- ajb2015, on 05/19/2009, -0/+53i use this all the time. it's great, but i'm a little surprised that this is news to so many people.
- ltethe, on 05/19/2009, -1/+27Seriously? Nobody knows about this? Quicklook is the best porn viewer bar none. Especially cause it instantly opens AND closes, so nobody at the office ever knows.
- airwalke, on 05/19/2009, -3/+24Quick Look is incredible. I'm amazed that it never got any publicity from Apple when Leopard was released.
- slicecom, on 05/19/2009, -1/+21I had to use a mac with 10.4 a few weeks ago and found myself constantly hitting the space bar for quick look, and nothing happening! You don't realize how much you love it till its gone. It's easily my favorite feature added in 10.5.
- seltaeb4, on 05/19/2009, -8/+23Yet another reason to have a Mac.
- extratightpants, on 05/19/2009, -2/+15yeah this totally went under the radar. As a graphic designer using all type of formats (audio, video, still images, office apps), its so easy to find what im looking for. Plus it uses the big fat spacebar to open them.
- zoodoo12, on 05/19/2009, -2/+12very useful when I have many word documents and can't remember which one to open
- BossKey, on 05/19/2009, -0/+10It's part of the reason Macs are under-appreciated. When Windows users come over and try to make it work like Windows, they miss all of the cool features that they don't even know they should look for because they aren't in Windows.
It goes the other way too, though. I sometimes have to educate Mac users that Windows has a few cool features that the Mac still needs. - Urkel, on 05/19/2009, -2/+11Just like so many other great OS X features, the fans/ads were too obsessed with Windows bashing to actually show off what makes OS X so cool.
It's a shame Apple doesn't use commercials to actually advertise their own OS rather than slamming a competing one. It would be much more effective and would make us look less *****. - crazzy88ss, on 05/19/2009, -0/+8You should see the faces of my class mates when I show them Expose. Keep in mind they've been using the classroom's macs for 2+ semesters now...
- mrBitch, on 05/19/2009, -2/+8Yeah, I thought it was a stupid feature, until I started using it.
Being able to quickly open and close pdf, jpg, doc, avi, mp4, etc. without having to open the associated applications really does change this from being "insanely stupid *****" to being "insanely useful". - Braxo, on 05/19/2009, -4/+9I think it is an invaluable tool, I can't imagine what it would be like if it were taken away.
- Kstha1, on 05/19/2009, -2/+7wow you can ADD plugins for quicklook?!
This great feature got 10x better.. - MacBandit, on 05/19/2009, -0/+5It did it was just that the press didn't rave about it so no one picked up on it except the serious users.
- inactive, on 05/19/2009, -0/+5I use QuickLook everyday on a regular basis. Being able to scroll through Word docs and PowerPoint right from an email without ever opening up those crappy programs makes me giddy.
- inactive, on 05/19/2009, -2/+6Wow. I must be too nerdy. I was sitting there reading the article going; yea QuickLook's cool I guess, so what. But reading these comments, I guess there's people who don't know every detail about their OS.... the mind boggles. Digg up.
- MacBandit, on 05/19/2009, -0/+4That's a launcher which is not even close to what this is.
- Laughto, on 05/19/2009, -0/+4After reading this I've suddenly realised how often I use the feature. It's like second nature in the OS environment now.
But no, I am a mac user so I must be lying to myself. - Chirp08, on 05/19/2009, -0/+4Not to mention the slideshow capabilities for a folder full of porn.
- MacBandit, on 05/19/2009, -0/+3Actually it's pretty much the same thing since you're opening an app to see the file thus defeating the term "preview".
This allows instant previews of nearly all common files without opening any applications. - Nolimit, on 05/19/2009, -0/+3Well, that's exactly why quicklook is far superior to its windows counterpart. Quick look is so great because it can INSTANTLY (not right click - open with windows picture and fax viewer) open pictures, videos, word, excel, you name it.
You pointed out exactly why WP&FV (elegant abbreviation) fails while trying to do the exact opposite. Nicely done. - surferjoemaui, on 05/19/2009, -1/+4Love the spacebar (I never miss.)
- MacBandit, on 05/19/2009, -0/+2I've been using it since Leopard came out as well but did you know it was extensible?
