- abw1987, on 09/16/2008, -6/+41"The Zune presented a 'squircle' touch controller with no labels and two external physical buttons above it, one for play and pause and the other marked with a back arrow. When held sideways (a mode arbitrarily determined by the video being played), the touch controller reconfigured how it worked, but the physical buttons didn't (and couldn't obviously). This changed the layout and the relationships between the buttons, making them frustratingly unintuitive for everyone but the most determined users, and doing absolutely nothing to boost Microsoft's sales. "
Wow, excuse Microsoft for not conforming to Apple's apparently industry standard control interface. It's called "soft keys", Apple, and Microsoft decided that these made more sense on a device that changes orientation than fixed buttons. In fact I'd call Microsoft the innovator on this one, and you, AppleInsider, just a pompous reviewer that thinks for some reason the iPod's success have translated into industry rules. - alibanana, on 09/16/2008, -5/+31Buried for fanboyism. I appreciate that the Zune is the competitor but there's no need to slate it throughout the entire review. Objectivity is the key.
- smoger, on 09/16/2008, -2/+23kind of funny how they rag on the zune because it's play button doesn't "change orientation" when held sideways. is it really THAT confusing that it's still the play button? are we to believe that people are THAT stupid?
do they ever list their source for zune sales figures? i'm looking for that but can't find anything in the article. they seem to be making a lot of assumptions, but i guess that's expected considering the site. - aspec, on 09/16/2008, -0/+14If you release a product, it takes a year to get to the anniversary, so the second nano would have been released on the first anniversary.
- jer21, on 09/16/2008, -0/+13this is why it's generally not a good idea to get reviews from sites named appleinsider or whatever the zune equivalent is...find a neutral site and read what they have to say.
- ModemGhost, on 09/16/2008, -1/+13I was thinking the same thing. I'm a huge Apple fanboy, but if I wrote something as a "review" I would try to make it a bit more balanced. The whole tone of this article was that the thing is perfect, except for when it's not perfect, and the only time it's not perfect is when the user is being an idiot.
- scabbers, on 09/16/2008, -0/+12Are apple fanboys calling themselves an ethnic group now?
- Auryn, on 09/16/2008, -0/+11I quote Maddox.
" Part of the Mac community? It's a computer, not a social movement, *****!`' - Gumby_Mac, on 09/16/2008, -0/+9I don't get the hoopla over the 4th gen nano. Sure it's got an accelerometer, but doesn't it have the same size screen as the 3rd gen nano, just turned sideways? If you were going to make it so much taller, why not give it a larger screen with a widescreen aspect ratio?
- furiouslettuce, on 09/16/2008, -1/+10This 'review' reads like an advert. Any of the criticisms which people might voice have been headed off at the pass, as it were. For instance, the fact that it will ask you whenever a new ipod is synced whether you would like to view new games for it is an annoyance, and they just dismiss it by crying "Oh, the humanity!". Fair enough if Apple wants to offer this feature, but give people the choice, don't just shove it all in their faces.
- sjps220, on 09/16/2008, -0/+8Maybe I just missed it, but I couldn't find anything in this review about the sound quality. Seems odd for an audio device.
- thefirelane, on 09/16/2008, -2/+9you might be surprised to learn: there are a whole range of other products made by thousands of other companies which might not be tailored specifically to you.
You also don't need to buy a new car each year, yet they release them. - FishRHuman2, on 09/16/2008, -0/+7Yeah, this is where it lost me--I've had both iPod and Zune, and I *love* the squircle. People take offense at anything done differently than how Apple does it.
- uskomaton, on 09/16/2008, -2/+9Wow, a site called AppleInsider gave an Apple product 4.5/5. I'm in shock.
(For the record I own a 80gb Classic) - BlaqReaper, on 09/16/2008, -0/+6Why does the description say twice the RAM when the article says twice the storage space? Did appleinsider realize it's mistake and change it at the last minute?
- inactive, on 09/16/2008, -1/+7Yes, because nothing says you made it like.... listening to an iPod on the bus.
- Macskeeball, on 09/16/2008, -0/+6I've often seen similar reactions the other way around when it's Mac OS X and Windows being compared. I've seen people use the "used to it" argument to complain about UI differences in Mac OS, even when they provide a better interface from a logical usability perspective. For example, a single menubar saves screen real estate and provides a fixed target at the edge of the screen, but I've still seen people complain simply because it's different than the way its done in WIndows.
- ModernDayDarwin, on 09/16/2008, -1/+7"are we to believe that people are THAT stupid?"
Take a look around, most people are that stupid. - quarkie, on 09/16/2008, -0/+6people are going to digg you down after reading the response, but I had to pause to think about it also... it does sound weird the first time to read it.
- inactive, on 09/16/2008, -6/+12Lickable gadgets, reminds me of the first wonderful iMacs. Yum.
- chkdg8, on 09/16/2008, -5/+11Wow, that's one massive review. Now I want one.
- ModemGhost, on 09/16/2008, -1/+6Do I need my music player upgraded every 4 months? No. Am I happy that Apple continues to update the iPod line, so now that I'm about to replace my 6 year old 2nd gen iPod, I get the latest and greatest? Yes.
- Karmavs, on 09/16/2008, -1/+6Correction: Gimmicky a-la shake to shuffle.
