- epadafunk, on 03/21/2008, -1/+55He should have posted the MacBook Pro, I bet more people would download that.
- inactive, on 03/21/2008, -3/+40One more legal torrent to throw in the faces of Comcast and everyone else who says that torrents are just for piracy.
- DaviDTC, on 03/21/2008, -3/+28Nice, cant wait until the get the MacBook Air on there.
- stillasleep00, on 03/21/2008, -3/+20Alright, anyone else read the title and wonder how they were able to publish laptops over bittorrent?
- DotNetWill, on 03/21/2008, -3/+17The end is nigh for traditional media
- xM55, on 10/02/2009, -1/+14Uhh... title = confusing much?
- Mrdudeperson, on 03/21/2008, -0/+12Comcast, if you screw this up I'm gonna.......
- martelo, on 03/21/2008, -0/+11Awesome! I checked out "The Cult of Mac" from my local library a few weeks ago and it's a fun read, if a little bit dated. Good on the publisher and author for embracing new media like this.
- bonarez, on 03/21/2008, -1/+11Yeah, using bittorrent to publish is becoming a real 'Trent'
- inactive, on 03/21/2008, -0/+10Bah, i downloaded a Mac pro dual xeon 2 weeks ago from newsgroups.
- roblawton, on 03/21/2008, -1/+8I'll seed...!
- davidwasman, on 03/21/2008, -0/+6I was once featured on Cult Of Mac and Leander was great even years ago when it came to 'Pirating'. His story on my work converting PC's to Macs was fair, factual, and well researched.
I am definitely going to grab these both to show my support for him AND this action. - rogeriogal, on 03/21/2008, -2/+7I'm sorry, you are misinformed. Universities and knowledge institutions use BT to exchange research notes and materials. The fact that you do not read any of these texts does not make them dissapear.
- Kratos76, on 03/21/2008, -1/+6not to be confused with macbooks.
- xptweakerntn, on 03/21/2008, -1/+6A publisher? Purposely putting files up on bittorrent? A strange day indeed...
- krnldmp, on 03/21/2008, -4/+8Why would you want that even for free?
- hotdamn, on 03/21/2008, -0/+4I see what you did there.
Clever boy. - centerblack, on 03/21/2008, -0/+4There's no guarantee that just because you put a book, movie or piece of music up on a tracker, people will look at it.
Advertising and editing still need to be done. Authors will need to either do these things themselves or pay someone to do it. So yea, the distribution problem has been solved, but what about everything else? (And, you still gotta get paid).
P2P and bit torrent is a great distribution method, it's just not a complete system and I don't know why people want to claim it is one. - inactive, on 03/21/2008, -0/+3I know that torrents are used to download copyright protected material. That isn't ALL it is used for. If the major recording labels and the movie industry succeed in stifling this technology we all lose. Did you own a VCR? How about a CD burner? According to the **IAA all those devices are good for is pirating movies and music. I don't give a crap how much denial there is from anyone, torrents have legitimate uses and bandwidth that is sold to customers should be private and not intercepted or interfered with. It's like that pesky first amendment to the constitution. Lots of people say things I don't agree with, but when I forcibly shut them up then I am wrong, even if they are spouting idiotic nonsense.
- dlinkwit27, on 03/21/2008, -0/+3Even the government uses torrents. They use it to distribute new versions of America's Army.
- DarkDx, on 03/21/2008, -1/+4What about thge zillions of WoW installations/updates?
- nealyng, on 03/21/2008, -0/+2Awesome. I was going to buy Cult of Mac at Borders a few weeks ago but the actual book wasn't in very good condition, and it was really expensive. This is much better.
- Rageous, on 03/21/2008, -1/+3Not to piss on noble intentions guys, but the only way Leander Kahney is able to get people to read his work is by giving it away for free.
http://daringfireball.net/2008/03/kahney_jackass
Even to this day, his reporting is dubious at best. - xptweakerntn, on 03/21/2008, -2/+4Alright...while I just downloaded this...and although it is very cool, it is basically just an ad for Mac's and iPod's.
- JudgeMonkey, on 03/21/2008, -0/+2Same thing I thought when I read it. Only thing that made any sense was it was the image of their hard drive, to which I though... "Why?"
- JudgeMonkey, on 03/21/2008, -1/+3Hey..... die.
- inactive, on 03/21/2008, -0/+2MacBook Pros come in larger sizes, and would clog the tubes too fast.
- andycr512, on 03/21/2008, -0/+2"Things look bad for publishers. Does away with that whole business of distributing books."
I like books. I like stuffing a book in my pocket so I can read it when I'm not home or with my laptop. I like the smell of a new book when I open it. I like comparing the two sides of an open book to see how far I am into it. I like finishing a book and being able to physically close the cover.
Books aren't going anywhere. - dlinkwit27, on 03/21/2008, -0/+2I know I already commented, but I don't see how this is a valid argument. How many gun deaths are there a year in the US? Yes there are legit uses like hunting, but they are also used to commit crimes, but I've never seen an organization go as "anti"-gun as the RIAA and MPAA are anti-torrents.

