The comparable apple in-ear are about US$40 which is way the ***** more than all the models featured in that ***** article. From a price point they aren't exactly comparing apples to apples. Sometime you're in a mall and you walk by a sound & home theatre Showroom, walk up to the counter and ask to try a pair of high-end headphones for the sake of it -- most showrooms have sample pairs to test drive. You might actually become compelled to buy a pair and rediscover all of your music all over again. If you find no appreciable difference, then no harm done anywhere, at least you checked it out.
[Sometimes good sound quality won't cost an arm and a leg. Usually headphone form factor is a big deal for people -- but if you don't mind on-ear headphones, I suggest checking out the AKG K26P's. Got them at FYE on sale for $15 (I think they're normally around $20-$30). In ear, with changeable gel sleeves to fit your ears. They're practically noise cancelling, sound great.

What I don't get is how all over the place people will buy an iPod which in the Uk can easily cost £200+ or more than 400 USD and then use crappy included headphones with it. Who the hell ever spends that much money on a music player and then doesn't listen to it in such a way that they'll never do it justice? Well most people it seems judging from the amount of white in ear headphones I see people walking around with. I am a Technics man myself (though others prefer Bose or Sennheiser) and the headphones I have blow Apple out of the water. If you're going to spend that much money, don't be cheap - listen to music through decent headphones and assuming you haven't compressed it to ***** you can enjoy it as it was intended.