- deenoop, on 09/16/2008, -0/+4"In fact, the only problem we could imagine with the new shape is its two rounded"
massive but not proofread. - StevieG, on 09/16/2008, -0/+4***** you
- statc, on 09/16/2008, -3/+7After I read that review, I went straight to the zune site to see if 3.0 will run on my mac. Unfortunatly, it doesn't unless I use bootcamp. I was planning to get a nano but with all the fanboyism in that article, maybe I'll just get creative or something.
- FishRHuman2, on 09/16/2008, -0/+4This opens the door to great "racist" jokes.
- chrispaul50, on 09/16/2008, -0/+4I see a trend...smaller and more memory each time. Wow, who would've thunk it? And yet it's hailed each time as the second coming.
- jackcrack7, on 09/16/2008, -1/+4Most of my family has now switched to the Zune from having previous iPods. Not one of them have regretted it. It's funny that lots of articles rip on the Zune without even actually using it when everyone I know who has a Zune is very happy with the purchase.
- inactive, on 09/16/2008, -1/+4Look... A lot of small investors bought into Apple when it was up to 200, and the short trader sharks have taken all their money. They have to get this stock pumped back up, or they are gonna have a bad christmas. Never mind that they still have a peggy of 26 and right now the industry standard for this climate is 15. This is Apple, facts don't matter.
- SuperVepr308, on 09/16/2008, -3/+6After several iPods I switch to a 8GB Zune a couple of months back. No regrets.
- splosion, on 09/16/2008, -0/+3From a design standpoint, the new nano is not a step forward. They took a gen 2 nano and added the slimming trick from the air (that is, fat in the middle and tapering off towards the edges.) Apple products have been about simplicity and geometric precision ever since the first ipod. This nano breaks that design direction, and to me looks unsophisticated.
- hughesj919, on 09/16/2008, -0/+3Was definitely about to correct you until I read the last sentence. Jokes on me I guess...
- cave, on 09/16/2008, -0/+3Cue video of douchebag cutting cake with a Nano.
- SniperGX1, on 09/16/2008, -0/+3What's "radio"?
- jer21, on 09/16/2008, -0/+3Lifestyle changing? Really?
- TVarmy, on 09/16/2008, -0/+3Whatever happened to translucent plastic? It'd be cool to see how Apple of 1999 would design Apple of 2009's products. I'd do it myself if I knew how to use photoshop.
- WoollyMittens, on 09/16/2008, -1/+4They're not forcing you to buy it at gunpoint. If you need one, you buy a new one. If your old one works, then keep it.
Geez, talk about looking for an excuse to be an ***** about something. - MacParrot, on 09/16/2008, -0/+2Apple has 120gb iPods. Microsoft has 80gb (maybe bigger now) Zunes. Archos has large capacity players. Flash memory isn't cheap enough to make a 64gb or above player that isn't going to price itself out of the market. Find a hard drive based unit that meets your needs
- toxicityj, on 09/16/2008, -1/+3for being about the ipod, they sure do go on and on about the Zune a lot.
- BrendanSheehan, on 09/16/2008, -0/+2Prince McClean, a.k.a. "Daniel Eran" gives Mac users a bad name when his does this. He's a blind fanboy.
I love Apple products, but Apple is certainly not perfect, by any means. Apple need to learn to be less arrogant and more open. - MacParrot, on 09/16/2008, -0/+2Having gone through the review, I see the Zune is mentioned once. How is that slating it throughout the review?
- MacParrot, on 09/16/2008, -0/+2As long as you're willing to pay $15 a month (and don't mind that all those songs will disappear if you don't) have at it. Not everyone's needs are going to be the same as yours.
Don't want a bluetooth or WiFi as I just mostly use it in my car. Don't want FM either because I wanted to get away from annoying DJs and stations that all sound the same in each market.
But if those are features you want then that's what you should get instead of an iPod. - Elranzer, on 09/17/2008, -0/+2It turns you gay (and if you're in college, you become an Art History major.)
- FishRHuman2, on 09/16/2008, -0/+2When you use your iPod all the freaking time, your thumb starts to cramp.
And it's already being tossed...see iPhone and iPod touch. - MrChunks, on 09/16/2008, -0/+2Please, DON'T say things like that. As an Apple product owner and user, it's comments like that which make the rest of us look like complete wankers.
To everyone else: I don't know this guy. He has nothing to do with me. - MacParrot, on 09/16/2008, -0/+2The only way it's inferior is in sales. I've played around with a few (wouldn't buy one since MS never made Zune software for the Mac) and it seemed OK to me. The menu structure while different wasn't all the hard to figure out. Certainly no harder than using an iPod.
People need to learn to relax and let others use the devices or software that they prefer. - StevieG, on 09/16/2008, -1/+2So you would not by a product you want because of an article written on AppleInsider???
That makes sense to me. - BrendanSheehan, on 09/16/2008, -0/+1I see your point, as do MacParrots everywhere.
The point is obvious. McClean think Apple is "perfect". They're not. That's why his reviews are slanted that way. Whereas someone like Gruber; as opinionated as he is, has his share of Apple criticism too. McClean doesn't. He lives in an Apple-bubble. - jackcrack7, on 09/16/2008, -0/+1It's actually mentioned twice. They first refer to it as the iPods inferior competitor and then in the next paragraph they thrash the controls on it. The biggest problem is that the reviewer seems uninformed.
