- twoboxen, on 11/07/2007, -5/+117The best app for mac.
- inactive, on 11/08/2007, -3/+53Free does not always mean open source.
- philo23, on 11/07/2007, -1/+46this app saves so much time doing stuff its unimaginable.
- inactive, on 11/07/2007, -0/+29This is the most important application on my Mac. So much more an an app launcher.
- manitoba98xp, on 11/07/2007, -0/+27At the most basic level, it's a launcher. Deep down, it can do much more. It's a means of expressing action, but you really have to try it to understand. There are also plenty of articles and videos detailing Quicksilver, I suggest you take a look if you're interested. (Macbreak, for example, did an episode, IIRC.)
- geminitojanus, on 11/07/2007, -1/+24Taking a cursory glance at the code and it's extreme usage of Cocoa, I'll doubt it. The only platform that /might/ be able to get it is GNUstep, and that's pushing it.
Sadly, the same goes for Growl. Alas. - DiabloConQueso, on 11/07/2007, -1/+20Quicksilver's tough to describe -- it's a launcher, shortcut manager, and so much more.
Hit up www.blacktree.com and learn more, although Quicksilver really has to be used to be discovered and understood. - super_spyder, on 11/07/2007, -12/+28It's funny, I thought quicksilver always was open source. Well apparently I was wrong.
- skyshock1, on 11/07/2007, -1/+16Oh PLEEEEEASE port this to GTK/Qt!!! Katapult is OK, but Quicksilver is just so much more incredible.
- kignjr3, on 11/07/2007, -0/+15Using just the keyboard you can
Launch Apps
Make archives
FTP files
Send emails
Control iTunes
Find files
Execute Terminal commands
Access bookmarks
Mouse gestures
and much much much more... - skyshock1, on 11/07/2007, -0/+15http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EBvFUhTqKK4

http://docs.blacktree.com/quicksilver/quick_tips - gharding, on 11/07/2007, -0/+12I wish more of these ultra-useful-tool developers would go open-source. Nifty projects like this seem like they'd flourish greatly under the open source light. Even if it just means people forking it or just using parts of the code, there have been so many little projects where I've thought "man, I wish I could see the code for that". Kudos to the developer.. big step in the right direction!!
- Ratatosk, on 11/07/2007, -10/+23let's hope it will be ported to other plattforms:)
- stevensj2, on 11/07/2007, -1/+13Not until there is Cocoa for linux, which is pretty much the same as: Never.
Which is unfortunate, I agree. - kignjr3, on 11/07/2007, -2/+14Dude, it's open source. Apple can use it for free.
- mrsteveman1, on 11/07/2007, -4/+15And yet the majority of people with any sense choose not to play stupid word games for effect.
Open source means what it sounds like, Free makes it sound like poorly made software. - Zippo, on 11/07/2007, -0/+10No kidding. Every time I get on another Mac without Quicksilver... it feels... empty, wrong, naked... just weird.
- RexMaxus, on 11/10/2007, -2/+12True, but free as in freedom doesn't always mean free as in beer.
- tian2992, on 11/07/2007, -0/+9Also remember to download Plugins!!!!
- stewacide, on 11/07/2007, -0/+9I hope this means it'll get top-to-bottom Spotlight integration
- devindotcom, on 11/07/2007, -0/+8Or it means it's at the beginning of a sentence. Free!
- kineticarl, on 11/08/2007, -0/+8I think Launchy is a stripped down version. I use and love launchy for finding files and launching apps, but from what I understand, quicksilver is an order of magnitude more robust.
- chrisbarr, on 11/07/2007, -0/+8you can browser fils with it to, and if you turn on advanced features and install the printing module you can do some very cool tasks, like print multiple documents one after teh other with just a few keystrokes.
