacBook Pro glass screen" ***** off buddy. - liuping, on 11/08/2008, -51/+148He's frustrated because he rests he thumb on the track pad, and that is sometime interpreted as a gesture? Uh, move you're thumb and the problem is solved. is that really all that hard to do?
- riverrunner, on 11/09/2008, -21/+102or just buy a 2 button, scroll wheel, wireless logitec mouse. problem solved.
- sonofabeast, on 11/09/2008, -19/+84nauseating article
- skeletorcares, on 11/09/2008, -6/+51wait wait wait... 2 buttons?
- FatLoser, on 11/09/2008, -21/+66shut up. if the solution to every problem is for the user to alter their behavior in a way that is not ideal, then it is a computer problem and not a PEBKAC.
- jermm, on 11/09/2008, -7/+40I really like the big-ass trackpad.
- tuckerleary, on 11/09/2008, -8/+37I want to enforce my personally stellar opinion of myself with a grammatically atrocious snide comment on digg. i'm a rebel and you're all conformist yuppies, but don't you dare stereotype me in any way because I'm clearly smarter than you. I'm going to go back to buying all of my witty shirts on jinx now, and doing all of the other important things I do in my day...
- gavintlgold, on 11/09/2008, -1/+27What if I accidentally click the right mouse button!!?!?
- ScottMcIntyre, on 11/08/2008, -0/+20It's you- in a laid back pose! ;-)
- TheFinaleofSeem, on 11/09/2008, -1/+17When color accuracy is important, you want the screen to reflect what you get on paper as best you can. Photos looking "too good" can be a problem in that case. Don't call him a moron because you're clueless.
- SpeedSteamBoat, on 11/09/2008, -3/+18Right, but the product you bought (especially something as pricey as a MacBook Pro) should work as designed. You shouldn't have to buy a peripheral to work around something like this because it should "Just work." You know?
- jasmus, on 11/09/2008, -8/+23Speak for yourself. I can get a lot more done, quicker in OS X than I could in Windows. I don't pretend that everyone can though. If I need windows, it's one mouse move and click away (parallels). Because I have to support Mac and Windows systems, this is the ideal tool for me.
I haven't tried the new Macbooks, but I understand the trackpad is bigger. The trackpad on my Macbook is larger than my old laptop which took some getting use to, but because I'm nearly always plugged in, I use a mouse. The odd occasion I do use the trackpad, I am thankful for it's generous size. - inactive, on 11/09/2008, -25/+39I want a Mac Book Pro to complement my BMW 3 series, my iPhone, a Banana Repubic scarf, my Cashmere sweater, and my faux-Italian Frappuccino that I order from my favorite hang out spot, Starbucks while listening to Cold Play.
- SpeedSteamBoat, on 11/09/2008, -2/+16Some people like to click with their thumb and rest it on surface they use to click.
- ultrafez, on 11/09/2008, -2/+14You shouldn't have to move your thumb - that is the problem. Why should you convert to having to use a mouse?
- threat42, on 11/09/2008, -2/+14*move YOUR thumb
...and the grammar is solved. - brightshadow525, on 11/09/2008, -5/+16It's "just you."
- celotil, on 11/09/2008, -0/+10Exactly, he's a user of the machine, and going to judge it based on how it works for him as a tool, not just on its technical specifications and benchmarks.
When I'm looking to buy a new computer, or piece one together from parts, first I look at the technical specifications and make sure everything is technically compatible, then I look up reviews from people who have actually used the computer, or parts, to do a job with.
Sure, it may display a game at 120 fps, but what problems have people had getting that game to run in the first place - video card driver issues, screen refresh showing up glaringly during play. What about with word processing or graphic work with Photoshop? Is there issues with the display of text or graphics, like anti-aliasing problems or glaring colours? Should I need to calibrate the screen before proper use?
Tech specs are fine, but when you can't simply go to a shop and try something out, other people's experiences are the next best thing, and the more the better. - Urkel, on 11/09/2008, -1/+11Yes, let's blame the end-user for the companies questionable decisions.
Apple drops firewire after a decade of pushing it on us = Spend $700 more for the pro OR sell your old FW stuff and settle for USB only.
Apple forces a glassy ultra reflective screen = Move your desk, change your lighting, and by all means, avoid the sun!
Apple changes the trackpad they trained us to use = Even though "It Just Worked" and change was unnecessary, we are supposed to retrain our brain to avoid overly touching a touchpad.
Seriously, enough with expecting the end user is supposed to cater to the machine. That is exactly how the Terminators took over. - inactive, on 11/09/2008, -1/+11Posting from a new MacBook Pro and I could not be happier. I love the trackpad. I love no button. I love the gestures and right-click hot corner. I have used CS3 a number of times and it works as it should. The screen just looks great. I didn't think I would like glossy but it looks very good.
This was an upgrade from my ancient PowerBook G4 and I can't think of one thing that has frustrated me with the new MBP. - morninglorii, on 11/09/2008, -3/+12I strongly disagree. One of the main reasons I love my Mac is because it allows me to work in a Unix environment without sacrificing the prospect of being able to use mainstream software packages (Adobe, Office, etc.).
