- sarchosis, on 09/22/2008, -3/+45You can always trust the anti-virus people; it's not like they aren't trying to sell you their software.
- Belin, on 09/22/2008, -3/+36I'm glad that VLC opens most QT media without a problem.

I've been able to avoid a QT install on my Win box, which is a relief, since QT is total garbage. - SubjectiveC, on 09/22/2008, -5/+38Quicktime IS a bug. At least on Windows, it's always been.
- Sfenton, on 09/22/2008, -5/+24I'm a PC and I use VLC.
- colincornaby, on 09/22/2008, -3/+22Oh QuickTime. Why must your early nineties code be so awful?
- skeletorcares, on 09/22/2008, -18/+36It's only a matter of time until mac users are considered a sustainable target. Hope you like it while it lasted.
- fuckingusername, on 09/22/2008, -4/+20Quicktime just sucks, right next to Real Media
- silveravnt, on 09/22/2008, -3/+16@cawpin
Nobody has time to make fun of every MS vulnerability. - freezerburn666, on 09/22/2008, -5/+16***** quicktime. piece of trash software. no i don't want you running in my system tray, no i don't want a ***** new safari browser and i definitely do not want itunes on my computer. ***** you quicktime. i have vlc and thats all i need.
- jer21, on 09/22/2008, -0/+11I sell fiiiish!
- Altotus, on 09/22/2008, -1/+10While its fun to bash Quicktime, you'll find that you can do the same thing with a properly constructed AVI file and Windows Media Player. I would also be surprised if it (or something similar) affect VLC too.
FWIW - I think Quicktime as media format is excellent, perhaps one of the best there is. Quicktime Player, on the other hand, is nothing special. Once you get beyond the basic playback functionality, it's very clunky. However, there isn't a whole lot better. VLC is a wonderful QT player, assuming that the QT file only has video content in it - not so good if it's got lots of sprites and whatnot. - BlueTunicLink, on 09/22/2008, -1/+10and I have a beard
- AndrewDB, on 09/22/2008, -1/+9Why haven't you done this before ?
- Sonan, on 09/22/2008, -7/+15Quicktime has its place...
...in the recycle bin! But somehow it keeps climbing its way back out... - xcpleprechaun, on 09/22/2008, -10/+18Does anyone else believe that the Anti-virus software companies are the ones responsible for the creation of viruses? Think about it, it's a way to sustain your own company: "OUR AV software can block this virus, but no one else's can!" Why? We made it, so we know how to fix it.
Just food for thought. - silveravnt, on 09/22/2008, -1/+8QT does suck but come on. Nothing can touch realplayer for suckiness.
- XxtraLarGe, on 09/22/2008, -5/+12Heap overflow is a relatively easy fix, they just need to change the string handling. No big story here.
- leerayIG88, on 09/22/2008, -1/+8I guess it's time to replace quicktime with VLC in our lobbies..
- cawpin, on 09/22/2008, -6/+13"This is just a case of crappy programming by Apple."
And it were MS you'd be all over it like stink on *****. - oneoverzero, on 09/22/2008, -0/+7On a mac, QT+Perian = awesome.
I still prefer VLC though. - inactive, on 09/22/2008, -0/+6Bring it on!
- oneoverzero, on 09/22/2008, -0/+6That sounds like a bad business model.
"Oh, I downloaded a antivirus and now my computer runs like *****, I think I'll buy this program and possibly recommend it to my friends."
If anything, it helps their competitors. - kbro, on 09/22/2008, -0/+6Yes, I have really really liked it.
As to whether it is over or not, I doubt it. - natenovs, on 09/22/2008, -0/+6um. ok. ::rolls eyes::
- santaliqueur, on 09/22/2008, -7/+12Yeah I'm really worried about one bug that will be fixed by next week.
You make it sound like virus writers are making progress writing vulnerabilities. This is just a case of crappy programming by Apple. Nice try though. - tnoy, on 09/22/2008, -1/+6The MS_Blaster worm that infected something like a few hundred thousand machines exploited a hole in Windows around a month after the patch was released.
A patch is worthless unless people apply the patch.