Apple+Space [type a folder name or something] drill to the file you want to print with arrow keys and press the comma key, go to the next file and press comma, repeat this for as many files as you need to print. hit tab and select the action you want by typing [print] and hit return. now it prints all those documents.
normally you'd have to open each one by one, print one, wait for it to finish, print the next, etc. - jackyyll, on 11/08/2007, -0/+7Please, tell me how does one do mouse gestures with just a keyboard? :p
- potatodemon, on 11/07/2007, -0/+7I hope the code is as beautiful as the application.
- Firehed, on 11/07/2007, -0/+7It lets you execute a lot of (often time-consuming) actions with a couple keystrokes. For example, if I've got a picture selected that I want to resize, I hit: cmd+space (invoke quicksilver), "sel" ("Finder Selection"), tab, "sc" ("Scale Image"), tab, "640" (640px width), enter. It takes a bit of getting used to, but that action takes less time than moving my mouse down to the dock to open an image editor, let alone perform the resizing actions.
There are a ton of other quick manipulation actions that QS can perform - adding text to the beginning or end of a document (great if you've got a notes.txt on your desktop or something, since you can grab the file with the first couple letters rather than using Expose to reveal it, then actually find it and click on it, etc). Scaling images, as noted above. You can set alarms so that you'll get giant text across your desktop at X time or in X minutes in a few keystrokes. All sorts of fun stuff.
And of course, launch programs really quickly. - mathmanjeffy, on 11/07/2007, -1/+7What a pompous and *****-ish statement you just made. Maybe he wants to know what it is because he's never heard about it and wants to learn more and join the discussion. Yes you could point him at google, but you could also do what DiabloConQueso did before you and spend LESS time answering the question than you did insulting him for it.
- simplenation, on 11/07/2007, -9/+15whats so great about it? serious question. please list some cool features before you digg me down. the website doesn't say much about it. thanks
- Nuak, on 11/07/2007, -0/+6Gnome Launch Box: http://developer.imendio.com/projects/gnome-launch ...
But right now it's only a Quicksilver wannabe. - antitab, on 11/07/2007, -0/+6If they separated the core functionality from the interface in the code, which is unlikely unless QS was intended to be portable from the start, then porting to other platforms should be as simple as taking the core and slapping a new interface on top of it. Objective-C through the GNU and even to some extent Cocoa (through GNUStep) are already capable of being used on other platforms, so this theoretical core shouldn't be a problem for portability – just the Cocoa UI (which isn't much but a pop-up, so...) I guess we'll see whether or not that was the case as soon as the code is looked over.
- Zippo, on 11/07/2007, -0/+6Spotlight's good, I'll admit, but Quicksilver's snappier in my experience... and far more robust.
One of my favourite uses is for phone numbers. When I'm at work, I have to call long distance to coworkers on a regular basis... but I can never remember those handful of numbers... But, they are in my Address Book, so I can call up their name in Quicksilver, hit over to their phone number, hit enter, and their number is displayed in huge characters. Great for dialing. - stalefries, on 11/07/2007, -1/+7Not only that, so much of what Quicksilver can do is because it's so easy to hook into applications on the Mac and tell them what to do.
- mecki78, on 11/07/2007, -1/+7Finally :D I had a serious issue with Quicksilver a while ago and I kept bothering Alcor to show me a piece of code that does the directory scanning (only that piece, not the whole thing). I rewrote his simple example, showing him, how the same thing can be done in the same time, but without even 5% of the memory needed. I don't think he ever took anything of my code, but I think he copied the basic concept behind it and the next update of Quicksilver took significantly less memory and I was happy :)
For me this means, I can finally look into writing real good plugins for it. Admit it, the whole docu is wasteland. A lot of things are not explained at all and you have to play hours and hours to find out certain things. I had already so many powerful ideas, but noway to implement them. And I know a couple of bugs that keep annoying me for as long as I can think back and it's time to get these fixed ASAP... and now I can fix them myself if I have to :P - kseymore, on 11/07/2007, -0/+5It is software that looks like a little pop-up search engine but allows you to do things that take many steps really quickly. For instance instead of opening one's email program, creating a new message, adding the person's address, attaching the file, etc. You can type something as simple as "project.tiff email to johndoe@gmail.com"
- MagicianFB, on 11/08/2007, -0/+5No, its so much more than an application launcher.