- inactive, on 03/21/2008, -0/+2Plus zillions^2 linux distros, and a few podcasts.
- Gatesophile, on 03/21/2008, -0/+1The Cult of Mac is a great book, after I checked it out from my library I had to buy it.
- ECas123, on 03/21/2008, -2/+3Tenderly love them?
- EBFoxbat, on 03/21/2008, -1/+2Yarrrrrrrr me fellow readers.
- rdubya44, on 03/21/2008, -0/+1I love this new wave of creatives giving away their art. I hope it stems great things for the future of information sharing. After reading about 20 pages, I realized this book, although free, is a bit dated, covering old computers of yesteryear, as well as not written so well. Word choice is redundant, just a bit dry. But free.
Compare it to a CAM release. It's free, it sucks, but you get the point. - CaliforniaEagle, on 03/21/2008, -0/+1Man...Do I love my Mac Book Pro...It just works smoothly and conveniently everyday!
- centerblack, on 03/21/2008, -0/+1Eh, music is one thing, but who wants to read a book on PDF??? Who wants to print the thing out on their printer that uses $1000/barrel ink? Until the logistics of actually using this digital media improve, traditional media will stay where it is.
OLED displays may come in very handy for that type of application... we'll see. - d00d, on 03/23/2008, -0/+1Of course the more obvious explanation is that he wants to use this as a mechanism to promote his book coming out in April.
Nah, couldn't possibly be that. - groverblue, on 03/21/2008, -0/+1@LocalDocal
>Uh, there's quite a difference between a retail book being put on BT and a few people exchanging private files with each other.
Comcast doesn't discriminate between the two. - _skin_, on 03/21/2008, -1/+2Keep paying the devil for your tubes... See what happens.
- _skin_, on 03/21/2008, -0/+1Your spell check auto replaced trend for trent? I get it... OHHHHH!
- atdakore, on 03/21/2008, -0/+1Um has anyone noticed that he is the first commenter on both the torrents, asking people to stop seeding, as he will upload a higher quality one next week apparently. Maybe he was drunk?
- worthone, on 03/21/2008, -0/+1Read some history and you will understand that the appearance of a new medium doesn't mean the annihiliation of an old one, or at least the immediate disappearance of one.
- inactive, on 03/21/2008, -0/+1Yes, they should offer that as the dial-up friendly download.
- tomchow, on 03/25/2008, -0/+1Any other books can be downloaded like these ones?
- b4db0y, on 03/21/2008, -1/+1MacBooks

Digg me down for stating the obvious - inactive, on 03/21/2008, -5/+4my favorite apple is red ones

- inactive, on 03/21/2008, -6/+3Call me when they post something useful or relevant
- LocalDocal, on 03/21/2008, -4/+1Uh, there's quite a difference between a retail book being put on BT and a few people exchanging private files with each other.
Anyway, I have to agree with Fkr. This is hardly a 'trend' as, so far, there's only been a few cases of this (wasn't that BT file from the Southern music concert the biggest news so far?). Then again, I suppose I shouldn't put much stock into this considering the source of the news - Torrentfreak. -
