- blorc, on 08/27/2008, -7/+70This isn't surprising. It seems fairly obvious to me that if a great number of people are using a product, especially when compared to previously, that more "problems" are going to be reported.
Take the Apple computer. Record numbers of people are purchasing Apple computers, so it stands to reason that the raw number of people reporting problems would increase, although the percentage is likely the same if Apple's practices have remained the same. Likewise, you have to take into account how many "problems" are actually problems and not just picky people.
I don't mean to completely dismiss complaints as being picky, but come on... we've all worked in jobs where we've had to deal with this people, and retail is rife with them. I've had people try to return perfectly good computers because of a superficial scratch on the edge of a notebook that you couldn't notice unless you were actively looking for it. The same goes for connectivity. Some people's expectations are simply too high.
And as this article shows, often times blame can be misplaced, especially when the situation is frustrating.
All of this applies to the iPhone. Are some iPhone owners genuinely experiencing poor performance with their phone? I'm sure some are. Are some people being too picky? I'm sure some are. Are the problems some people are experiencing with their phones widespread and extraordinary? No. Are all the problems necessarily the fault of Apple or the iPhone? No. - Astheria, on 08/27/2008, -5/+47The problem is AT&T's network, not the iPhone.
But it's so much more sensationalist knock the iPhone as the problem now isn't it? - Palaceguard, on 08/27/2008, -4/+41AT&T can't handle the amount of iPhones being used
- seldon452, on 08/27/2008, -4/+35Your post has nothing to do with the iphone 3G's allegedly faulty hardware.
Every iphone story is not an excuse for you to tell us your problems. - inactive, on 08/27/2008, -7/+32This was a very well written article, but I'm sure everyone who supported Apple until all the facts were in, will be accused of being foaming-at-the-mouth fanboys. No, we're not fanboys, we just don't accept knee jerk reactions from financial analysts with anonymous "sources."
- scabbers, on 08/27/2008, -0/+19A lot of phones ***** on the signal bar, especially when not active on a call. You can't compare one to another and say "this one has a better signal" because it's basically just lying.
- robbh66, on 08/27/2008, -2/+21Yes- so much so that people are lining up for hours every day to return their phones.
...Oh wait....those people are buying them. Yep, looks like a PR disaster to me. - btikalsky, on 08/27/2008, -2/+21Sprint and AT&T use two entirely different networks so your argument is completely unsubstantiated.
- ileftfark, on 08/27/2008, -1/+14[anecdotal evidence to support or refute your claim]
- btschul, on 08/27/2008, -12/+25Can't afford one, huh?
- kev01, on 08/27/2008, -2/+14It was always a network side problem. AT&T's cost cutting measures improperly upgraded it's 2/2.5G (GSM/EDGE) towers to 3G (making hybrid 3G/2.5G towers), instead of re-mapping cities with new 3G towers and covering the cities properly. Cell tower mapping is different for 2G and 3G, and so, the advertised AT&T 3G coverage map is a lie, and in reality has many stop gaps and "holes", hence dropped calls etc. So, because of the "Hybrid" tower method of launching it's 3G, it has resulted in lower than expected call capacity/tower in addition to the "gaps" in coverage ... resulting in low 3G signal bars, constant fallbacks to edge, and dropped calls (cell phone and network side stressing the load handling)
So.. class action lawsuit against AT&T for false advertising, or not providing proper service that you're paying for, and/or Apple should end their AT&T exclusive carrier agreement deal (they must have included a clause somewhere about what happens if AT&T doesn't run their network as they should), and should launch iPhones on another carrier - InCider, on 08/27/2008, -2/+13As the article notes, the BlackBerry Bold has the same 3G problems on AT&T's network.
The article itself does not also describe the software problems on the iPhone 3G / 2.0.x, which are a big deal. That relates to slow interface problems (a few of which have been fixed in the last month, but there's still some) and problems with 3rd party apps spazing out. iPhone 2.1 addresses all that next month (as a linked article noted). If it doesn't, Apple is going to have a more serious problem than AT&T's weaknesses, which are also being worked out (this was in the article.)