I used to use launchy before I switched to mac, and since spotlight was hotkeyed something like launchy wasn't really needed. But I still use quicksilver. - inactive, on 11/07/2007, -0/+5QS + Growl == True Enlightenment;
- hockeyrox20120, on 11/07/2007, -4/+9i was thinking about the clothing company quicksilver.. my bad
- yetAnotherCroc, on 11/07/2007, -0/+5No dragging and dropping several files on the printer? I thought you already had that on Mac. But I can see how that would be usefull if the files are in separate folders.
- course6, on 11/07/2007, -0/+5Quick silver is kinda like a graphical version of the Unix/Linux command line. Bring it up with a quick keystroke, execute a command or two, and go back to your work. I use it mostly for moving files around quickly, without having to use my mouse and navigate trees of nested folders. I've also tied my iTunes commands to keystrokes using QS (so i never have to navigate out of the program I'm using to change the song).
- directive0, on 11/07/2007, -0/+5This is great news! Like everyone above me has already said Quicksilver is probably the most functional application on my computer. I would love to see it become more accessible to developers and tweakers. I really hate abusing comments, but I feel I really have to say "Thank you" to Alcor and anyone else even minutely involved in QS, it really has changed the way I use my computer and saved me countless hours of productivity. Keep up the great work!
- dvdrtrgn, on 11/07/2007, -0/+4This is really good news!
- inactive, on 11/07/2007, -0/+4UAC, turn it off.
Good day. - surfing, on 11/07/2007, -1/+5We are working on porting this to run on your Dr Pepper can right now
- nkm82, on 11/07/2007, -0/+4Resize / reformat a lot of images...
- mrsteveman1, on 11/07/2007, -0/+4The problem is that in a lot of cases, the developers would LIKE to release the source, but they want to retain control over the project. So the only options are to either use an odd license (people will complain) or GPL it and lose real control over the project (unless no one cares about forks).
What usually happens is the program remains closed but freeware, and a lot of people seem to be happy to accept that situation if the software is good. - kignjr3, on 11/07/2007, -0/+4Skip TUAW...
http://code.google.com/p/blacktree-alchemy/ - FunkyWitDaSysTm, on 11/07/2007, -3/+7yeah, but seeing as though leopard's spotlight is a super app launcher (while also doing many other things that i used to use quicksilver for), i personally find the other small functionality it provides for me to not be a big enough pay-off for using it.
i dunno... anyone know some good resources for learning more functionality for it for myself? maybe if it did more for me...
glad it's going open-source, though - SirG3, on 11/07/2007, -0/+4It doesn't look it, from first glance.
- redtortilla, on 11/07/2007, -0/+4Because it's very hard to describe. I'll try by showing you some examples of my daily use. I cut and paste a lot, so there's a module to remember your clipboard history. I have it set-up where I can invoke it by pressing ctrl+command+L and it will bring up a list of last 15 items I've copied. I can arrow down to the item I want and I can paste it, copy it to clipboard, or open URL (if it's a url). I know there are separate apps to do this, but I like this method best.
Tutorial:
http://theappleblog.com/2006/10/24/quicksilver-scr ...
You can create custom triggers. I've setup one trigger for all the programs I need for work, for me it's ctrl+option+command and it'll open 4 programs that I've setup. Anything you can do with Quicksilver, you can setup as a trigger action.
You can move files, copy files, navigate to different folders just by invoking QS (Quicksilver). You can set quick timed reminders that'll display on your screen. You can open your delicious bookmarks.
Because the QS is so limitless, the learning curve is steep. But what helped was trying to use basic QS as much as possible. At first you might be slower, but as you use it daily you get much better. Also search Google and look for tutorials you can incorporate into your work flows. Some are useful, some you'll never use, but it's a good way to see the possibilities.
I think QS is not for everyone, but if you're a keyboard-centric user, you'll probably like it more than someone who is more mouse-centric. -
