- inactive, on 04/30/2008, -6/+55$200 discount? What's the catch... 4 years contract with AT&T?
- PhattyPhattMatt, on 04/30/2008, -3/+34I think it is smart for AT&T to do that, they are not worried about getting money off of the phone, but about getting the contracts. So subsidize the phones as much as you want AT&T!!
- sn00kie, on 04/30/2008, -6/+36Most ridiculous speculation ever. How on the world could you jump from a rumor of 200 dollar price cut, to unlocked iphones in Apple stores. The logic in this article jumps all over the place and it doesn't make sense. The only thing that was consistent is the price cut, which was already on the page so I'm burying this for being a duplicate.
"If it doesn't make sense, it's probably not true" - Judge Judy - PabloMac, on 04/30/2008, -7/+33"This report, based on the word of a single anonymous source..."
Buried. - diggB, on 04/30/2008, -8/+30A $200 discount and adding 3G would be certainly allow Apple to exceed its goal of selling 10 million phones by the end of the year.

- wildeoscar, on 04/30/2008, -10/+23this isn't the early adopter gem any more, to get folks to stay locked into contracts, ATT is gonna have to offer something sweet to the existing fans... a cheap upgrade path would get me to stick.
- cadmiumpaint, on 04/30/2008, -0/+12you might be on to something...
- diggB, on 04/30/2008, -2/+11Bad link. Sorry! (i.e. Don't expect to edit your comments and expect long links to work afterwords)
Good link (I hope).

- digjam, on 05/01/2008, -0/+8what is this iphone evrybody keeps talking about here...??
- timlopez, on 05/01/2008, -0/+7You misspelled "Rumor" and typed "Report" - Just letting ya know.
- jpezzznuts, on 05/01/2008, -0/+6Holy ***** dude. Were you a) locked in an elevator for days with no way to ***** b) that 9 year old angry playing chess or c) a f*cking lunatic?
- dabdinoor, on 05/01/2008, -0/+5What a ridiculous report, if any new device comes out it's going to be a 3G iPhone with 32gb+ for $499, maybe a $399 16gb version. The $199 sounds like a joke but maybe the old iPhone 8gb moves down to that pricepoint with the 16gb sitting at $299. I freely admit that I'm guessing but I would wager I'm 10 times more accurate than this report.
- marcushe, on 04/30/2008, -3/+8The problem of subsidizing the cost is not up to AT&T - it's up to Apple.
Apple is a strong believer of standardized pricing, so that a consumer feels that they got what they paid for. Wouldn't a consumer feel a $200 phone is lower-quality than a $400 phone? Yes. I do marketing for Apple, and we aren't allowed to have any giveaways because it "devalues" the product in the eye of the consumer. Apple wants you to lust for it. However, If Apple wants to sell iPhones, subsidizing through AT&T is the way to go - and I'm sure AT&T wouldn't mind giving away even a free iphone with all they contract-ripoffs they'd be signing. It's a choice Apple will have to make. - digjam, on 05/01/2008, -0/+5No, $120 data package
- kuwan, on 05/01/2008, -0/+5Yeah, I don't understand the logic that $200 price cut = unlocked iPhones. It's funny to see how far a rumor from a single unsubstantiated source can go though.
Here's my next jump in logic: Unlocked iPhones means Sprint-compatible iPhones on their high-speed data network!
Never mind that Sprint uses EVDO and AT&T doesn't. Unlocked iPhones means the iPhone is coming to Sprint! - jordan314, on 05/01/2008, -0/+4I was thinking of jumping ship from my T-mobile contract when 3G was announced. If it's $199 I still will, but if official unlocked ones come out I will just grab the more expensive ones and use it with T-mobile. Either way this is sweet!
- protodon, on 05/01/2008, -0/+4I'm gonna get one the day it comea out. That way i'll have an entire year with it before it becomes obsolete!
- virtualball, on 05/01/2008, -0/+3Exactly, while I love my iPhone, I would like a cheap upgrade for the new one if I want it. $50-$100 would be more than enough to please me, especially after I paid $600 for the first one :)
- inactive, on 05/01/2008, -1/+4Why are we rewarding the ***** at AT&T for their association with the NSA? For that matter, do we care about Apple's association with AT&T? Do you care?
- SuperJimmyJimbo, on 05/01/2008, -0/+3yeah, I'd bite for another few years if they sweetened the pot except...they won't because they don't have to, at least not in the first few months...I can hear the fanboys queuing up already (because I'm in the front of the line)
- grey580, on 05/01/2008, -0/+3iPhone trumps NSA wiretaps..... that's why that stimulus check is going out. You know everyone is gonna be buying an iPhone with that money.
