- Lorian, on 11/04/2007, -81/+438Kinda funny, but definitely should have been removed for retail release. Very unprofessional.
- Azimuth1, on 11/04/2007, -167/+523Does Apple come across as a bunch of douchebags to anyone else?
- OKeric, on 05/12/2008, -79/+310At least Windows users get an error, on a Mac the thing just freezes.
- xxTazxx, on 11/04/2007, -49/+232I have to admit though (I'm gonna get dugg down for this), I haven't seen the BSOD on a PC for some time, at least not the XP ones.
- PhillipJFry, on 11/03/2007, -36/+2021998 called, they want their joke back.
- romistrub, on 11/02/2007, -97/+238The last time I've seen the BSOD on a Windows system was when my hard drive failed three years ago... This move is not only classless and pathetic, it's inaccurate.
- totorototoro, on 11/04/2007, -11/+109Hey, I still have that CRT!
- dukeeeey, on 11/01/2007, -16/+107blue screen of death normally means hardware or driver failure
- FutureGuy, on 11/04/2007, -20/+109I guess the only place I can go to see a BSOD is a Mac, haven't seen that on my PC for years many be. If it was MS doing something remotely like this every article on digg front page would have been about it.
- fuzzywitman, on 11/04/2007, -66/+148Who the ***** cares? I think the icon is funny; why bother wasting the time to replace it, let alone write an entire blog entry about how to do it? People have too much time on their hands.
- vertinox, on 11/03/2007, -43/+122Unprofessional but classy. Most of Apples target market would enjoy the said humor, including Windows users. I mean... In my office job I have a blue screen saver.
And its even released by Microsoft! http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sysinternals/Util ...
Stop being so uptight people... Laugh. It will save a trip to the heart doctor. - sleepwalkers, on 11/03/2007, -30/+106Yeah, I'm a user of Apple computers and they still seem like a bunch of douchebags (especially as of late).
- inactive, on 11/05/2007, -15/+80If this icon was in any Linux OS everyone here would think it was cool as hell.
- sedawk, on 11/05/2007, -31/+85What a bunch on whiners! I think it is pretty funny for such a large company to have a sense of humour -- a lot of people here need one.
- Elranzer, on 11/06/2007, -14/+63I shake with fear to what might happen when the cloud of smug from Leopard clashes with the smug from George Clooney and San Francisco.
- synack, on 11/05/2007, -30/+78It's funny, it gets attention, and let's face it: If there is any one thing that Windows is (in)famous for, it's the BSOD.
- TheRedNewt, on 10/31/2007, -3/+50But it's different when it's a competitor. It comes across as much more mean spirited when you make those kind of jokes about someone you are competing with.
- mrjit, on 11/03/2007, -31/+75I'm a windows fag (admin), and I find it pretty funny.
- harrybeave, on 11/06/2007, -6/+47I think some of the folks at Apple still think the latest version of Windows is Windows 98 ...
- Karyyk, on 11/05/2007, -28/+67And why would I want to change this?
- bradallen18, on 11/03/2007, -33/+67i had one the other day. horray vista.
- BlackJackJester, on 11/01/2007, -14/+48certainly setting a dangerous precedent, they will be dethroned one day, or come out with a crappy product, and are gonna feel a serious burn. Companies should be held to a higher moral authority, and this just makes Apple look...immature and unprofessional.
- sam98597, on 10/31/2007, -7/+39The only times I have even got a BSOD was because of bad drivers, or corrupt RAM. All this "BSODs=Windows" ***** is irritating. Ever hear of a kernel panic?
- MioTheGreat, on 10/31/2007, -10/+42In my experience, and from a purely technical standpoint looking at Vista, Vista is less prone to BSODs than XP.
Vista has in place driver models that in the event of a driver crash, the whole system is much less likely to go down. Now, if you have something like a poorly coded chipset driver, obviously Windows won't be able to do anything about it when it ***** up, but for things like graphics cards and audio drivers, they should not be taking your system down anymore. In the event of a graphics card crash, 90% of the time, you'll just get a screen flicker on Vista, and a little baloon popup informing you that the display driver crashed and had to be restarted (Graphics drivers still have kernel mode parts and can take down your system if something goes really, really, really wrong. But as I said, that's far less likely to happen in Vista). I'm not sure what happens during an audio driver crash. I assume the sound just sounds screwed up for half a second or so.
