- KotZer, on 01/11/2009, -3/+121Hey you Mac-expert author , it's not Ctrl, it's Cmd
- judicar, on 01/11/2009, -17/+132Wait! I thought Macs never had problems and "Just Work".
There, I said it so the next 100 PC trolls don't have to. - TritonX, on 01/11/2009, -4/+72These are not problems?!?
It's a list of howto for newbs. - IamNomad, on 01/11/2009, -6/+40dugg for flip4mac...good solution to a bad proprietary product.
- Beatmiser, on 01/11/2009, -6/+38Ah it's nice to see the PC Fanboys who have probably a) Never used a Mac, b) Have a preconceived notion of what a Mac is and does based on ten year old stereotypes c) Don't get the fact that OSX is actually a very intuitive and powerful OS - are out in force today.
- HookmasterCH47, on 01/11/2009, -4/+31I didn't know that resetting the admin password was so easy, finally I can get into my roomie's porn collection.
- JosephShell, on 01/11/2009, -2/+24How can any Mac user not know all these already...
- choopie911, on 01/11/2009, -0/+20Then you have to buy the 30 book set on how to fix window's problems.
- Beatmiser, on 01/11/2009, -3/+21Call me a Mac Fanboy all you like. I'm a Window's SA who manages a...windows network. I happen to like Macs at home. And see right there is the problem. Idiots like you- who don't understand that there are pluses and minuses to every OS and that defining people by their OS is plain retarded.
So, really thanks for proving my point. - DelMonte, on 01/11/2009, -0/+18Actually, it's cmd-option-esc... But your mistake is forgivable, alt and option are the same key on a Mac, while command and control are indeed two different keys, and it's pretty stupid that the author used ctrl in his article.
- misterparry, on 01/11/2009, -1/+18dugg for Perian, the swiss army knife for quicktime
- falafelkiosken, on 01/11/2009, -2/+19yeah because it has got all nifty features OS X has got for years
- lothar250, on 01/11/2009, -2/+17ctrl-alt-esc? it's cmd-alt-esc.
- Chris_F, on 01/11/2009, -3/+18Most people who make Linux comments like this have never really used it outside of maybe a little live-cd experimentation.
- Louis11, on 01/11/2009, -4/+17This has to do with physical security and is not exactly software related. I don't care how secure a computer system is, if you give a guy access to it with a bootable CD i'm sure some bad ***** can go down . . .
Though I understand you where trying to be sarcastic, that was a pathetic excuse for sarcasm. - Iglio, on 01/11/2009, -3/+16next to the giant slingshot supposed to hurtle objects into space
- chkdg8, on 01/11/2009, -0/+13I mean, that was something you'd expect from PCWorld.
- choopie911, on 01/11/2009, -4/+17You're retarded...
- supermanred, on 01/12/2009, -1/+13Appzapper to totally rid yourself of all the data files (if you will never ever ever use the app again)
Otherwise, just drag the app into the trash or delete it from your apps folder.
No faulty registry here, boys. - Drexus, on 01/12/2009, -2/+14You forget... the author of the article is a newb, so it's all very exciting to him.
- falafelkiosken, on 01/11/2009, -1/+13drag to the trash, man. or use apps like AppCleaner if you want to delete all files associated with the app (preferences etc)
- LowHz, on 01/12/2009, -6/+17This Macbook I'm typing on is 2 years old. Only once have I had to do the Repair Permissions trick and occasionally I have to force an application to quit. These are normal maintenance things that can happen to any computer.
My XP laptop is a different story. I don't know how many times I've had to ***** around with the control panel, the network panel, the registry and the device manager to get the ***** to work. Not so with this Mac.
So before you PC users sit there and throw a 10 year old ad campaign back in my face I'll tell you that my ***** does just work. And that's the way I like it. - superhope, on 01/11/2009, -4/+15Sounds like you have experience with this being a douche thing.
- Goya, on 01/11/2009, -2/+13And out of those 10 'common' problems ive only ever had 1 on both my old G4 and my Mac Pro.
Like anyone cares. - Radan, on 01/12/2009, -0/+10Command will always be known as "The apple button" for me. That or "The kringle dingle".
- falafelkiosken, on 01/11/2009, -6/+16because there has never been such thing as problems with pcs
- Braxo, on 01/11/2009, -0/+9I would imagine most every web server is run off linux or unix. At least mine are.
So, you're retarded... - MrSkills, on 01/11/2009, -0/+9And by about 30 other people.
- KibibyteBrain, on 01/12/2009, -4/+13Yep. Just like Quicktime Alternative is similarly a great replacement for a bad proprietary product on Windows.
- DMXell, on 01/12/2009, -0/+8Buried for continuously saying stuff like "ctrl+i" instead of "cmd+i". In OS X our main modifier key is the command key, not the control key.
- supermanred, on 01/12/2009, -1/+9Problem solved? Are you ***** nuts? Problems started!
- Radan, on 01/12/2009, -3/+10Neither is there an "alt"-button on the Mac. The button that has the text "alt" written on it is called "option". How come no one gets this simple concept?!