Virtually all of the major worms/viruses that hit Microsoft products were after it was patched. Blaster, Sasser, Nimda, Code Red, etc, are all examples of this. - jwdav, on 09/23/2008, -0/+5Well at least Apple makes a version of QuickTime for Windows users - Microsoft doesn't make anything to play wmv stuff anywhere but Windows.
You want to see crap performance, check out wmv files via flip4mac on OS X. - jasmus, on 09/22/2008, -1/+6Not sure why you're being dugg down. I had an irrational hate for quicktime, and fully intended on using vlc all the time on my new macbook. Until I actually used it. It's quite good on OSX. I still won't use it on Windows, it sucks hard there.
When you're being dugg down for making a good point, and someone else is being dugg up for "Maybe because there's pretty much nothing else on OS X?", I don't hold much hope for an intelligent conversation on this issue. - Tartooob, on 09/22/2008, -1/+5Get quicktime alternative :)
http://www.free-codecs.com/download/quicktime_alte ... - jasmus, on 09/22/2008, -1/+5here's a tip, don't install itunes, quicktime or safari and they won't bother you. That one's free, you can have it ;)
- Appleologist, on 09/22/2008, -0/+4Maybe it's just me, but VLC isn't always as reliable as QuickTime. However, VLC is a savior on occasion.
- jasmus, on 09/22/2008, -0/+4Not so much "easypickens" that I've yet to see an actual virus / malware (that didn't require your intervention to install) in the wild.
- coolesttech, on 09/22/2008, -3/+7I'm a PC and I use Zune. :P
- inactive, on 09/22/2008, -0/+4"Risk: Low"
And a way to exploit the bug hasn't even been found yet.
Sensationalism. - MScrip, on 09/22/2008, -2/+6So you don't want iTunes or Quicktime or Safari on your computer... then why are you complaining?
You've got VLC... you're done. Update your hosts file to redirect apple.com to 127.0.0.1 - douglasr007, on 09/22/2008, -2/+5no, Firefox doesn't like QuickTime
- miked123, on 09/22/2008, -5/+8Why is it the Quicktime bugs that always get attention? Besides, there's only been like 8 of them in the past year. Run for the hills!
- aadsfasdf, on 09/22/2008, -0/+3Why is "a" the only word not capitalized in the title?
- leerayIG88, on 09/22/2008, -1/+4because i didn't know about VLC.
- AndrewDB, on 09/22/2008, -1/+4That's a good, honest reason. :)
- CobaltBlue, on 09/22/2008, -2/+5I remember when realplayer was awesome. I think it was the first week that it came out. then they started adding tons of worthless crap to it.
- MacParrot, on 09/22/2008, -1/+4Soooo...when going to a page that requires QuickTime which you refuse to install as is your right, you're getting pissed that FireFox can't handle it and freezes?
Just go find other sources that don't use QuickTime or do without. - silveravnt, on 09/22/2008, -1/+4And will be fixed before the weekend, yawn.
- FredFredrickson, on 09/22/2008, -2/+4I totally agree. I don't mind iTunes that much, but I hate that it depends on QuickTime to run - I look fondly back on the days when I was able to go months, or sometimes years, without having to install QuickTime.
It's a shame a lot of movie houses release trailers in only QuickTime format, because most of the time, I won't download QT videos unless I absolutely have to. - zoydberg, on 09/22/2008, -1/+3wow. someone can attack through a bug. who knew
- sgtawol, on 09/22/2008, -3/+5Don't you mean iTrust?
If priests touching little boys can't shake a catholic's belief good luck knocking sense into an Apple fanboi with anything but a 2x4 upside their head. - tomakun, on 09/22/2008, -1/+3Could we just take the cross product of the vector with another bug so it would go off in a different direction? Oh wait...
- chanop, on 09/22/2008, -0/+2I'm going to diggboards.com to spam digg.com
- steven0451, on 09/22/2008, -8/+10I agree with you on that, and I'm no Apple fanboy...but I have to say that QT on OS X is pretty good in comparison.
- Butter66, on 09/22/2008, -5/+7How about they fix the bug THEN announce it to everyone
