- Hollister, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Why is this even important, how long does a video ipod battery last playing video?
- mayaalouis, on 04/27/2009, -0/+1Make sure the video is MP4 or H2.64 video for iPod.
You can try Cucusoft iPod Video Converter Suite to rip DVD movie and convert videos in any format to iPod. It is the fastest converter I have used. Also, the output quality is great. You can download this software free from here:

Step by step guide about converting DVD, Videos, Flash and Youtube videos to iPod:
http://dvdtoipod.us/dvdvideoguide/how-to-convert-a ... - McZiggz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1*****
FYI the video iPod can output much higher than the standard 320x240 res that it diplays.
These are the recomended resolutions (all of which i'm using and work fine). The iPod configures them to look normal on the iPod's screen, but for TV output they produce a much higher quality video (near dvd quality on a SDTV).
720 x 304 - 2.35:1
624 x 336 - 1.85:1
624 x 352 - 16:9
512 x 384 - 4:3
Depending upon your resolution, frames per second (don't go above 30), kbps, and quality of audio your typical movie will be roughly 500mb - 1GB. Handbrake will also let you set your target size.
Also note: The higher resolution videos make your iPod work harder, thus decreasing your battery life. You will be able to watch a full movie in the highest widescreen format... but thats about it. But if you have it plugged into your TV... plug it into a power source also & problem solved.
***** - aaumiller, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I like that it's step-by-step.
- moisie, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Or you could use mactheripper and handbrake (lite) or even just handbrake but your dvd drive would be busy for a long time.
- lordsandwich, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"DO YOU ENJOY WATCHING A MOVIE ON A SCREEN THAT TINY?"
I enjoy it more than doing actual work in my cubicle. :D - BionicAntboy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1A decent starter.
If one encodes with the older MP4 (SP for the PSP) and MP3 for the audio, the resultant files will play on iPod, PSP, desktops, Palm and PPC devices with the free TCPMP player and even XBMC video player for modded Xboxen (though the 320x240 res is weak for home theatre enjoyment).
Otherwise, MP4 SP with MP3 audio is pretty much a standard that works with everything. I wish some of the vidcasters out there would clue into this. - Stark, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1pretty weak story
dvd decrypter/videora works great for XP
handbrake is the best (but you need a mac) - lordsandwich, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"The bad thing is all of the conversion software records in real time, so it's not like ripping CDs. If the movie is two hours, it will take two hours(or more) to convert."
I use Nero on an Athlon XP and I can encode at 50+fps. Granted, I'm running this at single-pass and low-profile MPEG-4, but you really can't tell the difference on a tiny screen. - CalgaryTechGuy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0New title for USA, "How to break the DMCA in three easy steps."
- kajoob, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Handbrake Lite is awesome, so is iSquint. Just put in the dvd and it does everything for you.
- nugge7, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0CloneDVD Mobile WORKS FOR ME! :-)
- habs20, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Copying your DVD for your own use is not a crime. The best app I have found for copying DVD to my ipod is DVDClone Mobile. Very Very easy to use
- DalekoProvidek, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0same stuff that was in an article in the printed Wired magazine. wooo. cutting edge and oh-so-timely.
- tyrellinc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Converting DVDs to Video iPod is fairly painless at this point, but the bigger question is DO YOU ENJOY WATCHING A MOVIE ON A SCREEN THAT TINY? After watching 30 minutes of a movie I converted, I turned it off and took it back to the Apple store. Sure the screen looks great, but give it 30 minutes - I'll bet you'll feel the same way. Until someone comes out with an accessory that enhances the screen size I'm out. And I don't mean that silly product eMagin came out with - (who enjoys watching a movie with one eye?!)
- CanuckMakem, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0iSquint is the one I use... great prog
- fishnchips, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Handbrake all the way!
- gamabunta, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1or you could use the digg search feature to find that similar articles have been posted dozens of times.
- BluParadox, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Am I the only one who has huge audio sync problems with Videora and 3GP Converter with videos over about 30 minutes long? Does anyone know a way around this?
- McZiggz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Sorry that bit about the battery life was confusing. If you are watching your higher res video on the iPod's screen the video processor needs to work harder to convert the high res movie to a lower resolution for the screen. This will decrease the battery life.