- Dawggoneit, on 11/09/2008, -6/+15Pro Tip: Rest your thumb onto the frame, and off the track pad.
- Soave, on 11/09/2008, -3/+12Who the hell dodges and burns with a trackpad?
- inactive, on 11/09/2008, -1/+9Sounds good me too
- Bauer22, on 11/09/2008, -4/+12Great! After reading the other 50 MacBook reviews that got on FP I can have one more opinion!
- thesledman, on 11/09/2008, -3/+11Spoke like someone who has never used a mac. I suggest you try using one first, and I don't mean just pressing a few buttons while in a Apple store. Ask a friend who has a mac to show you the ropes, explain how it helps them get things done quicker and with less hassle. Just because it gets a lot of press and has fanboys doesn't make it a bad platform. Just because it looks good doesn't mean it wont function well. Every design that strays from the norm takes a little getting used to.
- pyrates, on 11/09/2008, -2/+9If you need to do quick editing while on the go or you just want some thing that is portable to do your work in photoshop, that is why someone gets the macbook pro right? And I do know people who use the touchpad exclusively on their laptop instead of a mouse.
- parasight, on 11/09/2008, -1/+8I know it sounds crazy, and I hadn't anticipated this either, but I find myself using the MBP's trackpad a lot more than the mouse, and I'm a "professional" graphic designer using the Adobe suite. Even when I force myself to use the mouse, I tend to switch back to the trackpad unconsciously because something about it is much faster and more intuitive. I can't wait to give CS4 a spin with all that new multi-touch support.
- EmitStop, on 11/09/2008, -0/+7I've always sorta imagined you as being a talking MacBook.
- inactive, on 11/09/2008, -6/+12Honestly...who does photoshop work with a trackpad?
- inactive, on 11/09/2008, -1/+7....while pretending to write my screenplay, but playing sudoku instead.
- MavRevMatt, on 11/09/2008, -1/+7Is that the Apple fanboy response to everything now? This one size fits all ***** about how everything they do is perfect and if you don't like it you should change what you're doing?
- Raz4Life, on 11/09/2008, -1/+7Don't click with your thumb! The point is to click by pressing with the finger you're using to move the cursor. That would solve his biggest problem.
- mmembrino, on 11/09/2008, -0/+6No it isn't. I switch between a mouse for things like Halo and trackpad (like right now) all the time with no problem.
- crazzy88ss, on 11/09/2008, -14/+19what a lame review. S. Kelby's a photographer, not a computer reviewer :/
- feanix, on 11/09/2008, -1/+6Digg mates!?! Are we building a nest or something?
- Mithivh, on 11/09/2008, -2/+7Well played. You both get my digg.
- kevlar21, on 11/09/2008, -0/+5Yea, wasn't no buttons good enough?
- whiteyMcBrown, on 11/09/2008, -2/+7First of all, Apple should absolutely allow you to turn off all the gesture stuff on the new laptops. It would be even better if you could do this on an application-by-application basis. That said, I wouldn't recommend that anyone paints using a trackpad. That's never been fun. Once you get used to using a Wacom, mice seem terribly clunky, never mind track pads.
CS4 is amazing looking, but I think I'm going to wait for 64-bit support in CS5 for Mac. It's going to hurt to wait another 18 months, but by then I should have a Mac Pro with a Nehlem Processor, lots of RAM, and Snow Leopard. It's about time Adobe gave us mac users the unified window view. Working Photoshop on the Mac was always painful with a mess of windows everywhere. I know I can arrange palettes, but I really don't need to see bits of my desktop through them. - enzomedici, on 11/09/2008, -6/+11
Take your ***** windows laptop to complement your Subaru, your Android phone, a Urban Outfitters scarf, your tree hugger sweater, and your faux-Starbucks coffee that you get from some mom & pop shop while listening to some "underground" music. Don't spill your coffee on your Crocs you douche bag. lol. - bradg2, on 11/09/2008, -2/+7Hint: Apple doesn't make their screens.
- vashmyvindows, on 11/09/2008, -0/+5A unified window view isn't suited well for Mac OS. Exposé would reveal only Photoshop and not each individual image you're working on, and honestly is there anything more efficient than exposé?
If you're really bent on hiding your desktop, why not use full screen mode? CS4 has the tab bar which emulates the window-within-a-window layout of Windows Photoshop anyway. I know it's not the same, but it provides nice isolation when you need to be absolutely focused. - inactive, on 11/09/2008, -0/+4Hey now! Let's not turn this thread into a PEBKACian bashing thread. Some of my best friends are PEBKACs. I even voted PEBKAC in my local election.
- durruticolumn, on 09/18/2009, -5/+9
Are you kidding? I'm a professional software developer, and my Mac is irreplaceable. - molotovcat, on 11/09/2008, -2/+6That would mean computers would need to be designed to fit the needs of everyone. That's impossible.
- inactive, on 11/09/2008, -2/+6...funny, because jinx sell Digg shirts.
- BenBenMan, on 11/09/2008, -2/+6You forgot "while writing my screenplay"
- yeahright, on 11/09/2008, -1/+5***** you, I drive an Audi.
