- xXM3talHeadXx, on 11/07/2009, -13/+243That would be nice. ***** AT&T
- AlterLite, on 11/07/2009, -1/+103I wonder if Verizon will nickel & dime us for every little service like they have a tendency to do...
- Stevosaurous, on 11/07/2009, -3/+94dont make it smaller!!!!!!
- n3demonic, on 11/07/2009, -2/+86that's what she said.
- sniffymcdougle, on 11/07/2009, -7/+61It would be awesome, though, because the 3G coverage on AT&T sucks.
- peestandingup, on 11/07/2009, -1/+49Companies dont give a ***** about bashing & only care about the bottom line. If they can make money off each other, they'll partner. Simple as that.
Remember the Apple & Microsoft partnership in '97?? - smacksaw, on 11/07/2009, -0/+48It's like the old mob sayings where they are about to whack a guy and say "it's business, not personal"...it really is just business.
- AvidPreatorian, on 11/07/2009, -0/+43well.... dont make the screen smaller anyway
- srodolff, on 11/07/2009, -5/+44There's map for that.......and I live in the red state....
- Mike17102, on 11/07/2009, -0/+28You mean other than the $30 fee for tethering? Or the "unlimited" 5 gig connection?
- idbjoshm, on 11/07/2009, -14/+41I'm sure everyone agrees, iPhone exclusivity to AT&T was a very bad business decision.
- FredFredrickson, on 11/07/2009, -5/+31If your dreams for life include having a phone come to your carrier, you might just be a loser.
- magamiako, on 11/07/2009, -5/+30Generally came here to post the following:
A) Smaller iphone is *****, period. I like my iphone screen and in fact sometimes wish it were larger. Nintendo-DS style type phone would kick ass.
B) AT&T's Network sucks, hands down, we're all aware of this who use iphones. I can't even use the GPS and browser while I'm getting off of work, with often times being switched to the Edge network while downtown.
C) No simultaneous voice and data usage on the Verizon network? What? I enjoy being able to hold a phone call while looking up google maps for something. So that would be a bad mistake.
For all of what AT&T's network sucks, the iphone and AT&T combination does seem to be the better one. I'm not a shill for AT&T, I hate them--I found charges on my rate plan for things I never purchased 2 months ago. A quick call did net me a quick refund, however.
Their pricing sucks, but I would imagine it's the same with most carriers. They tell you XYZ Plan costs ABC dollars, but then tag on ridiculous amounts of fees to it. Many companies do this, including Comcast--so I don't think there'd be any real advantage of switching.
Now, if Verizon offered a truly unlimited data plan of $10-$15/month ; then I think I'd make the switch.
But hey, for those that want an iphone and don't want to use AT&T, having the option is good. But it's not like you're going to be immune from the same types of problems we iphone users have currently. - mrsurfboard, on 11/07/2009, -3/+28What's with the smaller size. Small iphone screen = FAIL
- Vaiper, on 11/07/2009, -4/+27Damn republicans!
- sruffelman, on 11/07/2009, -19/+41I wouldn't get too optimistic about this one. The Droid commercials are bashing the iPhone pretty hard. I think it's safe to say that all is not well between Apple and Verizon, as much as I would love for them to get along. I wouldn't be surprised if they are working with another carrier/radio technology for the iPad/iSlate that they are working on.
- wlmafia, on 11/07/2009, -0/+18Careful. AT&T will sue you.
- FredFredrickson, on 11/07/2009, -3/+19Droid will have been out for almost a year at that point. I don't think this will make as big of a splash because of that.
- Corona85, on 11/07/2009, -8/+24HAHA Verizon gets the crappy smaller version.
- chiptricky, on 11/07/2009, -2/+17Verizon and Apple belong together. It's proprietary love in the making.
- FredFredrickson, on 11/07/2009, -8/+22You're aware that Apple is one of the worst when it comes to locking down hardware, right?
- Super6, on 11/07/2009, -4/+18Everyone that doesn't know wtf they're talking about would agree. Obviously ATT offered to pay the most so it was the best deal for apple, ATT obviously got a ***** of people to join their network for the phone (judging by the fact that they've bought exclusivity for 3 phones so far) so it must be a good business deal for them, too.