It is, however, true that Vista is more picky about memory than XP. If a system with bad RAM runs XP fine, it might BSoD under Vista. Two reasons come to mind for why: Superfetch, eating 100% of RAM 100% of the time, and the fact that Vista will probably be doing more checking of memory for security reasons. - bbqsalad, on 11/03/2007, -9/+41Yeah because windows users are pimps. Like Steve Ballmer.
- bradleyland, on 11/02/2007, -11/+43I with you on this one. I was more than a little embarrassed to show off my fancy new operating system, only to find this BSOD icon when demoing Mac's "fantastic interoperability." It was one of those "are they serious?" moments for onlookers. Some people thought I put it in there myself... which is even worse, because it's a reflection on me as well, and I'm an IT professional who makes a living at supporting Windows PCs.
- BlackJackJester, on 11/01/2007, -4/+32Not to burst a bubble or anything, but OSX had some pretty serious freezes in relation to third party drivers. Yea, it doesn't Blue screen, but it does freeze.
- llamapalooza87, on 11/03/2007, -16/+43You know, by calling Mac OS X (and its users) smug you're really no better than Mac users poking fun at Windows's stability. It's a joke, lighten up!
- bradallen18, on 11/01/2007, -12/+39this is true - but there are also many many video games that have bsods in them. often when you see a monitor in a video game it's sporting the blue screen.
- zeno60, on 11/06/2007, -6/+31So digg you up to disprove your point? You just created a conundrum.
- FredFredrickson, on 11/01/2007, -1/+26XP is quite stable, really... as long as you're not some idiot who installs Bonzai Buddy.
- neonfunk, on 11/01/2007, -18/+42oh fer christs sake, get a sense of humor... it's healthy rivalry
- DiggzDE, on 11/01/2007, -11/+34You have some of most retarded comments I have seen on Digg. Barely a step up from the spam comments popping up all over the place.
- BlackJackJester, on 10/31/2007, -9/+31Thats really not an accurate stereotype for anything but Linux....
- noahhoward, on 10/31/2007, -8/+28They're not anywhere near as frequent but they still exist.
- theojanke, on 10/31/2007, -4/+22But video games aren't operating systems competing against Windows.
- c0nv1ct, on 11/01/2007, -9/+27For the love of god, who cares. People find anything to complain about these days. Get over it.
- drlha, on 10/31/2007, -2/+20Something is seriously wrong with your Mac if its crashes once a week. In fact if you have any OS, Windows Vista, XP, Mac OS X or Linux I would advise you to get someone to look into it if it were crashing once a week, that is simply not normal.
- goflyers, on 11/01/2007, -4/+20or you use your computer for only e-mail, web browsing, and your precious photo album...
- EntropyFan, on 11/01/2007, -4/+20In Soviet Russia, jokes call themselves back to 1998
Or something like that. I'm new to cliches - mlerner, on 11/01/2007, -34/+50I'm pretty sure i'll get dugg down but I find it sad only now all the Apple users are just realizing now that Apple is worse than Microsoft. Old Steve jobs all have you by the tail. And if you digg me down you just prove my point.
- Malachai, on 10/31/2007, -5/+21Irrelevant.
Also, people who try to shift the blame or change the subject when they feel guilty are lame. - noahhoward, on 10/31/2007, -20/+36Innacurate? Tell me you don't automatically think Windows when you see a blue screen? It is an iconic symbol of Windows and it sticks.
- kweeky, on 10/31/2007, -4/+18You wouldn't see a BSOD like that either - the one used in Leopard is designed after the Windows 9x BSODs.
I love blue screens however, if you ever have dodgy RAM or an IRQ conflict, a BSOD will help ascertain the problem (sure it's not very user friendly - and that's one of the major problems with some elements of Windows) but blue screens have directed me to the source of the problem more times than caused me upset ;) - drouk1556, on 11/01/2007, -0/+14You're right. When something goes terribly wrong on a Mac, it doesn't crash. It just panics and stops, hoping you'll eventually walk away.
- inactive, on 11/01/2007, -10/+24I think its funny, so i will leave mine.
- sjm20k, on 11/01/2007, -12/+26you guys DO realize that microsoft and apple are competitors right?
- saturdaysinbed, on 10/31/2007, -10/+22I'm glad someone has a sense of humor. Even if it isn't terribly funny, it's just a joke; not something to bang war drums against Apple for.
- Bamborzled, on 11/01/2007, -1/+13Then why didn't they remove it?
- Nesh, on 10/31/2007, -2/+13Actually, that's pretty descriptive. It gives the dll that failed and the program that caused it to fail, along with an error code that's unique enough to probably return a solution when googled.