- SouthsideIrish, on 05/01/2008, -1/+4Hello! I have had a phone for almost a year, when the new phone comes out. Why would ATT owe me a thing? I got a years use from the phone, so no one owes me a dime.
- Indierocka, on 04/30/2008, -1/+3If you read the report you would have seen that Apple wouldn't be selling it cheaper, AT&T would and they would recoup the cost after a few months of service
- wolfboyZ, on 04/30/2008, -1/+3For $200 less, I wouldn't be surprised if they became as common as Razrs.
- sonofashoe, on 05/01/2008, -0/+2Horrible chunk of drivel. AT&T stores selling $199 unlocked iphones? Stupid writing.
- NJank, on 05/01/2008, -0/+2it's like Soma...
- neodorian, on 05/01/2008, -0/+2As nuts as your post comes off, I also don't use AT&T's service for the first reason you give. They aren't the only offender but they are the worst that has come to light. I'm not gonna pitch a bitch. I just don't buy anything from them. If people just voted with their wallets we would see what is more important: liberty or gadgets. For better or worse, I believe the market has spoken on that one.
- ccoch97, on 05/01/2008, -0/+2i call shenanigans!
- Capta1nA, on 05/01/2008, -0/+2You will only get EDGE speeds on T-Mobile - even when (if) T-Mobile switches on their 3G data, it is on a different frequency.
- iluvatar1003, on 05/01/2008, -0/+2Dugg for "28 zillion"
- ioncelovedjane, on 05/01/2008, -0/+2such a fanboy.
- Stephenishere, on 05/01/2008, -0/+11984 reference?
- heystoopid, on 05/01/2008, -0/+1Oh woe is me , since the the Gartner report indicated global sales of 1.15 billion units , with 49 million in the US market sector in the last quarter , Apple would need to sell far more as current growth rate in sales is 16% on average .
I believe the expression is basically you just lost plot and the pot at the same time ! - sixthree, on 05/01/2008, -0/+1LOL I DIGGED IT
- inactive, on 05/01/2008, -0/+1I find it interesting that your only frame of reference to current events is what you find here on Digg. ie: 'The Elevator Guy' and 'Angry 9 Year Old Kid'. No big problem with that, but thank you for illustrating my point: non existent priorities.
- inactive, on 05/01/2008, -0/+1You are right about that. Voting with our wallets instead of outsourcing our collective power. I agree. Peace.
- yuutokun, on 05/01/2008, -0/+13G in America? By the gods!
- inactive, on 05/01/2008, -0/+1You cynical *****! Good point.
- jo21, on 05/01/2008, -0/+1not actually apple goal is to have 1% of the global marketshare,, to apple to get that they have to sell 10 million iphone EACH quarter and for a year.
- LordVance, on 05/01/2008, -0/+1nvm
- NJank, on 05/01/2008, -0/+1Answer: no
- Tenoq, on 05/01/2008, -0/+1The new iPhone should be UTMS. :p
- inactive, on 05/01/2008, -4/+5***** AT&T. Why you wanna reward their participation in the NSA wiretapping program? That you can even use their names in the same sentence...you must turn off your AT&T...and all for what? The latest cell phone gadget? You deserve 4 more years of George Bush. No wonder America is being driven off a cliff: HER PRIORITIES ARE NON EXISTENT. Rising fuel and food costs, anemic economic growth:.... 'OOOOOO Lookee! A new cell phone thingy, GTAIV and Iron Man are being released the same weekend, and OOOOO The Scary Black Preacher Man is gonna get us all!!! Land of the Feeble. Home of The Naive.
- NJank, on 05/01/2008, -1/+2but I heard from Verizon that Sprint said that AT&T also let T-mobile get to 3rd base... such a slut
- HolyChimp, on 05/01/2008, -0/+1Sorry, I figured using the word bajillion would make it clear i was exaggerating... Apparently not!
And I don't think Moore's Law applies to data networks, only computer hardware speeds. - redwallhp, on 05/01/2008, -0/+1And it's going to be the size of a dime. The discount is for when you lose it and need another. When you replace your dime-sized iPhone, you will have to update your contract with AT&T for an additional 5 years...
- RyeBrye, on 05/01/2008, -0/+1"This would probably mean an end to the revenue-sharing agreement between the two companies, though, as it would obviously end the exclusivity arrangement."
How does this obviously end an exclusivity arrangement? Selling unlocked phones does allow them to be on other carriers - true - but the exclusivity also includes visual voicemail, and Apple marketing. - sapped, on 05/01/2008, -0/+1Can you point me to this plan on their site? I am thinking of switching and their family plans (+ data for all) looked more expensive than that.