- handofahero, on 11/07/2009, -0/+13You're thinking about Android....the OS. Not Droid, the phone. And many have noticed Android as an OS in America...way to troll.
- krisrm, on 11/07/2009, -2/+14I'm assuming he was talking about Flash, a removable battery, side-loading applications, changing your wallpaper, multitasking, and not being tied to iTunes to sync your phone.
Oh, wait... - miket, on 11/07/2009, -2/+14like?
- specialK16, on 11/07/2009, -3/+13"Apple has never been known to jump into technology that is close to being outdated."
AHAHAHAHAHAHAHA - teamgwho, on 11/07/2009, -0/+10It wouldn't have had it exclusively if VZW didn't have their head up their ass. They insisted that the iPhone conform to the VZW way of doing things. Apple took a pass. Granted, no one saw the boom that the iPhone would create, so this is hindsight of course. It's helped AT&T tremendously for them to have the iPhone exclusively.
- MacHarborGuy, on 11/07/2009, -1/+11"B) AT&T's Network sucks, hands down, we're all aware of this who use iphones. I can't even use the GPS and browser while I'm getting off of work, with often times being switched to the Edge network while downtown."
Lets add a couple of million heavily used iPhones to the Verizon network and see how awesome their network reliability is at that point.
"if Verizon offered a truly unlimited data plan"
There is no such thing as a "truly unlimited data plan". Even an all-you-can-eat buffet will kick you out if "all you can eat" is more than they can afford to offer.
The local Pizza Hut here used to have an all-you-can-eat Pizza bar. It only lasted a single summer because far too many people took them up on the offer. The place was packed, and the price was very reasonable. Not high as hell, yet not cheap as dirt. They still ended it because, in the end, the cost to run and manage it was "eating" into their bottom line, and they have to put cuts somewhere. - btschul, on 11/07/2009, -3/+13If you got a job, you could afford one and stop being jealous.
- akpotato, on 11/07/2009, -1/+11Not gonna lie... If I could use this on Sprint's network with the Everything Data plan, I would sign up in a heartbeat.
- Maraud3r, on 11/07/2009, -2/+11When people find out they can have access to free and open development the iPhone will come to an end? Like Linux crushing Microsoft & Apple? Lol!
It's funny how everything is always the next iPhone killer and doesn't even leave a dent. - ralphthemagi, on 11/08/2009, -2/+11Too bad Verizon RAPES you for marginally better coverage.
I was thinking about getting a Droid until I learned that an unlimited voice/text plan with 5GB of data transfer was going to be $150/mo... and when they enable tethering it will cost another $30/mo... and you have to pay extra for Exchange support... and you're stuck with a 2-year contract an a $350 early termination fee (which they will bill to you if you go over the 5GB limit more than twice for breach of contract).
To hell with that. - Mike17102, on 11/08/2009, -2/+10So what part of Verizon do you work for TheBifman? Nothing like putting up a ***** Verizon add and claiming its a source I guess.
And coverage is far from everything. Verizon has a habit of locking down their phones and stripping out features so they can sell them back to you. - ralphthemagi, on 11/08/2009, -0/+8$150/mo for unlimited voice/text and 5GB of data
$30/mo for tethering
$15/mo for Exchange support
$2.99 for visual voicemail
AND
$350 early termination fee (if you go over your 5GB allotment twice they'll charge you the ETF and say you breached the contract)
The new Droid, now available on Verizon Wireless with unlimited voice, text, and data plans from just $200/mo.*
*By unlimited we really mean 5GB/mo or we'll cancel your contract and charge you $350. - danrien, on 11/07/2009, -0/+8I think in this case the carrier's are more the pimps and the phone producers are more the whores. The whores are the ones who do all the dirty work and produce the product, the pimp just keeps the operation going.
- HotLeper, on 11/07/2009, -2/+9that's great.. I am holding off on buying an iphone until there is one with a verizon logo on the front staring at me.