- MacBandit, on 05/19/2009, -0/+2Well testing using the largest tif file I have a 204.8MB astronomy photo on a 2GHz Core2Duo MacBook it takes quicklook 9secs and GraphicConverter 31secs to load.
I think Quicklook works pretty well even with large files. - thebuggalo, on 05/19/2009, -0/+2It is meant as a preview, not a light-weight do-all app.
- MacBandit, on 05/20/2009, -0/+2It's only hilarious that you have no clue what you are talking about.
- Chirp08, on 05/19/2009, -0/+2Did you ever think to hit the standard volume key on your keyboard?
- Dalhectar, on 05/19/2009, -0/+2What's wrong with Spotlight? Type in some keywords and the from there that should take you straight to the document you want, no need to guess with quick look.
- wwwluckyro, on 05/20/2009, -0/+2dude...
- Iggins, on 05/19/2009, -1/+3I'll have some of what your smoking....
- yan89, on 05/19/2009, -2/+3Yeah...and you don't have any knowledge since forever. Nothing particularly new.
- TheBlueVulcan, on 05/19/2009, -5/+6Wow, I've owned my Macbook for just under a year and never knew about this! Very handy!
- eadnams, on 05/19/2009, -1/+2I wish!
- inactive, on 05/19/2009, -0/+1That's a launcher. Not the same thing. QuickLook is built into the OS, pops up a window of the file, pic, movie with the hit of a spacebar without launching an app and then goes away with another tap.
Sorry, nice try. Next! - inactive, on 05/19/2009, -0/+1How can I view a .gif animation with Preview?
- roostersheep, on 05/19/2009, -0/+1Suspicious package looks great, will be installing that later.
- chrisappleton, on 05/20/2009, -0/+1Yo, I heard you like to open files. Now you can open your files before you open your files.
- Kstha1, on 05/19/2009, -0/+1..hence the name, "Quick look"
- Chirp08, on 05/19/2009, -1/+2I'd like it better if it was actually quick for big files. It takes forever to preview large tiff files, which defeats the point of just opening the file normally which actually takes less time then waiting on quick look to verify what it is.
- surferjoemaui, on 05/19/2009, -0/+1I solemnly swear never to open Adobe Reader again.
- Lemon, on 05/20/2009, -0/+1Probably the most used Leopard feature. A serious win as a default *everything* viewer but really great for me because Preview was the worst image viewer known to man.
- Kstha1, on 05/19/2009, -3/+4dont worry, im sure windows 7 will have the same feature and diff name..then it will be "insanely innovative"
I still dont get why people become fans of operating systems lol..unless your making money off of Apple or Windows, you shouldn't be crying about which is better/worse..just use it for what it is. - r00fus, on 05/21/2009, -0/+1Unfortunately, quicklook (which uses Preview to render pdfs) doesn't grok multi-part pdfs (ie, pdfs with attachments).
Guess I'm stuck with Adobe and bloat-ware hell (and the updater that launches randomly) - HappyScrappy, on 05/20/2009, -1/+1That turns down everything that is making noise. I just want to turn the mp3 down.
And that still doesn't fix that fact that it stops playing when you switch to another window. I want to hear a song, I shouldn't have to add it to my iTunes library or VLC to do it. I was able to do this just fine in 10.4. 10.5, with quicklock, broke it. - ioncelovedjane, on 05/18/2009, -4/+4This should be the standard manual included in the box.
- LemmingJesus, on 05/19/2009, -1/+1It's closer than nothing.
- pentiumii, on 05/19/2009, -1/+1WOW just WOW people didn't know this existed
ok if u didn't know about this this simple little feature in OSX (by the way i think cool i use it on my mac book )
then i shouldn't see any comments made by them who didn't know about this feature
in the tech section of dig any more clearly u don't know enough about computers to comment on them
take the time to learn the OS environment u work in that would get rid 90% of all bull ***** flame wars on on digg - dragossh, on 05/19/2009, -2/+2Attack the messenger! Windows 9x indeed had a little app that could preview files.
- SambekZX, on 05/19/2009, -2/+1The true tragedy is that this feature is so underutilized because Macs are not used as much in the industries that really need it (e.g., law firms).
