- irfanmp, on 08/12/2008, -3/+53Wow...I've seen Apple fanboys, but never a Psystar fanboy.
- Subcranium, on 08/12/2008, -3/+44Anyone actually have a Pystar Mac?
- rajputwarrior, on 08/12/2008, -4/+42the irony in that statement is unbelievable...
- inactive, on 08/12/2008, -5/+38I was gonna buy one but they are too expensive.
- phoomp, on 08/12/2008, -1/+32I've often wondered what Mac people would say if Microsoft declared Apple hardware to be unauthorized for Windows installations ...
- inactive, on 08/12/2008, -0/+21The 4 people who dug me down are humorless!
- Azohko, on 08/12/2008, -2/+21Are Red Headed step children more susceptible to slapping?
- freezerburn666, on 08/12/2008, -4/+21for me a big part of owning a PC is that i can do anything my self. that saves me from hauling my tower on the ***** city bus to the only mac store i know of.
also, since it works like a mac, your analogy is quite backwards. its more like putting a pontiac body kit on a ferrari. - irfanmp, on 08/12/2008, -1/+16Previously, if you wanted to reinstall Leopard, you had to ship it back to them. This allows you to pop in their "restore disc" and then use the original Leopard DVD they provided (you couldn't do that before).
- TheUngod, on 08/12/2008, -4/+17Uh, you have this totally backwards. This is more like a guy buying a fancy engine with a crappy exterior. They want the superior performance, but don't give a damn about a shiny logo. Of course, most people who buy a Mac do it in large part due to the shiny logo...mostly in line with a Ferrari owner.
- lnxfi, on 08/12/2008, -2/+14Why didn't they get one to begin with? I thought that was stardard, no?
Are these things any better or worse than a real mac? - andypop481, on 08/12/2008, -3/+14prepare to be buried furiously.
i salute you. - DirtyWorker, on 08/12/2008, -1/+9From which planet did you get this iMac? Mine is running at peak performance, with 4 GB RAM editing HD video is no problem, and the usual temperature is between 40 and 50. So looking at your comment, you don't own an iMac, and have read about such faults on a site like wehatemacbecauseitisexpensiveandwecantaffordit.com Grats.
- MacParrot, on 08/12/2008, -1/+9streak, let the lawyers figure it out. The only that makes it illegal is Apple's EULA and that's questionable at best. As far as the hardware goes, what Psystar is selling is actually a better system (measuring performance at least) at a cheaper price than what Apple sells. Even with the $155 charge to install Leopard. I however wouldn't buy one until they reduce the fan noise to something less that a 747 in reverse thrust however.
Also, I'd like to see how Apple could force all the people using Psystar's computers to return them - frostbyt, on 08/12/2008, -3/+11I have been building PCs for 10+ years. The Antec case is a bad ass one.

So smart. - MacParrot, on 08/12/2008, -2/+10I'm no fan of Psystar, but what they are doing isn't piracy. When you purchase a Psystar Open Computer, you can as an option have OS X 10.5 installed by Psystar. When they ship the computer to you, not only does it already have Leopard installed, but they include a legal retail copy from Apple of OS X.
While Apple's EULA prohibits installing it on a computer other than an Apple branded Mac (an issue for another day), Psystar isn't pirating the OS. The article was a little sparse on what the restore disk has on it, but I'm assuming it's the files required to make OSX86 operate on a vanilla PC. - inactive, on 08/12/2008, -0/+8wildsnake,
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tying_(commerce)
"Some kinds of tying, especially by contract, have historically been regarded as anti-competitive practices. The basic idea is that consumers are harmed by being forced to buy an undesired good (the tied good) in order to purchase a good they actually want (the tying good), and so would prefer that the goods be sold separately."
Let me break that down for you. The customer wants OSX, they are being forced to buy a Macintosh computer, even though there is nothing unique about Macintosh computers. Looks like an open and shut case to me. - fadeedaf, on 08/12/2008, -2/+9All it says is that the disc that is being sent to them will allow them to reinstall the OS off of the original Leopard disc that shipped with the computer. It obviously skirts the lines of legality but this particular item does not do that, it is just a boot disk.