- temsi, on 01/12/2009, -1/+8The only secure computer is a dead computer with a physically destroyed hard drive.
- cadmiumpaint, on 01/11/2009, -1/+8totally. I always hated having that lame win media player on my machine.
- bjorna, on 01/11/2009, -2/+9Buried as using ctrl instead of cmd!
- fugazied, on 01/12/2009, -0/+7And many of the 'problems' are things I have never seen happen on a mac. For example my macbook pro always detects the 2nd monitor and configures it immediately. Requiring a fix for that just seems like a waste of breath.
- supermanred, on 01/12/2009, -3/+10It crashed on me a few times already. Try actually using software and hardware (USB stuff) with it.
Seriously, who cares it's Vista with a bunch of crap taken out and other crap put in. Nothing has changed, still full of security holes, the stupid registry that gets ***** up all the time and such. - Gizmort, on 01/12/2009, -1/+8Can someone explain why it's better to give money to Ballmer?
- bbardlbradd, on 01/12/2009, -1/+8Yeah, and then some of these 'common' problems aren't really problems with the mac itself, they are problems with the users. Forgetting your password, Packing your boot drive, finding lost files, having something that'll play windows media... I've only had one problem mentioned here with any of my macs and it was #3. Trying to use an application to open a file that maybe it wasn't supposed to, but definitely could if I could force it too...
- Ubermann, on 01/12/2009, -4/+1111 (a) - See list of 10,283 quick fixes of PC problems.
- AvidPreatorian, on 01/12/2009, -1/+7hehe it's slowly catching up to Leopard. how revolutionary. rejoice.
- AmyVernon, on 01/11/2009, -6/+12No. 7 is worth the price of admission. Thanks.
- CptnEvilStomper, on 01/12/2009, -0/+61, 3, 6, 8. It's Command and Option, not Control and Alt.
2. Unless you actually highlight your Applications folder, open the Get Info window, and manually change the permissions for your user to read-only, it's very hard to do this. I guess anything is possible, but Repair Permissions is more useful when specific apps are giving you trouble.
4. Or just use Disk Inventory X, WhatSize, or OmniDiskSweeper. That way you can find out which specific folders and files are eating up the most space. And you can install the iStat Pro widget and check how much space is left on your hard drive.
5. You can also hold down Option while restarting and it'll bring up a list of all hard drives, CDs/DVDs, etc. Then just eject the disc. Also, how the hell does this guy know about the "drutil tray open" trick but keeps getting the Command and Control keys confused?
9. Just turning Airport off, then back on generally fixes any problems for me. I don't know why they went straight to the more complicated solutions when there's an easy one that usually works.
7 and 10 they actually got right, though I have a hard time believing that forgetting your password is a common problem. I'm amazed this actually made it to the front page given how much of it seems to have been pulled out of the author's ass. - kreatre2007, on 01/12/2009, -1/+7There are some errors here. It's not Control+I for get info. It's Command+I. Using Control+I will get you a nothing. Also, this article completely leaves out that Macs do right click. Apple has shipped a right clicking mouse since late 2005. You just need to turn on the preference for it in the Mouse & Keyboard preferences. It's odd that Apple doesn't have it turned on by default. It's one of the first things that I set while I'm setting up a new Mac for someone. A lot of these tips can be learned if you simply take some time to look around and become familiar with everything. Like any computer, a Mac may need some extra software installed from time to time. Flip4Mac and Perian are great tools to have installed. They allow Quicktime to play Windows Media files as well as AVI files and some other video codecs. Also, make sure to visit Adobe's website to get the latest versions of Flash and Shockwave. Those don't update automatically. Adobe reader is not needed since the Mac already has PDF technology built in. Adobe's postscript technology is built into Mac OS X which it inherited from NeXTSTEP/OpenSTEP when Apple bought NeXT from Steve Jobs. This is one reason why graphics and fonts look so much better in Mac OS X.
- wastern, on 01/12/2009, -1/+7OS X doesn't have hardware support? Maybe not on your hackintosh as they have no reason to support it, but find me one Mac user with Apple hardware that has ever had to find or update a driver. Of all the arguments that was the worst one to pick
I love editing config files in Ubuntu to get my monitor to display the correct resolution. fun. fun. - wastern, on 01/12/2009, -0/+6Most of these aren't problems, its "here is an issue you'd have on any OS" then "here is how to simply solve that problem using the Mac"
It sounds more like using a mac 101 then fixing problems - chops76, on 01/12/2009, -1/+7I suppose you're going to tell me that the Return key becomes the Enter key when using Shift with it, too...
- robzthird, on 01/12/2009, -1/+7I fail to see how that is relevant.
- choopie911, on 01/11/2009, -0/+6The only one I wasn't aware of is the Terminal way to eject disks. Other than that, good tips, but I think most users already know them.
- wastern, on 01/12/2009, -0/+6you can encrypt your entire home directory or make encrypted disk images, which I opt for