- ZooMigo, on 11/07/2009, -0/+7And Verizon just doubled their cancellation fees. Sounds like a wonderful thing in the making.
- zman8479, on 11/08/2009, -2/+9HAHA AT&T has the crappy network.
- wlmafia, on 11/07/2009, -1/+8I really wonder if it's AT&T or the iPhone that has bad service. I have had ATT for 10 years and NEVER dropped calls until I got the iPhone.
- babar77, on 11/08/2009, -1/+8I don't know what you are talking about. The plan I just got with Verizon is the exact same amount as the iPhone with AT&T, which for me is under $100/mo. The exchange support is free, or at least I had no problems setting it up, and I don't pay any extra for it.
The droid so far has been a dream, and I've been an iPhone user since it came out. The droid just does all the things I've been wanting the iPhone to do forever. I'm not usually one to care for advertisement, I like to find out stuff for myself, but the campaign with the droid was spot on. No coverage problems, and the network seems more responsive. I got screwed over twice with AT&T and Apple, I'm done with both companies. - Mike17102, on 11/07/2009, -15/+22Too bad Verizon is just as bad.
- AlienMushroom, on 11/07/2009, -2/+8But Verizon's customer service isn't any better than AT&T's.
- ileftfark, on 11/07/2009, -0/+6See:
Newton
Lisa
ROKR
Pippin (Oh god, the ***** Pippin)
Cyberdog - Mike17102, on 11/07/2009, -0/+5Because there is no difference between a device maker locking its own hardware and a phone company stripping out existing features.....
- SuchADigger, on 11/07/2009, -1/+6If you think Apple will allow someone else's logo on the front of the phone, you are gravely mistaken. :)
It'll be more like @DeadFox1 said: a verizon logo on the status bar at the top. - jmbrysk, on 11/07/2009, -0/+5As much as I hope this is true, I can't help but be a little disappointed in the smaller screen.
- buffalogums, on 11/07/2009, -1/+5I'd prefer it to not be on the front staring at me, but yes, you are correct...that would be awesome.
- MacHarborGuy, on 11/07/2009, -1/+5the one thing people keep failing to remember is that Apple didn't just walk into the phone market and kick ass as a fluke. They broke into the consumer market with years and years of selling the iPod, iPod Nano, iPod Shuffle, iPod Mini, iPod with Video, etc. Most places you looked, you'd see (and still do in some cases) someone wearing Apple Earbuds. It became the 21st Century's "WalkMan" in terms of mindshare.
Also remember that there was a generic Apple/iTunes phone called the ROKR, and that didn't hit the market so well.
The iPhone, as well as the iPod Touch (which, IMO, is a transitional device to get iPod users to switch to the iPhone eventually), had a long lineage of devices, successful devices, behind it that assisted in getting the iPhone into the consumer space.

- rant time not specific to story -
Who the hell is Palm? They made PDA's in the late 90s and on. They split into two companies, the founders of the company left and made Handspring, which failed as a long lasting platform. *I* know this, because i've followed technology for quite awhile. Back in High School I was impressed with the PowerPC processors, and my teacher said it wasn't going to amount to anything. What is PowerPC now? It is powering the Nintendo Wii and the XBox 360, the two top selling and top adopted video game consoles on the market today. However, I am not the general consumer, and the general consumer probably has no real idea about who Palm is or what they have done in the past. Ask them what an iPod is and they know it's Apple and it's popular.
The only Palm device I ever owned was the Zire, which was a PoS. I have not tried out the Pre, so I will not say one way or another about it's potential, but in the world of consumers, brand and track record means a lot more than fanboy praise or bashing. - the8thbit, on 11/07/2009, -1/+5"your monopoly will come to an end."
A monopoly with 14% of the marketshare?
"It's funny how everything is always the next iPhone killer and doesn't even leave a dent."
Symbian and Blackberry both have a larger marketshare than iPhone OS X, (with Symbian having a market share over three times the size of the iPhone's) and Windows Mobile is down by less than 4%... - Meocross, on 11/07/2009, -0/+4ABOUT ***** TIME.