As far as i can tell, output is output and the battery life doesn't change based on what resolution you are using. The movie doesn't display on the iPod whilte it is plugged into a TV and the backlight turns off, so the battery life is pretty decent. - GGERG15, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0there are so many ways of doing this, but nice starter utility nonetheless
- vatchea, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0handbrake all the way!
- ItsGus, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1lol that article includes a completely unnessecary step (merging VOB files)
just choose the preference to NOT SPLIT THEM IN THE FIRST PLACE
crappy article... :( - popltree2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0You could also use CloneDVD Mobile with AnyDVD. Been using it for about 2 weeks now and it works great!
- bdgraaron, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1This is good to know... now I just need a Video iPod.
- sujeet, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Notch up another for DVD Decrypter + Videora. However, Videora's been known to have some AV sync trouble every once in a while.
What does one do with a screen that small? Buy the iPod AV cable and use a regular TV instead, if you really must watch it on a bigger screen. The "TV On" mode helps save battery power, too (by not actually playing the movie on the iPod). - qwerty967, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Put me down as another vote for DVD Decrypter + Videora converter.
- fishcymbal, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0It's all about the DMCA, and if you're bothered by it, do something about it. It ticks me off, as it does all of us who understand time-shifting (recording for later use), place-shifting (same, plus format changes), and fair use. EFF.org is all over it. Check this link and put your rants to good use: http://tinyurl.com/ht5ve Don't just get mad, do something about it.
- purplfunk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Ive been doin this since October.
- Chompy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0If anything is illegal it's the copy protection that prevents me from easily making a backup copy in the first place.
- skunkman62, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0DVD Shrink + Videora = Crazy Delicious
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I must say, that this article is extremely basic, and to those arguing those who are non-geeky don't know how to do this; how many read digg?
- ehand, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I had audio sync problems with Videora and 3GP. I used Jodix free iPod Video converter with better results.

If that's not reason enough to stop your whining, then keep this in mind: even if the article sucks, some of the suggestions here are darn good ones. Article has been dug, but more than the - thyratron, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Some of these articles have less info than the user comments here contain. I'll try to inform this time...
Handbrake [free - Mac - Universal Binary] rips from DVD, to recompress for the iPod or for hard-drive based viewing, allows pretty easy control of settings. Not for making backup DVDs.
Supported sources:
Any DVD-like source: VIDEO_TS folder, DVD image or real DVD (even encrypted)
PAL or NTSC
AC-3, LPCM or MPEG audio tracks
Outputs:
File format: MP4, AVI or OGM
Video: MPEG-4 or H.264 (1 or 2 passes or constant quantizer encoding)
Audio: AAC, MP3, Vorbis or AC-3 pass-through (supports encoding of several audio tracks
iSquint [free - Mac - Universal Binary] converts nearly any video file (except wmv3) for the iPod. This provides Fast MPEG-4 and H.264 conversion for the iPod from almost every popular video format except DVD, from 3GP to XviD. (WMV3 not supported but who uses that?) Simplified compared to Handbrake, doesn't use DVD directly as source, extremely simple with default output file for direct iPod viewing, or higher quality iPod for TV viewing modes. Both can be played on your computer too, but for that purpose most people would want higher quality (bigger image area) and would probably use ffmpeg-X for transcoding. Not for making backup DVDs. Does offer access to detailed settings too, but doesn't attempt to make them simple (stick with defaults)
To use this with a DVD as source you'd have to rip the data from DVD with MacTheRipper first (be prepared for a large file from that)
Different software is used for making backups of DVDs. Typically the data is ripped from DVD with MacTheRipper (free - Mac - PPC). Unless you have a dual-layer burner (cheap) and dual-layer media (expensive), the resulting files are often too big to fit on cheap single-layer DVDs (about 4.3 gig max). DVD2OneX (commercial Mac PPC & Windows) can recompress the data to bring the file size down. Burning is free with Apple's Disk Utility which works when DVD2OneX is set to produce a disc image file. Toast 7 (commercial - Mac PPC) is very popular for burning many types of discs, and works from properly prepared video files as well as disc image files. Roxio Popcorn (commercial - Mac PPC ?) offers recompression and burning in one app.