- Br3ach, on 08/12/2008, -4/+11Psystar is interesting to me just in the way it reminds me of the IBM-compatible days before PCs were more or less standardized. They too are doing about the same thing.
I am sure Ill be digged down to hell for this, but come on. Apple is elegant but hideously expensive hardware, OS X has been proven to run fine on non-Mac hardware if you have the right setup. With some tweaks it could run on anything just as Windows does.
While Microsoft fumbles the football with Vista, why wouldn't Apple want to pick up the ball and release OS X for all? Fanboys can still have their hardware, Apple is one of the few companies out there that can work the hardware angle to their advantage. The OS is not all their fans are buying. - Firehed, on 08/12/2008, -0/+6Of course it's faster than a MBP - laptops have slower hard drives, and hard drives are the biggest bottleneck in modern systems. The Mini, incidentally, also has a slower laptop hard drive.
- testicle69, on 08/12/2008, -29/+35I have one, faster than my MacBook Pro and slaps my Mac Mini around like a red headed step child...GO PSYSTAR!
- xNarrowSoulx, on 08/12/2008, -1/+7I think the overall term to describe them in comparison to Macs is 'Cheaper'.
- inactive, on 08/12/2008, -0/+6Oh one more thing...
The type of protection you advocate is precisely the thing that is illegal. It is nice to know going into this case that there is unanimous agreement that Apple is indeed tying;) - TheUngod, on 08/12/2008, -0/+6Me fail english?
- ilgaz, on 08/12/2008, -0/+6Mac Mini is a laptop in a little PC case. Macbook "Pro" is a laptop too obviously. Your post doesn't make sense at all.
I don't believe you have macbook pro or mini or even a Pystar. - Wailord, on 08/12/2008, -1/+7Aren't you just a cute little bastard...
- lnxfi, on 08/12/2008, -1/+6I'll be the one to say it... but it just works! except for when it doesn't, but it's not a big deal. because... you know. shut up!
- Snakedal337, on 08/12/2008, -1/+6I'd assume if you were building windows based PCs, you could. All these other companies include restore discs (More recently Restore "Partitions")
- WELLDOITLIVE, on 08/12/2008, -1/+6Yes, they must all be slapped silly.
- Vindicoth, on 08/12/2008, -0/+5How the hell did you manage to misspell Psytar 4 times when the correct spelling is in your title bar?
- MacParrot, on 08/12/2008, -0/+5Um...you can easily put in 4GB of RAM into an iMac. Just don't buy it from Apple (or Dell/HP/Joe's PC and camel feed store). With either a 20 or 24-inch monitor they do just fine for video editing.
A Linux guy I know that loves to give me a hard time for being a Mac user recently got some funding for creating online repair and installation videos for various industrial-grade security systems and locking hardware. He ended up buying a 24-inch 3.06GHz iMac, Final Cut Studio, and CS3.Why did he go with a Mac? Because in his opinion it was the easiest, most elegant solution that had nothing to do with how it "looks". He intends to keep using Linux at home and in the office for everything else (except his work XP Pro partition for stuff that is required beyond that) because that's what he prefers.
I haven't heard about major problems with the latest model regarding heat or monitor issues. Maybe you could supply a link? - Gee1004, on 08/12/2008, -0/+5No, it's the fact that Apple designed the operating system and the hardware to run it. Sorry, not to be rude, but in America every person has a right to design something from their ideas and manufacture it with their set of rules, as long as it doesn't endanger people or stop people from living or advancing. A Computer is not considered a necessity for society like cars, food, gas, TV, telephones, voting, water. Most electronics are a luxury item like the playstation or xbox. There is no such thing as a Sony Playstation has to run XBOX game. If you can't afford a Mac, there are alternatives like linux or Windows. And believe me, if people started cloning playstations and selling them, Sony will be on their ass too
- Palaceguard, on 08/12/2008, -1/+6http://digg.com/settings/topics
- fafnir314, on 08/12/2008, -2/+6Not at all, and I say this as I write from my linux computer. Open source is a wonderful concept, but just being non-proprietary doesn't automatically make it a better product, especially for the 90% of computer users who don't like tinkering.