- mgill3, on 08/27/2008, -2/+13Two entirely different types of network technology. It's possible that in your area, Sprint has a much better coverage map compared to AT&T, or it's also possible that your particular phone has a hardware issue.
- Khast, on 08/27/2008, -2/+12Not a big fan of Apple products...but lay off with calling the problem Apple's. From the complaints on the 3G connection, it is 99.9% likely that the people are in a poor 3G network (safe to assume, as the US is where most of the complaints are, and 3G is not available in most areas here.)
I keep hearing iPhone problem after another....usually regarding the 3G or other network related problem..... I've still yet to see the headline "AT&T at fault for poor 3G reception" naw...never see it. - inactive, on 08/27/2008, -2/+11Maybe your hardware went bad because you obviously like to type long ass, pointless stories? The touch screen can only take so much...
- whiskeymb, on 08/27/2008, -2/+11No, it's the network...
- mannymix03, on 08/27/2008, -3/+11I think this just confirms what everyone knows, iPhone has problems (I own one), but this particular problem is where AT&T dropped the ball
- SouthsideIrish, on 08/27/2008, -1/+9Did you do a restore from a backup? If you did then you just keep moving the problems to each new firmware release. Until I restored the firmware, and set it up as a new phone, I had the same problems as you.
- MrDo, on 08/27/2008, -0/+8true, there even were a digg some time ago to a article about that.
- jpop, on 08/27/2008, -1/+9Thomasmck, I would search around for the 1.1.4 firmware and find out how to load it myself. It's out there, ignore the tech support guys.
In re. all your other problems, you seem to be a bit lacking on the knowledge side. The 1st Gen iPhone has no 3G, and the firmware upgrade to 2.x didn't change the hardware (so there's no broadband chip change or anything). ie. all the problems you are reading about possible hardware problems on the iPhone 3G do not apply to you. The only thing it could be is firmware. - spankaccount, on 08/28/2008, -2/+92.0.2 works fine on millions of iPhones, dude. There is obviously something wrong with your phone, which is out of warranty. Why don't you buy a new phone and stop complaining?
- Zippo, on 08/28/2008, -1/+8Complaints are louder than complements
- Palaceguard, on 08/27/2008, -3/+9Apple stores are out of stock
- stuy486, on 08/27/2008, -5/+11And I'm supposed to care... why?
- earlvanze, on 08/28/2008, -0/+5This is the same example as the survey that shows that "95% of car accidents happen close to home." That may be true, but bias, because 95% of the time, you are driving close to home!
- hangman16, on 08/27/2008, -4/+9bad luck? it's all in your head? i dunno. i know several people who recently purchased them and have had no problems.
- jp12380, on 08/28/2008, -0/+4It is probably a combination of things,
1 the iphone software has glitches and just doesn't work that well.
2. It is ATT's network
3. The Iphone may not be quite as good as other phones at receiving signal, which if you think about it, does not mean it's "broken" it means that the phone is working as it was designed and it's designed poorly. - Thrdstringer, on 08/27/2008, -10/+14Something written on "appleinsider" is obviously going to bias for any apple product.
- inactive, on 08/28/2008, -1/+5makes sense, I have no problems with my 3G up in canada on rogers.
well except that fact that i'm paying an arm and a leg for it =D - btschul, on 08/28/2008, -0/+4Can you give any example of how or why Apple's software sucks? No? Then ***** off, troll.
- aussieNickuss, on 08/27/2008, -0/+4I get eradicate variations in the signal in Melbourne CBD (supposedly where the greatest coverage is), but I'm pretty sure it all comes down to poor Optus coverage overall.
- Me1000, on 08/28/2008, -2/+5With that grammar it is likely that you can't afford one either...
- jpop, on 08/28/2008, -0/+3I concur. However, everything I hear says that the US is around the bottom of the barrel 3Gwise. The EU, etc. has a better distribution of towers, etc.
- SquareWheel, on 08/28/2008, -0/+3Heh, nice.
- Weaselboy, on 08/28/2008, -0/+3RTFA
- gn0stik, on 08/27/2008, -3/+6And you can never seem to find her "spot"
- btschul, on 08/28/2008, -3/+6Trolls suck.
- fangorious, on 08/28/2008, -0/+3I think you raise a point that bears consideration, but also consider that there are likely also crappy networks worldwide too.
- reticulate, on 08/28/2008, -0/+2I have an iPhone 3G on Telstra here in Australia, and have had no problems whatsoever with coverage or call drop-outs.
I'd rate the reception as pretty much the same as my previous 3G Nokia.
While this is anecdotal, it seems to me the vast majority of these complaints are coming from AT&T users. As for the comparisons I've seen people quoting between this phone and another one on the same network, it should be pointed out that phone manufacturers have been known to outright lie with their signal bars. Same goes for battery life indicators.
I'm not saying Apple doesn't have problems but by and large I think the real issues are with the software, not with any physical hardware deficiencies. - inactive, on 08/28/2008, -0/+2Yes but will it run Crysis?
- anaesthetica, on 08/28/2008, -0/+2Yes, but the lab test results done in Sweden were not done by AppleInsider. The AppleInsider story is reporting the lab findings, and as far as I can tell, there's no reason why the lab would be biased one way or another, nor is there any glaring example of AppleInsider spinning the results.
- kev01, on 08/28/2008, -1/+3I haven't heard of any reported issues to the SAME SCALE as what AT&T users get. I bounce between Cali and Toronto, and Rogers seems fine.
2) one is accepted onto the cell tower, the other isn't. IMEI preferred coding or whatever AT&T may be doing behind the curtains.. - johnalan, on 08/28/2008, -0/+2you know what, as I sit here and write this on my 3g iPhone which is of course connected to the edge network as it cannot receive 3g signal in the centre of Dublin , Ireland a place with full 3g coverage. I wonder why my girlfriends old nokia sittin on the desk beside me has FULL 3G coverage on the EXACT same network. I work in telecomms as an engineer for one of the worlds biggest 3g network software and hardware providers and I can tell you for an absolute fact, in this country it is not the network operators fault. 5 of my friends have iPhones all have same issues as myself regarding 3g coverage.
- gforce051, on 08/27/2008, -6/+8Stop ***** dropping it in the toilet and smashing it with hammers.
- aristotle0dude, on 08/30/2008, -0/+1The 850 Band is in use by Rogers in Canada. There are plenty of iPhone owners using their iPhones on both 1900 and 850 bands in Canada.
http://www.gsmworld.com/roaming/gsminfo/net_carw.s ... - poprocksandsoda, on 08/28/2008, -1/+2Honestly I was a Windows Mobile honk until the iPhone came out ... I don't even like Apple products and wouldn't use OS X outside of my iPhone for anything. It's simply the best phone made.
- johnalan, on 08/29/2008, -0/+1Yeah? well do you know what else would be nice?? It would be nice to see REAL WORLD USAGE of the iPhone follow the 'research' results!!
- WaveRunningNakd, on 08/28/2008, -0/+1my guess is: it's a little from column a and a little from column b.
for the record, my iphone works flawlessly. - boxarox, on 08/28/2008, -0/+1said it before, must say it again...the 3g iphones will not connect in our office with AT&T, whereas all the other 3g Phones do so reliably. Tell me again it's the network? Iphones have no problem? ...people are getting pissed and are embarrssed with their iPhones. Although, your situation may vary.
- 511pf, on 08/28/2008, -0/+1RTFA - They didn't test the 850 Mhz band used by AT&T in the US. I'm not saying it's the phone, but this test only proves the 1900 Mhz and 2100 Mhz bands aren't the problem. It says nothing about 850 Mhz.