- freezerburn666, on 08/12/2008, -2/+6well i dont even know what an apple store is, there certainly is nothing in this city branded by the apple company. just this hideous purple building called something something computers and they sell and service macs. i doubt they would send out half their staff to do an onsite job
- Azohko, on 08/12/2008, -1/+5I Dunno, but I do hate being inside a McDonald's.
Coincidence?
Perhaps... - inactive, on 08/12/2008, -0/+4Apple faces a potentially much more serious lawsuit from Psystar.
http://news.cnet.com/8301-13579_3-10006371-37.html
Apple has an uphill battle on this one, because they are going to suffer under a lot of the rulings that affected Microsofts own anti-trust case. I imagine you will see quite a bit of push back preventing the court from overturning those rulings... - orangefly, on 08/12/2008, -0/+4hold your breath man....
- DirtyWorker, on 08/12/2008, -0/+4Why would I do that with less then 4 GB RAM?
- MacParrot, on 08/12/2008, -0/+3Thanks for the link. This is dated from last November and was hardly a widespread problem. Apple should have taken care of any iMacs with this issue. Since I haven't seen any digg posts screaming that the whole line or even a substantial percentage had the issue, hopefully it's resolved.
- inactive, on 08/12/2008, -6/+9No, it's more like buying a souped-up Porsche that spanks the Ferrari for half the price
- atbnet, on 08/12/2008, -0/+3I have the P182 too. It's a beast of a case.
- Caulfield, on 08/12/2008, -0/+3There's no such thing as a Leopard upgrade DVD. Apple has never had OS upgrade software. When you upgrade to Leopard, you are buying a full license.
Look it up. - jkgm, on 08/12/2008, -1/+4Riiiight. Because everyone who doesn't have exactly the same knowledge as you is a loser. Try telling your surgeon he's an ignoramus because he doesn't maintain his own PC.
- mmzplanet, on 08/12/2008, -1/+4I read a bit more into it. It still uses the standard Leopard DVD. From the sound of it at first, it seemed to be a copy they were sending you. That is piracy, what they are doing isn't.
I still think Psystar needs to go. I don't mind people assembling their own Hackintosh, but to see these guys profit while contributing no talent whatsoever.... sucks. At least a Hackintosh owner has probably learned something about OS X, Unix, or computing in general. - Gee1004, on 08/12/2008, -8/+11My video card died on my MacPro last week. I called Applecare Thursday and received the new one Friday. Next day service
- Palaceguard, on 08/12/2008, -0/+3I prefer to waste it on parties, magazines, drugs, beer, movies. Which all adds up to 10x the cost of 1 Mac.
- khyberkitsune, on 08/12/2008, -2/+54GB is NOT the minimum for video editing. We didn't have 4GB of RAM back in the 80s, plenty of video editing happened then on computers. Hell, I have an old 400 MHz laptop with 256 megs of RAM, VirtualDub works just fine.
- Danikar, on 08/12/2008, -1/+4HP or Dell is the equivalent to Psystar. Psystar just does it for Macintosh. The only problem with what they do is that Apple doesn't want them to do it.
So, to say Psystar profits off no talent is to say Dell profits off no talent. Which might be the case, but regardless selling computers is a legit business.
This would be the same as if Microsoft said that Dell can't install Windows on their computers. They wouldn't have a leg to stand on, but for some reason Apple has gotten away with this kind of thing for years.
Hopefully, after a few antitrust lawsuits that won't be the case. - inactive, on 08/12/2008, -1/+4Hold on a second... For a while Microsoft was tying windows as well. Micrsoft claimed in their EULA that it was against the rules to run Vista in a virtual machine unless you purchased the Ultimate version. They eventually dropped that provision though.
